Radio controlled cars make great gifts for kids and also adults. They are a good way to have fun and with a range of radio controlled nitro, petrol, electric models to choose from it can be overwhelming.

Do not worry read our guidelines below, for a brief comparison on the big 3.

There is a huge choice so firstly you’ll need to decide the power source -

1. Nitro cars are run on a special fuel mixture of oil, methanol, and nitromethane. This nitro fuel can be easily bought from model shops or online and is worth the little bit of extra effort.

The speed and power of nitro radio controlled cars is awesome and is second to none, there are many benefits to the nitro RC car and once its broken in they can reach speeds of 30 – 75 MPH and can race on tracks or join a hobby club in this exciting world of RC cars.

A single gallon of fuel will keep a nitro vehicle going for about 6 – 7 hours before needing to be refilled so you can keep going always with short cooling down periods in between, you can buy a 2.2 litre of nitro fuel for around £14 and will fill a nitro car about 30 times. But with electric powered models there are limits as once the batteries have run down, you’ll need to recharge before using again.

Most nitro rc cars are (RTR) ready to run out the box. All that is needed is a “glow start, fuel, batteries” and most importantly READ THE INSTRUCTIONS as it would be a shame to ruin your new radio controlled nitro car simply because you did not bother to read the manual.

There is more maintenance involved in a radio controlled nitro car and you would need to learn to clean, tune, maintain and upgrade it but this is very easy and will give you an understanding of how these models work.

Radio controlled cars use power from the battery and they can drain in no time so a wise choice to invest in some.

Electric radio controlled cars or trucks are ideal for someone who wants to run out the box and no maintenance required.

They are quieter than nitro or petrol models and generally very straight forward to use and little more than a wipe down is all that is needed.

PETROL RC BUGGYS

Petrol radio controlled cars used to be very expensive to buy and hard to find.

It was also considered a specialist hobby but a few years ago prices have dropped to realistic prices.

Petrol radio controlled cars go very fast and are along the ranks of nitro models in terms of power, performance and speed.

Petrol models run on a mix of unleaded petrol and 2 stroke oil which is easy to mix as there is normally a measure fuel bottle and shows you the correct level. Both these are easy available from any petrol forecourt

Petrol RC buggys are great for off road and awesome fun with the real engine sound and smell of fuel burning just adds to existing feel you’re gonna get from a petrol radio controlled buggy or car. A little aftercare is required and maintenance with a petrol model so your need to get to know a little knowledge on the basics.

Please note: ages of 14 + is recommended for use on petrol RC cars.

How do you know which nitro fuel is best for your RC boats nitro engine?

My suggestion is that you start out with the type of fuel recommended by your rc boat manufacturer. That probably matters for your warranty! You should also follow the recommended engine settings for your rc boat. In time, when you have gained some experience, and learn just how the different nitro blends affect your engines performance, it will be appropriate for you to start experimenting with different blends. Eventually you will find the nitro/oil mix that works best for the way you run your radio controlled boat.

Should you use nitro fuel that you’ve had in storage for several months?

Maybe…! Nitro fuel will definitely become unusable if it is exposed to too much moisture and sunlight. For that reason, how  you store your nitro fuel is more important than how long you have stored it.

Knowing that, if you have properly stored your nitro fuel, it is most likely safe to use no matter how long you have stored it. Your best practice, if you have nitro fuel that isn’t going to be used for several months, you should leave it in its original container, sealed, and in a cool, dark, dry place. Once you open the container, you create a situation where it is more likely that moisture will get into your fuel.

It’s also best to dispose of any nitro fuel you haven’t used from your field fueling bottles if you don’t plan on using it within a couple of days. Don’t  return that fuel to the original container for long term storage… you will only ruin the whole batch!

You should be aware of the fact that the methanol in nitro fuel attracts moisture. Water in your fuel will very likely hurt a glow engine. Therefore, do not leave your nitro fuel cans open any longer than it takes for you to re-fuel your radio controlled boat. Be careful and

limit your fuels’ exposure to air, especially if you live in a humid area.

Always keep your fuel containers tightly sealed, and stored in a dry location.

One more thing you should be aware of is that the nitromethane in nitro fuel breaks down with prolonged exposure to the sun. Once the fuel is degraded, the  nitromethane will not perform as it should. Keep this in mind when you are out at the lake, and keep your nitro fuel out of direct sunlight. If you happen to use a clear container for re-fueling, make sure you cover it, or hide it under a picnic table when you’re not using it. (My suggestion is that you use a container that isn’t clear!). When the day is done, store your tightly sealed containers of nitro fuel in the dark, and out of direct sunlight.

If you handle your fuel properly, and store it the right way, you will certainly get much longer use out of it!

Regarding the idea of how to tune a guitar, the first point to be mentioned is the perfect meaning of tuning. Normally a guitar has six strings, each of which is of different size and posses different note value. Tuning means adjusting the pitch of each of these strings so that they play the correct note. A String Tuning – To tune the fifth string, the first thing to be done is to placing the index finger of the left hand just behind the 5th fret of the 6th string and slowly playing the 6th string at the 5th fret with the right hand. Next is to adjust the 5th string tuning peg gently until both the notes are same.

D string tuning – Same as the last one, the tuning of the 3rd string can be done by putting the first finger of the left hand behind the 5th fret on the A string, which is the D note. Then gently tuning the 4th string i.e. the D note to the last one is the only thing to follow.

G string Tuning – Just like the last one, the tuning of the G – string needs placing the first finger of the left hand behind the 5th fret on the D string, which is the G note. Then a gentle tuning of the G-string to that note is all to be done.

B String Tuning – The tuning needs the first finger of the left hand to be placed behind the 4th fret and the rest is same as the earlier one, i.e. to adjust to the last one.

E’ String Tuning – The tuning needs the first finger of the left hand to be placed behind the 5th fret on the B String, which is the E’note. Rest is to adjust E string to that of the last string.

Many professional musicians tend to use electronic tuners to tune their guitars, (or get their roadies to do it); these can be purchased for a modest fee from most music shops.

For most beginner or hobby guitarists the preferred method is by ear. As well as obviously working to tune the instrument the very act of tuning this way is good training for the novice musicians’ ear.

There are several ways to tune a guitar by ear; the easiest way for the beginner is relative tuning whereby each string is tuned to the preceding string to it. Many intermediate or advanced players prefer to use harmonics as a more accurate method, another more accurate technique still although slightly more complicated is to tune the instrument using equal temperament.

The following methods assume that the first string is already tuned to the correct pitch either by adjusting the pitch to a correctly tuned piano or by other means such as a pitch pipe or tuning fork.

Relative tuning:

With relative tuning, begin by fretting an A note on the low E string at the 5th fret, while this note is still ringing out pick the open A string and adjust the tuning until the pitch of the two notes match.

Tip No. 1. It is always best to detune the string being tuned downwards in pitch first (loosen off), and then tune up to the correct pitch (tighten up).

Tip No. 2. When tuning try to listen out for a wobble in the sound, the more out of tune the two notes are then the faster the wobble will be and as you tune the second note up to the pitch of the first the wobble will slow down to nothing until the two are perfectly attuned.

After tuning the A string, repeat the procedure with the D string fretting the D note on the 5th fret of the A string and tuning the open D string to the same pitch.

Repeat once again with the G string, things change slightly when it comes to tuning the B string for the B note on the G string is located at the fourth fret not the 5th.

Finally, tune the open E string to the E note located once again at the 5th fret on the B string above.

Harmonic tuning:

In this method, the guitar is tuned using predominantly the natural harmonics located at the 5th and 7th frets of each string.

Tip No.3. To sound a natural harmonic on your guitar lightly touch the string directly above the fret wire indicated only gently though the string must not be pressed against the actual fret board. This may take a bit of practice to achieve initially.

Assuming the low E string is already tuned strike a natural harmonic above the 5th fret, while this note is still sounding strike a harmonic at the 7th fret on the A string and tune that note up to the harmonic of the E string.

Repeat this procedure for tuning the D and G strings sounding harmonics on the 5thand 7th frets respectively.

Once again, due to the nature of the guitar fret board the tuning technique changes slightly for the B string, in this instance sound a harmonic at the 7th fret on the low E string and tune the open B string to that pitch.

For the high E string return to the previous scenario strike a harmonic at the 5th fret on the B string and strike one at the 7th fret on the E string tuning it again until the two pitches match.

Equal Temperament Tuning:

The science behind equal tempered tuning is more complex. Basically, while trying not to delve in to the physics of sound waves and harmonic principles the object here is to tune the guitar in such a way that across the entire fret board we are equally in tune across all twelve keys (actually slightly detuned).

While tuning your guitar using the first two methods described in this article you should have noticed that your open chords sound really nice and indeed barre chords played at the low end of the neck sound good also, but the further you move up the guitar neck with the same shape barre chord the less in tune your instrument begins to sound. You can combat this to a degree by using equal temperament tuning which is basically compromising the tuning in some keys to allow for better tuning in all of the other keys.

The method for this tuning technique is described below.

First strike a natural harmonic at the 5th fret low E string while this note is still ringing play an E note on your open high E string and tune the high E to the harmonic so both E strings are now tuned.

Next strike a another harmonic on the low E string this time at the 12th fret, now play the E note at the 2nd fret on the D string and tune this to the harmonic.

Now play a harmonic at the 12th fret on the D string and play the D note at the 3rdfret on the B string again tune the B string till both notes are in unison.

Strike the same harmonic at the 12th fret on the D string and fret a D note on the G string at the 7th fret and tune.

At this point you can check the tunability of the instrument by sounding a harmonic at the 12th fret on the G string and comparing it to the already tuned G note at the 3rdfret on the High E string.

Finally to tune the A string, fret an A note at the 2nd fret on the G string and strike the harmonic at the 12th fret on the A string then tune the A string accordingly.
