How CloudFlare increases speed and security of your site

This is a guest post written and contributed by CloudFlare. CloudFlare makes it easy for any site to be as fast and secure as the Internet giants.

CloudFlare, a web performance and security company, is excited to announce our partnership with RFE Hosting! If you haven’t heard about CloudFlare before, our value proposition is simple: we’ll make any website twice as fast and protect it from a broad range of web threats.

Today, hundreds of thousands of websites—ranging from individual blogs to ecommerce sites to the websites of Fortune 500 companies to national governments—use CloudFlare to make their sites faster and more secure. We power more than 28 billion monthly page views—more than Amazon.com, Wikipedia, Twitter, Zynga and AOL combined—and nearly 25% of the Internet’s population regularly passes through our network.

Faster web performance

CloudFlare is designed to take a great hosting platform like RFE Hosting and make it even better.

We run 14 data centers strategically located around the world. When you sign up for CloudFlare, we begin routing your traffic to the nearest data center.

As your traffic passes through the data centers, we intelligently determine what parts of your website are static versus dynamic. The static portions are cached on our servers for a short period of time, typically less than 2 hours before we check to see if they’ve been updated. By automatically moving the static parts of your site closer to your visitors, the overall performance of your site improves significantly.

CloudFlare’s intelligent caching system also means you save bandwidth, which means saving money, and decreases the load on your servers, which means your web application will run faster and more efficiently than ever. On average, CloudFlare customers see a 60% decrease in bandwidth usage, and a 65% in total requests to their servers. The overall effect is that CloudFlare will typically cut the load time for pages on your site by 50% which means higher engagement and happier visitors.

Broad web security

Over the course of 2011, CloudFlare identified a 700% increase in the number of distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) we track on the Internet (see the chart below). As attacks like these increase, CloudFlare is stepping up to protect sites.

CloudFlare’s security protections offer a broad range of protections against attacks such as DDoS, hacking or spam submitted to a blog or comment form. What is powerful about our approach is that the system gets smarter the more sites that are part of the CloudFlare community. We analyze the traffic patterns of hundreds of millions of visitors in real time and adapt the security systems to ensure good traffic gets through and bad traffic is stopped.

In time, our goal is nothing short of making attacks against websites a relic of history. And, given our scale and the billions of different attacks we see and adapt to every year, we’re well on our way to achieving that for sites on the CloudFlare network.

Signing up

Any website can deploy CloudFlare, regardless of your underlying platform. By integrating closely with RFE Hosting, we make the process of setting up CloudFlare “1 click easy” through your existing RFE Hosting cPanel dashboard. Just look for the CloudFlare icon, choose the domain you want to enable, and click the orange cloud. That’s it!

We’ve kept the price as low as possible and plans offered through RFE Hosting are free. Moreover, we never charge you for bandwidth or storage, therefore saving you tons via reduced bandwidth costs.

For site owners who would like to take advantage of CloudFlare’s advanced offerings, we also offer a ‘Pro’ tier of service for $20/month. The ‘Pro’ tier includes all of the ‘Free’ tier’s offerings, as well as extra features like SSL, full web application firewall and faster analytics.

We’re proud that every day more than a thousand new sites, including some of the largest on the web, join the CloudFlare community. If you’re looking for a faster, safer website, you’ve got a good start with RFE Hosting, but the next step is to join the CloudFlare community.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO
THE GENESIS FRAMEWORK

If you’re building a website these days, you’re in luck.

WordPress has revolutionized the ease and power of what a website (or blog) can do and be.
Now, with the emergence of theme frameworks, you can take WordPress even further.

As you’ll see throughout this free guide, the Genesis Framework for WordPress is much more
than a mere WordPress theme. It’s an underlying framework of immaculate code that’s been
built to achieve three important objectives.

Before we get started, let’s take a quick look at each of these objectives, and why they matter to
what you’re doing online…

Easily spoon-feed Google your content

If you know anything about how SEO works (don’t worry if you don’t, Genesis will take care of a
lot of it for you), you know that Google hands out brownie points for clean code.

As amazing as search engines are, they’re not as smart or grown-up as you might think.

Present them with an orderly, squeaky clean page of code, and you’re well on your way to a
solid ranking for your chosen words.

The Genesis Framework does the bulk of this SEO work for you, so you can get back to work.

————————————————————————————————————-

1 Introduction to Genesis

1.1 What’s a Framework?

In short, a framework is a robust WordPress theme that can be utilized out of the box — as is –
or also easily extended with child themes and hooks (customized code).

Not only do they provide a number of enhancements above and beyond a typical WordPress
theme, they also serve as a platform on which to build added functionality.

1.2 What’s a Child Theme?

A child theme is an extension of a framework comprised of typical WordPress theme elements.

With Genesis, these include a screenshot, theme files, a style sheet, a functions file and an
images directory. These elements are grouped together in what’s known as a child theme
directory and can be activated like any other WordPress theme.

————————————————————————————————-

Add filter so the users can select custom image sizes added by themes and plugin

Add filters for install/upgrade queries, so that unit tests installer can force creating InnoDB tables, so that we can use transactions to revert the database to its initial state after each test

Add inflation support for java.util.zip.Deflater in WP_Http_Encoding::compatible_gzinflate()

Add magic get/set/isset methods to WP_User to avoid data duplication; standardize on WP_User::ID

Add pre_ent2ncr filter

add_site_option should not update existing options, should return a boolean and should only run actions on success

Allow get_blog_option(null,…) to hit the cache for the current blog; new return values for add_blog_option, update_blog_option, delete_blog_option; don’t set the cache in those functions if add/update/delete_option failed

Automatically set ‘compare’ => ‘IN’ in WP_Meta_Query::get_sql() when the meta value is an array

Deprecate get_userdatabylogin() and get_user_by_email()

Deprecate media_upload_(image|audio|video|file)(), type_url_form_(image|audio|video|file)(); these now wrap wp_media_upload_handler() and wp_media_insert_url_form()

Deprecate RSS 0.92 feed and 301 it to the default feed

Deprecate screen_options(), screen_layout(), screen_meta()

Eliminate verbose rewrite rules for ambiguous rewrite structures, resulting in massive performance gains

Fix back compat issues with delete_postmeta and deleted_postmeta actions as these should be passed the meta ID

Fix QTags.closeAllTags(), replace ‘tb’ with ‘ed’ in quicktags,js to make it clear it is the editor instance not the toolbar, small comments quick edit fixes

Fix typos in documentation

Fix wp_update_user() so it doesn’t stomp meta fields

Force display_errors to off when WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY == false; technically a backwards incompatible change so if you want the passthrough to php.ini (which false used to provide) then use WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY === null

Harden up is_user_logged_in() against empty $current_user instances to prevent PHP Notices on XML-RPC requests

Have dbDelta() loop through tables it knows about, rather than loop through a potentially expensive and definitely unnecessary SHOW TABLES

Improve _wp_menu_output()

Improve the parsing of email addresses in wp_mail to re-support RFC2822 nameless “<address@…>” style

Instantiate some MS variables as objects before using them

Introduce ->mysql to allow drop-ins to declare themselves as MySQL and therefore allow minimum version checks to still apply

Introduce is_main_query() that compares the query object against $wp_the_query

Introduce metadata_exists(), WP_User::get_data_by(), WP_User::get(), WP_User::has_prop(). Don’t fill user objects with meta

Introduce new hooks, registered_post_type for register_post_type, and registered_taxonomy for register_taxonomy

Introduce register_meta(), get_metadata_by_mid(), and *_post_meta capabilities

Introduce wp_allowed_protocols() for use in wp_kses() and esc_url()

Introduce wp_cache_incr() and wp_cache_decr()

Introduce WP_Dependencies::get_data() method, change scripts and styles priority to follow the “natural” order in HTML, i.e. the last one wins

Introduce wp_get_db_schema() for retrieving various flavors of db schema; eliminates need to use global; allows multiple calls to wpmu_create_blog()

Introduce wp_suspend_cache_addition() to allow reduced memory usage when cache additions aren’t useful

Make check_theme_switched() run an action so plugins and themes authors can avoid losing widgets when switching themes

Optimise get_term to not query for term_id = 0 and improve the prepared query to use %d for the term_id

Optimize parse_request for the home page

Performance improvement for wp_list_pluck()

Properly handle display of Order, Template, and Parent page attributes in Quick/Bulk Edit

Properly handle nested arrays in wp_list_filter()

Recognize urls that start with a question mark as relative urls that do not require a scheme to be prepended

Refactor Quicktags

Remove return by ref from get_role()

Remove support for <link rel=start>, end, up, and index. These rel=”" values have been dropped by the HTML Working Group

Remove the old root feed files, but don’t add these files to old_files to leave them on existing installs

Require show_ui rather than public for a taxonomy’s parent post type

Rework get_hidden_meta_boxes() to leverage a full WP_Screen object; prevents custom post types from having their explicitly supported meta boxes being hidden by default

Set up the post global variable in the comment feed loops so that any calls to post related template tags work correctly

Store screen help and options as static data against WP_Screen; individual screen objects no longer hold data it can’t re-generate on construction or otherwise fetch; convert_to_screen() now returns a WP_Screen object; various globals are gone; introduces WP_Screen::get_option(); allows for a formal factory to be introduced later

Support an array or comma-seperated list of excluded category IDs in get_adjacent_post()

Support for using wp_enqueue_script() and wp_enqueue_style() in the HTML body; all scripts and styles are added in the footer

Sync pomo library with the current GlotPress version

Turn delete_meta() , get_post_meta_by_id(), update_meta(), delete_post_meta_by_key() into wrappers around the Metadata API; add back compat *_postmeta actions to Metadata API

Turn is_blog_user() into a convenience wrapper around get_blogs_of_user(); fixes is_blog_user() for blog prefixes that do not contain a blog ID

Update blog last_updated time only on publish_post; both private_to_published and publish_phone are overly broad and otherwise redundant

Update jQuery to 1.7.1

Update jQuery UI to 1.8.16

Update Plupload to 1.5.1.1

Update quicktags.js (HTML editor)

Update TinyMCE to 3.4.5

Use add_option() method, introduce add_option_context() method for adding specific text above the screen options

Use get_template_directory() instead of TEMPLATEPATH in Twentys Ten and Eleven

Use json_encode() for adding script data (formerly l10n); add the same functionality to WP_Styles for adding inline css after a stylesheet has been outputted

Use wp_print_scripts() in install.php

Various PHPdoc updates including: for all_items, menu_name, WP_List_Table::views(), cache.php, get_option(), wpdb::prepare(), get_template_part(), esc_url(), get_meta_sql(), WP_Screen, WP_Http_Encoding::compatible_gzinflate(), zeroise(), wp_add_script_before(), wp_editor()

WP_Filesystem_*::mkdir() untrailingslash path consistently, don’t waste time attempting to create an “empty” path

Wow this came to me as a big shocker, and quite a stupid update. Not sure what Google is thinking with this move. It seems like just a way for them to build up Google+.

Google Friend Connect—Friend Connect allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a few snippets of code. We’re retiring the service for all non-Blogger sites on March 1, 2012. We encourage affected sites to create a Google+ page and place a Google+ badge on their site so they can bring their community of followers to Google+ and use new features like Circles and Hangouts to keep in touch.

Taken from their lastest blog post:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/more-spring-cleaning-out-of-season.html

So I would suggest you get what ever new system or social networking option you want to move to, and get it setup now so by the time they flip the switch and bury GFC, so you wont be left in the Dark.

Here is a guide that can help you get started with a Google+ Page:
http://billing.rfehosting.com/knowledgebase/86/Google-plus-Page-Creation.html

And a Link to the Google+ Badge setup:

The past couple weeks i have been searching around the Interweb, and found many people have problems uploading and inserting images into their WordPress posts/pages.

So I have put together this quick guide on how to do just that!

There are 2 ways of doing this:

In WordPress there is the “Media” Library that allows you to upload images to your blog, then use the link provided to add it to a page/post or anywhere else on your site.

The second way is to upload/insert it directly from the post or page you are creating using the menu option shown on the page and post interface.

So here is the quick guide on each method on how to upload and insert images onto posts or pages of your blog

Post – Page Insert/Upload Menu Button:

Step 1: Make sure you are on the visual editor tab while creating your post/page.

Step 2: Find the “Upload/Insert” menu bar area on your post screen – http://screencast.com/t/oSygM2CD

Step 3: Press the “Add an image” Button, and select the image you want to upload/insert – http://screencast.com/t/s39Ns6sgqN1 – http://screencast.com/t/taz9ODn6ubuP

Step 4: Once you have selected your image, you can then adjust the settings for that image(title, caption, size,alignment options), then click “Insert into post” – http://screencast.com/t/rbdMcMsSpUe

Step 5: You have now clicked the “Insert into post” button, so should now have an image showing up in your post/page you are working on

Media Library image uploading/insert into post:

Step 1: Locate the “Media” left side menu option in your WordPress dashboard, then press “add new” – http://screencast.com/t/3femsFdgTbr

Step 2: Select the files (yes you can upload in bulk using this option) you want to upload, then upload them – http://screencast.com/t/Ni7czy4ZN

Step 3: Once uploaded you can now go to your post/page and insert them from the media library by following these easy steps:

Click the upload/insert button – http://screencast.com/t/rJonpCy2q

Then click the “Media Library” Tab – http://screencast.com/t/BEm598uYeqQ

Once clicked, you will then see the images you have uploaded – http://screencast.com/t/XOfNXYNEkRw

From that screen you can click the “show” button next to the image you want to insert, make your changes to the image, then click the “insert into post” and that will add it to your current post/page you are working on.

Here is a quick guide on how to setup your Google Analytics tracking on WordPress.

We recommend using a plugin called “All In One Webmaster” as it makes the process quick and easy.

Step 1: Download/install “All In One Webmaster” @ http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-webmaster/

Step 2: Login to your google analytics account

Step 3: Find the UA- profile number for your website you want to track, if you do not have one, go ahead and create one. (the profile id is located in the “Website Profiles” section of Google Analytics.)

Step 4: Copy that UA- Profile ID.

Step 5: Login to your WordPress blog, go to settings > All In One Webmaster.

Step 6: Locate the “Analytics Options” area in the plugin, and paste your UA- Profile id into the Google analytics field – http://screencast.com/t/K0HEC10G1

Step 7: Save it!

And that’s it! Once that process is complete you can now verify, and start tracking your site stats with Google Analytics.

Here is a guide with a few steps to follow if your site/blog is down for you, but are not sure if it really is.

Many of our clients seem to think that if they cannot get to their site, then it is down. Most of the time it is because they have been locked out of their account for to many failed login attempts.

So if you are not able to visit your site/blog and think it may be down, here are a couple tools that will allow you to really find out what is up!

First, here is an obvious one that can help – http://www.isup.me – http://downorisitjustme.com/ - http://www.checksite.us - http://www.sitestatus.net/

Another way would be to have your friends visit your site and if it is down for them, then it is really down.

And the last way would be to contact your hosting provider to find out if it is up, and if it is to unblock your computer, and help you remember your log-in info.

Here is a quick guide on what to look for in your sidebar/posts html code if all the sudden you have made a post, or added a sidebar widget and your layout is all messed up.

From my past experiences i have seen this happen many times, it is always the same thing. Client copy/pasted some info from another page in the visual editor and so it added extra formatting that killed the sites layout.

Ways you can prevent this is to use your own “ORIGINAL” content, or if you are copy/pasting, please take a look at your html tab, or your widget html code after the fact and make sure there is no extra html code that will change your layout. Or do it manually and add the links,images yourself.

Here is a guide that can explain how to create links and add images using html.

So to fix the problem if it has happened to you, this is what you look for if it has happened to you:

Double </div> tags is the #1 cause of this issue. So you need to look in your html coding for your posts,widgets and make sure all tags have a opening and closing tag. If you go through the code, and find it looks like this:

</div></div>

And if one of them is not matching up with a partner, then that would be your problem.

My recommendation is to always use your own unique content as you get ranked better if it is, but if you have to use someone else’s then make sure you check its code for extra coding.

Step 1: Download, install, and activate “Greg’s Threaded Comment Numbering” Plugin

Step 2: Go to Appearance > Editor > Find functions.php, and add the following code to the file:

add_action ('genesis_before_comment', 'child_numbered_comments');
function child_numbered_comments () {
if (function_exists('gtcn_comment_numbering'))
echo gtcn_comment_numbering($comment->comment_ID, $args);
}

Here is an example:

Once you have done all that, you should now have all your comments on all your posts numbered.

Here is a great guide on the difference between the WordPress Visual, and HTML Editors.

————————————————————————————————————–

If you know the difference between the WordPress Visual and HTML editors, and when and how to use them, you can keep your site/blog looking more organized and professional.

I believe i have lost count how many times I have seen the same issue come up from a client “My WordPress Blog is screwed up?! Please Help!“. And every time it is the formatting added into the post from an outside word processing program like MS Word or an HTML editor like DreamWeaver, or even from copying and pasting info from another blog. I am not able to explain how it happens but it can really screw up your posts as well as your sidebar/widgets. posting from another program and pasting it into the WordPress Visual editor might bring in some formatting elements that WordPress does not understand or know what to do with. And most of these issues may not show up until after you create a new post that appears above the problem post.

So now that it is recommended that you do not create a post in your favorite program and paste it into your WordPress post whats a blogger to do? First of, if you are doing it just for a spellchecker then might I suggest Firefox as a browser, as it has a built in spellchecker already. But if you still are thinking of doing these types of things then try using the built-in tools available in the two different WordPress post editors.

If you have the visual editor turned off in your profile settings, then you will have two tabs available when creating a new post. The Visual and HTML editors are similar to the different tabs available in an HTML editing application like DreamWeaver. The Visual being the WYSIWYG and the HTML for the programmer who knows code better than most of us know the back of our hands. The HTML editor can be useful to the non programmer, say you create your posts in MS Word or similar just for the spell-check, punctuation and other goodies. You can paste the post into the HTML editor and it will not bring in all that extra formatting. The HTML editor will treat any regular text pasted or typed into it as plain old regular text. You then can click the Visual editor tab and use the Visual toolbar to add any formatting to the post.

So im sure you are thinking that if you create something in an HTML editor like DreamWeaver and then copy the raw HTML code and paste it into the WordPress HTML editor all will be good. Well most the time, but probably not all. There may be some HTML code that WordPress or PHP will not understand or process so you are better off pasting just the plain text into or typing in the faster WordPress HTML editor and then tabbing over to the Visual editor and formatting the post how you want.

The WordPress Visual editor is very useful for adding images/videos into posts, creating links and even changing the text size or color and other things. And if you have an advanced WYSIWYG editor plugin like TinyMCE Advanced, which adds even more tools to the Visual toolbar, you really don’t need to use any other third party application to create your posts. Adding and keeping plugins up to date like TinyMCE Advanced can be a pain but if you really need all the options and features then it may be worth the trouble.

So to sum it all up, try to use the HTML editor for just plain text (unless of course you know the real html code) then tab to the Visual editor to add the formatting, links and images into the post. This will assure that WordPress can handle what you are throwing at it.

Today’s Daily Internet Tip is about HTML, and how to use it.

So i thought today id focus on helping those that need it get help on learning HTML.

HTML, which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.

HTML is what websites are written in, its the building block of the internet.

For many years i have been building/customizing websites and have had the opportunity to learn alot about how HTML works. Just the past couple years i have finally started to understand it, and really get into it.

I remember when i was in Middle School and i was in a Technology class. We had a project that i don’t remember all the details but for my project i chose to create a web page.

I had no idea how or what to do, so i looked around the Interweb and found a few great guides on learning HTML.

Here are a few of my favorite sites on learning HTML:

w3schools

htmlgoodies

I still use both those sites today, they are a very good reference, and id suggest them to anyone that wants to learn HTML, or wants to better their skills.

Here are a few examples on some HTML code with what they do.
How to create links:

First here is the link, or Anchor code: <a href=”link”>Link Name</a>.
And here is a link in action:
RFEHosting.com
And the code for this link:
<a title=”RFEHosting” href=”http://www.RFEHosting.com” target=”_blank”>RFEHosting.com</a>

“<a” is your starting tag, its the “Anchor” tag.
“Href” is the reference tag, meaning what you linking to.

The “title” tag creates text that will display when you mouse over the link.

“Target” is the target the link will go, some options for its values are:

"_blank" <-- Most popular, opens the link in a new window/tab

"_parent"

"_self"

"_top"

Then you close the link by using the “>”, then you name your link, And fully close it using </a>.

How to insert images.

Here is the basic syntax for inserting images into a webpage:

<img src=”imagelink” alt=”" title=”" />

Then here is a example of its usage:

<img title=”RFEHosting” src=”http://www.rfehosting.com/images/logo.png” alt=”RFEHOSting Logo” />

“<img” is your opening code to start inserting a link into a webpage.

The “title” tag creates text that will display when you mouse over the image .

“src” is the source location of the image.

“alt” is alternate text that describes the image.

Then you close the image with “/>”

Links and images are the most used HTML tags, they are used on pretty much every single page on the internet.

Here are some links of some “Cheat Sheets” for HTML:

HTML
HTML Characters

That ends this internet tip, till next time.

If you have any questions,comments or other guides that could help, please feel free to comment and leave links.

Thanks

4.) Hover your mouse cursor over this sun, and click on the left most option that looks like a plus sign “+”. You will now have a large mouse cursor, and the purpose is to highlight the area that you want to capture. You will most likely want to capture what is going on in your web browser, so you will want to point the cursor over the topmost area of your browser window. Once you’ve highlighted the area that you want to capture, click your mouse.

Note: If the area that is highlighted does not look correct, just press your ESC (escape) button on your keyboard and re-select the area that you want to capture.

5.) Once you’ve selected your capture area, options will appear at the bottom left-hand corner of the capture area. You will have the choice to choose between:

Capturing a picture

Capturing a video

——————————————————————————————————————————–

If you select the “Capture Image”

A picture has now been taken of the area, and the picture will appear on your screen in front of you.

6.) Enter a name for the image and then click “Share via Screencast.com” option. (It is the leftmost option on the menu bar that appears underneath your picture. It looks like three arrows moving upward).

Your image will upload to a public web server, and when it is completed, a success message will display:

7.) Click on the link that says “Your capture has been sent and the link is ready to be pasted”. Your web browser will open up to the picture that has been uploaded.

On this new page, look to the top of your web browser and copy the URL. You can now share your screenshot by pasting that URL, because it will take anyone to view your picture.

Click here to go to the next step

————————————————————————————————————————————-

If you select the “Capture Video” option:

6b.) A countdown will occur, after which a video will be recorded of whatever you do inside of the capture area. Once you have finished, click on the “Stop” button located to the bottom left corner of your capture area.

A video has now been taken of your actions inside the capture area, and the preview will appear on your screen in front of you.

7b.) Enter a name for the video and then click “Share via Screencast.com” option. (It is the leftmost option on the menu bar that appears underneath your picture. It looks like three arrows moving upward).

Your video will upload to a public web server, and when it is completed, a success message will display:

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

8.) After you’ve captured a video or picture, click on the link that says “Your capture has been sent and the link is ready to be pasted.” It will open that link in your web browser window to show you what people will see when you paste the link.

Now you have an image and /or video of your actions, and can paste a link so that anyone around the world can view this picture / video.

WordPress 3.1.1 is now available. This maintenance and security release fixes almost thirty issues in 3.1, including:

Some security hardening to media uploads

Performance improvements

Fixes for IIS6 support

Fixes for taxonomy and PATHINFO (/index.php/) permalinks

Fixes for various query and taxonomy edge cases that caused some plugin compatibility issues

Version 3.1.1 also addresses three security issues discovered by WordPress core developers Jon Cave and Peter Westwood, of our security team. The first hardens CSRF prevention in the media uploader. The second avoids a PHP crash in certain environments when handling devilishly devised links in comments, and the third addresses an XSS flaw.

We suggest you update to 3.1.1 promptly. Download 3.1.1 or update automatically from the Dashboard → Updates menu in your site’s admin area.

Our release haiku:

Only the geeks know
What half this stuff even means
Don’t worry — update

RFE Hosting now offers VPS Hosting!

By using the industry leading virtualization solution Virtuozzo, we offer top of the line VPS packages for all customer types. Virtuozzo allows you to have several isolated VPS’s (Virtual Private Servers) on one physical server, all with root access. This means other customers CANNOT affect your performance; we back that with a 100% guarantee.

All Virtuozzo VPS’s come with an end user powerpanel allowing you as the customer to restart, troubleshoot or backup your VPS without contacting RFE Hosting. Unlimited domains and all available add-ons for Plesk, cPanel or DirectAdmin are available at your request.

Top 5 Reasons why a VPS is better then a Shared or Reseller Package

Want to know why a Virtual Private Server is better then a shared hosting solution? Read the five biggest advantages below:

Reliability

With the use of a RFE Hosting VPS you will experience reliability at its best. With extensive technical knowledge and experience you can expect reliable VPS’s with industry leading uptime.

Flexibility

Ability to customize system configuration, install any applications and server wide software to fit your sites needs. Full root level access and almost complete control over the system configuration brings hosting to next level without the dedicated servers’ price tag

Performance

With custom built servers you will benefit from Enterprise class hardware with RAID-10 storage for redundancy. No factory built servers here!

Easy-to-use GUI/Complete control over the VPS

This is a browser based GUI tool which allows you to restart, troubleshoot, and restore your own VPS without the help of your provider. You can also restart the core server components such as Apache, FTP, and DNS; even deploy a fresh OS with your former VPS account’s data mounted to the new OS. This is all functionality free with all VPS packages. Restore a backup on the fly if you need to reinstall due to some sort of attack.

Security/Upgrades

We manage the physical servers and assure their properly secured. Individual VPS’s are secured out of the box. We can also assist with further server security if requested.

Dynamic

When using a VPS, you have the ease of mind to know your performance will never be lacking. As you grow along with your web traffic, the VPS will adapt as needed with the use of the Virtuozzo technology. Upgrading to a higher resource VPS is simple with no downtime.

As an Operating System virtualization solution, the unique architecture enables the most efficient use of hardware, software and management resources. The light overhead and efficient design of Virtuozzo makes it the right virtualization choice for server consolidation, disaster recovery and all production servers with live applications and data.

We will be updating all our WordPress Clients to this new version within the hour.

WordPress 3.0.5 is now available and is a security hardening update for all previous WordPress versions.

This security release is required if you have any untrusted user accounts, but it also comes with important security enhancements and hardening. All WordPress users are strongly encouraged to update.

Three point oh point five
Enhances security
Three point one comes soon

The release addresses a number of issues and provides two additional enhancements:

Two moderate security issues were fixed that could have allowed a Contributor- or Author-level user to gain further access to the site.

One information disclosure issue was addressed that could have allowed an Author-level user to view contents of posts they should not be able to see, such as draft or private posts.

Two security enhancements were added. One improved the security of any plugins which were not properly leveraging our security API. The other offers additional defense in depth against a vulnerability that was fixed in previous release.

Thanks to Nils Jueneman and Saddy for their private and responsible disclosures to security@wordpress.org for two of the issues. The others were reported or repaired by our security team.

Download 3.0.5 or update automatically from the Dashboard > Updates menu in your site’s admin area. Please update immediately.

I will post about the details sometime in January.

Thank you again to all those that have made us a success, and we look forward to 2011 with all the awesomeness it brings.

Version 3.0.4 of WordPress, available immediately through the update page in your dashboard or for download here, is a very important update to apply to your sites as soon as possible because it fixes a core security bug in our HTML sanitation library, called KSES. I would rate this release as “critical.”

I realize an update during the holidays is no fun, but this one is worth putting down the eggnog for. In the spirit of the holidays, consider helping your friends as well.

If you are a security researcher, we’d appreciate you taking a look over this changeset as well to review our update. We’ve given it a lot of thought and review but since this is so core we want as many brains on it as possible. Thanks to Mauro Gentile and Jon Cave (duck_) who discovered and alerted us to these XSS vulnerabilities first.
