If you travel to San Francisco, you may wish to consider staying at the Hotel Triton, which is in the heart of Union Square.

Hotel Triton

The hotel is nestled among buildings on a busy downtown San Francisco street (Grant Avenue).  There is shopping on most of the streets around the hotel, lots of restaurants nearby, and there’s a Starbucks across the street.

Hotel Triton Location

We were in town for a lacrosse tournament on Treasure Island, so we found the Hotel Triton to be in a good location- it was easy to get to the freeway from there.  And if you’re in town for sightseeing, it’s not too far from the Ferry Building and Pier 39.

Macys

Union Square is wonderful for shopping.  This HUGE Macy’s is just a couple of blocks away from the hotel.  During the holidays, they had an ice skating rink set up in the square.

Chinatown Entrance
You can actually see the entrance to Chinatown from the front door of the hotel!

Hotel Triton Lobby

Here’s part of the lobby area.  They host a complimentary wine hour every evening for hotel guests- and the wine we had was pretty decent too!  As an added bonus they had a tarot card reader in the lobby (sometimes they have live music or poetry readings).

Hotel Triton Lobby 2

The Hotel Triton has a general funky vibe.  These quirky chairs sit in the front lobby.

Hotel Triton Bike Rental

Cruising bikes are available for hotel guests.  It was raining most of the time during our stay, so we didn’t get to utilize this cool offering!

Hotel Triton Pet Friendly
The Hotel Triton offers some pet-friendly rooms.  They will provide a dog bed and bowls for water and food.  Pet sitting and walking services are available too.  I’m totally bringing my pup next time we visit!

Hotel Triton Fish

In true Kimpton fashion, you can take a goldfish to your room with you if you are feeling lonely.

Hotel Triton 2

We were welcomed with all kinds of fun goodies.

Triton Hotel 1
The hotel’s quirky vibe is also evident in the room decor.  We had a deluxe room with two double beds- perfect for two people, but a little crowded for more.  If you’re up for it, they have some celebrity suites designed by Jerry Garcia and Kathy Griffin.

Jack Kerouac Hotel Triton

The wallpaper consists of a million typed words by author Jack Kerouac.  My son kept us entertained by reading the wall to us!

Hotel Triton Chalkboard
A chalkboard hanging on the wall is hard to resist writing on.

Hotel Triton 3

The vanity area is small, and it’s located in the general area of room entrance.  The bathroom and shower are in a separate room.

Bay Bridge San Francisco
Our stay at the Hotel Triton was a good one- great location, fun shopping, fairly quiet, and an excellent hotel staff.  The rain left the city as we were leaving the city, and we had a beautiful sunset going over the Bay Bridge.

For more information about the Hotel Triton, visit their website:  http://www.hoteltriton.com/
Excellent restaurant recommendation (nearby): Kuletos (Italian) http://www.kuletos.com/
Also recommend: Godzila Sushi (we took Uber to the restaurant, but we decided to walk back to the hotel because it was a beautiful night.  It was a long walk, but we saw some neat neighborhoods and enjoyed the adventure).

Disclosure:  Thank you to the Hotel Triton for hosting me and my family.  I’m happy to share our experience with RecipeGirl readers

It’s really great living so close to beautiful Lake Tahoe, so my family tries to get up there as much as humanly possible.  My husband and I snuck away for a couple of nights last week to check out The Ritz- Carlton.  October is considered “off-season” there, so we were able to secure an extremely reasonable rate for this luxury hotel.

Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe

The hotel is located off highway 267 – between King’s Beach and Truckee, and it’s positioned mid-mountain at Northstar Ski Resort.  Travel the winding road off the highway and up the mountain a few miles, and you end up landing in this magical place.  It’s truly a grand sight- like a castle nestled against the mountain.  From the moment we arrived, the staff at the hotel were gracious, professional, polite, helpful and kind.

Welcome Ritz Carlton

Although we paid for our hotel stay, they did know I was coming.  So there was this fun little surprise of goodies waiting in our room.

Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe Deluxe Room

Our room was this exact one:  a deluxe with a view.  The fireplace is a must for being in the mountains, so we totally utilized that.  And there is a little balcony to sneak out onto as well.  We snuck out there often to drink wine and enjoy the mountainside views.

Marshmology Ritz Carlton

Every day from 4 to 5pm, they host a S’Mores event near their fire pit.  Of course, we had to check that out the day we got there.  They had classic marshmallows and some homemade marshmallows too.

Marshmology Ritz

That’s my husband toasting his marshmallow at the fire pit.  We took advantage of this fire pit later in the evening after dinner also to enjoy an after-dinner drink and cuddle by the fire.

Marshmology S'Mores

S’mores done- ta da!  My husband chose to make his with Cookies & Cream Hershey’s Bar instead of regular chocolate.  This was a fun afternoon treat!

Ritz Bocce Ball
There is a bocce ball court nearby and walking paths everywhere.  Can you spot the ski runs of Northstar in the background?

Ritz Carlton Hotel Lobby

Before our first night’s dinner, we found this cozy space in the lobby to enjoy a glass of wine.  The whole resort has a great mountain feel to it.

Manzanita

Dinner the 1st night was at the resort’s restaurant:  Manzanita.  The restaurant has an open kitchen, so you can see it from all over the restaurant (though it’s not noisy).  Manzanita is designed to have a mountain-feel to it, and its menu reflects that too.  They use seasonal produce and feature organic and local meats and products as available.  We sat at that table just to the left of the fire.  It was cozy and quiet.  A bottle of red wine went very well with our meal.  Highlights were the  simple Butter Lettuce Salad with Point Reyes Blue Cheese, and also the featured special:  Roasted Squab.  It was our first time having squab (a bird)- it was roasted perfectly, and it was absolutely delicious.  The twice-baked lemon cheesecake for dessert was also a delight to sample.

You’ve gotta love a trip to New York City in the spring.  It’s beautiful!  I was brought into the city to spend a day with the folks at Pepperidge Farm, but my travel partner (Sandy from Reluctant Entertainer) and I came in a couple of days early to enjoy the city.  We had a blast… so I thought I’d share a little bit about where we stayed, what we ate, and what we did while we where there!

Tuscany Hotel NYC 10
We stayed at the St. Giles Tuscany Hotel– near Grand Central Station and the Empire State Building.  It was a nice, quiet area, and we were extremely happy with our stay there.

Tuscany Hotel NYC Location

Here’s a peek at the map if you’re at all familiar with New York City.  There aren’t amazing restaurants right around the hotel or anything, but we ended up walking to just about everything within a 1.5 mile radius (or taking a short cab ride).  We walked to Macy’s at Herald Square and we walked to Times Square.  The weather was nice, so it wasn’t a problem walking in comfortable shoes!

Tuscany Hotel NYC 3

The Tuscany Hotel has a cool, funky vibe.  This is the lobby.  On the 2nd floor is a fitness room.  It’s much larger than other boutique hotel fitness rooms with several treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and a large weight area.  We worked out every day we were there (seriously!!)

Tuscany Hotel NYC 11

There is a small bar and eating area in the lobby too.  They serve a beautiful continental style breakfast in the morning, and then at 5:30pm they turn it into a full-bar.

Tuscany Hotel NYC 5

The beds.  Oh, the beds.  The beds were really comfortable and the linens were nice.  I slept like a baby (remember I mentioned that this hotel is located in a quiet area?)

Tuscany Hotel NYC 9

I’ve stayed in quite a few New York hotels, and this is the largest hotel room I’ve stayed in so far.  Tons of space.

Tuscany Hotel NYC 6

Desk/mirror area for computing… or hairdressing… or makeup application!

Tuscany Hotel NYC Bathroom

The bathroom was big too.  Have you ever stayed in a NYC hotel with a teeny tiny bathroom?  Not fun!  This one was big.  And it offered comfy robes and designer soap/shampoo.

Tuscany Hotel NYC 1

Here’s an example of the continental breakfast.  They had everything.  These eggs were the most perfectly hard-boiled eggs I’ve ever had.  I meant to ask them about that!

Tuscany Hotel NYC 2

And that’s the Tuscany!  Sandy and I both agreed that we’d stay there again in a heartbeat.

Shakespeare and Peacock NYC

Just a few doors down from our hotel was this cool place:  The Peacock Restaurant and Shakespeare Pub.  We met up with sweet Maggy from Three Many Cooks and had a drink downstairs in the lively Shakespeare Pub… then we transitioned upstairs to the more sedate Peacock restaurant to nibble Housemade Ricotta and Deviled Eggs.  OMG.  Best decision ever.

JUS by Julie 3 Day Cleanse

It has been about a year since I’ve done a juice cleanse.  I typically really like to do a 3-day juice cleanse every few months.  I just feel like they kind of get me back on track for eating healthy and not wanting to put processed foods into my body (at least for a while).  And I love the way that 3-days of consuming juice-only makes my body feel.  JUS by Julie contacted me recently to see if I’d like to try their cleanse.  I told them that if I tried it, I was going to be writing an honest review of the cleanse- the good and the bad.  They were confident that I’d like their juices better than any other juice cleanse I had tried, so they sent their juices along.

Unlike other juice cleanses I have tried, the JUS by Julie folks don’t recommend any sort of pre-cleanse preparation.  I was a little nervous about going from eating potato chips and wine to cleansing the next day… so I prepped for two days.  First day I cut out all processed foods and wine- ate pretty much protein, veggies and fruit only.  The second day I ate egg whites for breakfast, veggies and fruit the rest of the day, and a small sweet potato for dinner.  I’m also obsessed with Good Earth Sweet & Spicy Decaf tea, so I sipped that quite often.  I lost a couple of pounds in the two days of prepping for the cleanse, and I was really excited to start drinking juice!

JUS 1

DAY 1:  Their juices were delivered overnight via Fed Ex… in an ice-packed box.  I didn’t get mine delivered until 12pm, so I was pretty much starving by then!!

JUS 2

Here’s the lineup of Day 1:  First up was the Green Juice, which they refer to as MORNING GLORY  (romaine + celery + spinach + apple + kale + banana + strawberry).  I’m not a big fan of green juice, so I was not looking forward to this one at all.

My family and I recently visited San Francisco for a two-night stay.  We found a fabulous hotel in a great location:  Kimpton Argonaut Hotel at Fisherman’s Wharf.

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut Front

My son had never really been to San Francisco, and he wanted to be near some pretty iconic things:  Alcatraz Island, Ghirardelli Square, The Ferry Building and the cable cars.  You can probably imagine how happy he was when we drove up and there was a Ben & Jerry’s RIGHT NEXT TO THE HOTEL.  Yes, this made him very happy indeed.  Part of what made the entrance to the hotel fabulous was the superstar doorman.  I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of him, but I hope they keep him forever.  He was super friendly, funny and helpful.  He happily answered all of our questions and gave us recommendations as needed.  Cabs were easy to grab as they came right up to the hotel.

San Francisco- Kimpton Argonaut back view

Here is a view from behind the hotel- looking out toward the wharf and San Francisco Bay.  There is a Starbucks located in the lower right-hand corner of the photo- which was perfect.  The cable car pick-up is right where you see it.  Ghirardelli Square is off to the left of the photo- just 2 blocks from the hotel.  Admittedly, we went there for a sundae each night we were there!  Fisherman’s Wharf sits all along the front of the hotel and for many blocks- lots of shops and seafood restaurants.  We didn’t do much of that, but it’s there if you want it.

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut Hotel Room 1

Here is what our room looked like upon walk-in.  There is a little refrigerator under the TV that was perfect for storing the goodies (like cheese) that we picked up at The Ferry Building (just a short cab ride away).

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut Hotel Room 2

Another view of the appropriately nautically-decorated room.  It really was adorable…

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut Hotel Room 3

… right down to the star-shaped pillows.

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut View From Room

And then we took a peek out our window and saw this!  Beautiful.  And my son was SUPER EXCITED that we could see Alcatraz Island from our hotel room too.

San Francisco Kimpton Argonaut Hotel Room Surprise

Once we got over the excitement of the room itself, we discovered some goodies that were left for us- and a pitcher of warm clam chowder too!!  We scarfed it all down immediately since we had just driven about 5 hours or so to get there.  And then we all fought for pieces of the Ghirardelli chocolate bar.

How sad is this sight? >

GE Washer Dryer 1

Have you ever had to live without a washer/dryer in your house?  I mean… since college??  It’s really, really tough.  When we moved away from San Diego, we sold our washer/dryer set with our house.  We moved into our new place… and… the previous owners did not leave us a washer/dryer!  Not cool!  For someone who is laundry-obsessed (yeah, that would be me), this was a problem.  So in those first few weeks of living in our new home, I dragged laundry OFTEN over to a friend’s house and mooched off of her electricity.

GE Washer Dryer 2

Soon though, our beautiful new set arrived!  Isn’t it the prettiest washer and dryer you’ve ever seen???  I absolutely fell in love with the ruby red.  I mean… if you have to do laundry, you should at least have some pretty stuff to look at, right?  The washer is GE’s ENERGY STAR 4.8 DOE cu. ft. capacity RightHeight Design Front Load Washer (and it’s matching dryer).

GE Washer Dryer 3
It’s beautiful inside and out.  I’ve used it now for three months, and I can honestly say that this is the best functioning washer/dryer set I’ve ever owned- with a lot of really useful options.  (I should mention that my husband and I have had some major washer/dryer DUDS in the 18 1/2 years we’ve been married).  We’re pretty excited about these.

Albion Fit Giveaway
Hey!  I have a fun giveaway to share with you today from Albion Fit– a totally cute line of fitness wear and bathing suits.  Read the details at the end of this post for a chance to win a $175 gift card to Albionfit.com!  Albion’s mission is to provide women with the most luxurious, flattering and hassle-free fitness and leisure apparel on the market.  I’d say they’re doing a pretty good job with that!  Here are some fun facts about their company:

  • designed by women… for women (that’s always a good thing)
  • have adapted a “green living” mindset and a sustainable work environment
  • offer 100% satisfaction on every item they sell and use the best in high-performance fabrics
  • family-owned company (Utah)

Now let me show you a few of the things they have to offer (besides all of the sweet choices you see in the graphic above)…

Albion 2

I’m totally not big on bathing suit season at all.  It frightens me to no end.  But I might be able to swing it in this cute Show Stopper Black and White suit with the adorable side tie to hide stomach bulges!

Albion 3

And if I’m feeling really confident… like I’ve just trained for a 1/2 marathon or have been really good about eating fruits and veggies and have avoided cheesecake like the plague, I might even go for this cute Cha Cha Ruffle Bikini Top!  How adorable are these ruffles??

Albion 4

Albion did send me some of their product to sample, and since I was too frightened of what I might look like in a bathing suit- I chose fitness clothes instead.  I got this cute tennis/running Match Point Pleat Skirt in black, and I must say that it’s awfully cute and flattering.  I just love the little ruffles that flit around as I walk.

Have you ever hired a professional photographer?  For your wedding… for your babies… family photos?  Would you fall off your chair if I tell you that I haven’t?!  A family friend shot our wedding, and we’ve always just taken our own photos of kids, family, etc.  Isn’t that bizarre?  I guess I’ve not been willing to bite the bullet and pay to hire anyone all of these years.  It was time though.  Our family needed some photos and so did RecipeGirl… so we investigated who was the best around and hired a fabulous San Diego Photographer– Amy Boring of A Boring Photo.  Thought I’d share some of the images she took of us, just in case you might be looking for a Southern California photographer too!

I gave Amy the task of capturing my relationship with my son Brooks (RecipeBoy).  We drove down a country road and she pointed to a spot in the middle of trees, overgrown grasses and leaves. I’d have never stopped there in a million years to take pictures.  But she knew it would be perfect for a photo shoot.

There are a whole lotta gift recommendation posts out there.  I love them all.  I thought I’d give you some ideas that were a little out of the ordinary.  Stuff you might not think of, but you may wish to gift to someone in your circle of friends or family.  Here ya go… my favorite gift ideas for 2012:

I’m in love with these Baby Bloomers.  Such a sweet idea. ($19.31)

This is an Alex I Can Cook toy.  Yum yum, every day is spaghetti day! Fill and spill a soft pot with pasta and vegetables. Squeak the carrot, rattle the radish and jingle the tomato. ($16.72)

My 3 year old nephew is getting this Reversible Superhero Cape this year.  It comes with a mask too.  My son would have gone nuts of this! ($30.00)

And my 5 year old niece is getting this: Pretend & Play School.  I was a teacher for 12 years, and I know how much kids like to pretend to be the teacher.  The box says ages 3+, but I’m thinking this is best for 5+.  There’s a moveable clock, a map, fill-in-your-own calendar, pointer, eraser, hall passes, awards, worksheets, bell, stickers, report cards, etc.  So cute. ($26.27)

I’m saving Magformers for a 5/6 year old gift idea.  Kids can use the magnetic shapes to create imaginative and creative structures. ($37.30)

I think these Carpet Skates are fun for people who live in shivering, snowy/rainy climates.  Kids can get a little exercise by skating around on your carpet! ($19.57)

I thought of the iHome Speaker for a teenager, but my husband has one too and uses it quite often!  It just plugs into your iPhone, iPod, iTouch or whatever i-device you have and you’ve got an instant mini-speaker to play your iTunes! ($17.58)

And then I saw these ADORABLE iPhone covers for the iPhone 4 on Etsy.  Ice cream sandwiches,  Spam, Peeps, Cracker Jacks, Matzah, etc.  ($17.99)

Slippers for the Baseball Lover in your life (choose your team @ $13.99) or slippers for the Zombie-crazed person in your life too ($19.99)

A brand-new biography of Bruce Springsteen has just been published ($15.86), so if you know anyone who is as obsessed with The Boss as my husband is, they might enjoy it!  And OF COURSE, I’m suggesting that you begin watching Homeland (Showtime) because it is *absolutely* the best show on television.  If you haven’t seen it, you simply must.  I feel like I’m watching a really good movie every time a new episode is on.  It would make a great gift. ($34.96)

My sister bought me a Magnabilities Necklace for my birthday, and I TOTALLY LOVE IT!  The decorative magnets are inserts, so you can constantly change the look of your necklace.  You can get them in all shapes ($18 to $25)- on different kinds of cords or chains ($6 to $22), and then you can choose from zillions of magnetic inserts from all kinds of themes ($5).

Phew.  That’s it… those are my picks.  See anything you like?

Disclosure:  There are some Amazon affiliate links included in this post.  If you click through and purchase through one of the links, it makes me (literally) a few pennies that help pay for things like great giveaways on RecipeGirl.com!  I received no free products in the writing of this post.  These are just some cute things I’ve come across that I wanted to share with you!
