I am happy to say that at this point we already have 37 people registered
for this free event. The room that Lynn lined up for us at Brown University
seats up to 200 people, so keep the registrations coming! To go directly to the
webpage to register for the event, please click on http://www.neurisa.org/events?eventId=479374&EventViewMode=EventRegistration.
To first learn more about the event, click on http://www.neurisa.org/events. We
really hope to see you there!

Thanks again to the 12 speakers who agreed to share their work, Brown
University for hosting, NEURISA for handling registration, Applied Geographics
and Mapping & Planning Services for providing us with break refreshments,
and New England GeoSystems for live streaming the event... that's right... live
streaming.

New England GeoSystems will be testing free Live streaming services
provided by UStream.com for Ignite Spatial Providence. If you are not able to
attend and would like to participate remotely, please send an e-mail to Marwin@ne-geo.com before the 6th of May with
no text in the body of the email and the subject “Streaming”. Connections will
be limited to the first 50 people. You will receive an email the day of the
event with a link to view the live stream. Be aware that these services are
free and are subject to advertisements. No organization involved in this
event endorses any of the advertisements that you will be presented with. We
have never used this service before, so there are no guarantees that it will
work! If everything goes without a hitch, we will also be able to post a video
after the event on our websites.

Again, let your geospatially-oriented friends know about this fun
event.

Ignite Spatial Providence - May 7 - Free Registration Now Open

Just a couple of updates as these events draw closer...

RIGIS Fair at the State House on Wednesday, April 25th at 3:00pm:

Everything is falling into place nicely with this event thanks to the
volunteer efforts of many of you in the RIGIS community. If you are in the
neighborhood, please plan on stopping by to check out demonstrations by your
peers on 5 diverse uses of GIS in Rhode Island. If you know a Rhode
Island Senator or Representative (or someone who works with or for of them),
please forward them this email to let them know about this event happening while
they are in session.

Ignite Spatial Providence at Brown University in Providence on Monday, May
7th at 4:30pm:

We have made great strides in setting up this event, and planning is almost
complete. At this point, we have a registration site set up thanks to one of
our sponsors (NEURISA). Please click on http://www.neurisa.org/events to
register for the event. This registration website will be constantly updated as
we receive more information. Upcoming information will include a more detailed
agenda with speaker names and presentation titles, and a website that we are
working on setting up to allow those who cannot make the presentation to view a
live streaming version of it online.

New Detailed Statewide Elevation Data Now Provisionally Available From RIGIS

Originally collected in Spring 2011, and now available on a provisional basis from RIGIS, are partially classified point cloud data (LAS 1.2 file format), a 1-m resolution bare earth digital elevation model (ERDAS IMG format), metadata, and two supporting shapefiles (the original tile layout plus the hydrographic breaklines that were used to build the DEM). These data may all be accessed via the "Elevation and Derived Products" data download area at the RIGIS online data clearinghouse. (direct link).

This data collection was a component of the larger Northeast LiDAR Project. This multi-state regional initiative was primarily funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and was lead by the Maine Office of GIS, facilitated by the USGS Geospatial Liaison Network, and managed by the USGS National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. Locally, this project was coordinated by RIGIS and the URI Environmental Data Center. More details about these data and this provisional release are available from this collection's download area on the RIGIS website.

Ignite Spatial Providence - Call For Speakers

It is time to start rounding up a dozen speakers for the first-ever Ignite Spatial event for Rhode Island. Lynn Carlson has offered to host this event and has reserved a large lecture hall at Brown University for late afternoon (4:30-7:00pm) on Monday, May 7th. I have attended one of these events (in Cambridge, MA) and have spoken at another one (in Hartford, CT). I can tell you from first-hand experience, that these events are a blast!

As a speaker, it is far from the traditional speaking gig. The rules are simple, yet strict. Each speaker presents 20 slides on a geospatial-related topic of their choice. Here's where it differs... instead of being able to advance slides at your own pace, they automatically advance every 15-seconds! This means that every speaker has only 5 minutes to get their point across. Think of it as "short attention span theater" for GIS folks.

As a viewer, it can be either fun or challenging, but is never boring. If a speaker picks a very interesting/off-beat topic, with slides that are heavier on pictures and lighter on text, the time seems to fly and the speaker's overall message is well-grasped. If the speaker tries to shoehorn slides from a traditional 20-45 minute talk into this format, the result is brain-overload for the viewer while the speaker gets "run over" by their own presentation as slides continuously advance.

So... please send an email to shane.white@doa.ri.gov with an interesting/timely topic you would like to talk about to your fellow RIGIS members. If you know of someone who you think would do a great job with this format and has something cool to show, please immediately either forward them a link to this blog post, or send me an email with their contact information.

Did I mention that all speakers will be strongly urged to reconvene at the nearby pub for happy-hour follow-up discussions with viewers? As a speaker, this will allow you to meet up with people who share an interest in your topic. Who knows... you may learn something from them about alternative ways to approach and/or apply your thoughts!

Updated Groundwater Data Now Available from RIGIS

An updated Groundwater Quality Standard dataset, as well as Community and Non-Community Wellhead Protection Areas datasets, are now available from RIGIS. They may be found under the Inland Water Resources data download area.

Two upcoming RIGIS events: Save the Date for April 25th and May 7th

Hello everyone. I am very excited to announce that we have nailed down dates for two new types of GIS events in Rhode Island.

The first event is a "RIGIS Fair at the Rhode Island State House" from 3:00-5:30pm on Wednesday, April 25th. The goal of this event is for RI legislators to become more familiar with RIGIS, including its members, database, website, and applications. A total of four tables will be set up in the short hallways outside of each chamber for passers-by to take a look at project posters, view demonstrations and talk with members of RIGIS about how GIS may be used to help solve various issues. Topics presented will be pertinent to issues that legislators deal with on a regular basis.

The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

The second event is "Ignite Spatial Providence" sponsored by the New England Chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (NEURISA) and RIGIS. This first ever Ignite Spatial event in Rhode Island will be held at Brown University in Providence on Monday, May 7th from 4:30 - 7:00pm.

If you are not familiar with Ignite events, they are held in a speed presentation format where each speaker has 5 minutes to present 20 slides (15 seconds each) with automatic forwarding of slides. The result is a very highly entertaining afternoon for attendees and a fun and challenging situation for the presenters!

It will be up to each presenter to put their own entertaining spin on a geospatial subject. After this event, the evening continues at a nearby pub as all presenters will be urged to join us for follow-up questions by attendees.

Here's the event agenda:

4:30 - Free On-site Registration & Networking
5:00 - Introductions
5:15 - First 5-6 presentations
5:45 - BREAK (hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages sponsored by Applied Geographics, and Mapping and Planning Services)
6:15 - Last 5-6 presentations
6:45 - Wrap-up & Discussion
7:00 - Adjourn to the English Cellar Alehouse (165 Angell Street)

For more information about...

...
There are over 200 attribute fields within this dataset - be sure to take advantage of your GIS software search tools and/or your browser's search function to quickly located attribute definitions within the metadata that may be of interest to you.

The remaining census datasets within the "Cultural, Society, and Demography" download area have also had their titles updated in order to consolidate them into one logical group, making it easier to quickly skim through the data listing for this category.

Sample LiDAR Data Now Available From RIGIS

A major statewide airborne LiDAR data collection and processing project is underway on behalf of Rhode Island! More details about RI's portion of the Northeast LiDAR Project and sample datasets are now available from RIGIS - look for the heading "LiDAR: USGS 2011" within the Elevation data download area (or just use this direct link).
It consists of multispectral (4-band), 6-inch spatial resolution orthorectified digital aerial photographs that were collected April 29 - May 2, 2011. These images were contracted by a partnership consisting of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Rhode Island Department of Transportation, United States Geological Survey, and RIGIS.

Not only are these orthophotographs available in JPEG2000 and GeoTiff formats as traditional file downloads, but RIGIS has teamed with the University of Rhode Island Environmental Data Center to also make these images available via a series of online map and image services.
Planning Challenge Grants are administered by the Statewide Planning Program and funded with Federal Highway Administration Metropolitan Planning funds received by the State of Rhode Island and allocated to the Statewide Planning Program in its role as staff to State Planning Council, the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for Rhode Island. The purpose of the grant program is to provide funding for statewide, regional and local planning studies leading to the implementation of the State Guide Plan, particularly Land Use 2025 and Transportation 2030.

The State Guide Plan is Rhode Island’s long-range planning document. It comprises many separately published elements covering a range of topics including transportation, land use, outdoor recreation, water supply and historic preservation. Two of the most recently updated elements are Land Use 2025 (2006) and Transportation 2030 (2008). These elements envision a Rhode Island with walkable, mixed-use growth centers complimented by a first class transportation infrastructure and a connected greenspace network.

In addition, projects that specifically address improving the quality or increasing the availability of affordable homes may be eligible for additional funding under Rhode Island Housing’s Targeted Assistance Grant Program. This additional grant award, not to exceed $10,000, may be used to satisfy the match requirement outlined above.

Applications for funding will be accepted on a competitive basis within the limits of available funds. The submission deadline is November 10, 2011. The Request for Proposals and Frequently Asked Questions sheet can be found at http://www.planning.state.ri.us/misc/pcgrants.htm.

I hope that you are enjoying summer.

Just a quick note to remind you to mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 2nd from 1-4pm for the next RIGIS User Group meeting. In an effort to rotate the location around the state, this quarter's meeting will be held in Cumberland (more location details coming soon). With a busy summer full of people taking time off to enjoy themselves, I need some help lining up speakers for this meeting.

If you have something that you are working on that you would like to show off to your GIS colleagues in RI, please let me know (shane.white@doa.ri.gov). It doesn't have to be a new or unique concept... the biggest benefit from giving a presentation is to tell people what you are doing, in as much detail as time allows, and find out who in the audience is doing something similar so that everyone can learn from each other's experience and/or research on the topic.

If you have a topic that you are considering, please email/call me to discuss it. I would be happy to talk with you about how to best present it.

If you have a topic that you would like some else to talk about, please let me know. If you know someone who would be a good speaker on the topic... better yet.

If you have a subject pretty much nailed down and know how you want to present it, please send me a very brief email with the following info:

- Title

- Short Description (no more than 10 words)

- How much time you would like (30-45 minutes)

To get the brainstorming going, here are some potential topics:

- ArcGIS v10.1 Debrief from the 2011 Esri User's Conference (home version, new LiDAR tools, etc.)

- Integrating crowdsourced information with GIS workflows (maybe a result of someone's research into this)

- Using free ArcGIS Online map services developed by URI for RIGIS (Greg, can you do this for us?)

- Broadband Mapping efforts in RI (project status, online resources, future direction)

I look forward to seeing your emails. The DFIRM database consists of a compilation of datasets, tables, and documentation. For more information about the individual assets contained within a DFIRM database, please be sure to review the documentation that is packaged with each database. Another nice resource is FEMA's "Guidelines and Specifications for Flood Hazard Mapping Partners" which explains the various elements of a DFIRM database in greater detail, as well as this FEMA Digital Flood Mapping Products summary web page.

NEURISA Day 2011 Call for Presentations - Now Open
