Steven Klein, Hiding Behind the Camera—NY Times

Photographer and RISD alumnus Steven Klein was featured in the New York Times' Thursday Styles section.

Mr. Klein has in fact been expressing that vision for decades. He first took up a camera at the Rhode Island School of Design, where as an art student in the mid 1970s, he began exploring his disturbingly violent, erotically charged and, some would say, unholy themes. His reputation rests in part on preternaturally polished images that owe a debt to Helmut Newton, whose models were often trussed in prostheses, as animated as blowup dolls. Mr. Klein’s celebrity portraits are sexier in a waxy sort of way.

RISD XYZ FALL/WINTER 2011/12

Have you received your copy of RISD XYZ in the mail yet? If not you might check to be sure your address is correct. You can also view and download every issue of XYZ on the RISD Alumni website.

Here is a rundown of what's in this issue.

FEATURES

Drawing Inspiration
Author/illustrators David Wiesner 78 IL, Brian Selznick 88 IL and Jarrett Krosoczka 99 IL have distinctly unique sensibilities, yet are essentially interested in the same thing: captivating their audiences through amazing visual storytelling.

From Crap to Queer, Teens Read with Zest
A lifelong love of books led Hallie Warshaw 89 GD to start a business that fills a perfect niche in the publishing industry.

Books in Translation
In light of the digitization of entire libraries, Ben Shaykin MFA 11 GD has been exploring the ramifications of our changing relationship to books.

DEPARTMENTS

Conversations
online, incoming, ongoing

Listen
featuring an illustrated commentary by Julia Rothman 02 IL about why she particularly loves several selected books by her RISD classmates

Look
at books and book arts

Six Degrees
updates from clubs, the Alumni Association and Alumni Relations, plus a new RISD Sweethearts story and a photo essay about RISD by Design 2011

Two College Street
Maeda’s message, a glimpse of studios/student life now, faculty news, plus a guest faculty column by Professor Robert Brinkerhoff

Impact
news about scholarships, donors, the RISD Annual Fund

Where We Are
class notes and profiles, undergraduate first, graduate second

Where We Were
celebrating RISD’s Portfolio yearbook tradition

Sketchbook
featuring pages from one of the very 3D books Christian DeFilippo 76 TX makes to experiment with new ideas

You can view and download every issue of XYZ on the RISD Alumni website.

Tonight: The Fusion of Fine Art and Fashion

The Fusion of Fine Art and Fashion

Wednesday, November 16th from 7:00 - 9:30 pm. Complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Art and Fashion have always been inextricably linked. This discussion will focus on the newest incarnations of that concept. Not only has there been a reciprocal influence in the worlds of art and fashion, but in the last decade, a more direct link has emerged—collaborations. Artists and designers have crossed genres, at a meeting of two creative forces, and in essence, developed a hybrid art form.

How does an artist break into the fashion world? By what methods should a designer decide to work with an established or upcoming artist? How has the retail landscape and reproducible nature of fashion items affected this partnership, and how in turn is the fashion market being influenced by art? These and many more questions will be addressed as Annika Connor leads the discussion exploring the Fusion of Fine Art and Fashion.

Featured Panelists:

Patrick McMullan: Photographer and founder of Patrick McMullan Company

Austin Scarlett: Fashion Designer & Project Runway Star

Bill Indursky: co-founder of VandM.com

More info and tickets at: https://artfashion.eventbrite.com/?nomo=1

Over its 2-year grant cycle, Building Strong Community Networks aims to help Heart of Brooklyn and its community partners develop a new "collaborative muscle" to strengthen cultural partnerships and tie them more strongly to the communities they serve. The initiative includes an assessment of each HOB partner’s nonfinancial assets and community connections, an analysis of the programming processes used by each organization, and the design and implementation of a new collaborative approach to community listening and programmatic responsiveness. The process will yield several reports for national dissemination.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

* Liaise and facilitate information-sharing among member organizations as well as members of the larger cultural community

* Schedule all convenings and stakeholder discussions

* Grants administration throughout the life cycle of the grant (ensuring compliance with federal and organizational guidelines, administration of contracts, monitoring timelines, financial reporting, etc.)

* Coordinate/support all project communication including email distribution, blog, web pages and social media, in collaboration with HOB Director and Communications Manager and with project partners

* Assist with preparation and delivery of reports and meeting materials

* Provide general support to HOB Director and member institutions, including scheduling meetings, drafting documents, gathering information, and answering inquiries

* Perform any other project related duties as directed

* Depending on the skill set of the successful candidate, the Project Coordinator may be assigned to assist with specific research tasks, such as conducting focus group discussions, or researching collaborative programming initiatives around the world.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred). Background in non-profit arts and culture organizations, community engagement and public administration/policy/planning or related field.

Preferred Skills

* Excellent oral and written communications; strong presentation skills; detail-oriented

* Ability to coordinate and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders

* Project management in related field a plus

* Qualitative research skills, including internet research

* Knowledge of the borough of Brooklyn

* Computer skills, including social networking platforms (such as Google Groups, Facebook Pages, Twitter and YouTube). Familiarity with Mac applications, Salesforce, and WYSIWYG web publishing interface a plus

* Strong interpersonal/customer service skills

* Ability to work independently & multi-task

Application Process

To apply, please submit a cover letter, 1-2 page writing sample, resume and two references. Email documents, in PDF format, to jobs@heartofbrooklyn.org. Use the subject line: “Project Coordinator.” Only those candidates who are being considered will be contacted. No phone inquiries please.

Heart of Brooklyn is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE). Qualified applicants are considered for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.

About Heart of Brooklyn
