Dr. Brenda Greene and writer, social justice activist and attorney Khary Lazarre-White discuss Passage, Seven Stories Press, 2017. Greene and Lazarre-White discuss the themes in this coming of age novel and Lazarre-White's work with The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a youth organization which he co-founded in 1995. Brotherhood/Sister Sol provides comprehensive programming on issues such as leadership, educational achievement, social justice and politics. Passage is the story of Warrior, a young Black man growing up in urban New York City. Warrior is an old soul carrying the memories of his ancestors and surrounded by a loving mother, father and sister. His journey addresses the spiritual, emotional and social needs of Warrior. Although the novel takes place in the 1990s, it also reflects the challenges facing young Black men today.

In the wake of Charlottesville communities across the nation are reevaluating memorials and the history that they represent. On the occasion of the Center's fifth Anniversary, the CSSJ will be organizing the conference: Race, Memory and Memorialization. This conference will examine the activism behind the Southern Freedom Movement and critically question the way the Civil Rights Movement has been represented through memorials and exhibitions. The conference will pose questions about the commemoration, history and memory in the present.

With In Pursuit of Freedom digital curriculum and Dr. Zinga Fraser, director of the Shirley Chisholm Project.

On this historic Election Day, we will explore the role of women in politics in Brooklyn and beyond, and provide resources for bringing this important history into your classroom. We’ll consider political involvement broadly, from Shirley Chisholm’s congressional service and presidential campaign to Mary White Ovington and the NAACP to Maritcha Lyons’ influence in 19th century education for students of color. We’ll also mine BHS’s archives for opportunities to find women’s political contributions in primary sources that will broaden your students’ concept of American history.

The workshop is open to all NYC teachers, with primary source material best suited to grades 4 and up.

Fee includes breakfast & lunch.

Dana Edell, Ph.D, Executive Director, SPARK Movement (’98): At SPARK Movement, an intergenerational girls’ activist organization, Dana collaborates with girls to launch successful action campaigns including a media campaign that led to Seventeen Magazine’s public promise to never Photoshop girl models and to commit to race and body size diversity in their pages. She trains and supports girls (ages 13-22) to take action, produce theater, create videos and write blogs. Dana was co-chair of the Girls’ Participation Task Force at the United Nations and she teaches Theatre and Activism at New York University and the City University of New York.

Amy Kantrowitz, COO, Free Arts NYC (MA’92): Amy has two decades of nonprofit experience and currently serves as COO of Free Arts NYC, an arts education nonprofit that provides underserved children with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs. Amy has worked with some of NYC’s leading education and youth development organizations, including New Visions for Public Schools, and The After-School Corporation - this path emerged directly from her Brown MAT, work with Professor Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, and VISTA year at the Swearer Center for Public Service.

Josh Landay, Director, Eye to Eye Diplomats (’02): Josh is a professional actor, teaching artist, and non-profit program director. He serves as Director of the speakers bureau of Eye to Eye, a national nonprofit organization for students with learning disabilities. Since launching the Diplomats program in 2011, Mr. Landay has developed and coordinated over 250 public engagement presentations, including events at the White House and the U.S. Department of Education. He has also performed in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway as well as in the West End, Las Vegas, and the first national tour.

Khary Lazarre-White, Executive Director & Co-Founder, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (’95): Khary is a social entrepreneur, educator, non-profit executive, writer and attorney. In 1995 he co-founded The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a nationally renowned, comprehensive youth development and educational organization that provides rites of passage programming, after school care, counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation and scholarships, employment opportunities, community organizing training, legal representation, and month long international study programs to Africa and Latin America. Khary has extensive experience as a public speaker across the country, writes regular opinion pieces for The Huffington Post, and essays for publications that have included NYU Press, Nation Books, and MSNBC.com.

Carlos Lejnieks, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties (’00): Lejnieks took over an atrophied Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in 2008 and, within four years, went from serving approximately 100 youth to serving well over 1,100. Under his leadership, BBBS has received numerous awards from local, state and national entities, including a formal recognition by President Obama. Lejnieks has served on President Barack Obama’s Regional Finance Committee, Governor Chris Christie’s Education Transition Team and Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s Transition Team. In 2016, he was the NY Yankees “Civic Leader Spotlight”.

Shalinee Sharma, Executive Director & Board Member, Zearn (’98): Zearn Math was created to fix math education for all kids. It offers an internationally-normed, rigorous curriculum that combines personalized digital lessons with daily targeted small group instruction so that every teacher can reach every student, every day.

Uptown Bounce: The Finale Wednesday, August 17, 6:00 - 9:00 pm El Museo del Barrio and MCNY Exhibit and Block Party Join the Museum of the City of New York and El Museo del Barrio for our third annual Uptown Bounce series of summer block parties! On four consecutive Wednesday evenings, sample distinctive New York DJs with music and dancing (including dance lessons), and enjoy gallery talks and tours, art workshops, summer drinks, and local food.

A private talk with the Artist in Residence Ayana Evans at 6:00pm. Ayana Evans is a NYC based artist. Her work consists of performance (often relational) arts practices that examine experiences and presumed knowledge that are lived through her body. Evans's recent performances include: "Operation Catsuit" and "I Just Came Here to Find a Husband," which are two on-going public interventions.

Early Conference Experience in Geosciences (ECE GeoSci): An opportunity for High School students to attend a national forum at CCNY

We invite students from the 5 boroughs of NYC, who are entering their junior or senior year of high school, to attend the NOAA/EPP/MSI 8^th Biennial Science and Education Forum at The City College of the City University of New York (CCNY). The ECE GeoSci events aim is to encourage students from underrepresented communities to pursue degrees in ocean, atmospheric, and geological sciences.

Students will attend the one-day ECE GeoSci event on Monday 29^th, August 2016 from 7:30am to 5:00pm, at no cost to the selected students. Participants will be paired with a graduate student mentor for the day. Pairings will be based on the expressed interests written within the online application. Together participants and their mentors will attend scientific lectures covering a range of topics in the geosciences. During special breakout sessions participants will learn about the process of transitioning from high school to college, explore career opportunities, and engage in dialogue with scientific professionals.

Extra Program Details

·       Online application, recommendation letter, waivers and liability forms must be submitted by 5:00pm on July 29th.

Kamoinge, a pioneering photographic collective, was formed in New York in over 50 years ago to address the under-representation of black photographers in the art world. Kamoinge’s body of work spans the past 50 and included numerous images of daily life in black America in New York City during the last half of the twentieth century.

This panel is part of Columbia University’s Institute for Research in African-American Studies (IRAAS) 2016 Summer Teachers and Scholars Institute (STSI), entitled “The Many Worlds of Black New York.” This portion of the STSI is free and open to the public. Mission:

Founded in 1995, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-two. Bro/Sis offers wrap around evidence-based programming. The organization focuses on issues such as leadership development and educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan-African and Latino history, and global awareness. Bro/Sis provides four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training and employment, college preparation, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa and Latin America.

We are locally based, with a national reach, as Bro/Sis publishes assorted curricula and collections of our members’ writings; trains educators from throughout the nation on our approach; and our leadership is invited to speak and present at educational and policy convenings and conferences across the country.

Our theory of change is to provide multi-layered support, guidance, education and love to our membership, to teach them to have self-discipline and form order in their lives, and then to offer opportunities and access so that they may develop agency.

Andrea also serves as a Trustee on the Tau Omega Charitable Trust Fund, Incorporated's Board.

Arva Rice - President & CEO of the New York Urban League (NYUL) an organization whose mission is to enable African Americans and other underserved communities to secure a first class education, economic self-reliance and equal respect of their civil rights through programs, services and advocacy. Prior to joining NYUL, she served as the Executive Director of Project Enterprise, an organization that provides business loans, technical assistance and peer support to New York City entrepreneurs.
