Republic Polytechnic (RP), the tertiary institution that approaches learning with a difference, achieved a Singapore Book of Records listing for the largest mosaic ever made from plastic bottles in the republic. About 2000 RP students and staff joined more than 2000 participants from 20 secondary schools to collect and construct the giant mosaic using 106,060 plastic bottles from a total of 133,326 collected. The mosaic, which covers an area roughly the size of five-and-a-half badminton courts at RP’s Sports Complex building in Woodlands, aims to draw public attention to the need for energy conservation and recycling.

The event, held as part of pre-publicity efforts for World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour programme, which will take place on the evening of 28 March 2009, was graced by Guest of Honour Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Mayor, South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. Mayor Khor completed the giant mosaic when she and representatives from RP and the secondary schools simultaneously placed the last bottles in position.

Republic Polytechnic and 2,000 participants from 20 secondary schools achieved a Singapore Book of Records listing for the largest mosaic ever made from 106,060 collected plastic bottles.
The mosaic, which covers an area roughly the size of five-and-a-half badminton courts at RP’s Sports Complex building in Woodlands, aims to draw public attention to the need for energy conservation and recycling.
The event, held as part of pre-publicity efforts for World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour programme on 28 March 2009, was graced by Guest of Honour Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Mayor, South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
Mayor Khor completed the giant mosaic when she and representatives from RP and the secondary schools simultaneously placed the last bottles in position.
The project is the brainchild of Soh Zhi Hao, Jasper and Choo Li Qi, Sabrina, both, third year students from the School of Applied Science and members of the Republic Polytechnic Conservation Interest Group.
“Republic Polytechnic's 100,000 plastic bottles challenge is a part of RP's efforts to engage the community around us to combat climate change and global warming together. If everyone contributes a little each, it will accumulate to make a huge difference,” said Mr. Soh.

Republic Poly constructs giant mosaic from plastic bottles

Republic Polytechnic has achieved a Singapore Book of Records listing for the largest mosaic ever made from plastic bottles here.

About 4,000 people had constructed the mosaic using over 106,000 plastic bottles.

The mosaic covers an area roughly the size of five-and-a-half badminton courts.

The effort was part of pre-publicity efforts for the World Wide Fund for Nature's Earth Hour programme tomorrow.

The aim's to draw public attention to the need for energy conservation and recycling.

So after the mosaic is dismantled after Earth Hour, Republic Poly will be disposing of the bottles in an environment-friendly manner.

It'll be carted away by a recycling contractor to be reduced to flakes.

These flakes will then be processed into yarn, which can be woven and made into clothes.

At the same time, we managed to clinch the Singapore Book Of Records for this feat. The total number of plastic bottles inside the mosaic is 106,060, which the number coincides with the Earth Hour ‘60’.

-With the key objective of recycling waste material and encouraging a reduction of use of plastic bottles, this event aims to raise and strengthen the awareness of the importance of recycling and also to encourage a reduction of use of plastic bottles amongst secondary school students.

Collection Time and Dates

The collection schedule is as follows:

a. 11 February 2009 (Wednesday), between 2-6pm*

b. 25 February 2009 (Wednesday), between 2-6pm*

c.11 March 2009 (Wednesday), between 2-6pm*

d. 18 March 2009 (Wednesday), between 2-6pm*

*Kindly note that approximate collection timings are subjected to number of collection venues and the distance between the venues. In the event of any delay, we will inform the staff-in-charge the soonest possible. We thank you for your kind understanding on this arrangement

Please also note :

The collection of plastic bottles from the school will only take place if the school meets the minimum of 2,000 plastic bottles by any of the collection dates stated below. However, on the last collection date (18 March 2009), we will collect all the remaining bottles from all the schools, even if the school does not meet the 2000 bottles requirement.

Important information on collection procedure

1. We will give the teacher in charge a telephone call five working days (on 4 Feb, 18 Feb, 4 Mar and 11 Mar between 130pm-5pm) before the scheduled collection dates to confirm the following:

a. If the school requires RP to do the collection on the collection date (minimum of 2,000 plastic bottles)

b. To inform the approximate time of collection on the collection date.

2. In the event that you do not hear from us regarding collection date/time, please feel free to contact the logistics team at 91616613 (HP). Kindly note that this number is for the facilitation of bottles collection only.

Republic Polytechnic’s 100,000 Plastic Bottles Challenge!

Rules and Regulations

1.Registration for the competition closes on 30 January 2009 (Friday), 12pm.

2.Any type of plastic bottles is allowed.

3.All plastic bottles must be washed and cleaned with caps attached (if possible). Please take note that dirty bottles will not be counted or collected.

4.Participating schools are advised to pack their collection in 100 bottles per bundle.

5.Participating schools are to provide their own collection containers. Environmentally friendly collection ideas are encouraged. For example, instead of using plastic trash bags, schools might want to consider using used card board boxes, recycling bins or rubbish bins that are not being used.

6.The collection of plastic bottles from the school will only take place if the school meets the minimum of 2,000 plastic bottles by any of the collection dates stated below. However, on the last collection date (18 March 2009), we will collect all the remaining bottles from all the schools, even if the school does not meet the 2000 bottles requirement.

7.Participating schools are to assign 2 to 3 students helpers/manpower to assist with the loading of the plastic bottles onto the lorry on the collection dates.

8.Schools are not allowed to combine their plastic bottles collection with other schools. Each school’s contribution will be counted individually.

9.After every collection, we will update the website www.100000plasticbottles.blogspot.com/ with the names of the top ten schools with the highest number of bottles following the collection dates.

10.The competition ends on 18 March 2009 (Wednesday). The results of the competition will be posted on the website and announced by via e-mail at the end of March/early April 2009.
