Monkdate: Both of my Pandaren Monks, Shanjo (H) and Shânjo (A) are coming along ok thus far. For this installment, I wanted to share some more ideas and observations to help with Pandaren role-playing with the cross-faction approach using the game mechanics to your advantage.

Note: The great thing about the Pandaren (and I’ve mentioned this before) is the Cross-Faction possibilities. So, it doesn’t really matter what class you pick. The key is keeping both as close as possible as you level up. Here’s some things I did to help myself get situated:

The Setup

I really try to keep things as simple as possible. So, here’s an overview of how I work this concept. After making my versions of Shanjo and going through the introductions to both Alliance and Horde, I set up my RP flagging addon of choice. This is entirely optional, but can maybe help immerse you into character.

Tip: You can also “switch” any Unicode characters using this, at least for those who use compatible addons. So… Shânjo can be seen (in theory) as Shanjo.

2) Sync up Ability Bars. I took a look at my ability bar. I took the layout of my Alliance version and duplicated it to my Horde. Sure, there may be some abilities that shift over time – but the “core” abilities I tried to keep the same. This helps to ground your Alliance and Horde counterparts. You’ll want to follow through on this idea as you level up and gain new abilities. You can also use additional bars that can be found in your Interface settings to help keep things straight. I even did that down to the macros I had setup for emotes and related RP stuff.

Tip: Screenshots can help you as a guide and try to manage the same for your dual specs when they come around.

Syncing Ideas

1) Quest/Level up in the same zones. Yes, it can get monotonous, but it’s kinda neat at the same time. It also can help you pick and choose your path through leveling both versions of your character, since you “both” have a “history” there if you integrate that into your role-playing. Feel free to adapt this how you wish – nothing’s written in stone.

Tip: The main thing is to do what works for your playstyle.

2) Working on the wardrobe. If/when you are able, keep the gear as similar as possible, especially if you are really active into playing both versions of yourself. As you notice, there’s nothing really awesome about the low level gear, especially if you are wearing leather. Just make do and endure the “clown suit”, but look for pieces that can be good RP wear as you go. Did you save your starter gear from the Wandering Isle? Points to you if you did! But if you didn’t it’s ok. Just do what you can with what you got.

Note to Blizzard: Think about some more Pandaren-looking stuff for lowbies. Thanks! Bonus if we get lowbie plain straw hats!

I really was wanting to have some Pandaren-looking clothing for RP moments, so I researched what the Pandaren actually wore in a “normal” setting. I hopped over the Pandaria to check the “runways”.

This was kind of what I was looking for… but I have not seen much in this style, other than the starter gear you may get on The Wandering Isle. So, I looked elsewhere on the continent. Here’s some examples of some of the outfits.

What I found was a diverse arrangement of outfits, some things “fit”, others would not be my first choice. But, what this means is that you can have a lot of freedom in the outfits for casual wear for Pandaren, since most of this is available in-game. I did find some outfits which might be of interest!

This is pretty much a no-brainer if you are looking for a stylish “Pandaren” look. These are very close (if not exact) to the robes/suits (in a few colors) you can get at the Lunar Festival. look for the Festive patterns and items for purchase over at Moonglade when the event kicks in. While in Moonglade, ladies can pick these up:

The classic Hanboks are also worn in Pandaria that you could only get in Moonglade long ago. You can also grab these from The Undercity and Stormwind now too!

I think Geenia still has the rare Hanboks as well, so keep checking for the Red Traditional Hanbok (right) and the Green Wedding Hanbok.

For Monks, or related Zen folk, I saw some ideas at the Shrine if the Ox:

One great thing is that there’s two identical/related sets in game as Common Cloth Armor – The Padded (middle) and Russet (right) Sets. The Padded is almost an exact copy of the picture on the left, taken from the Ox Temple. The belt and shoes are not exact, but the overall look is good. You can also get some Knitted Sandals too!

I also found these outfits:

While these trainees are wearing the Red Smoking Pit Set version, I found the Green, Black and part of a Sky version. If I find the rest of the “Sky” set, I’ll update!

Tip: Explore options and see what “fits” for you. Everyone has their own takes on fashion and costuming. Also! Don’t forget the Gray and White items and other quest rewards – you might find some nice RP pieces. Wowhead.com has a pretty good Transmog Set Database, which can help you find sets or pieces that may work together. Just filter options and see what you can find! Play around with combinations and see what fits for your “look”.

4) Be consistent while in character. Wrap your mind that this is the same character, not two different ones. Carry your character development and IC backstory between the “Blue” and “red” versions. Act as one!

To help keep things in order, I used my favorite Addon: TinyPad. You can use similar note-taking addons like NotesUNeed as well. The main thing is to have notes on demand for role-playing. It’s great for adding information as you go along and play.

Just for giggles! This is a nice thing to find! The Six Demon Bag! It’s a nice Big Trouble in Little China nod that Blizzard tossed in in Vanilla. David Lo Pan Style!

Next: We go over some RP tips for Pandaren!

As you can guess, there’s much to think about if you’re going to try this. The “Neutral” Pandaren, touching on [...]

As you can guess, there’s much to think about if you’re going to try this. The “Neutral” Pandaren, touching on Pandaren from Warcraft 3 – but for role-playing purposes in World of Warcraft: Mist of Pandaria. My Monk(s), “Shango” (Shanjo (Horde) and Shânjo (Alliance) versions, but one character ICly) left the Wandering Isle to see what lies beyond, similar to what Lui Lang (the first Pandaren Explorer) did many years ago.

OOCly, I ran them through each of the “Welcoming” quests into both the Alliance and Horde. Both Ji Firepaw and Aysa Cloudsinger head with you ICly or OOCly, depending on your concept/backstory. They both have good intent and really want to do “good” in their own way.

I’ll give it to you straight (in my humble opinion): Both sides were welcoming until you met the leaders. It then went downhill. As I mentioned before, the Pandaren folk are a simple people. Yes, they have seen conflict – but this time, it appears both Aysa and Ji have bit off more than they can chew.

Especially this part of both conversations:

See? You may have thought Varian was a jerk before, but Garrosh took jerk to a new level. But both are laying down the law on your decision to help and the relationships with your friends and family that may have came over to “help” as well. What your Pandaren may have thought he/she was getting into is now more complicated.

I also mentioned this earlier – being on “both” sides of this renewed conflict can be ICly “sensitive”. I would be aware (or not, ICly) to that issue. Your Pandaren could easily be considered a spy if the right ears or eyes follow your character. This doesn’t mean just the existing Horde and Alliance – even your friends on either side could have their suspicions if they are hardcore with their new “Allies”.

It really depends on your character, your role-playing and the RP “climate” in regards to the conflict. Just something to think about as you develop your backstory and role-playing around this concept.

That may be the reason being Neutral (As neutral as you can be, of course). The rules got changed, so maybe it’s time to change those rules.

More ideas and RP stuffs on this are on the way!

Based on my idea in Pandaren: Split Decisions, I finished my preparations. I created my Monks Shanjo (Horde) and Shânjo [...]

Based on my idea in Pandaren: Split Decisions, I finished my preparations. I created my Monks Shanjo (Horde) and Shânjo (Alliance), using the alt code â. I am hoping it will minimalize the sometimes aggravating alt code complications, while keeping the names 99.99% “linked” ICly.

I ran them both trough the Wandering Isle starting area. I will have to say the flavour and feel was well done overall. I’m going to touch on a few things you will find and maybe miss if you steamroll through the content.

The Tushui and the Huojin

I found these hanging scrolls in the Shang Xi Training area, inside the Temple. Just go inside and you will see one on each side of the door. This gives you some idea of what makes each Path tick.

Lui Lang

At some point you enter the Temple of the Five Dawns and come across the statue of Lui Lang. There is a placard at the base. This gives you some lore on Lui Lang, the first Pandaren explorer.

The Lorewalker Lesson

This is another awesome bit of flavour and lore to view as you adventure. Not far from the Temple of Five Dawns is The Dawning Span. You must pass through this bridge on your questline, so you’re not going to miss it. However, there’s Lorewalker Zan who will flag you down and tell you of a lesson just down the stairs. Lorewalker Amai gives the lesson while Lorewalker Roulin sings the Song of Lui Lang.

Lorewalker Lesson (via WowPedia): http://www.wowpedia.org/Dawning_Span#The_Song_of_Liu_Lang
Here’s the transcript of the lesson in case you miss it.

The Choice

At the end of your adventure, the questline leads to a choice of joining the Alliance or the Horde. That’s when the idea hit me to maybe have a third option: The Neutral Pandaren, putting the game mechanics to the test vs role-playing.

Most Pandaren are simple people, but with great heart and spirit. Lui Lang sought what was beyond, it would be Shanjo’s choice now to stay or go out into the world.

My option ICly was to ally with both Ji Firepaw and Aysa Cloudsinger, despite their different views – they were good Pandarens, wanting to help the outside world. The Alliance and the Horde at that point seemed like good people as well, even though there is this huge conflict. Shanjo, in the spirit of Lui Lang, will take a chance and see what lies beyond…

TIP: Keep your starter gear from the Wandering Isle! You may need it!

Next, some thoughts on the consequences of leaving home…

You know, sometimes I get stuck in a decision. Which can be ok to rather annoying. Pandaclysm (Mists of Pandaria) is no exception, if you’re playing a Pandaren. Without laying down the “Spoilhammer” – Your Pandaren at some point has to choose to go Horde or Alliance.

But I ask this: What if I don’t wanna?

You say to yourself… “Holy Neutrality, Alt-Man! How can that be done!”

“All will be revealed soon enough, Old Chum! – To the Alt-Mobile!”

The RP Concept
Pandaren start out Neutral in regards to Alliance/Horde. What if we want to stay Neutral ICly and help others and the world? While both sides bicker and fight amongst themselves – A Neutral Pandaren can hang out, adventure, help folks, sling some brewskis and do more or less what Pandaren canonly/not-so-canonly have done since Warcraft III.

The TLDR Solution
Since Pandaren can join either BOTH factions, why not make TWO identical Pandaren, keep them in sync and RP Neutral ICly on both sides. This is not a fullproof plan, but it’s a very, very cool one if you can pull it off!

Step 1 – Cloning Made Simple
Make TWO Pandaren on your RP server. Make them IDENTICAL.

Step 2 – Playing the Name Game
Note: You may need a RP Flagging Addon for name manipulation.

Without a Addon: you can make two names, and either use unicode/alt characters for one of the vowels. For best results, do not go nuts with this. Note: Note that this does make you character harder to send messages to, send mail to add as a friend, so make sure you want to go this route. Understanding that, it may be the better solution in case not many on your RP actually use an Name Flagging Addon.

With a Addon: You can control how your name appears with others that have a compatible Addon. Make one of the Pandaren the first name, the other the surname or middle name – whichever combo works best in your case. The trick is to use the Addon to make the name appear the same for both characters.

Another useful tip!: My friend Krelle from Earthen Ring (US) had this “pro tip”!:

Use a name with “m” and substitute “rn” on the other “you”. The “rn” blends a bit to look like “m”. Thanks Krelle!

Step 3 – Level Up!
Level both Pandaren and have one join Alliance and the other Horde. Then do your best to keep each Pandaren more or less sync’d as far as gear, level, etc.. This can be a chore depending on your playstyle, but the payoff can be worth it.

Step 4 – Bring The RP!
Now that you have in effect, a cross-faction Pandaren who can hang and RP on BOTH sides. He/She can be as Neutral as they need. So, your role-playing is more or less seamless between Horde and Alliance. Remember that this does not allow cross-faction communication. You will be stuck if you are in one faction “mode” and someone from the other faction appears.

Step 5 – The RP Possibilities
Pandaren Messengers, Merchants, International Pandaren of Mystery, Observers, Demi-Ambassadors, Adventurers, Entertainers, Mercenaries, “Heroes” For Hire… All kinds of RP can be developed and be had. Add some imagination, some role-playing and have fun!

Role-Playing Complications
Working “both sides of the fence” can be as mundane or as dangerous ICly as you make it. Expect possible IC friction, skepticism and other reactions – which can add a bit of intrigue to your RP. Just keep that in mind as you interact with others, especially with the conflicts between Horde and Alliance.

Note: This idea has and can be done similarly with same-faction RP using two alts. You can ICly have seemingly a multi-classed RP character, similar to old school D&D. Just something to think about. Just remember to make it work ICly, make it somehow fit into the lore, and make it fun to role-play.

As “Pandaclysm” aka Mists of Pandaria goes live, I was thinking of pulling together some ideas, thoughts and reference points together for RPers to (hopefully) help. There may be additions tagged to this later, but for now – here we go:

Blizzard’s MoP Introduction

For millennia, the continent of Pandaria has remained hidden, veiled from the rest of Azeroth behind a wall of impenetrable mists. Now the fog is lifting just as warships of the Horde and the Alliance clash off the coast of the lost continent.

As heroes from both factions venture onto Pandaria’s shores to explore its ancient forests and cloud-ringed mountaintops, they soon make contact with the mysterious denizens that dwell there… heralding the start of a new era of discovery and conflict for all of Azeroth.

Some Tips/Thoughts on Playing Pandaren

Amidst Chaos, focus on clarity. Starting out, it will most likely be a madhouse. If it’s really distracting, wait a while or until the craziness of launch subsides.

It’s the journey, not the destination. Take time to explore and take in the scenery, culture and lay of the land. This gives you some ideas concerning backstory and personality/mindsets in Pandaria. Listen to the race introduction and quests to get help get into your Pandaren’s head.

The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names. Research on some fitting RP names for your Pandaren can really help give you a RP boost. Check out resources at the end of this article and don’t forget to check out the Pandaren NPC’s. They can really inspire you to good names using the Chinese/Asian influences used in the Pandaren naming system. Also! Don’t forget you have access to Addons like TotalRP2, FlagRSP and related to give yourself first/last names.

Think both outside and inside the box. Explore character ideas and see what fits and what will RP well with others. You may want to do some research on old kungu-fu flicks, martial arts and similar genres. Take what you may like, adapt it to Mists and have fun with it.

The wise flow with water, but know when to cross. There are going to be culture gaps in Pandaren RP, so take influences from Chinese and other Asian cultures to fill in some of the blanks. Sometimes you have to wing it, but try to make sure things “fit” the situation and RP.

Time can be a valuable ally. There’s no rush to 90 or to RP. Take it at your own pace and don’t stress yourself out.

Seeking wisdom along your path. Remember there are some really helpful topics and information here on RP Made Simple. It’s here for you!

Center your RP “Chi”. Remember to have fun ICly and OOCly with others socially – that’s part of what we are all here for.

This article bears reposting from the old site, so here it is (with a few revisons): Enjoy!

You hear a lot of folks say there’s not enough RP going on. The talk of this or that server is “dying” due to lack of RP. You read it on your realm forums, the RP forums and in-game. The “Un-role-playing Rate” is up, and there’s “layoffs” in the RP Community.

Pretty much it’s kinda like a “RP Recession”, yes? …or is it?

Role-playing is a group social activity we do – whether it’s around a table slinging dice or in an mmorpg. Without others, there’s not much to do, right? That is where the “RP Stimulus Package” comes in – to help not only you but your RP Community as well. A collection of things to keep in mind and in perspective.

It also benefits in how we treat others too – being a social activity, it kinda goes hand in hand. In the end, we are all people and we roleplay to have fun.

Many role-players want a “RP Buffet” of sorts – most RP servers are not and cannot be hot and cold running role-play 24/7. Others still want events and role-playing, but really never look, spark or think about how they can add to the role-playing of their server.

Granted, some players do not have time – and that is understandable. Just do your best with the time and opportunity you have. There’s some neat ideas and thoughts ahead that might help.

With that in mind, here’s the RP Stimulus Package:

Be “fearless” (but don’t be a jerk) in public areas when roleplaying.

Role-play where you are and as you can.

Inspire/foster role-playing both in the game and out.

Be a good example when RPing. Role-players AND Non-roleplayers do notice. You never know!

Get into your realm’s RP Community. Who are the “RP Community” anyway? That’s YOU and your fellow RPers out there.

Be a positive influence in your RP Community when you can.

Help and attend events if you are able to. If you cannot go, spread the word!

Try to help keep the RP immersion of the realm when able.

Support efforts by others wishing to help others RP.

Be supportive of new roleplayers.

Be kind, respectful and helpful to other roleplayers in your RP community.

Be kind, respectful and helpful to non-roleplayers, you never know when one of them may want to try to RP.

Stay away from being elitist or egotistical in talking to other roleplayers. There is a difference between being knowledgeable and being a jerk.

Be in character, even if you think no one’s watching. You may be surprised who is.

Remember when you started out and give fellow roleplayers some slack before playing the “YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!” card.

Remember that it’s not just about YOU. Share the stage.

Make connections both ICly and OOCly. More connections = more potential RP opportunites.

Understand it is ok to make a mistake, we all do it at some point.

Be open to explaining or helping others learn about roleplaying. If you don’t know an answer, nicely point them to someone or a site that can help.

Think before we “judge” or be a jerk to other players.

Spread the word about sites, forums, events and people that can help the RP community. If you won’t tell someone, who will?

Be flexible in your role-playing, there will be times when you may have to retcon or fudge things.

Respect the way other people roleplay. There’s no perfectly RIGHT way.

Remember that just because you may not see role-playing, it doesn’t mean no one is doing it.

Remember that your realm’s population will ebb and flow during the year (holidays, school, summer vacations, etc.)

Remember that the pixels have people behind them. And feelings too.

Roleplay outward and inward. Be out in the field where you are and allow others to enter roleplaying if it’s possible – bring people into your RP when you can.

Before putting a condemned sign on your realm, see what you can do to help revive RP. You never know unless you look, and in some cases – try.

Look for the RP, don’t wait for it to find you.

Don’t see any RP, make it! Random RP can work.

No events on your realm? Start one! You never know.

Remember that RP starts where YOU are.

Never give up.

And yeah, this is not a definitive list by any means – but it’s a bunch of helpful ideas to help bear out the storm when times RP-wise look bleak.

Hope this helps!

Individual mileage may vary as some as the world and lore evolves. Sadly, this can always fall into the “lolore” category at any time.

I’ve also added the “King’s Calendar” to the most recent years. I think I got my calculations right. :)

Comments!
Comments are most welcome in this. If you do see a mistake – please comment and also give me an official source to make the changes as accurate as I can to help other role-players.

One of the things that can get static in-game are the same old skills, powers and abilities we have with a character or class. I was playing one of my alts and I thought, “Let’s spice this up a bit!”.

The basic concept was to take the “standard” abilities and give them a twist for both creative and immersion reasons. I thought it was worth a shot! :)

So, you have Briggs, my frazzled “Gnomish inventor/engineer”… or “Gearsmith” as he prefers to be called.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour… you’re gonna see some serious #*@$!
- Dr. Emmett Brown

Over the years he’s had many hit or miss inventions that he’s been tweaking and refining since his exile from Gnomeregan when the Trogs and radiation forced him out.

I used the Rogue class for this character due to the “everydayish” quality of the Rogue class. I find it very versatile, like the warrior – for a “everyman” sort of template. Of course, I took Engineering readily for more goodies to make later on.

Here’s an overview of what I did with him:

This is a view of his macro panel after “tinkering” with it a little.

I made custom specific macros for him and replaced them in my action bars. I kept the tooltips visible for ease of remembering – in case I forgot. Hey… it happens! :)

Taking the basic abilities I got at different levels, I came up with ideas for different gadgets, tools and gimmicks to both “rationalize” the Rogue class abilities.

I also picked new icons to help immerse myself into the character – and to give the illusion of playing a “different” class. The “Gearsmith”, for example.

Class-wise, yeah – he’s “still” a Rogue, but I don’t play him like that while in character. He’s just a very crafty inventor, or “Gearsmith” in this case. His gadgets have a heavy steampunkish quality – with a Azeroth/Gnomish Engineering flair.

Take the Cloak macro, for example as a replacement to his Stealth ability. He carries a handheld gadget that when he pushes the button, he’s bending the light around him, based on “highly experimental” mirrored thread in parts of his clothing. It’s very unstable, but it can allow him to sneak in and out of places.

The Boost Boots! macro is a pair of “Rocket Spurs” he has on his boots that allow his to run faster. It replaces the Rogue ability Sprint that makes you run really fast for a few seconds.

Ah! What did I tell you? 88 miles per hour!
The temporal displacement occurred exactly 1:20am
and zero seconds!
- Dr. Emmett Brown

The Melee Accelerant macro is a set of implanted “sequenced melee attack kinetics registors) or “SMAKRs” which puts his melee attack sequences into overdrive. It replaces the Rogue ability Slice and Dice that makes you increase melee attack speed. He just has to build up some kinetic energy (combo points) to activate it.

As you can see, I experimented with many of the Rogue abilities. Basically, he’s pulling a “Batman”, a gadgeteer using a Utility Belt. “Holy Monkey-Wrenches!” - You can also pull a Booster Gold, by “acquiring” tech or magic to help you on your adventures.

Other ideas
His [Mechanical Squirrel] is a portable lab – similar to K-9 from the Doctor Who series. I also use the various goggles for different uses, luckily I got a pair of [Ruby Shades] before they poofed from the vendors. I use those as a “lens” change when I spot something or focus on a area – could use it when I have Longsight using my [Ornate Spyglass] . [The Bright-Eye Goggles] are for studying things. My “normal” specs are the [Gnomish Goggles] or the classic [Flying Tiger Goggles]!

The great thing about this is that it helps get you in character. Get creative with your spells as a Mage, or powers as a Druid. Also for powers as magical items – magical rings, cloaks and offhand items could be a physical focus or representation of an abilty. Fetishes of odd items for Druids and Shaman types as well. Priests and Paladins can use weapons and offhand items to “use” abilites – like for resurrection spells.

Examples (with nods to D&D fans):

Rings or Cloaks of Invisibility for using Stealth or [Invibility potions]

Swords of Quickess (+haste “explanation” or use of Slice and Dice)

Ring of Freedom, Ring of Free Action using [Living Action Potions] or [Free Action Potions]

Boots of Speed (using Sprint, or [Swiftness Potions])

Using a Loot Card item from the collectible card game as a prop to do a spell- but that can be expensive.

An [Aboriginal Rod] can duble as a Voodoo Fetish for a Troll Witchdoctor.

For Warlocks, Shaman and Shadow Priests a [Laughing Skull Orb] can be a device used for some of the nastier spells.

Trinkets like the [Rainbow Generator] can also give you a magical spell or device to use.

You get the idea. It adds “flavor” to your adventures and role-playing.

The main things to keep in mind when “tinkering” with your abilities are these:

Don’t use anything to metagame.

Don’t God-mode or ruin people’s roleplaying.

Do be creative and have fun!

Don’t overdo it or really showy things, use sparingly – spamming an effect is just plain annoying and can disrupt RP in a group.

So it’s all limited to your imagination what props you can use and how you “rationalize” or make them fit the game world and your role-playing. See what’s around in your MMORPG of choice and try to spin it a different way. See what could work for your character and have fun.

I hope this gives you some ideas to use on a character you have or on a future one.

A “crash course” in trying out role-playing in MMORPGs, like World of Warcraft.

The Idea
This a no-frills attempt for new role-players and curious non-role-players to start role-playing with the bare essentials and learn more while blending into a RP server. A scouting mission, of sorts.

Here’s the scenario
Let’s pretend you are not a role-player in a MMORPG like World of Warcraft. You have the basic concept of what role-playing is and want to learn more first-hand. And quickly.

You’ve heard about RP servers and want to try it out. You have a character and found some people role-playing or maybe you’ve heard about a RP event. Let’s take and look and see what they do!

Been on a RP server (but not rping) and you want to give it a try. Scouting around on the Server Forums, you hear about a RP event. So why not go and see what’s up?

Been on a RP server, not RPing and stumbled upon some players walking, carrying on conversations and acting like some of the NPCs in game. They might be Role-Players! (or Giants! – I keed!) Instead of ignoring or avoiding them – why not give it a shot and stick around?

The Challenge
“How can I blend in, have fun and learn – but not look like a total dork doing it?”

Limitations
You have no AddOns and no real experience role-playing. But you are willing to try to learn at least. You don’t have time or know how to make a backstory (yet) or know all the tips (yet). Now what?

The Solution – The RP “Crash Course”

Our example is “Shammygirl”, a low level Draenei shaman. She might fit any of the above scenarios. We want to keep it simple. You can worry about the more intricate stuff later. While the name isn’t very RP-friendly – we’ll deal with it. If she wants to re-roll a RP character or get a name change, we can do that later on.

Ok! We got 30 minutes, so let’s get crackin’!

Basic RP Rules

“Spec” for Respect. Respect other players and be cool. Do not harass, grief or hurt others, whether they RP or not. Also – respect the Terms of Service and Code of Conduct for the game.

IC and OOC. IC = In Character (you are acting as your character would. OOC = Out of Character (The player, you. :) Try to stay IC during the event or when RPing in general. Being IC also may bring on some RP from others at random. Also, remember that your character is not you.

Know when to “exit” If the RP gets weird, I mean really weird – harassment, vulgar, offensive, etc… Just “exit stage right” and get out of there. That’s not the kind of RP you really want, nor is it “normal”. If it’s reportable, do it.

Don’t force role-playing or actions. Try not to “force” people to role-play with you or force your role-playing on them.

Have fun. That pretty much sums that up.

Don’t get derailed by OOC “stuff”. Try to overlook OOC chatter on /say and /yell. Exit from channels (Trade, Defense, General, etc.) that spam stuff that interferes with you being IC.

Character Movement

Walk or Run? In WoW, you can toggle Run/Walk via the ” / ” key on your number pad, right next to Num Lock. For laptops, quickly set it to a keybind under “Keybindings>Movement Keys”. There ya go!

When moving, borrow from everyday life. You now when to run and when not too. Apply that to your character. When entering an RP area, switching to walk is a good start. Jumping to move (or for no reason at all) makes no sense, so don’t do it. Move “normaly”, even if it’s virtually. This goes for mounts too!

Keep your eyes on the “road”. Try not to run “through” other players or ignore them standing there. Respect their “space”.

Speaking in character

What’s (( )) all about? In WoW, the use of brackets means that it’s out of character talk – the game last night, RL stuff and information. Avoid using this in /say and /yell. Speak like you think your character would, or should.

Talking the “talk” Speak like you think your character would, or should. You’re not going for an Academy Award, so just do your best. :)

Stop! Grammar Time! Use full sentences, not slang, texting or similar expressions. (lol, brb, bff, :), etc…) Use similar language and such as the NPCs do, even if it’s plain, simple English. it’s not all “thees and thous”.

Don’t worry about being fancy. Accents or speech patterns can wait. You just want to be understood and fit in for now.

Emotes

Expressing Yourself World or Warcraft, like other MMORPGS, have emotes to help your character to express actions and emotions.

Custom Emotes You can do (but don’t overdo) custom emotes in WoW by using “/e” + your expressed action or emote. Vyssa’s Example: /e looks around. becomes Vyssa looks around. in-game as an emote.

What to wear!?

The clothes on your back. You do not have to be “dressed” for RP. You can wear what you have, you can be “in fashion” later. If you have what you have, roll with it. Unless it’s a special function, you will fit in fine. While having some “casual clothes” is a nice touch, it can wait.

Shop the Auction House. Do a quick search for something you can actually wear and afford. Even some low level trash greens can be good.

Check your vendors. Find the armor, robe and clothing vendors. You might find something cheap and looks neat. You can upgrade later.

The Quickie Backstory

Keep it simple! Don’t go nuts and be a half-dragon, half-demon, half-weregerbil with fire coming out from your eyeballs. You are also not a diety, or are related or dated any lore character or have them on “speed dial”. Seriously, t’s just not a good plan, trust me on this.

You got your name, that’s a start. If your name sounds RPish and fits your race (A Draenei shaman named Vyssa, for example), you’re ahead of the game. If it’s not exactly RPish, wing it with a nickname (easy fix is to look at other NPCs of your race and see a quick name you like). “Shammygirl” becomes “Vyssa” if anyone asks, or make it a nickname!

Go with what “you” know. If you’ve done quests or listened to the introduction for your race – you at least have a basic idea of what is going on with your character. You may not know everything, but you know what your character has done to this point. If you get asked, be as vague as possible – but don’t sound “jerky” about it. :)

What if they ask me questions? Again, be vague to start, but try to answer it as simply as possible. You know where your character is “from”, your name and what you’ve done and been “recently”. That’s something if you are asked. Oh! Don’t forget your skills or class. They can be helpful in details about your character to start.

Be the part. As your get out and mingle, interact and all, try your best to get into your character’s head. Even with a simple backstory, you can take what you have and add to your role-playing.

Fitting in

It can start with “Hello”. Conversations can start very simple. Again, borrow from real life and adapt it to your character.

You get all kinds. You’re going to meet some great people, others not so much. Welcome to the internet, sadly. Some people RP very gruff characters, that’s their role most times, not them. You will get the hang of who is “ok” and who to exit from as you get more used to role-playing. If you are not sure about someone’s intent – ask via whisper OOCly.

Save the drama for your momma. Don’t create drama or get into conflicts. Just try to ease in, keep your eyes open, learn and have fun.

Need something to “talk” about? It’s not all epic stories and such. Even “everyday” chit chat can make decent conversation. See what openings you find and try. With a little imagination and role-playing, even “killing ten rats” can be made into a little adventure on it’s own.

It’s ok to be “new”. We all start somewhere, so just hang in there – you might have more fun than you thought. We are all people past the pixels. :)

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you don’t know anyone, give someone a nice, quick ((Hi! I’m new, so just trying to learn.)) They might just help and make things easier to let you into the RP.

Learn by watching, then doing. See what seems to work or not work when watching conversations or in a conversation.

Don’t be afraid to say “Thank You”. If someone has helped you or you had a good interaction, don’t be afraid to give them a OOC ((Thank you.)) via whisper, or in-game mail.

Learn by watching, then doing. See what seems to work or not work when watching conversations or in a conversation.

Mistakes happen, learn from them. A typo, a random jump caused by a errrant space bar, or an accidental “lol” can and may happen. Just take it in stride and try to avoid doing it again. In a conversation and something happens, give a short whisper and say ((hey, sorry about that. :) ))

Win some… You might fit in and meet a some other role-players, that can help you network and meet others. Make friends and “Friend” others that you had good experiences with or that were helpful.

…Lose some. Some events or interactions pan out well, others may not. Maybe there was a bunck of people and you were the wallflower. That’s ok – it happens. Just like in everyday life, some times you meet people, sometimes you don’t. Not every RP experience turns out to be as great as it should. Sometimes it takes a few times to get into it all, so just hang in there. Don’t give up!

Afterward

Developing Your Character. You can take your character and develop more details and a backstory. take a look through The RP Survival Guide and see how it can help you. There’s a lot of helpful ideas and tips to help.

You have options. You can always start a fresh character or rework and existing one with a backstory and go from there as well. Names can always be changed and low levels can always be re-rolled. You can always transfer as well if you like.

Your RP Community! Seek out your server’s Role-Playing Coummnity via the forums or if they have a wiki or social site dedicated to Role-Players on your server. Make friends, learn and have fun.

For Horde and Forsaken RP, there has been a really good update to the Ruins of Lordaeron, specifically the expanded Courtyard area.

When Cataclysm started, they revamped the Ruins around the main courtyard. Previously, your RP are was limited on the surface. The only door into the new expanded courtyard was blocked, so unless you were summoned or flew in… you’d never see it. So for pre-60′s, you were out of luck. Until now!

See Figure “A“. Keep “B” for later – I’ll get to that! :)

The Expanded Courtyard!

Just recently they “blew” the door open, so you can walk in and explore the new digs. It’s got some neat areas for role-playing ideas. Forsaken marketplace, events – even Warstuff/Apothecary Society RP. You will notice NPCs like Undead Citizens hanging out and the Kor’kron Guard patrolling the area.

Here’s some shots, but take a look for yourself in-game.

There’s some real nice areas inside. Recently, the “Kosh’harg, Gathering of the Clans” event was held there on Earthen Ring. Was a fun night!

The “Secret” Passage!

With the new, it’s time to mention the old. That’s the “B” – The secret passage!

This passage exits on both sides of the old courtyard. This has been around since retail and often gets overlooked. Here’s a teaser of what’s lies ahead:
