John grew up in a hi-tech household. His dad was a MIT grad who worked as a design engineer for DEC, and later Intel. John was breadboarding basic circuits as a child – flip-flop, 555 timer IC, etc. – and picking up whatever else he could from Forrest M. Mims' instructional books originally sold by Radio Shack. John talks about acquiring some old computers from dad's work place and building a network environment with machines running Unix, Linux, Apache, Mac, and Windows. He learned how to get these machines to work together, and then learned about system vulnerabilities and pen-testing with Metasploit. As we talk with John about Wireshark (and WinPcap), the subject of the Chrome and Firefox plugin HTTPS Everywhere comes up as a way to protect oneself against traffic sniffing. The discussion inevitably branches to the topic of antivirus/malware protection and security in general. HOSTS files rule!? I did mention that John is a Theatre major involved in the tech side of things, didn't I? USM's last play production of the year – Orlando – will feature scenery created with projection mapping. Instead of painting scenery forms to look like buildings, living rooms or what have you, the scene shop crew paints the forms with a special projection paint – an off-white paint with glass beads. Then the forms are illuminated by video projector(s) with scenery images or video. The video projectors are controlled by MadMapper, a program that maps the images or video to conform to the shape of the forms. This will be very exciting to see, and see it I will as I regularly attend opening nights of all USM plays. -Rich Rich's RPG is a podcast hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O'Neil in Google+ Hangout. Online security has always been a hot topic,</itunes:subtitle> <itunes:summary>“The Last Password You’ll Have to Remember!” Amber Gott, Online Community Manager for LastPass.com joins Jim and Rich to talk about online password management and security. Online security has always been a hot topic, and it’s only going to be more so as time goes on. With that in mind, there’s never been a better time to look at how you’re handling your online presence, specifically the passwords you use for site logins, be it a gaming site or commerce such as Amazon.com. To start with, people are known for using the same password across multiple sites because it’s too hard remembering all the site/password combinations. Or they have a similar reason. Quite often, they use very simple passwords that are easily guessable. Passwords such as ‘123456’ and ‘password’ are just plain horrible choices. Dictionary-based passwords such as ‘smellycat’ are not much better. They’re way too obvious and lack any level of complexity that would prevent someone from cracking them. So this presents a huge security hole, one that could cause a lot of heartache, not to mention significant financial loss. And yes, this stuff really happens. Every single day! This is where LastPass comes in. LastPass is a secure password manager that integrates with your favorite web browser for the purpose of managing online sites and passwords. It stores those sites and passwords in an encrypted vault which you alone can access. All that’s required of you is to remember a single master password. And while you’re at it, you really ought to make it a complex password, one with at least 8-characters, though longer is always better. And it ought to contain at least one each of the following: caps and lower-case alpha (A-a) numbers (0-9) special characters such as ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + ; : ’ ” \ / | < > so you end up with something like this: Z*&e#sDM6d9cQ …because this password is the key to your online kingdom. Oh, and you’d best not forget it because LastPass keeps no record of your password whatsoever. That’s right. There is no ‘answer a secret question for a password reset’ workaround. And this is by design. Your master password stays with you. When you type it in, it’s concatenated with your username (email address), and then hashed with SHA to create an encryption key. This is the key used to encrypt/decrypt your vault locally, i.e., the process takes place right there on your computer. Not online. That means you never have to worry about someone at LastPass accessing your vault. They wouldn’t, of course, but more than that, they can’t. You alone hold the master password, and your key never leaves your computer. And what about credit card numbers and shipping information? Do you dislike typing out all that stuff when making an online purchase? LastPass has you covered there. Create a new Form Fill Profile to hold such personal information as name, address, gender, birthday, SSN, credit card number, bank account routing number, and any related notes you’d like, and LastPass safely stores this alongside your passwords in the vault. LastPass offers free and paid subscription versions. The subscription is dirt cheap at $12/year. What do you gain? Take a look at this comparison page, and you’ll see that phone/mobile apps are one additional feature. Yubikey support is another. Yubikey provides one of a number of ways to implement multi-factor authentication, something which provides an extra layer of security for logging into LastPass when you’re at less than ideal location such as a hotel, public library, or any open wi-fi. Is it time to secure your online life? You bet it is. So head over to https://lastpass.com and get started by hitting the Download LastPass button and grabbing the installer. Once you’re done with installation and setup, take the LastPass Security Challenge. That’ll show you just where you stand with your own online password security, and what you can do to improve it.</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>The Average Guy Blog and Podcast Network</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <rawvoice:embed><iframe width="320" height="24" src="http://theaverageguy.tv/?powerpress_embed=3540-podcast&amp;powerpress_player=default" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></rawvoice:embed>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://media.blubrry.com/hometech/media.blubrry.com/rrpg/theaverageguy.tv/audio/RRPG020F.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

#19 Rich’s Random Podcast Generator: Acronis True Image Home 2012 PC Backup and Recovery Review

Rich's Random Podcast Generator

Rich's RPG

TAG Podcasts

2012

Acronis

Acronis Back up Software

Acronis True Image Home 2012

Backup

PC

Recovery

True Image Home

<div style="padding-top:5px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:5px;padding-left:0px;;" class="linksalpha_widget"> <iframe style="height:25px !important; border:0px solid gray !important; overflow:hidden !important; width:550px !important;" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowTransparency="true" src="http://www.linksalpha.com/social?blog=The+Average+Guy+Blog+and+Podcast+Network&link=http%3A%2F%2Ftheaverageguy.tv%2F2012%2F07%2F23%2F19-richs-random-podcast-generator-acronis-true-image-home-2012-pc-backup-and-recovery-review%2F&title=%2319+Rich%26amp%3Brsquo%3Bs+Random+Podcast+Generator%3A+Acronis+True+Image+Home+2012+PC+Backup+and+Recovery+Review&desc=This+week+Jim+and+Rich+go+guestless+and+spend+some+time+covering+Acronis+True+Image+Home+2012+Backup+%26amp%3Bamp%3B+Recovery+Software.%26amp%3B%23160%3B+After+talking+for+a+few+minutes+about+working+with+our+friends+and+neighbors+on+their+PC+problems%2C+we+take+an+in+depth+look+at+the+Acronis+UI+and+spend+some+time&fc=333333&fs=arial&fblname=like&fblref=facebook&fbllang=en_US&fblshow=1&fbsbutton=1&fbsctr=1&fbslang=en&fbsendbutton=0&twbutton=1&twlang=en&twmention=theAverageGuytv&twrelated1=&twrelated2=&twctr=1&lnkdshow=show&lnkdctr=1&buzzbutton=0&buzzlang=en&buzzctr=0&diggbutton=0&diggctr=1&stblbutton=1&stblctr=1&g1button=1&g1ctr=1&g1lang=en-US"> </iframe></div>This week Jim and Rich go guestless and spend some time covering Acronis True Image Home 2012 Backup &#38; Recovery Software.&#160; After talking for a few minutes about working with our friends and neighbors on their PC problems, we take an in depth look at the Acronis UI and spend some time covering items that<div class="feedflare">

We didn’t want to trade external drives; we didn’t want DVD copies. We wanted to use the Internet to transfer. Tried setting up FTP or WebDAV without much success. Found CrashPlan when it was starting out, and it was the perfect solution for us. Encrypted, background, used existing storage, free or cheap, cross-platform. Now when friends or family ask about how to protect their files, I set them up with CrashPlan, and if I repair or fix their computer, it is a requirement.” -Nathaniel LindleyNathaniel’s CrashPlan+ and Drobo Setup at Home - June 2012Mac Mini -(Mid 2007) OS X 10.6.8 (always on) 2GB RAM Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz CrashPlan+Drobo(2nd Gen) connected via Firewire (2TB+2TB+2TB+3TB) 5.4 TB usable storage 2.2 TB of CrashPlan archives on DroboUPSAPC Back-UPS ES 550Notes:Connected to home LAN and Internet through Comcast standard connection My home computers backup using CrashPlan to the Mac mini and Drobo over the LAN Never exceeded 250GB quota from Comcast My 3 main computers (iMac, MacBook and Windows 7 desktop) backup to Mac Mini, CrashPlan Central and a friend's home (he uses Windows Home Server 2011 for storage) 20 friends and family backup to Mac Mini and Drobo (some have more than one computer backing up to me) 30 archives for about 2.2 TB Have swapped out drives in Drobo to add more storage over time.Pros:Upgrades for firmware and software is smooth Replacing drives and growing storage is easy Redundant and safe large storage looks like single disk to Mac OS CrashPlan encrypts data and traffic for peace of mind CrashPlan data de-duplication is efficient Low power use (about 65-70 watts when in use for Drobo and Mac Mini)Cons:Drobo seems to kill Western Digital Green drives. I’ve RMA’d 3 of them and replaced with WD Caviar Black. Performance is slow, both on Read and Write operations through the Mac Mini. Could be Firewire 400 connection limitation? Hard to tell which CrashPlan which archive belongs to who Can’t read SMART data on drive or identify by slot and serial number or model of drive in Drobo Dashboard Simple and clean setup*Diagrams made by DroboRich’s RPG is a show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil in Google+ Hangout. Mike Howard of jpeg2RAW joins Rich O’Neil as co-host for the show, and joining those two are John Stutsman, Paul Braren, and John ‘Diehard’ Zajdler. Discussions center on Windows 8 - Start screen and features such as Restore + Reset and File History, plus the Splashtop app for iPad and Android, and more. There’s been some push back on the new W8 user interface – the Start screen in particular. The community is not exactly feeling all cuddly about it, yet I think it has possibilities; folks just have to get used it. To know is to love, no? Like, then… ok..tolerate… maybe. Knowing about screens that pop up when you mouse over the edges of the Start screen, and knowing the keyboard shortcuts goes a long way towards getting acclimated. I like the ability to search from the Start screen - no need to hit a search box or anything like that, just start typing and results pop up on the left and right. Very nice. Other tweaks and improvements in W8 include the use of the context sensitive ‘ribbon’ in Windows Explorer. So ya, I know we can get used to this new look, and of course we can still access the normal looking desktop. But then this UI was designed with a tablet in mind. And speaking of that, John Stutsman is running W8 on his 1st gen iPad. He’s doing it with Splashtop, an app that’s also available for Android devices. John says it makes the UI come alive, so you can really see and understand what Microsoft was thinking when they made this radical departure. Paul Braren digs into a W8 feature called File History. Though versioning has been included in Windows OS’s going back to Win2000, it’s essentially been buried until now. W8 puts a UI on it that an average guy can make use of. We think… John Zajdler reports that the next and last pre-RTM version of Windows 8 will be released in early June. He hints that the Windows Store should have a lot more offerings by then. John also talks about the Reset and Restore features, something that should cut down on visits to the local computer repair shop. See this AnandTech article for a nice summary: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5290/windows-8s-refresh-and-reset-functionality-detailed The short story is this: Reset brings your OS back to a fresh install state while Restore preserves user files, settings, and any apps you’ve downloaded from Windows Store. Unfortunately, non-Windows Store apps need to be reinstalled,. But hey, it’s a lot better than nothing, right? -Rich O’Neil Rich’s RPG is a show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil in Google+ Hangout. The guys owe a debt of gratitude to Christian Johnson over atBIOS-Mods.com for hacking the BIOS to get at some additional hidden features of the little server’s motherboard. You can directly download the modified BIOS here: bios-mods.com/BIOS/AMI/HP/o41072911mod.rar You can also join in the discussion about it here: bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-HP-Proliant-Microserver-AMI-BIOS-MOD The guys are doing everything they can with this box, which includes running virtual machines – VM’s. Jay Moore deals with VMWare ESXi (hypervisor) at work and he answers the guys questions about using the VMWare platform. There’s a lot of good technical discussion in this podcast. Enjoy! They talk in depth about the characteristics and inner workings of SSDs while trying to help Jim get the best bang for the buck. Though it’s an excellent choice, you might be surprised to see what Jim finally settles on. The guys also discuss media streaming devices in the sub-$100 range. Over the last month, Rich had been testing the Roku 2 XS, WD TV Live Plus, WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, and Apple TV 2. The following is by no means an in depth review, but rather an evaluation of points relevant to what Rich wants specifically in a media streaming device. That said, the devices are listed in order of worst to first. ROKU 2 XS While the UI is probably the 2nd best of this lot, the Roku 2 XS is a poor choice for streaming network shares, despite availability of a few 3rd party channels (apps?) that are supposed to provide that functionality. The channels seem to work, then they don’t. Kind of fiddly, and frankly a pain in the neck. So the Roku will be going back to Best Buy for a refund. WD TV LIVE PLUS WD TV Live Plus is quite excellent in that it is able to see and connect to all the network shares right out of the box. And it streams a more formats than the Roku. However, its UI was the worst of these four. So back it goes, also. WD TV LIVE STREAMING MEDIA PLAYER WD TV Live Streaming Media Player is the successor to the Plus. It has all the flexibility and functionality of the Plus along with a nicely improved UI. Everything works right out of the box. Very easy. This is a device you could live with. However… APPLE TV 2 Of all the devices tested, the Apple TV 2 has the slickest UI. And while it’s limited out of the box to iTunes Home Sharing only, there is a workable hack that lets you install XBMC which gives you access to shares on your local network. It’s also quicker responding than So if you’re not afraid to do a little research and jailbreaking, the Apple TV 2 combined with XBMC will give you a great overall experience. If you’re not into hacking/jailbreaking or you’re an exclusive iTunes user, then the Apple TV 2 may be your cup of tea. Most iTunes users will probably think so. But if you need a box that gives you access to network shares and a decent overall experience, you may want to consider the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player. Jim Collison is off today. So…John’s HP MediaSmart Server EX 490 has died (motherboard) so he’s modding it with plans to turn it into a port multiplier drive bay. Mike had an issue caused by a miniport adapter in bridge mode that was absolutely killing his wired network speed. The miniport adapter was likely installed when he put VirtualBox on his PC. He disabled it in Device Manager and the issue went away. I had the same issue on my laptop where it would occasionally fail to connect to WiFi. I also had been using VirtualBox. They guys talk about different types of hybrid drive options. A hybrid drive is one that pairs an SSD with a regular spinning hard drive in order to gain speed improvement over using a hard drive only. The trade-off is that you lose the full speed of an SSD but end up with a drive that is still faster than normal and which has a lot of capacity. Icy Dock Xpander – pairing SSD and hard drive, the device automatically creates a RAID 0 partition equal to 2x the size of the SSD and a 2nd partition equal to whatever space is left over on just the hard drive HighPoint RocketHybrid 1220 – pairing SSD and hard drive, the card uses SSD caching with claims of up to 80% of SSD performance in Mike explains a couple of things for us including how to set up SSD caching on a Z68 motherboard using Intel Rapid Storage Drivers. Mike also critiques my WHS 2011’s RAID5 configuration, making some interesting points that has me thinking about going back and setting up the whole array again. The guys also set me straight on WHS 2011’s 2TB server backup limitation which is due to the limitation of the VHD file format in which the backups are stored. Acronis True Image Home 2012 has a new sync feature that let’s friends and family sync files between each other over the Web. All three of us have been using Acronis for awhile, and it’s an excellent compliment or alternative to the WHS PC backup function. If you repair PCs, this is a must have tool because of its ability to clone larger drives to smaller ones. In the show this week: Rich O’Neil, John Zajdler, and Mike Faucher Rich’s RPG is a weekly show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil in Google+ Hangout. Michael M. works with servers, RAID and virtualization so we hit him up with a bunch of questions. The guys analyze some RAID 5 benchmarks and talk about RAID setups. Most any drives will work in a RAID, but some have better firmware, a better controller so they have better performance. Do you rely on Windows Update to keep your hardware drivers up to date? Rich recently ran into a network problem which could only be solved by grabbing the latest driver direct from the manufacturer, Realtek. Although some of us are fans, WHS 2011 hasn’t been quite what we hoped it would be. Remote Web Access, for instance, is a common problem though this really should be a straightforward thing. And pulling a large amount of files from a backup is painfully slow, as Mike Howards found out first-hand when he tried to recover a partition’s worth of files. The transfer speed is markedly different from the 1st version of WHS. Michael Martis is into virtualization and he talks a lot about it. Hyper-V is his thing, and he’s had as many as 22 virtual machines running on a server at the same time, which is just plain ridiculous! Seriously though, Hyper-V is more robust than other virtualization software such as VirtualBox. For example, Hyper-V can gracefully shut down its virtual machines as its system is rebooting or shutting down but VirtualBox never sees it coming. It splatters it bits all over the place, as John Stutsman says. Michael also talks quite a bit about hardware pass-through. Intel’s next gen processor, Ivy Bridge, is coming sometime in the 1st quarter of 2012. Hopefully. And with it comes tri-gate transistor technology which translates into a more powerful yet cooler chip. We have been rapidly approaching the end of the line for Moore’s law but tri-gate technology extends it by a couple decades. John explains PFC – Power Factor Correction. PF, measured on a scale of 0 – 1, is a complicated subject having to do with inefficiencies when delivering electrical power to certain load types. In resistive AC circuits (filament lamps, strip heaters, cooking stoves, etc.), voltage and current remain in phase so all power is consumed by the load in Watts (to get 1W of useful work only 1VA of apparent power needs to be transmitted) . The problem arises from non-resistive loads, i.e., reactive loads which use capacitors and inductors. Because of the electrical characteristics of these components, voltage and current run up to 90 degrees out of phase. When that happens, then in order to get 1W of useful work we need more than 1VA of apparent power which increases the loading (and costs) on utility equipment (ultimately leading to higher rates to pay for more and bigger equipment and more generation). Read more here: http://en.wikipedia....ki/Power_factor That’s why we are seeing more and more APFC (Active Power Factor Correction) in more and more appliances such as computer power supplies. And in the case of computer power supplies, good Active PFC circuitry adds to the cost of manufacturing. But in the end, as in most cases, you get what you pay for. Windows 7’s Backup and Restore is a very solid solution that most folks don’t know about. Check it out on your W7 system here: Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore. If you’re running W7 Professional or above, you have the additional option of saving backups to a network drive. Jim talks about AI – Artificial Intelligence – running on off-the-shelf PC hardware. At his university, IT is developing collaborative robots which network together when they come in proximity of each other. The idea is to have these robots work together to search out land mines and help keep soldiers safe. This week’s topic include multi-monitor setups, Belarc Advisor, home-user RAID problems, Google+ pluses and minuses, and an extended discussion on podcasting and what it takes to get things rolling. Belarc – “System Management for the Internet Age” – is a software suite which provides an in-depth assay of IT assets. Sorry, but this is not your typical home-user software. Belarc’s customers include NASA, US Marine Corps, US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, among others. As you may surmise, besides being cost-prohibitive for a home-user, Belarc also provide more information than one can shake a stick at. Information overload, to be more precise. If you’re not an IT professional working in a corporate environment, you could spend a ton of time researching the significance of each of the individual points of an assessment only to come to the conclusion that most do not apply to you and your home situation. Still, Belarc offers a version called Belarc Advisor which anyone, including home-users, can download and use for free. Curious about how your PC stacks up against the Belarc standard? Then check it out. There are components you will find handy such as the ability to recover license keys for installed programs, including your Windows product key. Mike Howard had a recent RAID snafu in which his RAID 0 array stopped working on his desktop PC. He was none too happy about that, but even less so with WHS 2011 and its failure to give him back his files and folders, his way, right away. Opening a PC backup to grab a couple files or folders works fine when we’re talking about a few. But try restoring something as large as a partition that way and you’ll see what Mike ran into. It’s agonizingly slow. We’re talking days just to restore 1 TB of data. MS is aware, but has no plans to do anything about it. Oh sure, Mike could have worked around it, but why should he? If he had been using the previous WHS version (v1) he’d have been able to do exactly what he was trying to do here. Mike and Jim get into an extended discussion about what it takes to get a podcast off the ground - everything from coming up with guests to advertising the show. There’s a lot of good, solid info here. In the show this week: Jim Collison, Rich O’Neil, Mike Howard Rich’s RPG is a weekly show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil in Google+ Hangout. Paul’s a long-time IT guy who launched his own tech site – Tinkertry – last July. He’s been a busy guy ever since, posting some fairly technical articles ranging from SSD caching to virtualization with special emphasis on VMWare products, something he’s familiar with as he’s traveled all over the country as a VCP certified technical consultant. Topics include: iOS 5 update – features and functionality, Google+ Hangout Extras, Logmein Hamachi, Belarc, DriveImage XML, fixing those old XP machines, Secunia PSI, SIW, Ninite and Ninite Updater, CCleaner, processing power vs. power efficiency, and a lot more. *Warning: long podcast ahead!! As mentioned last week, Rich went The Full Fo-Shay at Newegg.com and bought parts for a whole new Intel i7-2600K based system which he received and put together in time for this week’s podcast. The i7 CPU coupled with ASRock Z68 Pro3 motherboard, Crucial RealSSD and Cooler Master Silent Pro PSU is pulling a mere 38W at idle, and that’s with two monitors running off the on-board graphics via HDMI + DVI. The guys spend some time talking about utilities and tricks they use to repair/reinstall XP computers. After using Windows 7 for the last 2 1/2 years, it’s pretty hard to look at XP again but family and friends still use it and come to them for help. Google + Hangout has been previewing new features, or ‘extras’ as they are called, which the guys explore and discuss. These include: Named hangouts Shared notes and sketchpad Google Docs integration Screen-sharing Tim introduces us to Ninite Updater, a desktop app that works in conjunction with Ninite. If you’ve never heard of Ninite itself, and especially if you’re the go-to person for PC repairs, you need to check out this time-saver. Ninite offers an a la carte selection of the most common apps you’d want to install on a new PC, and use an automated batch download and installation process which is a joy to behold. No more ‘next, next, next’ and no toolbars or junk that frequently comes with software installations. Ninite strips it all out. Paul talks in detail about backing up remote PC’s to his Windows Home Server server over VPN using Logmein Hamachi. And, he mentions FingerPrint, a PC app that lets you print directly from your iPhone to an attached or networked printer, and it also prints to OneNote or your favorite PDF viewer. The cost is $9.99 and well worth it. All this and a lot, lot more in this week’s RRPG. In the show this week: Jim Collison, Rich O’Neil, John Zajdler, Mike Howard, Tim Black, Jay Moore, Paul Braren Rich’s RPG is a weekly show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil on Google + Hangout. Topics include uses for VM servers in the home, pop screens and swivel mounts for microphones, Apple v. MS, and the good ol' Ford Pinto. A majority of people own computers that run on the Intel platform. Mike’s entire household runs on AMD because he like’s the bang for the buck. Plus he likes to root for the underdog which is why he sides with Microsoft. Wait…what?? Have you seen those recent Windows commercials on television? One or two might be passable, might be, but on the whole they are squirm-inducing and weak. Microsoft’s approach seems so out of touch. It’s a simple fact that Apple crushes MS when it comes to consumer marketing. The top-down approach always worked for them because Steve Job’s was a one-of-a kind individual who could envision the future. But Microsoft’s top-down approach doesn’t work, and never has. Folks like to lay the blame at Steve Ballmer’s feet. Is it time for him to go? Or is it simply time for a new approach? Rich has a spare PC now that he’s gone The Full Fo-Shay* and purchased the parts to build his new i7-2600k system. He’s now exploring ways he might make use of his cast-off Q9550 system by setting it up as a VM server. Jay, John, Mike discuss various scenarios including Mike’s Super Router which you can read about over on the the Home Server Show forums. Mike has combined the best of pfSense + untangle running on XenServer to create a front end that protects and monitors his home network. This goes way beyond your typical store-bought router. Congratulations to Jay Moore on passing the VMWare Certified Professional test. Jay is now the official go-to guy for all that is VMWare. Right? There’s a discussion about notorious corporate decisions of the past, notably one that affected the safety of the Ford Pinto. John, it turns out, is a serious electronics geek who way back in the day would diagnose and repair a car radio rather than shell over big bucks to a dealer for a replacement. He’d figure out that a transistor was bad and he’d just picked up a new one and and replace it. The guys graciously explain SG-1 and Cylons to Rich, the last person on this good Earth to hear about this stuff. *The Full Fo-Shay is a term first coined by Rich O’Neil on RRPG #6. It refers one spending a good chunk of change to purchase a premium product. It can also refer to when one purchases a few similar premium products in order to check them out. The idea for the term was inspired by Mike Faucher whose BYOB podcast usually fires up their listeners to spend vast sums of money on new hardware which no one ever really seems to mind doing. In the show this week: Jim Collison, Rich O’Neil, Mike Howard, John Stutsman, Jay Moore Rich’s RPG is a weekly show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil on Google + Hangout. Topics include in-home streaming devices, a Netflix apology email, Mouse without Borders, Windows 8 and the Metro UI, and what will now be known forever more as The Full Fo-Shay. Windows 8 is the new Microsoft OS equally at home on desktop and tablet. That’s due to the addition of a new UI library called WinRT, a set of API’s which among other things supports the Metro style. Windows Phone 7 users are already familiar with Metro – it’s the look characterized by tiles. While the Win32 API is still part of the OS, developers working with WinRT will be creating apps that run in a sandboxed environment meaning they won’t be able to crash the system, and they won’t be able to cause the infamous Windows ‘bit rot’. Metro apps will also be Windows AppStore-ready. The guys get into a fairly lengthy discussion around the new Metro UI – what it means to consumers and enterprises, and how folks might find themselves interacting with it. Mics and related accessories for podcasting setups are also discussed, as well as streaming devices for the home network. Are you surrounded by computers, each with its own keyboard and mouse? Clunky, isn’t it? Mouse without Borders lets you share one keyboard and mouse between them all, seamlessly integrating monitors from up to 4 different systems into your main multi-monitor setup. Once configured, simply drag your mouse to one of those monitor screens and keyboard control slides over with it, letting you control the system that is hooked up to that monitor. In the show this week: Jim Collison, Rich O’Neil, Mike Howard, John Zajdler Rich’s RPG is a weekly show hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil. John is an Electrical Engineer with some power industry experience, Jay is a systems admin for TriWest Healthcare Alliance, and Mike is a fellow podcaster and creator of jpeg2RAW over at novstudios.com. Topics include post-9/11 technology, the electric power grid, virtualization, and discussions around PC builds and repairs. Memorials marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 recently all over the USA. The guys talk about people they know who were either in Trade Center building or the immediate area on the morning of the attack. Mike talks about technology that protects buildings. One company in particular, Line-X, makes a spray-on coating called PAXCON. An entire wall coated with the product merely flexes from the force of a bomb blast, whereas a normal, untreated wall is blown to pieces. Pentagon officials were impressed enough to use it on their building. Check out the video. Jim is ready for remote-controlled commercial flights; the other guys, not so much. They want someone piloting the plane who has the same thing at risk as they do. Then again, FMS (flight management systems) is already in use on all commercial flights, doing much of the work of a pilot. John talks about his experience with power grids, as well as the big problem that occurred recently in California. NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) is charged with ensuring the reliability and security of our nation’s power grid. New computer users, which is easier to pick up and learn? Mac or PC? It’s debatable but one thing is certain, Apple provides their users with training whereas Microsoft does so such thing. VirtualBox is a great virtualization product for enterprise as well as home user. If you do a lot of testing, this could be your solution. Don’t forget to install Guest Additions for seamless integration between host and VM. Andrew hooks up a friend who recently spent $4K for a successful hard drive data recovery with an HP Proliant Microserver. Price for the little box is ~$300. All decked out with OS, hard drives, and a couple of external drives to backup the server pushes the price to ~$1200. And yet another story, two actually, courtesy of Andrew and Rich, about putting a failing hard drive in a freezer in order to facilitate a DYI data recovery. They’ve both done it, they’ve both had success. Lucky. As Jim and Mike are both involved in hiring new personnel at their respective companies, they see a number of resumes. However, their actual interview processes vary a good deal from each other. Mike takes the more traditional approach by first reviewing the resume, which had better be well-written or it hits the trash can. Jim’s company, on the other hand, begins by having the applicants take an online test and gets around to the resume later in the process. It’s interesting to hear each perspective, and yet each way seems to work well. Rich is running with a new mic setup this week - an SM58 going through an M-Audio Fast Track USB audio interface. He’s replacing his Logitech ClearChat Pro headset mic which he thinks is too thin sounding and lacking a smooth dynamic response. Tim Black loves his Blue Yeti, an excellent microphone for less than $90 – big sound in close proximity. Tim sets his on a desk a few feet away so we don’t get a true representation of what this mic can do, but take our word; it’s a good bang for the buck. And we still don’t know how Jim gets all that sound out of an $39 Plantronics headset. Some suspect he has a Heil PR40 hanging overhead, just out of sight. Tim shares a happy tale of how he recovered a ton of accidentally deleted music files with Piriform’s Recuva. Mike’s had a similar experience, using PhotoRec to recover a bunch of photos from a thumb drive. Mike is finally getting around to redoing his unRAID setup. He’s not been happy with his server’s performance, but a new SATA card will give his parity drive much better throughput and boost the overall read/write speeds. He’ll also update the unRAID OS which resides on a thumb drive. Crazy! We can’t wait to hear how it goes. Hey, have you seen the Samsung Galaxy Note? This is one huge phone, on the order of a small tablet. Or as our friend Gary Johnson says, this thing’s a phablet! And finally, yet another HP TouchPad update. HP will be doing another production run, but the guys think they might try to squeeze folks for $250 instead of selling them for the fire-sale price of $99 which sent them flying off store shelves in the first place. Jim goes off on a bit of a rant over HP’s handling of the whole affair, channeling well-known HP antagonist Christian Johnson. There had been some price drops the weekend before but nobody really saw this one coming. By late Friday night here in the US, folks were abuzz with the prospect of a fire sale. By Saturday morning, they were roaming the aisles of their local big box stores looking for the bargain tablet, or as one person said, an early Christmas gift. Were you able to lay your hands on one? Were they all sold out? Are you still looking? Well, don’t despair. We suspect there are more stashed away somewhere. From the Guys who brought you the Home Tech Podcast, and a production of the Average Guy Network, Rich’s RPG is a weekly show about the world of technology hosted by Jim Collison and Rich O’Neil. Using Google+ hangout to meet up with technology guys and gals, they discuss whatever is hot, current or frustrating them at the moment. No outlines, no agenda, no worries. This week, Rich and Jim are joined once again by Mike Howard ofjpeg2RAW fame. Rich and Mike talk about general RAID configurations, settings and hardware that they use with their respective home servers. Rich, new to RAID, is using a HighPoint RocketRAID 2720 in his Windows Home Server 2011 machine, while Mike uses a SuperMicro SATA card in his UnRAID server. What is UnRAID, you ask? From the Lime Tech web site: “unRAID Server is an embedded Network Attached Storage server Operating System designed to boot from a USB Flash device and specifically designed for digital media storage.” Basically, UnRAID does not stripe the parity of an array across all drives as a RAID5 does, but rather assigns one fixed drive as the parity drive. It also does not stripe data across the drives as RAID5 does, but rather writes files in their entirety to a single drive which is NTFS formatted and easily readable on any system. The down side of UnRAID is that the performance (the writes, anyway) is lower than a single drive’s. This is because parity calculations are being done at the same time. Overall, though, UnRAID is a pretty robust storage solution. Ever thought about backing up to the cloud but hesitate because of the cost of online storage? Jim and Mike talk about using Wuala to create a free backup network using your friends’ PC’s. If you’ve ever been watching Netflix and had Windows updates break in on the movie, you understand that an HTPC and Windows Updates do not mix. Rich tries to convince Jim to shut off Windows Updates, along with other app updates such as Flash. If you don’t use your HTPC to browse the Internet, and most people, Rich suggests managing updates manually or skipping them altogether. This’ll put an end to annoying interruptions and increase WAF. Anything goes, hence the name of the podcast. Using Google+ Hangout to host the podcasts, guys and gals talk about whatever’s hot or not, current or historic, or anything else on their minds. This week, Rich and Jim are joined by Mike Howard and the Zajdler twins, John and Joseph, who sound so much alike that you cannot tell the difference between the two at times. Give a listen and see what we mean. Rich gets things rolling by tossing out a couple of problems he’s run into with Windows Home Server 2011. Joseph Zajdler lends his network experience and expertise to the topics of domain name resolution, DNS cache on the router, HOSTS files, and certificates. Mike Howard talks about using DNS forwarding on his pfSense router to deal with name resolution problems. While realizing that we have our little tricks – reboot the router, release and renew the domain, rerun various setup wizards – to get around these problems, the big question remains: why does this stuff happen in the first place? Chris Lux joins mid-show to talk about his Kindle. He runs down the features, and explains the physics and physiology behind the reason why E Ink is easier on the eyes than active screen technology used by tablets. He is a doctor, after all, so we’ll take his word for it. Joseph Z. talks about his eBook reader, the Kobo. We also cover eBooks themselves, and the idea of renting an eTextbook vs. buying ‘dead tree’.
