The most absurd example was two months ago when a 539,000 decrease in nonfarm payrolls was applauded by many media outlets as being good news. With that in mind, the Labor Department announced Thursday that job losses in June were far greater than analysts had forecast, making one wonder how the Obama-loving media will spin this positively. Consider that as you read Bloomberg's early take : Employers in the U.S. cut 467,000 jobs in June, the unemployment rate rose and hourly earnings stagnated, offering little evidence the Obama administration’s stimulus package is shoring up the labor market. The payroll decline was more than forecast and followed a 322,000 drop in May, according to Labor Department figures released today in Washington. The jobless rate jumped to 9.5 percent, the highest since August 1983, from 9.4 percent. [...] Payrolls were forecast to drop 365,000 after a 345,000 decrease initially reported for May, according to the median of 79 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Estimates ranged from declines of 150,000 to 500,000. Job losses peaked at 741,000 in January, the most since 1949. The jobless rate was projected to climb to 9.6 percent from 9.4 percent. Forecasts ranged from 9.3 percent to 9.7 p
All Related

The software giant is the first major search service to do this on a regular basis, using public APIs from Twitter--and it is an aggressive move, which seems to be part of its major push of Bing.
All Related

Extra workers will be added this holiday weekend, with a surge of business expected Sunday, the day after July Fourth. The sun's out, the sky's blue and for businesses whose livelihoods depend on Sacramento-area residents' love of the water, a little more green would make for a perfect holiday weekend. As Independence Day approaches, businesses tethered to Sacramento-area waterfronts – from boat dealers to raft rental outfits – are hoping that locals looking for some Fourth of July fun close to home will buoy their fortunes. "Nobody has money to buy boats," said Richard Herota, manager of Buck's Outboard Repair on 47th Avenue in Sacramento. But there are early signs that July Fourth may be a day to celebrate at Buck's, despite the sluggish sales. Repair jobs, though down from last year, are still solid. And business has picked up in the days before the holiday as boaters prepare for the long weekend, Herota said. "We were pretty busy this weekend. We've had a lot of last-minute customers – people got paid at the end of the month," Herota said. "They want to go to the lake, and they're staying close to home and enjoying what we have here in Sacramento." That's a common theme in today's tough economy. Vacationers will still have fun this holiday weekend, even if they're not traveling far to enjoy themselves. "Even tho
All Related

After NVIDIA's acknowledgment of mobile GPU breakdown (and denial that the faulty GPUs were in Apple products), Apple determined that many video failures in MacBooks were in fact NVIDIA's fault. Okay, they worked through that. But it seems NVIDIA has been taking Apple for granted, and displaying "arrogance" in its proposals for continuing a partnership. NVIDIA arrogant? A judge has lifted Mayfield's suspension, saying the NASCAR driver should be allowed to race. Two team owners won't put Jeremy Mayfield in their cars this weekend at Daytona International Speedway, one because of sponsor concerns and the other because Mayfield is "marked" following his legal battle with NASCAR. Mayfield faces a Thursday afternoon deadline to bring Mayfield Motorsports to Daytona in time to join the 45 other entrants. His indefinite suspension for a failed drug test was lifted by a federal judge Wednesday, allowing him to race this weekend. He still can bring his own No. 41 Toyota to the track, but the $5,005 late entry fee is daunting for the cash-strapped Mayfield. He said in an affidavit last week that he laid off 10 employees, borrowed money from family and had to sell personal assets to cover his living expenses. He's also being sued for more than $86,000 by Triad Racing Technologies for parts, pieces and chassis work that Mayfield allegedly owes the company. Mayfield said outside court Wednesday he would travel to Daytona, but wasn't sure in what capacity. His suspension covered both his roles as driver and owner of his car, and he wasn't sure he could put something together in time. Larry Gunselman and Tommy Baldwin, two owners who potentially could have given Mayfield a ride, said they wer
All Related
