Auditions: Upheaval in the Poetry Recital and Fancy Hat Society

Huguenot Community Players will hold auditions for the opening show of the 2010-1011 season Sunday and Monday, September 12 and 13, at 7pm, at Huguenot United Methodist Church, 10661 Duryea Drive, Richmond.
Written by Richmond playwright, Pat Walker. Director Alice Schreiner seeks two men, ages 30-60, seven women, ages 25-80, and one teenage girl 14-19. Performances November 11-14, 2010. No actors paid.

For further information contact:
Fred Schneider widfred@gmail.com or 651-1723
Alice Schreiner, director, at schreiner.alice@yahoo.com or 595-1971

PLOT SUMMARY: Some senior members of the “society” are planning their annual poetry recital and fancy hat parade, a simple enough project, one would think, until conflicts arise from a couple of fishermen and a teenage girl who’s flunking English. Sexism and ageism prove to be alive and well. And if that’s not enough, throw in a few stress-related maladies and a bit of audience participation!

Ann Bannon’s Classic Tales Spawned Off-Broadway Smash

The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, the off-Broadway smash-hit adaptation of Ann Bannon’s ground-breaking 1950s pulp novels, will open on Wednesday, September 15, at 8 pm at Richmond Triangle Players’ theater at 1300 Altamont Avenue in Richmond.

The Beebo Brinker Chronicles follows the lives and loves of four friends in pre-Stonewall Greenwich Village. Beth and Laura were secret lovers in college and still pine for each other. Before they can reunite, they find themselves entangled in a web spun by Beebo Brinker, a butch denizen of the underground bar scene, and Jack, a flamboyant fop with caustic wit.

The 2008 off-Broadway production was produced by Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, and drew rave reviews, in addition to a GLAAD Media Award. The New York Times called it “Fabulous!” and New York Magazine said “this colorful portrait of gay life in the Village startles with the truths it flashes.”

Richmond Triangle Players’ production will be directed by Noreen C. Barnes, acclaimed for her sensitive direction of last season’s Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, with set design by John Knapp, costume design by Derin White, and lighting design by K. Jenna Ferree. Alicia A. Ayoub is the stage manager.

Ann Bannon wrote six pulp fiction novels known as The Beebo Brinker Chronicles from 1957 to 1962. The books’ enduring popularity and impact on lesbian identity has earned her the title “Queen of Lesbian Pulp Fiction.”

Bannon was a young housewife trying to address her own issues of sexuality when she was inspired to write her first novel. Her subsequent books featured four characters that reappeared throughout the series, including her famous heroine, who came to embody the archetype of a butch lesbian.

The majority of her characters mirrored people she knew, but their stories reflected a life she did not feel she was able to live. Despite her traditional upbringing and married status, her novels defied conventions by addressing complex homosexual relationships.

While her books played a major role in shaping lesbian identity, Bannon was mostly unaware of their impact. She endured a difficult marriage for 27 years and, as she separated from her husband in the 1980s, her books were republished; she was stunned to learn of their influence on society. They are taught in Women’s and LGBT studies courses, and Bannon has received numerous awards for pioneering lesbian and gay literature.

RTP’s production features several performers well-known to its audiences, as well as some new faces. Emma Mason, who made a major impact on audiences as Eva in Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, plays the notorious Beebo Brinker. Matt Hackman, who recently appeared as Kippy in RTP’s sell-out production of Take Me Out, plays the dual roles of Charlie and Burr. Newcomers Heather Falks and Kerry McGee play the central roles of Beth and Laura, while Justin Amellio makes his RTP debut as Jack. Melissa Carroll-Jackson, who is playing Marcia, Lili and Nina, is known locally for her work as a speech and dialect coach with several companies, most notably Richmond Shakespeare.

After its opening on Wednesday, September 15 at 8 pm, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles will perform Thursday through Saturday evenings through October 9 at 8 pm, with two Sunday matinees at 4 pm on September 26 and October 3. Reserved seat tickets ($25 for Opening Night, Fridays and Saturdays; $20 for Thursdays and Sundays) can be purchased online at RTP’s web site at www.rtriangle.org or by calling the RTP Ticket hotline at 804-346-8113.

RTP’s theater at 1300 Altamont Avenue is a 4000-square foot performing arts facility accommodating flexible seating arrangements for up to 90 patrons. The building features fully ADA-compliant access and comfortable restrooms, as well as a generous bar, and catering capability, and will also be made available for cabaret performances and private events.

For more information, please contact managing director Philip Crosby at 804-342-7665 or by e-mail at Crosby@rtriangle.org.

This is the NYC of Ed Koch, when homeless slept on cardboard boxes in front of the abandoned Apollo theatre, Times Square was filled with three-card monte players, tall transvestite hookers, and midnight cowboys, and “Pac-Man” was a brand new video game.

NYtheatre.com called Taxi Stories “a vivid evocation of a now by-gone New York … when the city’s danger and unpredictability were part of its charm.”

The Irish Echo said Taxi Stories is “a lovely show, compassionate and realistic, created by a man who, clearly, hasn’t forgotten a single detail about life in the city … as honest as it is accurate.”

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9. Tickets are $12 for individuals, $10 for season subscribers, and $8 for students and RAPT members with ID.
Mr. O’Shea has been a featured teller/emcee for the last four years at the Los Angeles Storytelling Festival. His most recent TV and film credits include “The Office” and “Semi-Pro.”

He also is currently looking for WWII veterans who would like to have their memories recorded and copied on CD for free (as a tribute to Mr. O’Shea’s late father, a veteran of Patton’s 95th Infantry).
This multiple Tony Award-winning play is an American classic written by a renowned playwright who has spoken at the Firehouse and was the inspiration for its Festival of New American Plays.

“Bringing ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ to the Firehouse stage simultaneously extends the voice and influence of Edward Albee in Richmond and offers local audiences a fresh interpretation of a familiar and iconic production of both stage and screen,” said Carol Piersol, the Firehouse‘s founding artistic director.

In Virginia Woolf, associate history professor George and his wife Martha invite a new college professor and his wife to their house after a party. Martha is the daughter of the president of the college. Nick is a biology professor and Honey is his mousey, brandy-abusing wife. Once at home, Martha and George continue drinking and engage in relentless, scathing verbal and sometimes physical abuse in front of Nick and Honey. The younger couple is simultaneously fascinated and embarrassed but stay even when the abuse turns periodically towards them as well.

The play debuted on Broadway in 1962 and was so controversial due to the use of profanity and sexual themes for its time that the Pulitzer Prize advisory board overruled its drama committee’s recommendation and denied the playwright an award.

A highly-acclaimed film adaptation of the play was released in 1966. It was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Elizabeth Taylor as Martha, Richard Burton as George, George Segal as Nick and Sandy Dennis as Honey.

The Firehouse production is directed by Rusty Wilson and stars Jonathan Conyers, Larry Cook, Laine Satterfield, and Amy Sproul.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for students and RAPT members with ID.

Chesterfield Children’s Theatre has currently moved from its former location and although we are still going full force with our missions we have to downsize, and sell some scenery.
We have a pink hotel set that can be used as a hotel, Saloon, etc.
We used it in our production of Crazy for You, and part of the set for Cinderella.
You can repaint the set pieces for anything you need.

We are only asking $100 for all of the pieces, and just the lumber alone well exceed that cost if you were to buy new lumber. We want to see it go to another theatre company that can use it, not just a stranger needing firewood.

If your theatre is in the chester/colonial heights area we will deliver it for free.

Call CCT at 691-7235

*Included is walls with windows, a round hotel sign, columns, wall pieces, etc. to create the set. But individually you can use them for other things, like we just used 2 walls for Cinderella’s house and some columns for the castle,,, and didn’t need the rest of the hotel scenery……there’s so many things you can do with this. anyone can make an appointment to come see if, but if you don’t come see it and we take it to you, we would like serious inquiries only. thank you. $100 is a great deal for all this, we just don’t have storage space for it.
