Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword…

In Kiss of Frost, Gwen is starting to make a place for herself at Mythos Academy. She’s made a couple of friends and has a new trick up her sleeve thanks to her evolving Gypsy gift. I enjoyed this book more than the last simply because Frost was no longer all alone. High school is miserable enough to begin with, add in all of the horrible things that Gwen has been through and it becomes downright terrible. She at least deserves a shoulder to cry on so I was happy that she found a new BFF in Daphne. The fact that Frost makes a little headway with Logan certainly didn’t hurt either!

This series has a real epic feel to it which is probably in large part due to the fact that the story deals with gods and champions. As a result, every little thing that the characters do in these books feels important but Gwen herself seems to be the key. Especially after a Reaper proclaims: “Oh, we know all about you, Gwen Frost, and what you’re supposed to do.” All of a sudden, that weird Gypsy girl appears destined to save the world from chaos! Kiss of Frost really ups the stakes and defines this series’ story arc in a big way.

It really became apparent in this novel that Gwen’s gift is also at times, a curse. She flashes on her mother’s death in this installment and I can only imagine how painful that must have been for her. Not only that but the fact that she never forgets any of the memories she gleams from others meaning that those painful images will be with her for the rest of her life. Imagine having to watch your mother die over and over again. That’s a big burden to bare for anyone, let alone a seventeen year old girl. In spite of all the secrets she’s witnessed, I like that Gwen remains a genuinely good person at her core. Once again she does the right thing in a sticky situation even though it will probably come back to bite her (literally) in the butt with big Fenrir wolf teeth.

I’m enjoying the progression of Logan and Gwen’s relationship, as slow as it may be but that’s the Paranormal Romance reader in me talking. I have to keep reminding myself that this is how relationships are in high school; clumsy and awkward. The further I get in this series the more I notice how perfectly suited Jennifer Estep’s clean cut writing style is for YA. She captures the younger POVs beautifully and makes good use of teenagers’ rampant imaginations with her ominous statues and freaky carnival games.

Other than the bad guy being a little too predictable for my tastes, Kiss of Frost weaves an intricate web of mythology, magic and destiny that you won’t be able to resist getting caught up in.

But Pryce isn’t alone. He’s conjured another, darker villain from Vicky’s past. To stop them from destroying everything she loves, she’ll have to face her own worst fear—in the realm of the dead itself.

Darklands plays a dangerous game starting at its midpoint. Previous indications of Medieval influence crescendo as Victory-Vicky-Vick Vaughn does her bestest to prevent total world meltdown.

A lot of fresh air comes in with this addition to the series. Vic gets a new sidekick, although hardly helpful and, more often than not, a drain on her nerves. The endless prevarication concerning Kane – will he or won’t he and Vic become an item, will he or won’t he take center stage this go around – continues.

We never quite get to see enough of the werewolf side of things in this world as much as we are made aware of their proximity. Instead large doses of Medieval lore and Celtic mythology are fed to us. I am completely ok with this medicine. They can go ahead and trot out the IV when its elements are this well-developed and characterized.

It was quite a risk. That fork in the road at page one-sixty had me itching. Could another plane of existence be added to this already complicated three-ring urban zombie paranormal circus aka Boston that just keeps suffering for its resident, Victory? When’s the winning going to happen already?

I am prepared to patiently wait, wade, and flip through this developing prophecy so long as it stays this edgy, dangerous, and rife with failure. Our Victory has a long way to go if she even hopes to keep apprised of her cousin Pryce’s nefarious plottings and that is really the joy in following along, watching her fall, scrape, drag along, limp, and, eventually, with great difficulty, stride.

These developments have the potential for, at least, two more continuations. Shuffle yourself on over, ya paranormal junkie, and pick up this unfolding epic already! What’s it got to be in some old book or something? It’s got Shakespeare in it. Or, at least, a couple of lines swapped between Vicky and her six hundred year old vampiric roommate, Juliet (yes, that one).

Rabid 5: Vamp Web TV Series, New YA & More!

This week was a little quieter than last so I actually didn’t find my 5th item until late Thursday night. A lot of awesome covers were revealed though but seeing how this post is supposed to be about more than just pretty artwork I tried to limit myself to just one.

Here’s what caught my eye this week:

1- Morganville: The Web TV Series. Rachel Caine has launched a Kickstarter to fund a project to turn her hit Morganville Vampires YA books into a high quality web TV series. So far she still has a long way to go towards hitting her goal but if she’s successful I guess that I’ll have to read these books!

2- Sierra Dean posted an excerpt from Autumn, her new Young Adult series Dog Days made its debut earlier this week.

3 – Chloe Neill revealed the latest cover in her Chicagoland Vampire series, Wild Things, which is scheduled to hit shelves sometime in early 2014. I can’t wait for this one, it’s about the pack!

5 – Fifth Grave Past the Light audiobook excerpt. Macmillan Audio shared a snippet of Daynda Jones’ upcoming book. I personally adore Lorelei King as the narrator of this series and prefer listening to Charley Davidson over reading about her. I’ll definitely be checking this one out sooner rather than later.

Beauty and the Wolf Tour Stop: My Ten Favorite Werewolf / Vampire Movies by Marina Myles

Fairy tales that feature Prince Charmings who are werewolves, vampires, demons, and ghosts?? Yep…that’s what I write! The books in my Cursed Princes Series feature dashing but tortured heroes who find themselves trapped in an immortal existence.

Can they be saved? Maybe it’ll take the right heroine…

To celebrate the June 6th release of my book, BEAUTY AND THE WOLF, and the upcoming, December release of SNOW WHITE AND THE VAMPIRE (Book 2 in the Cursed Princes Series), I thought it would be fun to share my favorite werewolf and vampire movies.

Here we go!

My Ten Favorite Werewolf / Vampire Movies

	10 – Bad Moon (1996) Directed by Eric Red, starring Mariel Hemingway and Michael Paré. This intense movie tells the tale of a man struggling to hide his dark, wolf secret. The transformation scenes are pretty cool—and in the end an unlikely character is this poor fellow’s last hope for reversing his blood-lusting curse.
	09 – Interview with a Vampire (1994) Feature film based on the 1976 megabook by Anne Rice, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The story centers around a sensually dangerous vampire named Louis de Pointe du Lac (or Lestat) that spills the details of his 200-year-old life to a reporter. Cruise proves to be a surprisingly ominous Lestat – and the film really captures the shadowy ambiance of 18th-19th century New Orleans and Europe.
	08 – An American Werewolf In London (1981) A comedy-horror movie written and directed by John Landis. Scary and funny at the same time, this movie had audiences flocking to theaters when it was released. It opens with two, young American men as they embark on a backpacking trip through Europe. When they venture deep into the moors at night, they’re attacked by a werewolf. One of the men dies—and the other lives to wreak havoc on London.
	07 – Ginger Snaps Back : The Beginning (2004) This sequel traces the mysterious sisters back to 19th century Canada where they take refuge in a Traders’ Fort. The tension builds and the fort eventually becomes the target of savage werewolves. The film has great visual effects as well as a fascinating, stylized aura.
	06 – The Fearless Vampire Killers, or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck (1967) This comedy-horror film follows the story of young Alfred who assists bumbling vampire killer, Professor Abonsius. When the most powerful vampire in the land captures a beautiful tavern girl Alfred has fallen for, Alfred and Professor Abonsius try their best to rescue the girl from the Count’s castle high in the mountains. The movie features director/actor Roman Polanski and his wife, Sharon Tate, in happier times.
	05 – Van Helsing (2004) Directed by Stephen Sommer, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. Vampires, werewolves, and Hugh Jackman all rolled into one movie? How could I NOT put this film on my list?! Once again, Van Helsing is after his arch- nemesis, Dracula, but this film pays homage to the horror films of days gone by in an over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek way. What do you think of its surprisingly touching ending?
	04 – The Lost Boys (1987) American teenage horror film, starring Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, and Corey Haim. Tells the story of two Arizona brothers who come to California after their parents’ divorce. They soon realize that the young boys of the town are disappearing one by one, and when they investigate, they end up battling a group of vicious, teenage vampires. (Loved Kiefer Sutherland in this movie!)
	03 – New Moon: Twilight Saga (2009) This isn’t really my third favorite werewolf/vampire movie. I just like the poster.
	02 – Dracula (1992) Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder. This film features a charismatic Dracula who oozes sensuality and seduces without apology. It also gives us a glimpse into Dracula’s tragic past—which explains why he is so evil. (Fun fact: My husband and I saw this movie on our first date!)
	01 – Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups) (2001) French horror film directed by Cristophe Gars, starring Samuel le Bihen, Mark Dacascos, and Monica Belluci. I think this movie has it all! Drama, intrigue, interesting characters, and amazing scenery. What’s more, it’s based on a true story about the Beast of Gévaudan that terrorized France in the mid 18th century. Heck…what can be scarier than that? (Helpful hint: try and get your hands on the extended version. It contains some great swash buckling scenes and a martial arts sequence by Mark Dacascos.)

My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I’m determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why – especially since I should have been the one who died…

In the face of months of separation from Gin Blanco while I hungrily await the next Elemental Assassin installment I decided to give Jennifer Estep’s Young Adult books a whirl. I’m not a huge reader of this genre but every so often I venture out of my comfort zone and Touch of Frost turned out to be an excellent choice. The age of the characters may have changed but Estep’s terrific world-building, unique magics and action driven plot still remain at the forefront of this story which are the main reasons I enjoy her writing so much anyway so the fact that this tale unfolds in high school quickly became a non-issue. Besides, even I enjoy some good mean girl drama just so long as the characters are mature and Gwen Frost is indeed a very grown-up 17 year old.

I like that this series features Valkyries, Amazons and Spartans instead of the typical vamps and weres; it made the Mythos Academy universe captivating from the get-go. Instead of looking for the one trait that will set her paranormals apart from the crowd, Estep goes completely off the reservation by incorporating Norse mythology instead. I enjoyed learning about these creatures through Gwen’s eyes because, coming from a “normal” school, she was as skeptical about their impossible natures as I was. It’s hard to avoid information dumps in the first installment of a series but Jennifer cleverly disguises them as lessons in Frost’s classes which I found much more enjoyable than the standard format.

At first glance, the plot seems relatively straightforward: a girl is murdered and Gwen’s on a mission to find the killer. However, the story quickly morphs into so much more and also helps set the tone for future installments in this series. I appreciated the fact that amidst all of the drama, the school setting never gets forgotten. Frost may have bigger fish to fry but she still has to write that darned myth-history essay. I find that a lot of the time in Young Adult fiction the author forgets that her characters are still supposed to attend class and do homework. This is a personal pet peeve of mine so I’m glad that Estep didn’t make the same mistake that I’ve encountered countless times before.

Gwen Frost is an easy character to like; she’s feisty, intelligent and just an all-around good person. The most popular girl in school gets murdered and none of her classmates even bat an eye. I like that she cares about everyone, even the mean girl. She learns a few very important life lessons in this book which is another pivotal element to a good story in my opinion. I have no use for whiny characters that don’t evolve over the course of a series. I think Gwen definitely has potential and I enjoyed witnessing the first phase of her transformation from “that Gypsy girl” to something more.

Gwen is definitely no Elemental Assassin but I loved Estep’s little hat tip to the Pork Pit; I didn’t expect any mention of her Urban Fantasy series in this book so I couldn’t help but crack a little smile at the mention of BBQ. Vic was a lot of fun too and a great example of an element that’s cute in a Young Adult setting but would be absolutely ridiculous in a more grown-up tale. Touch of Frost is proof that a talented author can win you over with a great story no matter the genre.

I should start off by saying that I actually have TWO WISHLISTS when it comes to books; I have one that’s housed on this site that includes all of the upcoming titles releasing within the coming year that I plan on reading, either because they are debut authors that caught my eye, werewolf novels or they are long running series who’s latest installment I’m anxiously anticipating. These are also the books that I am most likely to request review copies of so I keep track of my galleys and ARCs here too.

My GoodReads Wishlist is more of a mix of the above books plus my personal want-to-read titles but I don’t actually own any of these novels. Yet. So this list is basically comprised of every single book that I would like to read in the near future but haven’t acquired yet. All of the books that are currently sitting on my shelves and/or eReaders can be found on my GR to-read list. My system probably isn’t for everyone but it works for me!

I’d like to start off this review by stating that this novel is nothing like Twilight so whatever hang-ups you may have about Stephenie Meyer’s original series should be set aside. As an avid reader, I’m a firm believer in that “the book is always better” saying so when I found out that there was a The Host movie in the works I couldn’t resist bumping this novel to the top of my to-be-read pile. Saying that I’m glad I did would be a gross understatement; I was glued to my ear buds from the moment I first pressed play!

The Host is unlike anything that I have ever read thanks to its emotionally complex story, unique POV and unlikely love triangle. This is one of those books that when you’re done reading it, you’ll need to take a moment to let it all sink in. I really enjoyed the two-characters-for-the-price-of-one aspect of this novel; it gave a whole new meaning to the “we” and “our” possessive pronouns. In this instance, instead of talking about a group of people the author is referring to the two minds in one body which made for one heck of an interesting first person POV. Kate Reading does an excellent job of sounding “other” while narrating from Wanderer’s perspective and human while reading from Melanie’s. Her voice is mesmerizing and definitely helped to make this 23 hour audiobook just fly by.

Normally, love triangles are one of my biggest pet peeves in fiction but Meyer’s is so outside of the box that it’s impossible not to get caught up in the characters’ emotions. Imagine having two people inside of your head who are in love with different guys! Not only that, but Wanderer and Mel’s psyches become so closely intertwined over time that it’s a challenge (even for them) to determine which feelings belong to whom. Throw some good old fashioned jealousy into the mix and you’re left with one incredibly complicated predicament!

A lot of really interesting questions surface in this book but the one that I personally found the most fascinating was what it means to be human. In the beginning the answer is pretty clear cut: humans = good and souls = bad. However, as the story progresses that line becomes progressively blurrier. Does the answer simply come down to a matter of genetics or is it a person’s actions that determine their humanity? By the end of this book I was surprised by how much my opinion of Wanderer had shifted. Although, it’s important to note that she’s not a typical soul so even though she won me over, the rest of her race did not.

The Host is an emotionally charged story that redefines the classic love triangle and take the first person POV to a whole new level. After finishing this novel the first thing that came to my mind was how in the heck are they ever going to make a movie out of this? I have a sneaky suspicion that as usual, the book will be better than the film.

Where Demons Fear to Tread will please anyone who with a short sampling intelligence, like me, hears a pseudo Italian/Jamaican accent say the word ‘angel’ when he reads ‘angel’ and a frustrated white-collar psychopath say ‘demon’ when he reads ‘demon’. It is too much fun seeing how pure the ‘angel’ must be as versus her ‘demonic’ love-interest (that isn’t a spoiler is it?).

I mean things do get hot and heavy by page twenty or so. Then it sort of lays off the gas so that the two of them, Serena and Julian, can get to know each other. By the time, they do intermingle it still seems like both their characters take 180 flips, but that’s half the fun, no?

Regardless one can say for a surety the morality of these characters is not simply black and white. In terms of scenery, the Los Angeles and Las Vegas set pieces, fairly breezy on the one hand and excessively beepy and nocturnal on the other, are not mere backdrops, and if they are, they are provided lavish detail, so they are, at least, lavish backdrops. I also enjoyed somewhat long-winded and, therefore, controversial back-stories, which, sure, were just laid out there, but, at least, it took a while for them to appear.

Perhaps the continual mention of the recyclability of souls could have been more a point of departure, or even a jumping-off point for the reveal of even more past lives. Could the angel have been a demon before she was human, could the demon have been an angel before he was human, etc., etc.? Having already read the sequel, I can confirm that characterizations will continue to complexify, but I won’t mention as regarding who. It was a provocative decision to characterize whoever it was.

I’ve been struggling to find a new weekly feature for the blog and have decided to give a top 5 list a try. I scour the internet daily for bookish news about my favourite series, authors and werewolves anyway so I figured that if you follow me, we probably have similar reading interests and I might as well turn by obsessive stalking into a post to help you guys stay in the loop (and to make me feel better).

Here’s what caught my eye this week:

1 & 2- Chloe Neill revealed the first chapter of her upcoming release, Biting Bad, the 8th installment in the Chicagoland Vampires series, out on August 6th. You can read it HERE. She also announced that Jeff & Fallon will be getting an e-special titled Howling for You scheduled to release sometime in January 2014.

Keri Author’s talent as an author is undeniable but after the last two Dark Angels books I’ve kind of felt like she’s been stretching this series’ story arc past its breaking point in order to sell more installments. There’s nothing I hate more than feeling like I’m being taken advantage of as a reader. I seriously contemplated quitting these novels altogether but that’s always easier said than done. At least Darkness Unmasked sets the expectation on page 3 that this book is NOT going to be about Risa’s quest to find the keys. I’m glad that Arthur just came out and said that because it allowed me to enjoy the story as the author intended rather than agonize about what it should have been.

Several loose ends and unanswered questions that have been hounding me since Darkness Unbound finally get resolved. For the first time in several installments I actually feel like Arthur made some headway where this series’ main story arc is concerned which is odd considering the aforementioned declaration made on page 3. However, you won’t hear me complaining! I found it weird that after all of this time, Risa’s mother’s murder investigation resurfaces. It was what started Jones’ crazy adventure but I had just assumed that it was a means to an end, a way to rope Risa into working for Hunter. I never really expect the killer to be found. But lo and behold, Keri Arthur gives her heroine the justice she’s been craving AND finds a key in the process! Things are finally starting to come together in the Dark Angels series.

Lucian, the Aedh I love to hate is back for another round and he’s especially loathsome in this installment. I always knew that there was something off about him and now that his secret is out, his depravity knows no bounds. I thought that Arthur took things a little too far where he’s concerned and I wasn’t a fan of Risa and Ilianna’s reactions, or rather lack thereof. I have a pretty thick skin with regards to violence in fiction but I draw the line at rape. I can even understand its necessity to a story line in certain instances but the way that Arthur downplays it was unacceptable to me. It almost felt like she was condoning it at times and that just didn’t sit right with me. Luckily, these events happen towards the end of this book and were the only parts that I really disliked.

I loved Azriel in this installment, heck, I love him in every book but I especially loved him in this one. It’s taken him a long while to reach this point but he’s now bending Reaper rules left, right, and center for Risa. I’ve really enjoyed watching his character evolve from a cold, calculating soul collector into a more humanized version of himself. He makes the ultimate sacrifice in this book only to have it blow-up in his face and leave readers with one heck of a cliffhanger. November and Darkness Splintered have never felt so far away!

Thank you Keri Arthur for finally delivering the Dark Angels installment that I’ve been waiting for! There may be hope for Risa and her quest for the keys yet! Darkness Unmasked is jam packed with jaw dropping revelations, blistering action and enough eight-legged creepy crawlies to give you nightmares. You definitely won’t want to miss this one!

You know what they say; the third time is the charm and that definitely holds true with Shapeshifted, book three in Cassie Alexander’s Edie Spence series. In the previous two installments Edie was a noob in the paranormal world, struggling to make sense out of vampires and werewolves, but in this novel she finds herself shunned, back among humans and longing for a taste of the crazy she was forced to leave behind.

The first half of this novel had me scratching my head wondering when the vamps were going to show up; the story read like your everyday hospital drama which wasn’t at all what I expected. However, once I experienced my little light bulb moment at about the midway point, I couldn’t help but marvel at Alexander’s clever deception. The paranormal had been right in front of my face the whole time and I didn’t even see it!

Needless to say, going from working at Y4 to a sleep clinic is like night and day for Edie. Well, not really because she worked the night shift at both jobs but you get my meaning. Anyway, to say that she was bored watching others sleep would be a gross understatement so what does she do? Goes out and applies at a clinic in gang territory. Werewolves vs. hoodlums; same difference, right? I couldn’t help but shake my head at her because this girl has a serious death wish. Although, I did admire her reasons and determination to save her dying mother.

When Ti shows up I did cringe a little, I’m not going to lie. The prospect of Edie reuniting with her ex zombie boyfriend worried me. The ick factor alone was enough to dampen my enjoyment of Nightshifted and I had no desire for a repeat performance in this installment. I did do a little happy dance when it was looking like he might actually be the bad guy in this book but of course, nothing is ever that straight forward in Urban Fantasy.

I missed the characters from the previous installments in this series; very few of them make appearances in this book and the ones that do play only minimal roles. The ending did lead me to believe that Edie may find herself reunited with her friends at Y4 in Deadshifted but I guess only time will tell on that one! Shapeshifted has all of the same elements that I enjoyed so much in the first two books; a level-headed yet fun heroine, intense medical drama and unique paranormal mythology. But it was Cassie Alexander’s superior storytelling that transformed this installment into a five star read.
