Rachi began her primary one in September1st. Po Leung Kuk Camoes Tan Siu Lin Primary School is the school that she got admitted to. Since her first day at school, she has as always shown eagerness to wake up early and go to school.

Transition period from kindergarten to primary student:
She has more homework to do and more books to study. And it means less time for her to play and visit her friends. However, she is comping with all the new changes that life has to offer. Sometime, she says! "My life is changing." Indeed, she is right. She has less time for her favourite cartoons and tv programs and in the park.

Tooth

13th July 2015, Tuesday morning, you were ready to go to your kindergarten. You pointed at your teeth and said, "Mommy, my tooth is moving." That was the morning that you showed your moving tooth to mommy and papa. We both were awed and said, " you are going to have new teeth. You baby teeth are shedding.' You were so happy to learn that as you knew that shedding baby teeth meant you would be having stronger adult teeth. You were then 5 years, 10 months and 8 days old.

After that you kept moving and pulling your tooth. You sat down to watch tally, your finger would be flickering around your mouth. Inwardly, I was worried that you may cry of pain as I remembered my experience when my teacher then in primary school, used a string to pull off my loosened teeth. It was a very painful experience. Rest teeth how I was able to pull them off, but that particular moment was very frightening, my eyes were with tears and I felt a pang of agony as I would have dared to slap her.

Day by day, your tooth was loosened and on 17th July, after 4 days, you were sitting on the edge of the bed when you kept moving it. Papa helped you to move gently and I was horrified wondering you would end up in tears. I was sitting beside you two but not looking at the pulling process. You papa gave a soothing pull and told you not to panic. He said, "See, there is already a tooth under this. We need to take it out now. If we don't pull this out now, your new tooth will have no space to grow properly, you will end up bad teeth." You obeyed him. And in few minutes later, papa meticulously pulled off your tooth. It was 15:35 and papa had to go to work at 16:00. It was only 25 minutes before papa left for work.

You were excited and asked us to put the tooth under the pillow at night and take it away after putting a dollar coin. You wanted papa to be a tooth fairy. I insisted since a fairy is a lady, mommy will be a tooth fairy.

You cleaned the tooth and put inside a container. You asked us to congratulate you on your safely coming off the tooth. You ended up cleaning regularly for a week and stopped since I told you cleaning too much will break.

Kindergarten to Primary

Year 2015 has been a transitory period for a five years old toddler, from graduating a kindergarten to being admitted to a Primary School.

You graduated on 17th June 2015. Your kindergarten Hong King Bethel Gideon has chosen a ceremonial place in heart of Kowloon Bay in KCB, just opposite to Mega Box. Dad and I were there on this milestone day where we sat taking photos and recording videos. As an emotional mom, my eyes were filled with on tears. You and your fellow classmates, dressed in white gown and black hat walked on a aisle marching and waving hands. I couldn't control my weepy eyes, as I began dabbing tears with tissue paper, I missed recording a video.

You guys marched on to a decorated stage where stood school principal and other officials to welcome you.

Dressed in uniform Little Bees performed dance and song. There was also a drama where K2 students made a mess as they played. They threw rubbish, paper, containers everywhere. You, a little bee with other friends from K3 who were trained in Little Bee walked to the stage and made spotless clean. You threw strewn rubbish on a rubbish bin and tidied up. You as a little bee were well trained by your Little Bee trainer Ms. Yip. You received numerous certificates:

2: Chinese Story Competition
3: English Singing Competition
4: Chinese Siging Competition
5: Punctuality Award

You along with your classmate stood proud as you boldly handshook with your principal and other officials. They congratulated you!

Photo session took place afterwards. Then at 7pm, we were escorted to have dinner at Mega Box Siu Shun Village Cuisine restaurant.

The menu had several items. You all received many gifts and vouchers from bookstore Popular. You and your friends were happy as you played and laughed.

Your school distributed your assessment card on 11th July morning. Ms. Wong said you had done well. She commended that you are willing to learn, friendly and smart. Since we moved to Lok Fu on Novenber 2014, we transferred you to this school. You went to Jordan Pak Hoi Kindergarten until K2. This Kei Tin was a totally new school and with new atmosphere. All were Chinese and language of instruction was Chinese. At first your dad and me panicked but you were relaxed. The greatest achievement within this few months was you became fluent in Chinese. It was one of my contendentment stage. You are friendly and there was no problem for you to make friends. You are like kid who approaches first and extends hands of frienship. Mommy and daddy are both proud of you.

Rachi who was playing with Neon, came running to me and said, ' Mommy, come I will show you someone who pushed me.'
'Who did? Show me!' I hold her hand and followed her...
There were bunches of girls and boys standing.
She pointed,' He is the one.'
I went near to him who was around 4 years. 'Did you push her?'

No answer came.
But a loud stern voice came from the mass, 'He is just a baby.'
My eyes and ears followed to that loud voice. The shout came from a girl clad in a frock(princess embossed on it), perhaps couple of years older than Rachi.
One girl in black suit, the biggest and perhaps the oldest in the group put her hands together and said, "Sorry!'ter what his age is, he should not push other. You should all play without hurting one another. And if

I felt both sorry and angry with the girl who tried defending the boy. I went near to the girl and tried to speak politely saying that no matsomebody unintentionally pushes or knocks the other, he must still say sorry.'
That girl, the one on the frock, still adamant, was not willing to say sorry for what she said nor she was convincing the boy to apologise Rachi. She further went talking rudely, 'I don't know what you are saying. He is just a baby.'

Another pretty girl of 7~8 years murmured something in urdu. God knows what she meant. The girl in the black suit kept saying sorry and sorry on behalf of other two girls while those two kept arguing with me. Manju who was surprised to see those girls said, 'Oh my god, look at these girls they don't even need their parents to take care of them. They can fight and defend for themselves.' Their parents were nowhere to be seen. They wouldn't listen at all. Everytime I tried to say something, the girl in the frock said,'I don't know what you are saying.' The girl of that age was mocking with me. It agitated me so much that I was angry so I said, 'Where are your parents?'
She hesitated a bit and said, 'In America.'She was still mocking with me.
The other translated to me saying not to tell theirs'parents. There were about 8 of them while two were arguing with me and defending the boy and the eldest girl apologizing me.

I thought it was too much from them, so I raised my voice in order to frighten a bit. 'Do you know the police?' There was silence. Now the mass began to scatter. And to the girl in black suit I said that I was only kidding.

Oh my god, it was very difficult dealing with them. Firstly, they were very stubborn. Secondly, they wouldn't listen. Thirdly, they wouldn't apologise. Fourthly, they wouldn't stop arguing with me. And the most difficult part was whatever I said they just ignored. I agree that I am no one for them but in terms of seniority, shouldn't they at least listen or apologise or at least be a little frightened?

On the contrary, what could be theirs'ignorances when their parents are ignorant themselves? What could we expect from the children whose parents could not guide, teach them, motivate them and pin point their wrongs? What more could we expect from children whose parents are not their role models?

Apart from parenting styles, friends and environment also play an enormous role on their behaviours and attitudes.
Eventually, it is parents afterall to shape up a child into a healthy, disciplined and learned individual.

On occasion of Tihar 2071

After having checked my 'to do list', I had a last item to be crossed out. So with an aim to complete my last task, I scurried to P1 store. This Nepalese provisional store has all kinds of things from dalle khursani to various types of lentils and so on. Although lentils are supplied by Pakistani wholesaler in Hong Kong.

Due to Nepalese festive occasion Tihar, 'the festival of light' this shop P1 has imported many things from Nepal that may not be available in other Nepalese provisional stores. The shop's entrance is hung with aromatic sayepatriko mala. The shorter sayepatri mala cost me $50 per lung. The shoppers are flocked in to buy mala, stuff for puja, sapta rangi tika, selrotis, sweets etc. The ambience there gives me some kind of homey vibe. Some ladies are bargaining for the items. The price of sayapatri has gone up by 10.
The middle- aged lady who takes care of the shop and cashing up seems moody. Yesterday she was arguing with two baiyaas.
I overheard them, she said,'I don't understand English.'
One bhaiya said, 'So what language are you talking then?'
She raised her voice angrily,'Get out, tumne merah dimaag kharav kiya.'
Bhaiya laughed and said, 'Terah dimaag hey to dimaag kharav karunga.'
After they were gone she was complaining how those bhaiya came everyday, bought one or two items, sometime nothing and only talked too much. She grumbled and grumbled.

Today as I was about to pay for my malas, she said, 'Good that nani, you bought these today. It would have been gone by tomorrow.' I nodded.
A man on twenty who was standing beside me said, 'There will be so many in bhaiyaa's. Not too worry.'
She angrily said,'There's malas are not real. Theirs' do not smell so fresh like these. You know what, these malas are not ordinary ones. They are taken to Pashupatinath temple so as to get blessings for the people who wear. '
The man argued, ' Pashupati chahi hoina Guheshwori ma chahi pujerah lyaayeko hola.' I smiled at their petty squabble and walked away with my shopping bags.

And I have often seen her debating. Some people are such that they can't help themselves from debating.

This album "Baaldeep" was recorded between 1993-1994. It was recorded with an aim to inspire children, then myself a student of class 8. Ms. Jamuna Pradhan from Darjeeling was our hostel in-charge and she herself wrote and composed the songs. There are 8 songs including Nepali and English songs. The songs were recorded at Chhauni, oops I could not recall the name of the studio where we spent some time recording. My fellow co-singers Yan Kyi, Kshetri Maheshwori, Munu Shahi, Do Mas and some other junior girls from Ananda Kuti Vidyapeeth actively participated and sang merrily. I hope you have not forgotten the hardships and memorable moments while practicing the songs. During these recording and practicing periods, we sacrificed our classes and other activities.

I hope this song will remind you more about this album and the remaining songs. I am grateful to my husband, Rabin Rai, who helped me to convert the audio tape into CD. The listeners will have to bear pauses and music breakdown in some stages.

The one with the loudest voice is ME.

About Relationship

Nisha moved in our house a year ago. An year later moved in her pet. He is not an ordinary dog. She spoon feeds him, bathes him with shampoo, plays a ball throwing and catching game with him.They sleep in a same room andsometimes on the same bed. They both wake up and go to bed at same time. At 6:30 am both get up to lighten their bladders and go back to sleep again until 7:30am. He follows where ever his caretaker goes. When Nisa leaves for work, she feeds him whatever we eat, hugs and kisses him. Around 8 pm, he looks her path and stays looking until he sees her and then begins to bark uncontrollably. He runs down to the first floor and waits her arrival. He wags his tail, sits on her laps, jumps, and both indulge into some sort of unconditional bond. Nisa talks about how she missed him when she was at work. When I saw their love for one another, I was awed. What a relationship people can build with animals!

Mummy and Puppy

Puppy is a name of a Japanese breed dog that my sister-in-law owns. She has tamed him since Puppy was 3 months old and now he is about to be 4 years. She is like a mommy to him and he is a baby to her. Nisa once said, "I can't imagine my life without him.'
How about your husband? I enquired
And she laughed it away.

My mom is a person who dislikes a dog. She fears that the hair will get into the food and ultimately into our bodies. At first she did not allow Puppy to enter the kitchen and the living room. My brother couldn't convince her. That's why Puppy moved in a year later after her owner.

A vet came for a regular check-up. Seeing the vet, Puppy ran into the kitchen and hid under the table. Nisa kissed, cuddled and massaged him. Though there was denial on his face, Nisa finally convinced him.Puppy got injected, and Nisa was in tears. She felt for him.

Bathing their baby

Puppy became mom's companion when Nisa was out. During Nisa's absence, mom's obligation became to feed Puppy and take care of him. Puppy followed her where ever mom went and tried to get into the kitchen when he was hungry. Puppy became mommy's new companion. Ultimately, she had to give in her prejudice.

Such a bond could exist between a dog and a human. I had only seen on movies and read on books. But it's very real, very near and it's in front of me. If a person wants, if a person tries, he or she can build an affection with an animal. I reckon why he or she cannot build a affectionate relationship with other human if one intends.

A preschooler and her parents sat next to me. She was clad in school uniform. As soon as her parents settled down, the little girl hurried to a nearby book shelf and a little later came running carrying a thick book. She excitedly sat on a green chair, opened the book and murmured. Perhaps she must be reading on her own, i.e., baby language.

Fascinated by a picture, she asked mom, 'What is this?'

'A snake.'

In a loud voice, the girl shrieked, 'Ouch, big.'

Other readers were alarmed by the little one's reaction. Her mom looked around apologetically, and said, 'Quiet! Shh...'

'I want another' said a girl still loudly, not paying attention to her mom. She slammed close the book and ran to get another book. For sometime I was annoyed, and at the same time I was enjoying her activities. I looked at the girl frequently. But she was oblivious. Occasionally, her mom glanced at me perhaps guiltily. I smiled, a gesture to convey 'it's all right, after all she is little'.

She made several trips to the book shelf giggling and talking to herself. Finally she pulled a red chair this time and sat down. She opened the book.

'I will read you, okay!' mom said.

'Okay!'

Mom began to read for her. She was listening to her mother and suddenly she said, ' Stop, shh..You are noisy, mommy!' She closed the book, carried it and ran to put the book on the shelf.

Her mom's eyes met with mine and we both smiled.

I was less into my books but more into that little girl. It reminded me of my girl when she was in K1.

7th Anniversary

Best people

Among the close ones, we celebrated our 7th anniversary in Kangan Restaurant. It was 9th May 2007, we tied the knot to hold each other's hands and we have been holding one another for the past seven years. Sometime there were difficult times, situations that tested our courage and our unity. We both were brave enough to overcome those difficulties. So, here we are today, our love and devotion for one another are heightening. With our patience and perseverance, we have been able flip those negative aspects into positive angles. We have learned that whatever happens, happens for good.

Iruna : An inspiring youth

Iruna Rana , a confident soul with a beautiful mind and intellectual thought, was born in Pokhara to the Magars parents. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Management from Apex College, Kathmandu,

Nepal

in 2011. Her parents were living and working in Hong Kong since 2003. Consequently, after her graduation, she moved to join them. In the beginning, like many other new comers, she was engaged in odd jobs, working in cafes and restaurants, but she yearned to pursue her further studies.

As a saying goes "Nothing stops to a willing heart." Currently, she is a part-time student in Hong Kong University, doing her Masters degree in Education. And at the same time working as a Research Assistant in the Education department. For over an year now, she has been fulfilling the duties of a Research Assistant in HKU.

As a Research Assistant, she has to deal mainly with two types of projects. Primarily the projects include providing supports to Designated Primary and Secondary schools. This program is called School Support Programs(SSP). Research assistants are often required to visit the schools and intensive supports are given to these schools to enhance the learning and teaching of the non-Chinese speaking students, particularly in learning of the Chinese language.

So far, she has visited to Sir Ellis Kadoorie Secondary School (West Kowloon), Delia Memorial School(Broadway), Pat Heung Central Primary School and Bethel High School. Not all experiences are sweet for her, she recalls her bad experience while visiting to one of the schools where the majority students were Nepalese and only one or two were of other nationals. Everyone spoke Nepali, she was flabbergasted and at the same time bothered by the students attitudes and their inability to pay attention to their teachers. A negative impression towards them enveloped her. She worries and says "If they continue with their current behaviors, they will not be able to get admission in higher levels."

And not all experiences are bad either, she gets excited when she talks about Salina, a Nepali student, who is proficient in Chinese language and by far no means less to the locals. I am relieved to learn at least one positive vibe about our Hong Kong students.

Speaking further, Iurona continues, " Sometimes we introduce project which includes Teaching Cantonese to the parents. It is sad to see parents' reluctance to such classes. We have programs and projects for ethnic minorities, for our very own people to participate and take benefits, but there are no parents participation at all. Without parents participation on these vital topics, with no knowledge and awareness, how can they instill in their children's' minds the importance of acquiring languages or knowledge?" There is a tone of disappointment when she expresses her views.

Apart from her studies and full time work, she also contributes to Ethnic Weekly. Moreover, she worked for Ethnic Voice Radio Program, Community Involvement Broadcasting Service (CIBS) which programmed 13 episodes each with a different theme such as employment, housing, culture, food, school dropouts amongst students belonging to Ethnic communities, etc.

She is disappointed with the Nepali social organizations which do not act on behalf of all Nepalese, rather Nepalese community is divided into vast number of organizations formed on a basis of kinship, locality and casts. "If we think and form organizations according to these criteria, how can we all be united when we have so many differences in dialects, castes, districts, etc? If we cannot integrate with our country men, how can we integrate with others?", she poses a very thoughtful question.

She believes that partying in India Club and barbequing in Monkey Hill and Tai Mo Shan are just the excuses for getting boozed and wasting valuable time. "Instead why not integrate parents by holding meetings on education, story telling, essays and poetry recitation, tours and musical events for children? Celebrate Dashain not only with a motive to eat, wear new clothes and get money from the elders. Make the festival memorable by educating young generation about it's underlying principles by drama, playing quizzes, etc. and letting youngsters learn more about it."

She believes that the government is working to help ethnic minorities to integrate in the society. There are several facilities and services access to ethnic minorities, we need to grab the opportunities and enhance our learning skills and make our livelihoods better.

"Any suggestions to youngsters?" I asked. She reminiscences about her schooling days in

Nepal

when everything was written on a blackboard. Still schools and colleges are deprived of facilities. In contrary,
Hong Kong is international country, the melting pot of Asia. Those who grow up here and gets through schooling and universities are fortunate souls. They should create a good environment for their future generation. Let's say in a decade or two later we will be proud to see our people integrating and climbing the ladder of successes.

I was enchanted by a young scholar's thoughts and experiences so much that time passed so quickly . It was over an hour and her phone had rung twice already. The call was from someone seeking her help with some paper work so we said good bye to each other. On my way back home, I was feeling happy and hopeful about her, not all our youth in Hong Kong are losing direction but some are setting example by leading.

anything that appeals her. She imitates in no time.

Chinese New Year

The year 2013 came with lots of hustles, Renu had received her assignments and deadline from her uni. I was busy preparing for my CCNA exam after passing JNCIA.Besides we have made quite a number of friends during these times, so spent lot of time in socializing and dining out. Rachida, in the other hand, showed remarkable growth in her physical and mental status.

Rachi is so much into cooking, she watches cooking shows on youtube for hours and has set up her own kitchen with cabinet drawer and her kitchen toys. She sometimes pretends to run her own cooking shows. She serves mock food and we have to pretend to eat/drink and say "yummie".

Rachi also has learnt a lot of Chinese by now. She can sing a number of chinese songs taught in her school. She is the best in her batch in singing, even the teachers and the principal say that. She really has an aptitude for dancing and singing. As for the studies, she now can write A-Z capital letters, confusing some of them, which we believe is good for her age(Specially, when we learnt that at double of her age)..

At KP

Rachi most of the time is calm and peaceful. But sometimes she kicks fight with Renu, because she resists to her requests and activity. She starts calling "naughty Renu" and seeks papa's help. She says "you are No mama and papa is yes papa". But whenever she wakes up and doesn't she mama, she starts wailing "mama". During her deep sleep, Renu likes to disturb her by asking "how much you love mama", she replies "this much" with her hands stretched even in her deep sleep.

Rachi's friends circle is Suzane, Numa, Neon, Sezna, Sahyog. She plays with them in the park after school. Along with the children, parents also have became friends to each other. Somebody always brings snacks for all the children by turn, although there is no agreement as such.

Rachi has learnt some bad words in Nepali like "saale kutta, saale, etc." definitely from her school mates. We have been worried about it and have been dealing with her and hope we can stop her from using such words. It's very difficult to filter children's learning at this stage when they are starving to learn.

-She likes to draw and loves to engage in Art Work.
- She calls herself a Panda Girl, this is because she looks like a panda when she wears her black/white woolen hat.
- When she is out shopping, she wants to buy whatever her eyes see.
- She says, "Milk makes you white, coffee makes you black. Mummy and papa, please do not drink coffee."
- She enjoys watching cooking programs such as Master's Chef, Mom's cooking, World Kitchen, Poh's Kitchen, etc.
- She thinks that black colored food makes people black.
- When mom is about to fall asleep while studying, she gestures to get up and study.
- She says, "Rabin and Renu marry, Rachi in mummy's tummy and now big Rachi."
- If she finds opened packets of biscuits, chips or empty juice bottles, she questions," Who ate it or drank it?"
- She acts like a teacher and asks us to read.
- She knows comparison, for instance, she is thin and he is fat.
- She can make two ways conversations and answers if anything asked.
- She uses the scraps from vegetables to make art work or decorations.
- She designs and makes dresses for her toys and also for her.
