I tried a recipe for lunch today that was delicious! The kids and gobbled until it was gone and then asked for more. It’s an interesting combo, but really fabulous.

One package frozen raw deveined shrimp (14 ounces)

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp paprika

1 bay leaf

1/3 large seedless watermelon, diced

1 avacado

1/3 cup orange juice

1 Tbsp vinegar

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp honey

Fill large sauce pan with water. Add salt, cinnamon, paprika, bay leaf and bring to a boil. When boiling add shrimp. Cook for a couple of minutes until shrimp is pink, but not over cooked. When pink and tender pour into a strainer and allow to cool.

Mix together orange juice, vinegar, olive oil, honey and a dash of cinnamon.

Dice watermelon and avocado. Add cooled shrimp (I was impatient and mine was still warm but it was just fine) and orange juice mixture. Gently fold together all ingredients. Serve immediately.

We ate it so fast that I didn’t even take a picture.

not the way your house should smell when you to return from vacation

We were gone for the past 9 days. We came home, put the kids to down for naps and Jared went out to wash the car and work out. I went into the basement to get something and noticed a nasty smell. I opened the freezer to find it full of rancid decaying meat. I’d just filled our freezer with a bunch of bison, organic chicken, and Jared’s Lean Cuisines that he takes for lunch. The freezer had clearly died early in our trip. It had had enough time to full thaw and grow extremely rancid. It STANK! On some pieces there was visible mold growth. blauck!! To add to my complaining, this is the second year in a row that we’ve had to trash the items in our freezer after our summer vacation. Last year it wasn’t the freezer’s fault.
Well, when things go wrong I just remind myself that I’m healthy and my kids are safely sleeping in their beds. I can handle the futility of paying and shopping for food, only to throw it away.

Someone has earned some bragging rights. He just doesn’t know how to brag so I’ll do it for him. Winfield has been reading like a maniac lately and we’re really impressed. He reads everything, all of the time. He sits on the toilet and reads. He reads all of the billboards when we drive, he reads nearly everything in the grocery store. He reads over my shoulder when I’m reading. He is in love with words. It’s really cute to watch and as parents we couldn’t be more excited. He is obsessed with words in that way that 4-year-old boys get obsessed with things. We taught him the basics, bought him some Bob books and he took it from there. Like a kid that learns to walk and all of the sudden stops crawling, it seem like he became a reader overnight.

Yes I’m shamelessly bragging, but come on! My 4-year old is reading at a 2nd-3rd grade level. I would hope that I would brag about that. Just to be clear. He is a young 4, not even 4 1/2. Here’s a little clip of him this afternoon.

They all say that you should read to your kids when they are young.

But I say, you should teach the young kids read to the young kids. It saves a lot of time!

Yesterday Baby Nate came over for a bit in the afternoon. I needed to put Harriet down for her nap so I laid Nate on the floor of Win’s room and told Win to take care of him. When I returned to his room Win had tucked himself and Nate under Win’s favorite blanket and he was reading sentences from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe to him. It was simply too much! Nate seemed to like it too, at least he didn’t seem to want Win to go anywhere.

…this company sent us a catalog. They knew what they were doing. Win loved to pour over each page. He and Harriet loved to discuss which theme was their favorite. He finally settled on one that was his ultimate favorite and he would always go back to it. He passed over Cars, Mario, bugs, monster trucks, Thomas the Train, and Spiderman to finally land on a party that was themed on a kitten wearing a crown. It gave me such giggles that I went ahead and ordered the plates. We enjoyed his birthday cow cake on those plates. There were a couple left and I’d never gotten a picture of Win with his 4-year-old birthday plates. Here they are.

Harriet wanted a picture with the Kitty plates too. Here’s her first attempt.

So I told her to tip it up…hmmm?

“Nope, hold it straight up and down, Harriet.”

“Show me a little of your face.”

Win’s been reading and writing a lot lately. I had some popsicle sticks and 3×5 inch cards, so the kids have been making signs galore. I thought that this one was pretty cute. It says, “Haryet, mom, bab, Babee” (Harriet, Mom, Dad, Baby)

… continued to play music as the boat went down. Harriet has a version of the music and lyrics of the exact song that they were playing. Celine Dion, move over. A younger girl has taken your place as the Titanic vocalist to the world, and she’s topless.

…of names for our little baby GIRL! A couple of weeks ago Winfield told me, “Harriet and I agreed that if it’s a girl his name will be Bambi.” We had our ultrasound this morning. We’re having a little girl in September. So far “Bambi” seems to be the only suggestion. I guess that Jared and I have 19 more weeks to think of something else. Tinkerbell? Miss Piggy? Pippi Long Stocking?

Win’s been learning to read. And it’s really cute. He has a bunch of boxes of BOB books that he’s been flying through. He reads everywhere we go, in stores, on billboards. It’s like he’s unlocked a secret code. Today in the store he asked me, “Why does is just say ‘towels’ and not ‘paper towels’?” I answer these kinds of questions dozens of times a day.

Yesterday I looked outside to see that he’d brought one of his reading books outside with him. He was riding his Skuut bike and reading at the same time. Too much!
