We have a pet!

WIth all of this gorgeous weather we’ve had our doors open a lot. Needless to say, we now have a fly in the house, which annoys the kids quite a bit. And if you know anything about Henderson reflexes this fly is going to enjoy a long happy life indoors until it dies of old age or flies out a window. Today at lunch Win said, “You know that fly that is too quick to hit? Let’s make him our pet. Let’s name him Fly-on-things.”

I used my point and shoot to grab a couple of quick pictures of our new pet.

…Winfield refused to have any relationship with his Moses wig. I’m finally getting around to posting some pix. Win asked to be Moses for Halloween. I found him a Moses wig and Jared snatched a staff from the woods while we were hiking. We improved the rest of the costume the hour before the halloween party. Harriet’s costume is a last minute improve too. Can you guess what she is? I can’t either, but she was satisfied :-)

The 60 degree weather beckoned us to Mt Pisgah this evening. We have a little tradition of packing a picnic and driving out there on nice days. We climb the 200+stairs and dine at the top, overlooking Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Macatawa on the other. It’s a really nice view. Then we hike the trail down. Often we stop for ice cream on the way back. I brought my little point and shoot with me this time. This was probably the last time that we’ll be able to do this until spring

Can I have some parasite?

Yesterday, at the farmers market, I bought some cider made from pears. Win is having a hard time remembering what to call it. He keeps asking me for some “parasite.”

LOW-sagna

Tonight Winfield announced, “I have a recipe!…It’s sugar, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, apples, water and crackers. It’s called LOW-sagna.”

Anyone want to come over for dinner?

He followed it up with, “Why do goodies always start with butter?”

The UPS guy came. I can now begin my pursuit of shocking coolness.

For the past several months there has been something standing in between myself and total unhindered coolness. Yesterday the UPS man arrived to deliver my instant-rock-star-in-a-box lens. I was so excited about its delivery I posted signs on both doors so that I wouldn’t miss him. I showered with my robe next to the shower and the bathroom door open. Sure enough, bang bang bang, I jumped my soapy self into my robe and to the door to sign for this beautiful piece of glass. Oh I am sooo excited!

Now that I own this wide angle goodness I can begin shamelessly copying photographers like Nate and Jaclyn, Max and Sean. Warning, if you click on the these links you’ll soon discover the total awesomeness to ultra talented photographers. I’m pretty certain that these guys were born with cameras in their hands and never discard a single picture.

Thankfully yesterday was beautiful. The kids and I went to the park and we all played.

Here are a couple camera-phone pix of HRH. She doesn’t really mind being treated like royalty, and today we don’t mind pampering her. She’s going to stay another night since the nights are the most difficult time for croup.

Safe but hospitalized

Harriet and I spent the night in the emergency room last night and she’s at the hospital now. She’s had a hoarse voice and croupy cough for the last couple of days. Last night she woke up coughing and was having a very difficult time breathing. Her breathing was very loud, her chest was sinking in with each breath and she could just whisper to talk. I took her to the hospital while Jared stayed with Win, who is sick too. After a dose of steroid and 4 breathing treatments her breathing could still be heard down the hall. She was admitted this morning. Jared is with her now.

She was a real champ all night last night. We brought her to the emergency room where we sat and read books, she ate hospital crackers and was sweet, smily and floppy. At one point she had some x-rays taken. They tied her to the little stool about 5 feet in the air and then arranged her arms into strange positions. She sweetly held the position while the x-ray tech walked behind the glass the take the x-ray. It was impressive. She stayed awake from midnight until 7am being weighed, poked, x-rayed, nebulizered, oxygen tested, and systematically annoyed. Nearly every time the nurses left she would whisper, “thank you” as they left.

She’s sleeping now and her breathing has improved. The diagnosis is croup. I’m glad that she is in the hospital where she can me monitored. We’re not at all concerned, but I thought that you all’d like to know what’s going on.

Oh, she repeatedly let me know that she wants to tell Win about the new dress that they gave her at the hospital :-)

Meet Pretty Boy

This summer my Grandparents welcomed a new baby into their home. This is their parrot. He’s a couple of months old, but I don’t think he’ll get much bigger. The kids find him interesting, but they are also terrified of him. I think he feels the same about them.

Win’s criteria for a wife

Win asked me about last names and why we are called Henderson. In explaining it to him I told him that when Harriet grows up she might get married and she might decide to get a new last name. Win announced that he wanted Harriet to be his wife. I remember thinking this about my brother too. I began explaining to him that he was probably going marry someone that he hasn’t met yet.

He asked “Where is she?”

I replied, “I don’t know, you’ll have to look for her.”

He then said, “I will look in all of the houses to see which is the cleanest.”

I have no idea where he got this idea or why he said this.
