CATAWBA, NC (WBTV/AP) - Jeremy Mayfield's battle with NASCAR has become a he-said, they-said, she-said affair. Mayfield says he is fighting back against allegations of drug use.

WBTV Reporter Sarah Batista interviewed Mayfield at his home in Catawba County Thursday night. He accuses NASCAR of conspiring against him.

"I've never done meth," Mayfield said.

Danica Patrick on Friday rejected skeptics who say she is incapable of switching from driving lighter, aerodynamic Indy cars to the much bulkier and heavier stock cars used on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Patrick, 27, is in the last year of her contract with the IndyCar team Andretti Green Racing and is evaluating options for next season.

Patrick last year became the first woman to win a major U.S.-sanctioned open-wheel race when she won the IndyCar race at Motegi, Japan.

Am I surprised to hear that Kevin Harvick asked to be released from Richard Childress Racing at the end of the year? Absolutely not. You can tell that over the last couple years there has been a very large amount of frustration there. To be fair, I believe the frustration to be on both parties parts.

Other than the win at the 2007 All-Star Race and this year's Budweiser Shootout, both of which are considered exhibition races, Harvick has only visited Victory Lane in Cup competition once in the last two and a half years. Granted, that one trip to Victory Lane was following the Daytona 500, but that's still not enough for this high-profile team.

The last remaining employee at Jeremy Mayfield's race team said Wednesday he resigned because he doesn't believe Mayfield Motorsports will return to the track.

Bobby Wooten, general manager of the first-year team, said his resignation had nothing to do with Mayfield's ongoing battle with NASCAR over a failed drug test. Mayfield was suspended May 9 for testing positive for what NASCAR said was methamphetamines.

Jeremy Mayfield tested positive again for methamphetamine, NASCAR said, igniting another round of denials from the driver, who angrily accused the sanctioning body of paying his stepmother to lie about his alleged past drug use.

The positive result from a July 6 random test was included in a U.S. District Court filing Wednesday that asked the federal judge who lifted Mayfield's drug suspension to reinstate the ban. The filing included an affidavit from Mayfield's stepmother, Lisa, who said she witnessed the driver using methamphetamine at least 30 times over seven years.

It seems all roads are leading to Stewart-Haas Racing these days.

Kevin Harvick has told Richard Childress he would like to leave after this season, according to multiple sources. Harvick has one year remaining on his contract with RCR, but the Shell/Pennzoil sponsorship deal on the No. 29 ends at the end of this season, and Harvick is trying to move with it to Stewart-Haas.

Tony Stewart has said his team is interested in running a third car in Sprint Cup in 2010. Adding Harvick in a package with a strong sponsor would be a masterstroke.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Martin Truex Jr. has been penalized by NASCAR for a rules violation during Saturday's race at Chicagoland Speedway.

NASCAR announced Tuesday that Truex was docked 25 points in the Sprint Cup Series driver standings because his right rear quarter panel was found to be too high at the post-race inspection. Truex is 24th in the standings. His No. 1 Chevrolet finished 16th on Saturday.

Crew chief Kevin Manion was fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Owner Teresa Earnhardt was penalized 25 points in the Sprint Cup Series owner standings.

NASCAR has not issued the results of the drug test administered to Jeremy Mayfield on July 6.

Mayfield is currently involved in legal action with the sanctioning body. NASCAR said Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines May 1 and suspended him indefinitely, but Mayfield went to court and had his suspension overturned July 1 by U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen.

JOLIET, Ill. - Was Martin Truex Jr. riding too high at Chicagoland Speedway?

NASCAR is taking Truex's No. 1 Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing Chevrolet back to their Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C., after discovering the right rear of the car was high in postrace inspection.

Truex was selected for random inspection at the conclusion of the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Truex finished 16th in Saturday night's race.

Any penalties would be announced following further inspection, likely on Tuesday or Wednesday.

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson traded paint. It might be awhile until they exchange pleasantries.

Busch was fuming with Johnson after two of NASCAR's top stars got into some late-race bumping Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway that left each of them wondering if one has a problem with the other.

Johnson, though, seemed more ready to move on and let the incident slide.
