EVERYWHERE—Expect more black-and-white images of an oiled-up David and Victoria Beckham, including the shot above, to be coming to a billboard near you sometime this month. After shooting so many ads for Armani, we daresay the two look like they're starting to get bored. But you know how it goes: How many times can you get up, put on your designer undies, and go writhe on a pile of ropes with your improbably-built superstar significant other before it all starts to feel a bit...repetitive? We sort of thought founder Blake Mycoskie was the type of guy who would spend the Fourth of July in a tent on a deserted beach in Belize, but hey, Montauk is nice too.

Click the image above to view the full photogallery.

This may be the most poignant Store Sidekicks post we ever run: The handsome tabby above, Monty, is the store cat at South Williamsburg menswear boutique Yoko Devereaux, which announced that it was closing this past Monday. Monty himself will be fine (as, we suspect, will Yoko creator Andy Salzer, who's been busy all week running an insanely popular sale) but he's a social guy, and it seems safe to assume he'll miss interacting with customers.

Yoko Devereaux sits beneath the elevated J/M/Z on a busy stretch of Broadway. Salzer lives in a well-appointed apartment behind the boutique, and Monty has his run of the place. His favorite activity: Sitting in the store window, befriending the people who walk past. When we dropped by to, uh, interview him, he attracted a mom and two small boys who stood outside, playing with him through the glass. You might also remember him in the window in the NYT's review of the shop; for a cat, he seems to have his media strategy set.

At the moment, Monty's living in the middle of a retail frenzy. When Yoko Devereaux's closing sale begin on Tuesday at 8am, there was a line of people waiting outside the shop—today, all that's left are t-shirts in XL and XXL. For the next few weeks, Salzer will be selling off the store's fixtures and furniture. Then, he'll try to find his next project, presumably one that will allow Monty more time in the spotlight.

As a Fourth of July picnicking and swimming special, we'd like to know if you think the Herve Leger by Max Azria swimsuit pictured above is wearable...for things other than magazine editorials.

The line of swimsuits from the famous bandage dress label debuted for the Spring/Summer 2009 season, and the strappy pieces have quickly found their way onto the bodies of the celebs who already love the body-conscious dresses; namely Lindsay Lohan and Beyonce.

But to drop $800 for a swimsuit that has as many probably issues as this one...well we don't know. First off, it's white so that means no sitting down or drinking anything other than pina coladas. Second, do we need a map to get into one of these? Third, anything not sucked in by the straps could bulge out between them. And fourth, hello crazy tan lines! So are you down? Let us know in the comments.

Lisa Perry, who has never met a bright color she didn't like, opened a pop-up shop today in the former home of Hogan on Spring between Wooster and Greene. Perry's been selling her signature color-blocked mod dresses out of a combined retail space and office on West Broadway, but the old location was up a flight of stairs. As she told WWD, it was just time to be street-level.

The new store bursts with color—partly from the dresses and handbags on display, but also from Perry's home line, which is not exactly dour either. Her pillows and bedding are so dazzling that they might actually keep people up at night, and her coasters, placemats, and notebooks are equally cheery. In addition to Perry's own designs, the store also carries books, DVDs, jewelry, and other items that have inspired her. It will remain in the space through August, and possibly longer if things go well.

Thanks to an eagle-eyed tipster, we were alerted to the appearance of another painted ad at the intersection of Christopher and Bleecker Streets in the West Village, in the same spot as the Loomstate for Target ad back in April.

This time however, it's a pair of big shiny lips celebrating the opening of the Comme des Garçons BLACK store on 17th Street in West Chelsea. It's obvious that the hopes behind this ad are to direct some of the Bleecker shopping traffic thataway, but the scaffolding kind of ruins the effect of the black-and-white ad. So this is the new advertising hotspot, huh? We wonder what'll be next up.
Grose's explanation of how she fell down the romper rabbit hole in the first place: "I was trying on what I thought was an eye-catching amethyst dress from the Chilean label Zero+Maria Cornejo. When I attempted to climb into it, I realized that there was a rogue piece of fabric in the middle of the skirt. A label? A pad? No! Quelle horreur! I had unknowingly tried on a romper. And even more disturbing, I liked it." [Slate]

Images via American Apparel

No, this is not an ad in the back pages of the Village Voice advertising "Asian body work" or "exotic escorts," even though it could soon be on the reverse of the L Magazine, where American Apparel ads usually hang out.

With the launch of AA's new line of bedding—pillowcases or twin/queen/king sheet sets in either gray or white—comes a whole new reason for scantily-clad models. Except you see, since these items aren't clothing, there's really no need to bother with cladding at all. And so we have the typical American Apparel flash-heavy photos of models in compromising positions, seemingly following the rules of callgirl ads.

As more AAs open around the world, it looks as though they are increasingly embracing a skeevy image that once only belonged to the CEO, Dov Charney. Past use of at least two well-known pornstars in campaigns and the recent installation of stripper-ish signs on their storefronts further support this. Of course it also didn't help that when we visited the AA homepage today, we were greeted by "Sophia" modeling territories beyond her mesh thong.

Now we're no prudes, but this second group of sheet poses does not make us want to buy their $40-and-up bedding any more than mud wrestling makes us crave chocolate pudding. Leave the back-page callgirls alone, Dov, unless you'd like to hire them, but oh wait—you've already got problems there.

Today's Post investigates a new Meatpacking District scourge: The overwhelming smell of Diane von Furstenberg's signature perfume, which supposedly wafts out of her West 14th Street boutique through the air vents. An unidentified bypasser called the smell ""putrid, awful . . . something you'd find on a 60-year-old matron," and a local medical authority (oh, OK, a receptionist at St. Luke's Hospital Eye Clinic) says it's making people cough. We haven't noticed any odor, but maybe we're there at the wrong times? If you've been afflicted by this ylang ylang-scented menace, let us know in the comments.
"Most jewelry, to my mind, looks slightly vulgar, a somewhat primitive display of conspicuous wealth," explains Wilson, who assumed she would be unmoved by Azagury-Patridge's blindingly expensive creations. "I was not prepared to suffer from a raw and unquenchable envy that would make me consider extra moneymaking strategies like kidnapping/extortion or piracy." But the mystical geometric designs win her over. When a saleswoman shows off her kabbalah-inspired bracelet, Wilson writes, "It filled me with such inexpressible spiritual pleasure that I had a nearly irresistible urge to mug her."
NOHO—Wondering why the windows of Broadway boutique Atrium are filled with celebrities posing under such cruel taunts as "Nobody Loves Atrium"? Wonder no more! The ads are promoting "Nobody Wa s Thirsty," a collaboration between Australian denim brand Nobody, Hollywood restaurant Café Wa s, and the non-profit charity: water. In addition to a shared commitment to making sentences seem poorly proofread, the three companies aim to help those living in places without hygienic drinking water. Buy one of Nobody's Wa s-sponsored $60 shirts at Atrium, and charity:water will keep two people hydrated for twenty years. [RackedWire]

MIDTOWN—From the kiosk files: Today, Local Labels opened a space in the Greybar passageway of Grand Central Terminal. The stand sells only gift items and specialty foods made within the five boroughs, which is very ecologically responsible, and they try to keep everything light enough to travel well, which is very considerate towards weekend house guests who suddenly remember that they need to bring a present while running through the train station.
It was only yesterday that we dropped by the Bluefly.com studio for a little tête-à-tête with Project Runway Season 5 winner Leanne Marshall, and today we have even more information on her capsule collection with the online retailer.

The line will release next Wednesday, July 8, exclusively at Bluefly.com and features pricing between $98 and $990. Of course the $990 item is the deep blue gown of silk and organza, but otherwise the pieces are under $300.

Although the model in these official pictures looks a bit strung out in the shot with the pink dress, the gown makes her appear positively Amazonian, even more so than a model should be. The real dilemma is if this waterfall of a dress will translate well to the bodies of regular women, the ones who'll be clicking for it next week.

It hasn't even been a year since Ralph Lauren Women moved from this smaller location to take over the larger L'Uomo space across the street, and we can't even remember how they ever managed before. Now, as Ralph Lauren Children, the shop seems much better suited to its small digs—selling small clothes as they do— and putting up some good competition for neighboring Little Marc.

The proximity of the two designer kiddie stories means that the competition erupts into the creation of eye-catching windows. Marc has been loving a jungle theme for spring and summer, which, while surprising, means you can't see crap inside the store. On the other hand, Ralph takes the friendlier route by subtly referencing the Beatles with their yellow submarine. It's cute and fresh and when we were young a child, we thought submarines were cool, so Ralph wins.
From a 2008 article about Dov Charney in now-defunct business journal Portfolio:
Last December, Charney was served with a notice of inspection by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the largest investigative branch of the Department of Homeland Security, informing him that he needed to prepare documentation on all of his workers for review.

Charney and his growing team of lawyers and consultants have taken this as a warning. The company has given the feds records for thousands of workers; Charney says he hasn't heard a word in response. Since then, he's spent his days bracing for a raid at any time on American Apparel's factories.
The company received the results last week, according to WWD. It hasn't been raided as such—it wasn't charged with any wrongdoing, since the ICE believes that it didn't knowingly hire illegal aliens—but if the 1,800 cited employees can't prove that they're here legally, they're all going to lose their jobs.

Jezebel adds sensibly that since Zoe's been telling the world exactly what stuff she likes for years, it's not like the newsletter will clear up any unsolved mysteries.
Williamsburg boutique 5in1 just relaunched with a new, recession-friendly business approach that makes it sound like a Park Slope food co-op for people who care more about good design than ethically-sourced kale. The rules: The store is only open Friday through Sunday. Each of the eight designers who share the space must work one weekend every 6-8 weeks, but they get to decide what "work" entails—they can hold a trunk show or sample sale, for example, or use the space for meetings with clients. In the meantime, other designers (currently Bliss Lau and scarfmakers A Peace Treaty) will operate out of the shop on consignment.

In its previous life, 5in1 was much more of a traditional boutique with hired shop clerks, although it had several design studios—including one for since-blown-up jewelry brand Made Her Think—in the back. But despite a great location on the North 6th shopping corridor between Wythe and Kent, the store still felt the recession's pinch, and it shut down last November. This new plan, which lets customers chat with the designers while they're trying on their wares, sounds more sustainable, not to mention more fun.
Cozied into a curious spot at the back of Morgenthal Frederics Opticians on West Broadway and Spring Street is a small retail space which has remained dormant for some time. But hopefully not for much longer as a small piece of paper appeared recently, sporting a typical Manhattan cup of coffee and the optimistic words "Coming Soon."

We perused the building permits and leases listed online, but no luck in discovering the identity of the future tenant, who'll be possibly brewing next to Eileen Fisher. But will it be a coffee shop, and if so will it lean trendy or cozy? Damn their cryptic signage; the people must be kept abreast of Soho situations, especially where caffeine is involved.

As any fan of Project Runway knows, one of the prizes for the winner is to have a collection produced and sold on Bluefly.com, and Season 5's triumphant designer Leanne Marshall is in the midst of doing just that.

Today we actually headed up to Bluefly HQ to preview the collection of eco-friendly pieces and chat with Leanne during the official photoshoot. We grabbed each item off of the rack, so please excuse our less than glam photos, but hey—they are the first photos of the actual garments.

The collection consists of one formal gown, two everyday dresses, one skirt, two tanks, two knit tops, and a short jacket, all in shades of coral, cream or blue. Although price points haven't yet been released, the pieces themselves are well-made and reflective of Leanne's signature feminine swoopy style—there are petals aplenty.

Talking with Leanne, she revealed that she's been living in New York City since January and now has a (very adorable) assistant who does all her running to Mood Fabrics. She also still posts handmade pieces to her Etsy because she "enjoys the personal interaction." Guess this means this might be the last time we see her working to mass produce her work?
Freeman's at night. Photo by Daniel Krieger

The Lower East Side's busiest little side street is about to get busier. Costume jewelry line Fenton/Fallen plans to open a store on Freeman Alley next month, according to WWD. The space, which will occupy 1,500 square feet, does not sound like what you would call minimalist. Per designer Dana Lorenz, it's "similar in design to a well-appointed Park Avenue town house but is disrupted by hints of overt elements such as neon pawn-shop windows and pop details reminiscent of the Eighties." Along with the Fenton and Fallon jewelry collections, the shop will also carry a private stash of vintage from designers like Chanel, Balenciaga, and Stephen Sprouse. Sounds like a pleasant way to kill an hour while waiting to get into Freeman's.

We're declaring a sale emergency, folks; Yoko Devereaux in South Williamsburg is liquidating—like that couch? make an offer—and sale stock is fast dwindling. But it's no wonder, with prices like $5 for formerly $60+ T-shirts and $20 for button-downs and one-of-a-kind samples (only in medium) for Fall/Winter 2009.

Though today is the first day of the blowout in the actual store, the discounts began online yesterday and not only sold out the ties priced at $1, but also possibly overwhelmed the server.

Despite the impending closure, owner Andy Saltzer is upbeat as he continues to provide great customer service. The response has been overwhelming and he encourages shoppers to come to the store and snag items as he works on fulfilling online orders. See something you like on the rack? Don't hesitate to ask if there are other sizes in the back.

There are T-shirts aplenty, in more styles than featured on the website, as well as polos and his famous long cardigans. A few styles of pants, some great jackets in stripe or check prints, and the odd sample round out the selection, and all look appealing since the store hasn't yet been reduced to a shitshow.

Mike Albo, you better get your tushie over there stat.

Tucked underneath the scaffolding on Elizabeth Street between Spring and Prince, you'll find salon Valley and its new in-store counterpart, Portia & Manny. Both are new to the space: Valley Salon was previously on the LES, and Portia & Manny's line, then called Sweet Tater, was close by on Mulberry Street. Together, they pack a one-two punch: Holistic facials and manicures alongside vintage clothing.

Valley specializes in complicated 3-D nail masterpieces, but they also features a special "hard wax" technique which promises to make your waxing experience virtually painless. As for Portia & Manny, they carry one-of-a-kind dresses and flowing boho tops for prices in the $100-$200 range. Not a bad reincarnation for the space that used to house departed shoe line Hollywould.—Daniella Lavian
