I can’t wait to introduce you to the superb sounds of Lorely Rodriguez, also known as Empress Of. She gained quite a bit of notoriety late last year when she uploaded a 13 song playlist onto YouTube named Colorminutes – and, as the name suggests, it was crafted as 13 minute-length songs each with its unique color that reinforces the feeling. This built enough anticipation about this new artist that I couldn’t wait for her actual album to come out. Well, I’m very excited to report to you that her Systems EP was finally released in April and it definitely doesn’t disappoint!

Empress Of has immediately shown that she is ahead of the class with her beautifully thoughtful lyrics and angelic voice that are all wrapped up in this incredible glitchy dream pop that tickles my ears. You absolutely need to go pick this up! The name of the album again is Systems EP you can get on Terrible Records.

Until very recently this group from Bogota, Columbia now based in Brooklyn used to be make music under the name Il Abanico (a name you may recognize from my Best of 2012 episode which featured the song "Solo" from their album Crossing Colours.) If you missed it then, you’re gonna get a chance to hear "Solo" and other tracks from the Crossing Colours EP PLUS some brand new music they just released under the new name Salt Cathedral.

I’ve been a really big fan these guys for quite a while! Their experimental dream pop is full of masterly executed swirling beats and rhythmic lines that reinforce the beautiful vocals of Juliana - which seem to float weightlessly over the music. You can get the Crossing Colours EP for free over at their Bandcamp and we’ll keep you updated with more new music from Salt Cathedral as its released.

El Gran Chufle is a quartet from Paris by way of Santiago, Chile whose music is really hard to put into a box. I was very impressed by their sound when they first fell onto my radar a couple years ago with their EP Tambores Obstinados y Ruido Voltaico, and since the release of their newest album they’ve had regular rotation on my playlists! Supposedly inspired by an old Inca legend of a UFO landing on Lake Titicaca, their new album, Waitecas, is nine tracks of their dreamy & spacey blend of psychedelic surf that often implements unusual instruments to create an eerie retro-futuristic feeling. You can also cop this bad boy on vinyl via Hueso Records. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of much more music to come from these guys!

A bit of a mysterious figure, Arca (aka Alejandro Ghersi) is a Venezuelan by way of NYC that has been creating abstract cuts from what seems like everything he can get his hands on. His almost erratic production style switches often and by surprise, reflective one moment and practically schizophrenic the next. He ties this all together with very noticeable hip-hop influences sprinkled with anything from 8-bit energy to darker trap/witch house sounds.

That’s right! Portland’s own, Y La Bamba, just released a brand new EP last week appropriately titled “Oh February.” This follow up to their full length album “Court the Storm” (easily one of my favorite of 2012) was produced by The Decemberists’ Chris Funk and released on the label Tender Loving Empire.

They’re starting 2013 off with quite a bang! They've just finished up an east coast tour with The Lumineers, and now they're offering 6 brand new songs of their signature blend of Mexicanismo and Americana that are sure to bring a little warmth the tail end of your winter.

This week I smuggle another two hours of the best ruido onto 87.9 FM since every other corporate radio station in The City is completely sleeping on these guys (that's right, I'm talking to you Latino Mix!)

Los Punsetes are an indie band from Madrid whose youthful, often sarcastic, lyrics offer a cold reality check in such a good sounding dead-pan manner, that you can't help but enjoy the bad news. They really made a mark in 2011 with their hit "Tus Amigos," and in 2012 they teamed up with El Guincho to bring you their newest release "Una Montaña es una Montaña."

This was an easy addition to my best of 2012 list, and I was honestly surprised that I haven't dedicated a show to them already. You can download the entire 12-track album for under $10 over at bandcamp.com

Comprised of both vocalist Li Saumet and bassist Simon Mejia, Bomba Estereo return with the same raw explosiveness found on their hit album Blow Up but with more maturity in sound, songwriting, and concept. In their new work they manage to achieve an almost perfect balance of Afro-Colombian rhythms like champeta and cumbia with elements of trip-hop, rock, r&b, dancehall, and everything in-between. Now take this sound and top it with the fiery vocals of Li Saumet (whose delivery can be, one minute, so sensual that it's painfully beautiful, then so assertive the next that you can't help but jump around and dance) and you know you've got a winning combination!

For those of you who are fans of the singing style Andrea Acheverri of Aterciopelados or the intricate interlocking loops found on the music of artists like El Guincho, I've got a wonderful find for you!

Le Parody is a talented singer and multi-instrumentalist whose music is really hard to pigeonhole. I first got wind of this artist when she released a teaser EP titled Parala Vergito about a year ago on 11/11/11, and just in time for 12/12/12 Le Parody has dropped this gem titled Casala (Soundtrack). Not sure what the soundtrack part refers to but this girl does an impressive job of assembling her new approach to folk sounds along with audio clips so seamlessly that they feel like it should be a soundtrack to the accompanying movie.

Las Amigas de Nadie first made a splash on the scene with 2011's Capsula, but it is their most recent work that has catapulted them into Peruvian indie stardom. Leaning away from the more digestible pop found on their previous album, Sincronia has Las Amigas de Nadie experimenting more with combining Andean music with an indie-rock aesthetic - all wrapped in synths, loops, and other trippy effects.

This week's featured artist is Kali Mutsa – the performance name of Chilean actress Celine Reymond whose interesting mix of Andean sounds, retro- Bollywood style beats, and incredible Gypsy swagger has me quite impressed!

I’ve been pretty much in LOVE with single “Tunupa!” since I first heard a demo of it earlier this year.

Admittedly, I thought that, perhaps, it was a one-off piece of brilliance, but then much to my excitement the single "San Cipriano" was released and I was convinced that this is really something special.

Her debut EP, Ambrolina is being released by Miami-based SHOCK Entertainment and can be found on ITunes or anywhere you get your music.

I opened the show with Violeta Vil's cover of the Los Panchos song “El Reloj” (just one of the many good covers available on the most recent Club Fonograma compilation), and then I played "Toronjil", the new single taken from Violeta Vil’s debut full-length album, Lápidas y Cocoteros, which is scheduled to be later in October via the indie label Discoteca Océano (they are the ones who originally released El Guincho’s - "Alegranza" so you know they know what they’re doin’!)

Neon Indian is headed by Mexican born Texan, Alan Palomo, and has become one of my favorite groups to emerge from this whole "chill-wave" sound. Their debut album, 2009's Psychic Chasms, created tons of buzz around the blogosphere for its playful drugged out psychedelic sounds, and has received regular airplay on Radio Coyote

Since then, the story goes he spent last winter in Helsinki, Finland to record his album in solidarity and the result of that, Era Extraña, was released just released earlier this week. I’ve been listening to the album quite a bit in the last few days and I have to say I really really like this album! Listening to Era Extraña is like hearing the steps of a recovering broken heard. The feel is much less goofy than its predecessor, but still has a great danceable mix of retro synths, beats, and video game sounds that is much more intricate and also kinda dark -- which I guess would make sense considering it was recorded in the arctic circle.

Mueran Humanos was formed in Barcelona in 2006 by Buenos Aires duo/couple Carmen Burguess and Tomas Nochteff as the live musical element of an art installation. They recently finished their self-titled debut which contains eight brilliant dark and surreal tracks that take you on a sexy danceable journey through a spectrum of musical styles including krautrock, industrial, noise, punk, and electronica.

Now based in Berlin, they are part of Italian industrial label Old Europa Café. Their debut is available on vinyl in the US via BlindProphet Records, and the first 78 copies arrive with a “randomly selected” card from a German edition of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth tarot deck.

I opened this week's show with a cover of Iggy Pop’s Sick of You by one of the best kept secrets of the Colombian music scene, Lucrecia Dalt – a very talented multi-instrumentalist who creates a powerful blend of indie folk and smooth electronica by using a finely tuned setup of of guitar, bass, voice, programmed beats and other details that range from floor toms and kitchen chairs to seagulls to create beautifully strange harmonies that never sounds cluttered.

Now based in Barcelona, she appears to be working with a bunch of other interesting artists such as German Electronic composer FS Blumm with whom she teamed up on for the the “Sick of You” cover which is just one of a bunch of interesting covers those chose to do together on her new EP titled “Cuatro Covers”

This week’s featured artist is Juan Manuel Torreblanca: a virtuoso performer who has contributed to the careers of Julieta Venegas, Natalia Lafourcade, Ximena Sarinana, among many others, I’m sure, as a member of their backing bands.

Backed himself,now by some of the best artists in DF under the band name Torreblanca, they released their 5-track Defensa EP which was one of my personal top albums last year. Torreblanca’s first EP (which you can stream below) has garnered so much acclaim that they’ve made many best of lists and have even been drawing comparisons to Café Tacvba for their originality & musical craftsmanship – I know that sounds like blasphemy, but consider that Quique of Café Tacvba (who most of you know as the creator of Cafeta’s bad ass base lines) has pretty much taken them in as their mentor and produced their new album Lobo, the comparisons may be apt.

If you are at interested in some of the best music our hemisphere as to offer, then frankly I highly suggest you check out this band that is at the forefront of a sonic movement developing in one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world!

These week we feature the futuristic otherworldly chillwave of White Ninja; the brainchild of Leo Marz who was previously a member of the band Album (whose 2008 release Cancer Baby is one of my favorite Mexican releases of all time and still available for free on DelHotel records BTW). Marz’s main contribution to that group was through synths & guitars and his work as White Ninja further highlights his skills in the electronic realm.

I opened with "PCU" from his sophomore release Sounds Like Cocoon Fever which is available on the net label Records are Dead for the measly cost of a tweet and soon it will also be available on cassette on UK’s Abastrakt Muzak!

Gaby Moreno is a singer/songwriter from Guatemala City, Guatemala who, reportedly, first encountered the blues during a family trip to New York at the age of 13 and has been enamored with it ever since. The vintage sounds of classic blues, soul, and R&B were so alluring to Gaby in her youth that she practically taught herself English through reading and learning lyrics to the songs she loved. In recent years, she has won the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, was nominated for an Emmy for co-writing the theme song to NBC's Parks and Recreation, and has had her music featured in numerous shows including: Lincoln Heights, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills, and Off the Map.

On her album, Illustrated Songs, Gaby combines these influential sounds from her youth with Latin music from the same era and is backed by what sounds like a very talented band. Whether through her soulful attitude on "Mess a Good Thing" or her sweet vocals on a track like "No Regrets", Gaby Moreno's vocal and songwriting talents navigate the junctions of language and genres effortlessly. That is an accomplishment that is difficult to achieve, and I think that Gaby has the grace, the skill, and the range to make it big!
