With their recent Doolittle 20th anniversary tour underway, now is as good a chance as any to check out The Pixies playing some of their finest material. The clip included here is part of a promotional appearance on The Tonight Show to talk about the tour (on which the only material play shall be from the aforementioned album) and also for the behemoth collection, Minotaur, which Conan displays before the performance. It’s 25-26 lbs. of awesome, people!

Thanks to Prefix Mag for the tip!

Full disclosure: At the day gig, I have been working with the A+R team to garner placements and promotional opportunities for the set, but this clip was too good not to share. I heart the band and this performance is BEYOND tight.

There are a few great film/album mashups. Two of the more obvious ones are Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon and Toy Story/OK Computer synchronizations. But rare is the instance of finding a film inspired by and created completely in an album’s image – an album that stands alone, but also perfectly scores said film. Noah and the Whale accomplish this with their second album release and film debut, The First Days of Spring. At the recent screening of the film (by the same name) at Piano’s in NYC, the man who would prefer to remain behind the curtain (if he had his way) and front man of Noah, Charlie Fink, answered the eternal chicken/egg conundrum for fans, confirming that the album actually came first.

A bit about The First Days of Spring, the album. It’s gorgeous. It’s incredibly sad. It conveys a melancholy kind of hope in a time of transition. Somewhat fitting, given that drummer Doug Fink has gracefully resigned to pursue his career in medicine, and has been replaced by drummer/pianist Jack Hansom, and an additional guitarist, Fred Abbottland. It is noteworthy to mention that these newest Whalers were not part of this recording, but will nonetheless be future collaborators and play at all gigs going forward. First Days… has more electric guitar (lonely), and is laden with wistful minor chords on the strings and piano (fitting). And the lyrics, are, well, very Noah (i.e. “You know in a year, it’s going to be better / You know in a year, I’m going to be happy” and “I don’t think that it’s the end, but I know we can’t keep going”).

Sweetly depressing.

The storyline that threads through The First Days of Spring the film is not intended to match the lyrics of each song on the album, yet somehow the actions and expressions procured from the characters send similar messages. Both the film and the album as a standalone piece give way to an overwhelming sense of grasping to hope in situations where an individual feels physically and emotionally trapped. Perhaps this entrapment is rooted in the notion of definition – people often yearn and think fondly of simpler times of youth and young love – a time more conducive to imagination rather than taking a place in society. Once circumstances are (even mildly) defined, the unsettling suffocation of societal predestination sets in. The uncertainty of the future, being controlled by the invisible hand of societal norms, can resign a person to a bleak sense of status quo. Though it is a sad film, the aesthetics are incredible and there are hints of David Lynch sprinkled throughout it.

But enough with the pontificating. Buy the album, watch the film, find those glimmering moments of hope and love in life and never let them go.

South Dakota indie-rockers We All Have Hooks For Hands [MySpace] have a new album coming out November 17th: The Shape Of Energy. This following track is one that I can’t stop listening to this morning, “Made Up Of Tiny Lights”. After an exhaustive search (read: I was sent an email), I found this great live performance that I wanted to share with my loyal readers and friends. It was shot from within a friend’s practice space in Minneapolis and illustrates what makes this group “one to watch”.

When I think Bishop Allen [MySpace], I have to admit I usually don’t think dancing go-go girls, but after this video, I might. The latest video from Grrr…, “True or False”, features the lead vocals of Darbie Nowatka Rice and if the black and white clip doesn’t make you think of a kinder and gentler time (ironically during the Cold War), then you have either no soul or no taste of history. Also, you probably hated Rohan and Martin’s Laugh-In which I find troubling.

I really do like the contrast of Darbie’s voice to Justin’s but I am also partial to other husband-wife combos (see: The Submarines).

Bishop Allen are currently on tour with Throw Me the Statue and Darwin Deez.

Don’t call me insensitive for having a laugh at the hopes and dreams of an aspiring artist, but this cat Bangs [Official] really sucks. I don’t care if he’s from another country, so is Akon and he doesn’t totally suck, I just don’t listen to him. Bangs, however, sucks in a way that makes you want to root for him. He’s funny and quirky and has does that “rapping foreigner/Tupac” thing really well.

Everyone has had their say about this guy so far but holy crap, I love him. Bangs, you’re my hero. Here’s an excerpt of me trying to convince a prominent urban culture blogger that she should love him too:

BoredStork: he’s trying very hard
BoredStork: he never lie
BoredStork: and he wants to take you to the movie and he even got the popcorn
BoredStork: he knows what you like

Said friend is STILL shaking her head at me.

Check out the clip of “Take U To Da Movies” “after the jump”

“Bangs is a 19 year old rap artist born in North Khartoum, Sudan. At the age of 11, he moved to Egypt with his family after his Father married another wife. He spent two years there before coming to Australia in 2003.

He has been writing rap, hip hop and pop since settling in Melbourne in 2004.

“Music is my wife”, Bangs sang in a live jam recently. He writes about life, love and hope and his music grows with him till the end of life.

He recorded his first demo “Girlfriend” in 2005 with DJ Wasabi in Collingwood, then started to lay down tracks in his home studio.

In July 2008, he recorded his first professional album at Gateway Living Music Studios, titled “Hard to be Up”. Produced by John Favaro and Paul Last name, it features the new hit single “Take U to Da Movies”.

The name “Hard To Be Up” means that he worked so hard to put the songs together to make the album.

He is constantly stretching his creative abilities, and is already working on his next album, with the working title “Am Still Moving On”.”

“…Spanking Finn with My Microphone Hairbrush”

Glee: The Music, Volume 1 is a bundle of musical entertainment that will leave you giddy…if you’re a fan of Glee. The popularity of the show has created millions of self-proclaimed “Gleeks,” all who will find this soundtrack charming and exactly what they’ve been waiting for from the McKinley High School troupe.

The soundtrack comes stocked with key numbers ranging from rock classics like Queen’s “Somebody to Love” to current R&B hits like Rihanna’s ”Take a Bow,” to Broadway hits like Wicked’s “Defying Gravity.” And it achieves what it sets out to do – provide an hour of sing-along fun from a quirky television show that would make any fan reach for their hairbrush microphone.

But those who haven’t been captivated by the show should stay away, because if the glittery, sparkle-fest that basically IS this famous Glee club hasn’t enchanted you yet, you’ll find this volume of 17 tracks simply bad karaoke style noise

Brooklyn’s own Yeasayer [MySpace] are prepping for a February 19th release for their new album, Odd Blood, but that doesn’t mean it is too soon to check out the first single. “Ambling Alp” was just released this morning and it effing rips. Sign of good things to come? I hope so. November 3, Secretly Canadian will release “Ambling Alp” digitally and on limited edition 12″ vinyl. The vinyl version will come in a colored metallic sleeve, and will feature remixes from Memory Tapes and DJ /rupture.

Go to the band’s official site to download it [Official Site] or check out the stream here [via Pitchfork]

I effing loved All Hour Cymbals, the band’s 2007 debut, so this will beyond rad.

“Thousands of miles, thousands of images. On tour with their new album Gather, Form & Fly, Megafaun was captured, piece by piece, by the photographer Tim Lytvinenko. Part-documentary, part-sense memory, Tim’s images took on a life of their own as he traveled across the west with the band, the music, the landscape, and everything in between. He set his first magical trademark sequences to the album’s epic and beautiful “Impressions of the Past” — and a video was born.

Further shaped across the plains, the mountains, the coast, and the desert of North America, the video became a daily experience for the band on tour. Tim’s memories became everyone’s, almost just as real as the moments they documented. This seemed to be the perfect expression of this song — one that came by surprise, and one that conjures up the collective nostalgia of Summer 2009, and perhaps all those bygone seasons before.”

Hale. It’s also pretty great. After the jump, you can watch it, okay?

Asthmatic Kitty Records will release Dead Zone Boys, the third full-length from Indianapolis quartet, JOOKABOX (formerly Grampall Jookabox) on November 3, 2009. As anticipation continues to grow for Dead Zone Boys, Asthmatic Kitty recording artist Rafter has put together a Halloween mixtape built from remixes of the spookiest tracks from Dead Zone Boys, and the previous JOOKABOX album Ropechain. An equally perfect soundtrack for trick or treaters and late night dance parties, the JOOKABOX Halloween Megamix also features JOOKABOX, DM Stith, and Rafter collaborating on a cover of Michael Jackson’s classic “Thriller”.

While my dreams of soccer glory might have ended in college (let’s face it, I probably wasn’t going to play anywhere of substance), my rock star dreams have lived on past the realization that I do, in fact, have sausage fingers. Combining my love for all things Guitar Hero and footie, well, that definitely got my attention when I saw the clip last night.

The concept of “Football Hero” was dreamed up by Phil Clandilon and Steve Milbourne, the creative geniuses behind Editor’s Street View Hack and will be used to promote the new Kasabian [MySpace] single, “Underdog”. It features a talented bunch of soccer freestylers and three foot high pads like you’d find on the plastic guitars. The difference: they’re playing it with balls that they’ve kicked at the “screen”. It’s ridiculous, it’s amazing, it’s beyond words.

It stinks when you come down with an illness during any music festival, but especially one with the size and value of last week’s CMJ. After Thursday night’s shows, that was pretty much it for me last week, but not for my After the Jump brethren who on top of hold after parties every night, put on some of the most talked about shows of the week.

Yesterday, Pat from Pop Tarts Suck Toasted posted some great clips that he was able to take from the week (next year I will prepare my immune system better!) and you should definitely head over and check a few out. The one pictured above is the Sound Fix performance of “Kettering” by The Antlers [MySpace]. I wish I was there, but sometimes you just have to rest, people, especially when you feel like ass.

Not sure what you ladies and fellas have on your agendas tonight for CMJ, but I wanted to tell you where you’d find the RE crew: Pop Gun Booking’s Unofficial CMJ Party. Tonight at Glasslands Gallery it will be an amazing evening of fun, laughter and tons o’ rawkus music, so if you haven’t already RSVP’d for this show (look at the effing bill below, people!) do it immediately! You don’t want to miss out on a chance to get the reduced rate, do you?

The party’s overpacked line-up will feature live performances by headliner Francis & The Lights, Takka Takka, Pattern Is Movement, the UK’s Let’s Wrestle, Drink Up Buttercup, Naked Hearts, and Bottle Up & Go, culminating in an after party fueled by the charming lo-fi tunes and dancing debauchery of Darwin Deez, with DJ sets by Anamanaguchi and Spencerkeazzz

For reduced entry and free Rolling Rock, you can RSVP at rsvp@popgunbooking.com, or visit www.popgunbooking.com/cmjpartyrsvp for more info.

Get more deets “after the jump”

Those unfamiliar with Francis & The Lights won’t be for very long. Performing live, enigmatic frontman Francis Farewell Starlite, dark and severe, stands in stark contrast to the understated electro-funk that simmers below his burning howl. Darting around stage in panicked fits of energy, Francis could get a late night party moving in the dead of winter.

Pattern Is Movement will be traveling from Philadelphia to make their only CMJ appearance at the party, and UK garage-pop trio Let’s Wrestle, who opened for the Black Lips at Music Hall of Williamsburg back in March, will be jumping the pond to grace the stage as well.

It’s no small secret that the UK produces some infectious new artists every year and sits among my favorite places for discovering emerging artists. The Newcastle foursome of Little Comets [MySpace] are another in a long ling of bands bringing a high degree of energy and polish to not only their recorded material, but stage show while still incorporating the witty vocal banter indicating their youth and whimsy. Think Modest Mouse pre-Johnny Marr. Or post-Johnny. Not sure if you even like Johnny. Let’s leave him out of this as I happen to like him, but think he sort of made me hate Modest Mouse.

As we wait for the new Vampire Weekend or another Futureheads release (or for someone to recreate Who Killed the Zutons?) to quell our dispiriting want for warm-and-fuzzy grooves, these fine young lads will have to do. They are currently on tour in the UK with The Twang and The Noisettes, but the band will release their first single “Adultery” through Columbia Records next week.

“From Staten Island, that bubbling indie-rock hotbed, come Cymbals Eat Guitars [MySpace] on our next episode of Dirty Laundry.
For Seth Smith and his band Dog Day [MySpace], their rise to Canadian notoriety began in 2005 – a new project following the demise of his former band, The Burdocks, and features Nancy Urich (also of The Burdocks) and KC Spidle & Crystal Thili of hardcore act, The Hold.

This new release, Elder Schoolhouse is a limited edition, vinyl only release available through Divorce Records and could be best described as ” a collection of five songs that show Dog Day at their most experimental…still centering their sound around propulsive beats and haunting melodies”.

Check out “Synastry”, the lead single, “after the jump”

[mp3] Dog Day – “Synastry”

[mp3] Dog Day – “Happiness” (off Concentration)

Earlier in the year, Dog Day released the highly acclaimed, Concentration (Outside Music). The album’s sparse notes, hushed vocals and splintering drum beats sound like a cross-section of scenes that existed in Manchester and Athens in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth), Coke Machine Glow raved that the LP is, “…the future of indie rock.”

The new line-up led Smith’s songs down a more punk-influenced path of power-chords and one-note leads. Dog Day’s debut EP, Thank You, debuted at #8 in Canada on the !earshot campus radio charts quickly earned them national attention.

The band returned in 2007 with its acclaimed debut LP, Night Group (Tomlab/Black Mountain). The album was built on driving rhythms that carried the song’s cathartic lyrics at a blinding pace. “This is a more modern Halifax sound, though, punctuated by effortless gems like ‘End of the World’ which echoes like Eric’s Trip covering Interpol.” (Spin) “…the album seems to get better with each song, with ‘Oh Dead Life’ sparkling as if it was to be included on a tribute album to The Cure.” (Billboard)
