Justice in Arizona is the best fee-based iron mask in American history: a fully-lock steppin' double-edged sword of property-based conceits, where there is typically no right answer for the defendant, who is, in, say, the case of a pot bust, faced with a system that fails to follow even voter-approved medical marijuana laws, while at the same time providing a federal-crime-based punishment enclosure for those it can snare in its crabby net, trying to trip them up, and toy with them, while sucking the air out of even the assholes of the poor, in order to obtain even the smallest of fees ... And its logic? You'd have to go back a long way, to maybe the ages of the Spanish Inquisitions, for any comparisons to even remotely conjure it all up ...

Just to warm up a bit, I thought I'd tell you something about my day, yesterday, which I found very interesting. I went to the creek; we went to the creek, but, forgot our dog. Next time, we bring the dog. Also this, we acted like we owned the place. But no, that's not right, either, because we actually own very little. I mean, I have a Wilco CD, for example, still. And some other stuff. But not very much. Don't really care all that much about what I own: It's all more than I can use at any particular time, so I am blessed with too much stuff.

Dang. The dog needs to pee now. This sucks because I had a story about going down to the creek that I wanted to tell you, but now ... shitsville ... can't do that now. But, to warm some things up, I'll say that after I awoke from my meditation at the creek, I came up with this little story to tell later on, which I did not tell anyone because, well, I got lazy. Plus, there were other issues. Things I cannot say. Hmmm ... seem to be writing a novel now ... I call that novelism, now.

Anyway, the cool part of the story goes like this: Conquistodore and the Jesuit priest come all of the way up north and find themselves at the edge of the Grand Canyon. They go "shit," as in, "no bueno." They are on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. They can go no further north. Not without having to go a mile straight down, that is. Looks pretty suicidal. With nothing but sky above, and, as I was saying before I told you the dog needed to pee, nothing to look at but a shitload of misery straight down.

But Conquistodore is, if nothing else, ambitious. Like Gordon Gecko, "Greed Is Good," always ready for the rumble. He looks at his annoying conquer-mate, the Jesuit priest, and they just shrug. They can read each others minds: "We'll send a slave down there to do our bidding."

So they tell the slave, probably their least favorite but most cooperative Aztec captivee, "Look, here's what we want you to do ... take this here 12-foot rope and go down there ... See if we can cross that river way down there, so we can go on, you know, doing God's work (i.e. continue our plundering of the earth and the murdering of it's people, in order to 'save' them.)"

The slave jumps at the opportunity. Finally, he thinks, a way to get away from these guys. He's given his orders: "First," says the Conquistodore dude, "Find out if they have any gold. Next, take this rope, and then tell them what you understand about Christ Our Lord, and then tie them up, burn them, so they can all be saved."

The slave does this. Meanwhile, the party on the Rim stood around and considered the benefits of something that would later be invented. It will be called a "leafblower." Nobody is sure if the slave made it all of the way down to the river, which later became known as the Colorado River, because he never came back. The Conquistodore and the annoying Jesuit priest left with their party of "converts" and slaves as such, probably turned right.

Time for the doggie to piss. It's the humane thing to let it do, ya know?

But what can you expect from such a timeless place of such beauty and separation from the rest of America, mixed up with a melting pot of people literally driven mad by the heat, then massaged with tourism dollars seizing them, for a few months, with perfect praise, in the winter. Doomed in 1912, they were, I believe, with a failure to lock into daylight savings time ... same year as the Titanic ... and a few decades before that, by a territorial history of genocide and hidden greed. And now, this, from a blogger at Salon.com ...
If you thought perhaps one of the perennial voices of the crusty old silent majority, Merle Haggard, who once sang "Okie from Muskogee" and the other counter-counter culture hit of his period, opposing the Vietnam War anti-war movement, "The Fightin' Side of Me," might certainly be feeling like a caged old country crooner who might support Arizona's new immigration bill.
If you think that ... think again.
According to the seventh paragraph of a Page 56 story in the May 6-12, 2010 edition of New Times Phoenix, written by Martin Cizmar, Haggard lawyered up and out against the new law:
"I think it's unconstitional. You know, you see the guy on TV ... the Mexican kid that's fixing to leave home and go fight (in Iraq), and he was born here and if he wasn't in uniform, they'd profile him. That's not right ... There certainly something that needs to be done about the border ... there's no doubt about that ... but you can't just jump up and criminalize everybody."
Will any celebrity with an opinion on the topic ever speak in favor, as opposed to against the new law? Where's Willie Nelson? Arizona needs a new jingle for a new marketing image to fix this immigration blowout mess ...
For some suggestions on how Gov. Jan Brewer might pursue this marketing campaign, see ...
Let Glenn Beck Slink Away from This Somehow ...Fox News is getting increasingly nullified by mere outpourings of recoveries of their own hateful drivel and paranoia ... I hope ... We in the media criticism business, who often analyze events off of the top of the roofs of our dirty little mouths that roar, are all twin engines of the same double-edged word-swords ... I did the same thing myself right after the Tucson Massacre ... even if I still believe I was right about the suicide cultists are who are pouring gas on this fire, this failure by Fox News, and the Republican plutocratic right, to live in good faith, in term of the American social contract to simply "let us be" ... But my sense of the new call for civility in social discourse, which always should have been there to begin with, shouldn't be allowed to disarm the media, too, which still needs to do its job of speaking truth to power .. or, in this case, when misplaced power is actually this guy Beck, a kingpin, like Limbaugh, of hate speech ... They need to be put in a ring, to duke it out, or just sit looking at a mirror to listen to their own voices for a while ...

Since last Saturday's shooting in Tucson I have received several more calls to return to this state, which may or may not be my actual home, and I might agree, since my short life in Iowa hasn't really been much better. The furor armed with guns and religion is ubiquitous, it seems. Yeah, I've met a lot of good people along the way. But I'm still trying to get over the PTSD episode of hate speech and head games played on this old unicorn while taking a measly hayride and the subsequent games played on me while at this bar in bummed out, burned out Winfield, Iowa. Yeah, there were good folks there, too. People I'd love to see again. But go back there anytime soon. No way. Feeling the same way about Arizona, right now. Though my family is there and my concern for them is just about breaking me down to tears every hour on the hour. Nope, I say, stay on the road. Seems to be the sad fact of my life as some kind of wandering Creative American. In the meantime, enjoy the streaming heartbreak of music of Radio Free Arizona, the culmination (so far) of what my old column of the same name at the now dead Scottsdale Progress, and then, Where It's Hot magazine was envisioned as in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during the years of Bush I, before the first Gulf War. I mean, I could just keep going back, pealing the onion. But I'd end up, going back back back, trying to ascertain the cause and effect, of why I am the way I am. And who has time for that ... nope, the music and the people I love, are everything ... for all of you strangers out there, even the good friends, who never really understood me, or did, more than I did myself, I send you this loving gift ... our pirate radio station, at least one of its many current faces now ... in this world of divergent metamedia ... Radio Free Arizona.

As many have done ... since the "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" vibe has really come unto acceptance of being completely, like, retro. Journos such as myself can only howl now with jealousy because not everybody gets to be Bill Maher these days, and his raunchy note to the Republican Party, every bit as divisive and politically incorrect as Beck, Limbaugh and Poppa Bear, was certainly one of the talking head highlights of the week.

But Beck came to Phoenix for his stadium tour, and we aren't talking about the cool singer/songwriter who analyzes the earth with such songs as "Sex Laws." This is the guy who has unburied all of the mythic ghosts of the Illuminati for a broad audience, rendered as a distracting voice, yes, for Fox News listeners who, for all we know, are now completely hypnotized by the very Ruppert Murdoch-esque forces Beck supposedly rails on about.

Oh yeah, Beck went beautiful mind before national audiences this year, conjuring the very ghosts of McCarthy and the Rothchilds and the Bilderbergers and the "None Dare Call It Conspiracy" crowd, somehow managing to swoop in the Green Party and progressives with a sweep of his piece of chalk on the blackboard as well, drawing it all up for us to prove only one thing: An overwhelmed mind is a relevance machine.

For any imagintor with a limited receiver, even one with a cable TV show with all the props and graphics he might need to illustrate his ranting, Beck is also, if nothing else, a canary in a coal mine. However, to watch a canary get sick and die is hardly reason to put much faith in its last dying chirp.

Nonetheless, it all plays well in Arizona. A state, which, let's face it, appears to be experiencing all of the symptons South Africa faced as it elected its first actual African as president. A state completely freaked out by its economic mess, its furies along the southern border, its long-standing tradition of Goldwater-style individualism run amok, featuring whole cities of voters in gated communities who dislike change in general, and that includes the weather. Not just swinging to the right, but in many ways defining it nationally, Arizona is perched to be that place where the Mechamites (see Evan Mecham) are returing for one last dying breath.

Of course, Palin is trying to get on top of all of this ... but my guess is, as a pop star, she's appearing on the scene a little early, and as a performance artist goes, is likely to simply malaprop her way right out of contention ... given the odds of a mispeak over the long haul ...

~ RFA

Arizona Burning

With so many history buffs in Arizona, it's hard to understand why the name Evan Mecham didn't come up more often during the debates, protests and spontaneous quiet riots that broke out in every heart and household of the region with the passage of the new immigration law.
Evan Mecham was the Arizona governor who brought great shame and embarrassment to the state when he cancelled the Martin Luther King holiday. It created a blowback of economic catastrophes such as cancelled conventions. The Super Bowl was taken away by the NFL. The state become a comedic punching bag and Arizonans were commonly asked, when traveling, why their state was racist.
Then came the pop stars. A cascade of them started playing concerts here, such as Stevie Wonder, to protest Mecham. Next, every concert performer had to say something about Mecham, or the state's racist stance, for the cache of, well, actually "playing Sun City," but not liking the vibe so much.
In this next round, there will be key differences. In taking a stance in favor of an MLK holiday back then, the issue was idealistic, abstract ... and therefore manageable as propaganda. Human rights, sure, yeah ... why not ... rock on! Who couldn't back that? Other than those who put Mecham in office to begin with ... you know, that ever aging race of Goldwater Republicans ... yeah, sure, rock on Garth! A paid state holiday for everyone!
In this case, while it's likely there will be a cascade of comedians and pundits making a lot of new material for the new immigration law, the toughest of its kind, it's hard to imagine how a Canadian like K.D. Lang or vagaband Celt like Bono could legitimately show up and make a big statement.
Such as this: Irish! Go home!
~ Radio Free Arizona
P.S. If Native American rock bands starting getting involved in this, most of us could all be in real trouble. I think we need a big Aid for Arizona concert, just like AID for Africa in the 1980s. I think the appropriate state policy would be to make sure all performers be required to wear the right color cowboy hats and, before playing, make sure they have their paperwork in order. Also this, Woody Guthrie covers should be avoided, discouraged at all times ...

In his thirties, certain once inert chemicals disperse in his brain causing him to wonder where that happy boy went. Then, in his forties, when the result of those energies are unleashed, when he’s finally determined that life is nothing but a bitch; when he’s reflecting on that all: Well then, he’s ready to become a regular Robert Earl Keen, Jr.
The Kerrville, Texas-based singer/songwriter’s productive cycle appears to be in that period when all of the trouble is finally being appreciated and the man finally settles down to a kind of childlike contentment, too.
For example, this fall, a new release will arrive that exemplifies his standing in the music community at the age of 54. In January 2007, numerous artists converged at the MusicFest at Steamboat Springs to honor Keen, performing interpretations of Keen’s influential material at the popular festival’s annual Tribute to a Legend gala. The recording, “Live Is Good,” is slated for release by Right Avenue Records. In addition to performances by the full electric band backing Keen, it includes acoustic tribute performances by Cody Canada, Cory Morrow, Chris Knight, Jason Boland, Stoney LaRue, Bonnie Bishop, Reckless Kelly, Wade Bowen, Max Stalling, Micky, Gary, and Muzzie Braun, Walt Wilkins, Randy Rogers, Roger Creager, Matt Powell, Brandon Rhyder, Dub Miller, Doug Moreland, Matt Skinner, Kathleen Braun, Josh Grider, Darren Kozelsky, and Rich O’Toole.
But at the base of a curve of his mid-period career, in 1997, he made a small hit out of the song, “Over the Waterfall,” helping (with Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith and Ryan Adams, who was with Whiskeytown at the time) to practically invent a style of alt-country for the radio dial, with a line that goes: “The beauty of sadness is feeling the pain.” At that point Keen had gained ground in the creative sphere because of the sadness he found in his late thirties, early forties, with a song that began with the lines:

I slipped through your fingers
into the clouds
Ran down the concrete hallways
Pushed through the crowds.
I watched by the water
Reached for the sun
Why did I bother
What's done is done

Then, the chorus:

And all that's left of me now
Is waiting to drown
Over the waterfall (falling down)

Now, there’s a mandolin solo pushing “Waterfall” along to it’s over-the-edge apogee of intended sorrow.
Because that riff, and those lines, reveal Keen in a nutshell: Finding the beauty in the pain revealed by a singer/songwriter who, at his best, has a penchant for serving up his lyricism on a very tough hook. Rendered almost journalistically deadpan. As just a passing observation.
Indeed, a major exegesis could be written about that Keen standard, recorded at the age of 34, “The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends,” in which we find the protagonist, a waitress, Sherry, who gets the guy, Sonny, to drive her to Florida. The man finds the trouble, sure, but the woman ends up with all of the money, and her boyfriend goes to jail for a crime he, apparently, did not commit. Clearly, in this case, Keen’s English and journalism courses at Texas A&M were time well spent.
Cast within its small town savvy and strength of storytelling, its characters fully evolve into fully traveling denizens of the road. In terms of its hook about the party never ending, on all sides giving it new meaning each time the chorus is sung, ending the story with a Keen sense of irony, he is saying something else entirely.
Yes, a good part of his best creative period was spent likely musing on the most heartbreaking truths. There’s a dark sarcasm at work in “Party Never Ends.” Must be why he’s so tight with the college crowd staring into the abyss of the futureworld.
A decade ago, around age of 42, a little after the album “Picnic” was opening the door for his best work of those years to be recognized, he told Rolling Stone magazine, “I fight being jaded all the time. I love music -- all of my best memories have to do with musical experiences. But at the same time, I see people say things that they're going to do with their career, or hear them say they're going to tell people that it's going to be this way, and I want to just jump out and say, 'Don't do that! You're cutting your own throat! They're not going to listen to you, you're not going to change the world, you've got to work with it.' And that's where you get jaded -- you find out you don't change the world, you have to work within the world that you're walking in.”
Just trying to get a grip on Robert Earl Keen’s musical output here. And it often points to a sense of loss, and thus, rebirth. Because the road doesn’t go on forever. The party does end, and sure, that’s the beauty of feeling the pain.
