Only Radio Free Nachlaot has been broadcasting the entire 9 Days of Jerry, usually from August 1st through 9th in accordance with his birthday and day of death on the solar calendar - except when the Hebrew calendar makes us delay the start because of Tisha b'Av (as it does this year).

Steve Levine and Lorelai Kude founded Radio Free Nachlaot in Jerusalem during Chodesh Kislev of 2009. Radio Free Nachlaot is commercial-free kosher hippie style pirate internet radio - we sell no ads, and once a year we ask you for your generous help!

Radio Free Nachlaot is 100% listener-supported nonprofit internet radio, streaming 24/6 from Jerusalem to the world! Our annual 9 Days of Jerry, celebrating the life, music, and legacy of Jerry Garcia z"l, is now in its 13th year, and 13 is Hebrew Gematria for "ahavah" which means LOVE.

We'll be broadcasting all things Jerry this year from August 8 through 18 (the 9DOJ is "delayed" this year due to Tisha b'Av) and asking for your support! Founded in November 2009, Radio Free Nachlaot (named for Nachlaot, Jerusalem's own Haight-Ashbury) celebrates the 9 Days of Jerry by playing all Jerry / Grateful Dead / Dead-centric / Jerry-adjacent music during the "9 Days" - the "Days Between" Jerry Garcia's birthday August 1st and the anniversary of his passing August 9th. The rest of the year we play the Grateful Dead and all your favorite Jewish, Israeli, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass/Jewgrass, Indie and World Music 24/6 on our non-commercial, 100% listener-supported internet radio stream.

Now we've arrived at our 11th ANNUAL 9 DAYS OF JERRY, during this immensely weird year of Covid. It's that time again... time for Our Annual Fundraiser for the only Internet Radio Station in the World bringing the music, talk and Torah of Nachlaot from Jerusalem (and Berkeley) to the World!

Once a Year we treat our world-wide listening audience to all Jerry and Jerry-centric programming for "The 9 Days of Jerry". Most years those 9 days correspond to August 1-9, unless (like this year) Tisha b'Av doesn't fall until after Jerry's birthday.

This year (2019 / 5779) we're doing The 9 Days of Jerry: The Nidcha Edition! Beginning around Midnight August 12 after the (delayed) Fast of Tisha b'Av, continuing all the way until August 23 (excluding Shabbos Jerry and including a double Isru-Jerry), we'll be bringing Jerry to the internet radio waves 24/6.

WE ARE AN ALL-VOLUNTEER, LISTENER SUPPORTED INTERNET RADIO STATION! NOBODY HAS EVER BEEN PAID TO DO WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS! WE'RE HERE FOR LOVE, NOT MONEY!

But it costs money to operate our streaming service, maintain our equipment, and deal with broadcast emergencies like (G*d forbid, lo alaynu) blown-up laptops, etc.

Fire On The Moshav!

The recording studio and home of musician Aryeh Naftali of Israel's favorite Grateful Dead cover band The Elevators went up in flames last week along with 40+ other homes on Moshav Mevo Modiin ("Shlomo's Moshav") in Israel.

The Moshav is one of the most special places in the world. It's literally the location the idea for Radio Free Nachlaot itself was born, during a Moshav Country Fair during Chol haMoed Sukkot in 2008.

We've broadcasted live from the Moshav many a time, and Moshav friends such as Aryeh Naftali and master aromatherapist Avraham Sand have been guests on our station many times as well.

We'll Be Off The Air for The 9 Days - But Back Before The 9 Days of Jerry!

As per our minhag in recent years, we'll be off the air for the 9 Days between Rosh Chodesh Av (Friday, July 13th) and Tisha b'Av, returning to our 24/6 broadcast schedule after the Fast.

This year the Fast of Tisha b'Av is delayed because of Shabbat, so it is observed on Sunday, July 22nd. The fast ends at 8:12pm Jerusalem time. Because it's actually the 10th of Av, we'll be starting the radio back up sometime later that evening - stay tuned & Steve will let us know exactly when.

Don't forget - Radio Free Nachlaot's 9th Annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY begins Wednesday, August 1st! We'll run until Shabbos begins, Jerusalem time, on Friday August 3rd, and we'll be off for "Shabbos Jerry" until Saturday evening, August 4th. We'll go strong all week long bringing you the best of the legacy of Jerry Garcia until Friday, August 10th ("Isru Jerry").

We're driving the #9DOJ bus all the way to Shabbos - "Shabbos Jerry", when we are blessed to be able to perform the biggest Kiddush HaShem we can do the entire year - we shut down the radio for Shabbos (like we do every week). But "why is this week different from every other week"? Because it's our annual "9 Days of Jerry" and we have 10X or more our normal listening audience hanging on our every note. People from countries you'd never suspect are listening. We turn off for Shabbos and turn back on Moetzi Shabbos, Jerusalem time, when the #9DOJ will continue all the way through "Isru Jerry" (Friday August 11th).

Radio Free Nachlaot's 7th annual 9 DAYS OF JERRY begins Sunday night, August 14th, after 11pm Jerusalem time and continues unabated and unabashedly through the end of Tuesday August 23rd, breaking only for "Shabbos Jerry" (this year Parshat Va'etchanan).

Because 5776/2016 is the 19th year of the 19 year Metonic Cycle, silly. :)

Here is a picture of Matisyahu visiting Radio Free Nachlaot's studios at the Jerusalem Media Group's in 2011, where he was interviewed by Steve Levine, and recorded "Some Day" with our friend Hermie Wolf.

We're honoring Matis today on RFN for the high road he took when BDS bullied Rototom Sunsplash into demanding he alone of the dozens of artists make a political statement in order to play. He declined. They cut him from the bill. Antisemitism in the very last place it should be - the musical community. We are officially disgusted.

We find it offensive that not a single one of the dozens of other artists were asked to make a political statement in order to perform at the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain. Only the Jew. We find it offensive that the organizers of Rototom caved to BDS activist demands to single out the only Jewish performer to be examined for his politics. We find it offensive that other artists were not informed of the actions of the Rototom Sunsplash organizers and didn't have the opportunity to protest or to stand with Matisyahu; many of them didn't even hear what was happening until it showed up on social media.

This was Matisyahu's statement today:

"The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement. They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people. I support peace and compassion for all people. My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music. Music has the power to transcend the intellect, ideas, and politics, and it can unite people in the process. The festival kept insisting that I clarify my personal views; which felt like clear pressure to agree with the BDS political agenda. Honestly it was appalling and offensive, that as the one publicly Jewish-American artist scheduled for the festival they were trying to coerce me into political statements. Were any of the other artists scheduled to perform asked to make political statements in order to perform? No artist deserves to be put in such a situation simply to perform his or her art. Regardless of race, creed, country, cultural background, etc, my goal is to play music for all people. As musicians that is what we seek. - Blessed Love, Matis"

It's the halcyon days of 1977/78 on Radio Free Nachlaot!

halcyon days. noun. a period of peace and happiness; an idyllic time; also, a period of calm weather during the winter solstice. Word Origin. Greek Alkyone a legend of fourteen windless days.

Everybody's got their favorite Jerry period. Few dispute that the 76-79 era were, relatively speaking to what came before and what would follow, the halcyon days of Jerry's creativity.

Starting about 8:30am Israel time on Thursday morning, we'll be hearing the Grateful Dead 5/25/77 at the Baltimore Civic Center, 10/2/77 at the Paramount Theater, and 5/22/77 at the Sportatorium, Penbroke Pines, Florida. About 4:20pm (yes, and not on purpose either!), we'll hear the Jerry Garcia Band 3/18/78 at the Warner Theater.
