Harrow Borough FC faces a 2025 financial crisis after a land deal failed. The club now seeks urgent funding to cover rising rates and stay open for its fans.

In a candid interview with Radio Harrow, James Clouting, the Social Media and Press Manager for Harrow Borough FC, detailed the dire financial situation currently threatening the 93-year-old club. The crisis stems from a collapsed deal with property developers, which was intended to secure the club’s future at their Earlsmead ground.

The Broken Promise

According to Clouting, a deal was struck in the summer of 2025 to sell the ground to developers. In exchange, the club was promised a two-to-three-season “grace period” to relocate, with the developers funding the football budget during this transition. However, the first critical payment never arrived, leaving the club in a precarious position as they approach the new financial year.

Rising Costs and Community Impact

The financial strain is exacerbated by a significant hike in business rates. Clouting revealed that rates are set to jump from £1,200 to £1,800 per month—a 50% increase that the club simply cannot afford.

“If Harrow Borough is going to stay in the community… we can’t take a hit like that,” Clouting urged, appealing to local counselors for assistance.

The club serves as a vital community hub, hosting:

The Tanglewood Club: A social group for young adults with learning disabilities.

Local groups: Regular meetings for the Gurkhas and various music nights.

Media productions: The venue for ITV’s Changing Ends.

A Call to Action

A Supporters Trust has been formed to raise urgent funds to ensure the club can start the next season. While four potential investors have shown interest, nothing is finalized. Fans are encouraged to attend the upcoming home games against Hendon (Easter Monday) and Southall (April 25th) to show their support. Donations can be made via the official club website to help preserve this historic institution for future generations.

Harrow Litter Pickers is a volunteer charity of 1,500 residents removing 15 skips of trash monthly to restore pride and community safety across the borough.

What started five years ago as a handful of concerned neighbors has blossomed into a borough-wide movement. The Harrow Litter Pickers, recently minted as a registered charity, is proving that local action can drive significant social change.

Led by founder Casey, the group has grown from a small collective in South Harrow to an impressive network of over 1,500 volunteers. Their impact is undeniable: the group extracts between 10 to 15 skips worth of rubbish every single month. During their annual “Great British Spring Clean,” they target entire neighborhoods and up to ten local parks in a concentrated effort to restore local beauty.

Beyond the Rubbish

While the primary goal is a cleaner Harrow, Casey emphasizes that the movement is about much more than trash.

“It’s about taking ownership of where you live,” Casey explained in a recent interview. “When you step out and care for your street, you build a connection with your neighbors. We’ve seen that in areas with active volunteers, issues like fly-tipping actually decrease because there’s a new sense of accountability.”

The charity works in close partnership with the Harrow Council, which provides essential equipment like hoops and litter pickers, while the group utilizes distinct purple volunteer bags to signal to the community that a neighbor is at work.

Surprising Discoveries

The job isn’t without its surprises. While the group has recovered nearly 100 knives and three guns, all handed over to the police, they also find “vintage” litter from the 1970s and even Victorian-era artifacts. One notable find, a smelly Chelsea football shirt salvaged from a fly-tip, ended up fetching £100 on eBay, providing vital funds for graffiti removal supplies.

Get Involved

The Harrow Litter Pickers offer flexible volunteering opportunities, including a popular Duke of Edinburgh scheme for local youth. Residents interested in joining the “treasure hunt” or donating to the cause can find the group on Facebook or contact them at harrowlitterpickers@outlook.com.

Supporting Children Through Therapy and Play

The charity has successfully raised a phenomenal amount of money, specifically donating to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) where Riya received care. Contributions include:

Music Therapy: £30,000 was donated to support healing through music, a passion of Riya’s.

Play Therapy: £20,000 went toward play therapy to help children communicate during their recovery.

Play Sensory Area: £80,000 supported the construction of a new sensory zone at the GOSH Cancer Centre.

Family Room Refurbishment: The charity kitted out an intensive care unit family room with new toys and games to support siblings.

Community and Holiday Magic

Beyond hospital support, Riya’s Rainbows partners with organizations like Grief Encounter and SLOW (Surviving the Loss of Your World) to provide counseling and workshops for grieving families. They also support local schools with essential items like hats, scarves, and equipment for forest school programs.

Currently, the charity is running its annual Christmas Present Drive to spread holiday magic. They are collecting new, unwrapped gifts for children aged 0 to 18, including sensory toys, electronics, pajamas, and toiletries. Donations are distributed to GOSH and other partner charities to brighten the season for children in need. Supporters can contribute until December 7 by contacting the charity via their website or Instagram.

We spoke with Dennis, a dedicated community leader who cofounded the organization with his wife, Sue. While often mistaken for a charity, Dennis clarifies that Harrow Striders is a business that partners with local groups to deliver impactful community activities. The initiative began nine years ago following Sue’s retirement from a forty year career in education. To keep her engaged, the couple discovered Nordic walking, a fitness technique inspired by cross country skiers.

What is Nordic Walking?

Dennis describes Nordic walking as “crossfit in the outdoors”. It involves walking with specialized poles that propel the individual forward, engaging the upper body and cardiovascular system while reducing strain on the knees and hips. For beginners, Harrow Striders offers a six week “total body walking” program that transitions participants from standard walking to rhythmic pole techniques.

Community and Mental Health

The organization utilizes Harrow’s thirty one parks, frequently walking through scenic locations like Stanmore Country Park and Wood Farm. Beyond physical fitness, Dennis emphasizes the mental health benefits of these group walks. With a participant base that is 95% female, the group provides a safe, non judgmental environment where people can disconnect from technology and connect with nature.

Movember and Men’s Health

As November approaches, Dennis is spearheading a “Movember” campaign to raise awareness for men’s health. Having survived heart failure fifteen years ago, he is passionate about encouraging men to discuss their struggles. On November 29, Harrow Striders will host a major event at Rickmansworth, partnering with Parkrun to promote awareness for prostate cancer and mental wellbeing. Dennis encourages everyone to join the team and help demystify health conversations for both men and women.

Faith Cole shares a touching musical tribute to her Nan and the Meadow House Hospice, highlighting the vital role of palliative care and personal memories.

In a touching interview with Radio Harrow, fourteen year old Faith Cole shared the inspiration behind her debut song titled “One More Time.” The track serves as a deeply personal tribute to her grandmother, who passed away two years ago at the age of 69 after a courageous six year battle with cancer. During her final years, Faith’s grandmother received essential support and care from Meadow House Hospice, a local facility that the Cole family credits with providing immense comfort and pain management during a difficult time.

Faith described her grandmother as an incredibly brave and inspirational figure who never let her fear show, even in her hardest moments. This bravery, along with her grandmother’s lifelong love for music, motivated Faith to pick up the pen. While she had written small songs in the past, “One More Time” marks her first complete work and her first public performance, which took place at her school’s open evening. Faith handled the lyrics and chords herself, though she noted her father, an Elvis Presley tribute artist, served as a significant musical influence.

The core message of the song is a reminder to cherish every moment with loved ones. Faith explained that the title reflects the universal desire for just one last conversation or a final chance to say the things that matter most. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others to appreciate their time with family before it is gone. Looking ahead, Faith aspires to become a professional musician and plans to perform her tribute wherever possible to spread her message of love and gratitude for the support provided by hospice care.

Radio Harrow marks World Suicide Prevention Day by sharing vital resources and community stories to raise awareness and support mental health across the borough.

10 September 2025 is World Suicide Prevention Day.

There are more than 720,000 estimated suicide deaths every year. We can all play a part in helping its prevention.

It is important that we keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues throughout the year and take the time to ask ‘how are you?’ – something as small as this can have a huge impact on someone who is struggling.

Every life lost to suicide leaves behind family, friends, and communities grieving, and yet many who struggle feel unable to reach out for help.

How can you help if you think someone you know is struggling:

Check in with friends, family, or colleagues — even a simple “How are you, really?” can make a difference.

Listen without judgment if someone shares how they feel. You don’t need to have all the answers; being there is enough.

Know the signs of withdrawing, changes in mood, or talking about hopelessness may all be cries for help.

Remember that asking someone directly about suicidal thoughts does not increase their risk and can actually help them.

Signpost support and encourage them to seek professional help by sharing helpline numbers and details (Samaritans, SHOUT, NHS & Hub of Hope)

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, there is help available. You can contact:

Call the Samaritans on 116 123 – they are available to help 24/7 and calls are free.

Text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258 anytime day or night

You can visit your local A&E

For more local resources, visit the Hub of Hope at https://hubofhope.co.uk

This month, and every month, let’s remind each other that it’s okay to not be okay — and it’s always okay to ask for help.
