First radio M2M announcement from the Action camp Ter Apel by Mohamed Alsaid Salman from Bagdad, in Arab

Thursday 17th of May Open Air Day in the Camp with live radio M2M!!

M2M’s director Jo van der Spek drove to the action camp of undocumented migrants in Ter Apel on Monday 14th of May to give communication support to the growing movement of refugees on the street. The camp is now a week old and is growing to hundreds of people including women and children. As soon as we have power and connectivity we can start streaming and publishing the news directly from the action site.

More than 200 people from Iraq, Somalia, Iran and other countries have come to the common ground next to the deportation complex in the North of Holland.

They demand the right to live a decent life in the Netherlands, at least as long as they cannot return to their country for security reasons. The current government believes they can return safely and voluntarily. To force them they are denied all basic human rights like shelter, health care, etc.

You can support this movement by:

On the occasion of the action by refugees-on-the-street who started a camp outside the Collective Center at Ter Apel in the north of the Netherlands on the 8th of May, Jo van der Spek of M2M wrote the following column. These migrants are supposed to return voluntarily to their country, because the Dutch government believes that they are not in danger there. However the governemnt in Iraq refuses to take them back if they are forced. So they have nowhere to go to, no right to be here and no way to go there. But they act together for a chance to live and live better than before. Why not?

Welcoming the Iraqi Invasion Act

Finally it is not the USA that invades The Hague, in order to prevent the application of international justice to American citizens- soldiers. No, it’s Iraqi citizen-migrants occupying common ground in the north of the Netherlands in an effort to force a radical change in
the application of human justice to migrants that are so far denied acces and basic rights.

This act of occupation by a fast growing number of mainly Iraqi refugees-on-the-street is well timed and also well suited to create an uplifting experience amidst the general lethargy that still covers Holland like a blanket of mental smog.

Like so many times before in history an external agent, through an unexpected and autonomous action, is now intervening in the Dutch political landscape, at a moment that everyday political life is in a highly unstable state: no government, a parliament trying to gain legitimacy and a queen dying to hand-over sovereignty to her son. The direct cause for this current limbo lies in the response to the economic recession and the European conditions forcing even a rich country like Holland to take extreme measures of austerity. However, the cornerstone of change, the hinge on which the minds and hearts of a significant section of youth and mindful adults may move, is the approach towards migrants and world affairs in general. Poverty is moving in and migrants are dying on the shores of Europe. Soon we will be drifting together if we don’t take drastic action.

Finally we see the face of globalization reflected in the mirror that Brussels and Ter Apel are holding up for us to see. We see Geert Wilders as just another make-over of Batman, unmasking himself as just another copy cat of Pim Fortuyn, only adding to the pitiful frustration of the merciless masses voting for him, proving once again time for messiah is over. One man will not make the difference. Ask Obama.

Finally the Joker hits back. After two exercises last winter led by Somali brothers and sisters camping in the cold outside the deportation complex of Ter Apel, now the weather is fine and time is ripe for the real thing. These poor asylum seekers, strangled by foreign police and immigration service IND, mentally broken by the thousands in administrative detention, suffocated by laws and lawyers, made dependant on charity and church, are finally showing who they really are: human! They can really move! They are not victims but actors!
They can be tourists like you and me! So let us not help the occupiers in Ter Apel. Let us not support them, don’t give them tents, blankets or telephone credit. Do not bring your redundant laptops, I-pads or even worn-out army boots and leather jackets to their field of honour. No, embrace their exemplary autonomous action, join Ali Aziz and Hadi Abu Sanad like in the 16th century we embraced the House of Orange, invading the Dutch swamps at nearby Heiligerlee. Temperature is rising, parliamentary politics is exhausted, corporate business is selling out to China’s communists and Mexican coke dealers.
We got to save ourselves.

We are here, we the people, we make the difference, we have no borders to cross, we have no cross other than our own indulging in apathy. Let’s throw it off and start the summer. Leave your squat and camp out. Send your children abroad after the exams and restore disorder at home.
Forget your mortgage, bury your debts and love your neighbour.
Let migrants invade this place and help us chase away the ghosts of Rawagade, Srebrenica, the Schiphol Fire and most of all the mist of mental misery hanging over us.

Young Somali refugees who are forced to survive in the streets in Holland have taken the lead in organizing demonstrations and camps to demand their basic human rights. The Dutch right wing governments drive to harrass undocumented mighrants out of the country leads to thousands of humans from Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, Guinee and other countries having to live on the street. There is no shelter for them in official centers and the charity shelters that existed before are at best full or had to close for lack of money. Or the first time in Dutch history a powerful and proud group of illegalized refugees has taken action in its own hands, demanding a chance to live.
On Friday 20th of January Dutch activists join hands with the Somali activists for a “Public Conspiratorial Meeting” on how to make a change in Dutch migration politics. Together we can walk tall!

No more human beings on the street without a chance to live here or in their homeland.

Join the show, come to Amsterdam on January 20th from 4 p.m. till after midnight.

Again Ahmed Issa will be judged for his role in starting the fire in de
Detention Complex at Schiphol Oost in the night of October 26th 2005. He was
convicted in 2009 by the High Court of Amsterdam and deported to Libya
immediately after. Almost a year ago the Supreme Court ruled that the
verdict had to be destroyed. The essential injustice is that Ahmed Issa is
convicted for starting the fire, but nobody has been held responsible for
the impact of the fire: eleven dead undocumented migrants and many people
wounded for life.

Before Ahmed Issa comes to the trial he demands a guarantee that he wil not
be arrested like before. A clear answer has not come to our knowledge so
far.

Ahmed Issa is alive in Tripolis. He called M2M after the take-over of
Tripolis to say that he is okay. The situation was dangerous, people were
shooting their guns at random in the air and around. A bullets can hit
you by accident: “you cannot be faster than bullets”, he said. For more than
four months there was no contact by phone or email with our man in Tripolis.

In October survivors and friends, The Schiphol People, will again
commemorate the fire and the dead in various ways.

Listen to the final statement of the survivors after the trial on August 23rd 2009.

“We want to leave! Europe must help!” The demands on the cardboard signs of refugees and migrants at the Tunisian-Libyan border are clear – and compelling: 5000 people have been waiting for weeks and months in unbearable conditions in the camp of the UN High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Choucha. All of them managed to escape the escalating civil war in Libya. Many were employed as migrant workers, others had sought refuge from the war and crisis zones in Sub-Saharan-Africa. Survivors of capsized refugee boats meet in Choucha those who, arising out of despair and despite all dangers,
are setting off for the road back towards the Libyan border to risk the dangerous crossing to Europe. On the 5th of May 2011, when four refugees from Eritrea died at a fire in the improvised tent city, there were spontaneous protests and road blockades. The Tunisian
Military responded with tear gas, residents attacked the camp. At least two refugees were killed, many were badly injured.

The refugees in Choucha were and still are hoping for help and support from the UNHCR, which had requested the European countries, among others, several times during the recent weeks with the intake of at least 6,000 refugees from Libya. In vain. Rather, the European border agency Frontex is given more and more contracts and the new democratic governments in Northern Africa are lured with offers of money, so they continue to be the watchdogs on the southern rim of European borders.
The situation in Choucha must be seen in the context of the forward externalisation of the European border regime to Northern Africa. In the defense of refugees and migrants, the European countries have shamelessly worked together for years with the despots of the Maghreb, especially with Ben Ali in Tunisia and Qaddafi in Libya.
Now, indeed, the democratic transition is welcomed, but help is refused to all those who are stranded in the Tunisian refugee camps and for whom there is no return.

The voices of Choucha stand for the desperate protest against a policy of flagrant human rights violations, as they take place every day in many hot spots of Europe’s external borders. A break with this policy is necessary to stop the dying at sea and in the desert. The
democracy movements in Northern Africa provide the opportunity for a fresh start. Instead of fatal exclusion and grotesque threat scenarios, openness and solidarity must shape the future of the Mediterranean area. It needs bridges instead of walls for a new
African-European relationship in order that Europe becomes a place of real freedom, general security and equal rights for All.

The acceptance of refugees from Choucha in Europe would, in this sense, set a first, not just symbolic character. We therefore call on the responsible policymakers at the European level, in the federal government, states and municipalities,

- to take emergency aid measures and take in the refugees from Choucha and other temporary refugee camps in Europe.

- to provide humanitarian support for Subsaharan migrants, who were already flown out from Libya or Tunisia. For example just in Mali over 10,000 refugees have arrived since the beginning of the war in Libya.

- to give up the existing deportation policies at the external borders in favor of a humane and generous asylum and immigration policy that is consistent with the rights of refugees and migrants.

- to support the democratic upheavals in Northern Africa seriously and to understand it as an opportunity for a changing neighbourhood policy.

May 21st: Sedraoui is FEEE!

A judge ordererd his release after his laissez-passer expired. Sedraoui gained time by resisting his deportation. Also blood was found in his urine, which led the medical service to declare him “not fit to fly”.

Sedraoui is 14 months in prison. Three times they tried to deport him as an illegal alien. He resisted, once by swallowing a razor blade. He has been kicked around between 3 different prisons, being accused of organising resistance. He is resisting deportation to Morocco.

He is now at detention complex Schiphol Oost and gives us reports on his situation and on the situation in Block H.

April 27th, after the doctors visit, Sedraoui raconte in French.

Sedraoui needs treatment for his shoulder, that was injured by his guards. And he needs medical attention as a patient with Diabetes. He is losing his sight, being nearly blind in one eye. He wants glasses, to see.

His teeth are being pulled out one by one, without any replacement. He wants teeth, to eat.

And he wants all this fast, because in a couple of days the guards may kick him again, and kick him out of the country. To a place where he will surely not get the medical assistance he needs.

Kambiz Roustayi a 36 year old Iranian citizen set himself on fire on the steps of the National Monument for the victims of World War II on the Dam Square in Amsterdam last wednesday April 6. He died one day later in the hospital because of the wounds of his self-immolation. Kambiz Roustayi was a non-recognized political refugee, who had recently been refused again legal status in the Netherlands. Today a ceremony will be held by migration and refugee organizations on the spot where he performed his desperate deed. Bystanders rushed to the man and tried to extinguish the flames by beating their coats on the violent flames. On May fourth there will be once again the commemoration of those who fell in The War with all the state pomp that goes with it… The ashes of this Iranian will have been swept away, but a stain on the national Dutch conscience will remain…

Ssuuna Golooba was a photojournalist in his native Uganda. But, like many others, he thought he could make a more lucrative living in Europe. His documentary project Surprising Europe was featured on Al Jazeera.

“Although I had a job in Uganda, I could never look after my family and mother as well as I wished on my salary of $150 per month. Most professionals in my country are paid peanuts and this has forced many of them to look for greener pastures elsewhere. Going to Europe seemed to be the best way to achieve my goals.

During the day I worked as a freelance photojournalist for the New Vision and Bukedde newspapers in Uganda. In the evening, I worked in my own small shop in Kampala, the capital. Not many people in my country can earn that kind of money. I was able to meet people from all social classes, I was able to travel around the country, I had access to everything.

But I had it in my mind to go to Europe because many of my friends had emigrated. Some of them came back home with flashy cars and lots of money. The temptation to make it big and the fear that I was being left behind helped make up my mind.

In Uganda, I lived in a small village not far from Kampala. I was able to build my own small house and also had a small car that I used for work. My house was not so good compared to those of the rich people in the area, but it was okay for me. It had three rooms and no running water inside. I had electricity and a landline telephone. I was living there with my wife, daughter and a housemaid who helped us with the domestic work.”

In search of a better life

“A very good friend of mine went to London; he came back 10 years later with everything – cars, machines to make furniture and about $48,000.

I told him that I wanted to go to Europe, but he warned me not to. I thought perhaps he did not want me to develop.

I started to make arrangements. Initially I wanted to go to the UK, but they rejected my visa application. That made me think maybe it would be better to stay in my country. But I could not ignore the small voice within me telling me to go to Europe. I could hear it saying: “This is your time, use it, you’re not earning enough money here, if there are no opportunities in your country go elsewhere. Many people migrated and they have made it, you will make it.”

On the day of my departure, my family organised a farewell party and a small service to thank God for the visa and to ask for protection and guidance. We gathered at my mother’s house where nearly all my family and friends came to wish me luck and to ask me to bring gifts back with me. We roasted three chickens – everyone was excited.

When I hugged my mother for the last time her face was full of happiness. She told me: “Please don’t let us down and don’t forget us. Work hard so that we can also get some happiness. God will bless you and everything you do in Europe.”

I was looking forward to the challenges but as the plane took off, I started to think about where I was going. I asked myself: where am I going to sleep, who is going to receive me at the airport, what food am I going to eat, what job I am going to do? I tried to sleep but was too nervous and began to doubt my plan.

A European paradise

When I arrived in Amsterdam a man took me to the area where most immigrants live. He had arranged accommodation for me in the house of an African man. There were 15 people of different nationalities living there. I had to pay $162 a month to sleep in the corridor.

After three months I called my mother to ask for money because I was completely broke and had nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat. I went to Europe to help my family but now my family had to help me. My mother sent me $337, which I used to pay my rent for two months. I still had no money to buy food and, along with some friends, had to survive off other people’s leftovers. Sometimes church organisations gave us food.

Some of my friends were sleeping in semi-finished buildings, on the streets or on construction sites. One Zambian man spent more than a year sleeping on the streets. “I used to see beggars in my country and I could never think that one day I could be one of them in Europe,” he told me.

I will never forget the Nigerian lady who confessed that she was forced into prostitution. “I could sleep with more than five men a day just to get some money for rent, food and medication,” she said. She told me other women were in the same situation. She said they looked for jobs but wherever they went, they were asked for papers they did not have. Some contracted HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Getting together the money for rent and actually finding a room were two completely different things. Many people were afraid to accommodate us because we were illegal. Those that did let us rent rooms could impose unfair rules, like only allowing us to cook once a week.

Facing reality

My relatives back home started calling and telling me stories of hunger and poverty – demanding that I send money. They could not understand why, two years after arriving in Europe, I was still jobless. Sometimes I told them of the realities I had encountered but they did not believe me.

Many people in my situation were being paid cash for their work, but by doing so, became a target of exploitative bosses. Sometimes you could work for 12 hours and then the boss would say he had no money to pay you. We always had to fight for our money.

We could not openly complain because of the fear of losing our jobs. We lived in fear of the police, thinking we would be arrested and deported empty-handed.

When we got sick there was no money for treatment. It is very difficult for immigrants to acquire medication without papers. The Red Cross doctors can only provide you with paracetamol, no matter what the illness. They give you a letter referring you to a hospital but when you get there they ask for your insurance or ask you to pay lots of money. One Ugandan girl developed a tumour in her stomach, but when she was referred to a hospital, they told her that without medical insurance she had to pay more than $4,000 for an operation.

There were also some good people. I remember one retired Dutch doctor who used to help sick illegal immigrants. I went to see him and was amazed by the long cue of waiting immigrants.

The fear of failure

I missed my daughter and mother the most. I left my daughter in a boarding school when she was only five years old and I saw her again when she was 12. She could not remember me very well although she knew I was her father.

I felt depressed when I received calls from home announcing the death of a family member. Many people passed away during the time I was away.

I was not alone in this situation – many other immigrants were experiencing the same thing. Some had been away from their families for more than 10 years. One Ghanaian called Adrian said: “I have spent 10 years without seeing my family. I left my wife pregnant and I have never seen the child. I fear to go back empty-handed.”

The dilemma facing African immigrants in Europe is that they can barely find work. But returning home is no longer an option because they cannot pay back the money they borrowed for their trip. On top of this, the people who stayed at home want their share of the “riches” collected in Europe. They fear going home with nothing, because their family and friends will laugh at their failure and expel them from the community.

All of this makes immigrants vulnerable to exploitation, discrimination and humiliation. It is far from the “gold mountains” they dreamed of.

Many go from Africa to Europe as fortune hunters with high expectations but little information about the reality of life as an illegal immigrant.

Turning point

In October 2005, I read an article about the plight of 11 illegal immigrants who were killed when a fire broke out while they were awaiting deportation at a prison complex outside Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

I was shocked, particularly, because I thought such negligent situations could not happen in a developed country like the Netherlands. This was the turning point in my perception of Europe. I could never have imagined that a disaster of that scale would take place in such a wealthy, well-organised country.

It opened my eyes to the miserable situation I was in and I could see that I was trapped between my false expectations of Europe and the unrealistic expectations of my family.

Then I started the Surprising Europe project. I wanted to tell people the problems that Africans face – particularly those who migrate to Europe with the intention of working and becoming rich.

The project is not intended to discourage Africans from going to Europe, but rather to encourage them to weigh up their options before leaving their homelands.

There will be a new trial of the Schiphol Fire after the supreme court on the 14th of december nullified the verdict of September 3rd 2009. Ahmed Issa was deported to Libya right after the verdict of 18 months for starting the fire.
The supreme court thinks the evidence against Ahmed is too thin. The death of eleven undocumented migrants in the fire was the responisibility of the prison authority, but they never stood in court.
The new trial will be held in The Hague some time next year. And Ahmed Issa will come back on condition that ne is no longer considered un unwanted alien.
if the trail against Ahmed Issa should be done allover again or not.
On Friday 5th of November the Attorney-General, the representative of the Ministry of Justice published his advice to destroy the verdict of last year. He thinks there is not sufficient evidence that Ahmed started the fire on purpose. And he also thinks another expert witness has to be heard in court.
Normally the Supreme Court follows this advice.

In the last four years 77 More than a third (28) of the deaths reported by the IRR are people suspected or known to have taken their own lives after their asylum claims had been turned down. Seven are said to have died after being denied health care for “preventable medical problems”, seven are said to have died in prison custody, and 15 are said to have died during desperate and “highly risky” attempts to enter the country.

The World House staged a symposium on the situation of uncocumented migrants regading health, safety and housing. Here some impressions.

Ibrahim and others

Interview with Andree van Es (Dutch), in charge of diversity in Amsterdam.

Round-up (Dutch)

We watched the documentary Surprising Europe and had a discussion wit the makers.

We found a comment on the new xenophobic Dutch government by philosopher Slavoj Zizek in the Guardian. He sees a new fashion in Europe: Reasonble racism.

“We grant ourselves permission to applaud African and east European sportsmen, Asian doctors, Indian software programmers. We don’t want to kill anyone, we don’t want to organise any pogrom. But we also think that the best way to hinder the always unpredictable violent anti-immigrant defensive measures is to organise a reasonable anti-immigrant protection.”

Finally we tried to find an illegal person … check

Through out this year many of you expressed interest and support in many
ways. You have been in our meetings, fundraisings, actions and gatherings.
To date we succeeded in focusing our work in base building and trying to
expand to other cities. As a result we identified areas in which we cannot
work with our current limited resources. Therefore we are turning to our
allies and we are asking for your support. We are committed to unite all the
migrant domestic workers in the Netherlands to collectively fight for our
demands and WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Undocumented workers in the cleaning industry must be aware that the authorities will make surprise visits.
The “Arbeidsinspectie”, or labour inspection has announced intensive checks, especially in the province of North Holland.
They have received information about illegal emplyment, underpayment and fraud with social benefits.

The labour inspection can come without warning to work places and demand all sorts of documents from workers and employers.
If the inspection suspects fraud or believes that a person is illegal, they can hand her or him over to the police.

We advice undocumented workers to be alert, to move away when an inspection occurs and to make full use of their legal right to legal assistance when caught.

Thousands of cleaners working at Schiphol Airport, railway stations, hospitals and offices are on strike for better wages and respectable working conditions. The majority of cleaners are migrants. Cleaners are receiving minimal wages and are object of intimidation by the bosses. Companies like CSU, ASITO and HAGO are competing for contract with the railroads the airport and banks by exploiting their workforce.

The picket against striking breakers at Amsterdam Central Station

That is why the cleaners are not only striking but also targetting the contracting companies: they should be more to the cleaning companies, to stop the degrading wages and working conditions.

One tactic is to target undocumented workers. Some have been forces to work and were arrested by the Labour Inspection. Cleaning Company CSU has demanded all cleaners to present their papers. This is an act of intimidation and an attempt to create division among the cleaners. In response a goup of anarchist activists blocked the CSU office in Amsterdam urging workers to boycot the demand to show their papers.

Since the 23rd of February a nation-wide strike is gaining momentum:Â stations, public offices and Schiphol Airport are becoming dirty.

At Amsterdam CS the cleaning company CSU and NS are putting scabs to work. They have forced illegal migrants to work against their collegues. The union FNV responded by calling in the Labour Inspection. This insitute however is focussed on chasing undocumented migrants. Two cleaners from Ghana were caught and put in detention on the prison boat of Zaanstad.

The Cleaners Union explicitly caters for migrants, with and without papers. The undocumenetd cleaners had been warned, the orgniser told us. And he promised to support them after their arrest.

M2M calls for support of all cleaners, with or without papers.

You can do this by leaving your dirt on the train and the station as long as the strike holds.

Respect!

Ricky is in detention in Alphen aan den Rijn, to be deported to Nigeria.
He is an acknowledged survivor of the Schiphol Fire and has been denied residence because of his criminal record. He is considered un “unwanted alien”. This is the second time that Ricky is in prison without charges since the fire in 2005.
He suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He sleeps badly, has nightmares and is scared of fire. Treatment is not available in prison, nor in his homeground in Nigeria.
The prison psychologist prescribes watching TV.

The other day there was a fire alarm, Ricky panicked and was shouted at, forces to the gropund and then put in isolation for five days. He complained with the director and with the inspection, but was denied a hearing.
The Dutch government continues to deny its responsibility for the victims of the fire. They just want to get him out of the way.
The legal procedure is nearly ended. We provide some support through vists, phonecards and working with his lawyer and our doctor.
You can support Ricky by writing him

There are at least 186 secret detention centers maintained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) within the borders of the USA, according to an article published in the Nation magazine in December. Drawing on a report by Amnesty International (AI) entitled “Jailed without Justice,” it estimates that 415,000 people have been held at these facilities, which are operated under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security as so-called “sub-field offices” of the ICE. Their purpose is to deny undocumented immigrants due process and any means by which they can effectively lobby for their rights.

Under the headline “Deception helps illegal immigrants sneak into EU” Dutch newspaper NRC published an intersting article by Freek Schravensandeon it’s website. It gives you an idea of what you can expect if you try to pass the Dutch border.

The frontline: Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

Illegal immigrants and Dutch customs officials are caught in a game of cat and mouse.   Some of them might suddenly change queues, taking their chances with an official that looks more lenient. Others may come down the escalator as a group, only to split up as soon as they enter the customs officials’ line of sight. Sometimes a sloppily done necktie or a pair of white sneakers under a black suit will give them away. Sometimes the question “what is your passport number?” will. If they proceed to rattle it off, they have fallen for it, Erwin Rasterhoff, a customs official at Schiphol airport explained. “Nobody knows their passport number by heart.” It is a game of cat and mouse. Schiphol is the main battleground in the constant struggle between the Royal Marechaussee, the Dutch branch of the military responsible for protecting the nation’s borders, and the illegal immigrants, mostly Asian or African, trying to gain access to the European Union using fake passports. Last year, 600 would-be immigrants fell prey to the cat. How many mice got away is unknown. What is certain is: the rules of the game change constantly.

Customs officials practise what is known as profiling. They use tactical tricks. For instance, they try not to look only at the traveller standing at their counter, but eye the one behind him as well. They ask questions, like “What is your destination?” They scan passports, finger them, drop them. Fakes feel different, sound different when they land on the floor, and are rougher along the edges. Some illegal immigrants like to bluff. They have multiple fake stamps in their passports, to establish their assumed identity as a business traveller. When they fear exposure is inevitable, they often try to flirt with the customs official, or make a scene. “Why did you pick me out of the line? Because I’m black?” is an oft-used line, Rasterhoff said. If the veracity of a passport is questioned, it is submitted to the National Documents Bureau at the airport. Here, analysts look for pockets of air beneath the passport’s picture, indicative of photo swaps. The watermark is scanned under ultraviolet light, printing techniques and glue remnants are scrutinised and visa numbers studied. Since many countries still refuse to invest in secure passport technology, it is often impossible to determine whether a passport is genuine with 100 percent certainty.

Prize finds from the past line the bureau’s Wall of Fame. The wall displays 28 passports all bearing the same name (Cherif, a 43-year-old from Guinee) but different photographs. “A good forgery, technically speaking. Probably made with inside help,” said Gert Penterman, chief of the bureau. The 28 illegal immigrants carrying the passports arrived into the country over the course of six weeks, only to fall into the hands of the authorities. The wall is also donned with more fanciful documents. Passports of the nonexistent nation of British Honduras are a regular catch, Penterman said. A passport belonging to a German man who had proclaimed his own kingdom in Ghana, dubbed Lichtenberg, and made his own passport. “The Ghanaians had even stuck a visa sticker in his passport.” A large blue passport with golden letters reading “World Passport.” Stupid mistakes abound, like blatant spelling errors, or the birth dates of a woman’s two children: October 9 of 1988 and March 17 of 1989. There are services in China that will replicate any passport within a week, Rasterhoff said. But for many illegal immigrants, time is of the essence. This is why a lot of forgeries are not very convincing. Forging passports has also become more difficult thanks to technological advancements like the built-in chip or the digital photograph, which are now common in the most coveted of passports, those of EU countries.

This has led illegal immigrants to try their luck another way: through lookalike fraud. Criminals buy a real, stolen passport on markets in China or Pakistan and look for a prospective immigrant who looks like its previous owner. If need be they will outfit the new bearer with a moustache or glasses to match. Of the 600 suspected illegal immigrants apprehended last year, 134 were arrested because they bore insufficient likeness to the pictures in their passports. Catching lookalikes is difficult, Penterman explained. “White people are good at keeping other white people apart. But Chinese, Japanese and West Africans are more difficult for us. Besides, faces can change a lot over the years.” When examining a face, Penterman tries to focus on the extremities: the nose, with or without a stub, the space between the nose and the upper lip and the ears. “The ear is our best fingerprint,” Penterman said “It never changes”. If officials catch a suspected lookalike, they first take a picture that is then compared to the one in his or her passport with the naked eye – no technology exists that can do the job yet. If the traveller’s true identify remains uncertain, the suspect is questioned and frisked. If customs official still can’t make up their minds thereafter , they put the matter to a vote. “An independent one,” Penterman said. Often, cases remain undecided and are passed on to a judge.

The criminals orchestrating the identify fraud are rarely caught, Penterman said. “We deal with a lot of cases involving human trafficking, but if we catch someone they often claim not to know anything. ‘I found this passport at the station,’ is a story we hear a lot. When people say that, we know they are carrying out the instructions of a smuggler.” On rare occasions, one is apprehended. The officials once arrested a smuggler in Schiphol’s transit area, carrying multiple South Korean passports, a country for which no visa requirement exists to enter the Netherlands. The passports were destined for Chinese supposedly just passing through Schiphol on their way to another destination. After a quick swap in the airport’s toilets however, they would have been on their way out of the airport. Sometimes customs officials catch a group of illegal immigrants with consecutive ticket numbers, all carrying the same phone number with them. Or a passenger will linger in the transit area for a long time after a flight, a telltale sign that he may be the ringleader of people smuggling ring. On flights deemed high risk, passengers are checked immediately after arriving at the gate. Three men stand guard at the plane’s jet bridge while an undercover scours through the lounge, on the lookout for smugglers awaiting their human contraband there. Gateside inspections prevent illegal aliens from straying through the transit area for two weeks before finally applying for asylum. Once an immigrant is arrested, a jail cell awaits them. Any children he or she may have are temporarily placed in foster care. After a return flight has been arranged, the illegal immigrant is confined to Schipol’s deportation centre. Combs and razors are confiscated to prevent automutilation or worse. A lot of deportees do not return home quietly. None of them want to go back where they came from. Often, an entire village will has saved money to send one of its finest sons or daughters to Europe to make some money.
