So we do have this new standardization effort that apparently everybody was desperately waiting for – just read this REST-* thread.

I guess I am less concerned about the bad impact of this initiative than many others. We have seen these EAI-mindset gurus in the past and we already know the dead ends they took SOA to. The REST-* will have the same destiny so why to bother. Will it help JBoss to sell more? Maybe. Good for them and bad for their customers. But if I had to bet some money on this I would bet on the opposite – this bubble will burst before they create their first RestBoss datasheet.

At the same time, it has been clear for a while that REST needs best practices, maybe some policies, or maybe some contracts to become viable for enterprises. If everything is just left to open source communities then it is a matter of time when EAI vendors take the lead and create new Enterprise REST Buses implementing all the super important REST-* standards.

So I hope somebody sane will replace this initiative. Roy, Mark – there are non-EAI enterprise software vendors using REST heavily that can help. Like my ex-colleagues from HP Software

article I recalled my impressions from 2003(2)? when I had met with the Unlimited Scale (former name of Cassatt) team. My main doubts back then were about the pain – do the IT folks really feel enough pain to invest into the new architecture of super-scaling Linux servers?

Steve did an analogy with patients falsifying medical records and being untruthful. Lying. Lying into their pockets… This well may be good analogy. However, the other good analogy simply might be that these patients are not that sick – they just have some minor flu that does not justify spending on expensive treatment. And I am sure pharmaceutical companies would love convince them about necessity to take the pills and pay. In this scenario – it’s the pills vendors who are lying (into their pockets) or are simply wrong.

This is amazing surprise to someone like me who has spent entire career with distributed enterprise systems. The mainframe, this dinosaur, this centralized soon-to-be-dead computing platform is becoming the king of the distributed world. Of course in addition to being the king of the datacenter from the workload perspective. The arrival of technologies like z/Linux or Java to the mainframe world definitely caused a revolution and changed the game completely.

In the early nineties, when I was searching for something new and unique to do at school I had decided for CORBA. It was new, promising, interesting, cool. And this decision definitely determined many things that happened to me later – the postgraduate fun, Systinet web services adventure, and so on. My advice to college students? Consider mainframes – they became new again and will make you special! Check this press release

I had two presentations on SOA Symposium last week. One was on avoiding SOA pitfalls, such as EAI in angle brackets, lack of governance, ESB approaches, and similar. The other one was focused on various considerations you should think about when choosing between Atom (REST) and SOAP (WSA). I’ll post link to both decks as soon as they appear on the website. I was really happy meeting many people having similar opinions on the ESB emperor (as being naked…). Although it is fair to say this hasn’t been the prevailing opinion. We will see how the situation will look like on SOA Symposium 2009!

cloud from Werner. We have learned that most of the ‘location transparency’ promises and goals in distributed computing were actually harmful creating more pain than benefits. Transparency is nice idea but only until you hit the wall – whether you are a developer or operator or even customer.

Developers want tools to optimize application behavior. Operators need tools for cloud management and monitoring. They also need to do configuration, change, or financial management where the ‘cloud’ cannot be transparent. And finally, customers really should not care but only until problems occur (SLAs breaches etc.) – then they will want to look under the hood to understand what is going on.
