Scottish Cup Weekend Comes To A Close

With the final buzzer the books closed on a wonderful Scottish Cup weekend at the Centre for Sport & Exercise on the campus of the University of Edinburgh. There were great team performances and stand out players. Fantastic crowds and fun all around.

St Mirren Reid Kerr College walk away with an amazing four Scottish Cups. Their Cadette Women, Cadet Men and Junior Women all won RAF Scottish Cups, and their Senior Women brought a Sportserve Scottish Cup as well. City of Edinburgh had a great tournament also. Their Junior Men turned in one of their strongest peformances of the year to earn their RAF Scottish Cup and the Kings Senior Men put on show in the final game of the weekend to earn their second straight Sportserve Scottish Cup crown. The Banchory Stags and Midlothian Saints were victorious in the Chairman's Cups competitions, and even though they did not bring home a cup, the Clark Eriksson Fury fielded an impressive three teams in the field.

Win or lose we saw great effort and are proud of all the participants and grateful to all of the volunteers who made this weekend happen. We are also grateful to all the parents and partners who supported the players and coaches and officials who have worked so hard this season to reach this point. The game needs all of us, and we appreciate your service.

Kings Crowned Scottish Cup Champions For 2nd Straight Year

The big bodies of Scottish Basketball were giving everything they had in the hopes of earning the 2008 Scottish Cup Championship. Troon and City of Edinburgh went all out for 40 minutes, driving hard to the hoop and diving for loose balls all over the court before the Kings were eventually crowned Champions. The Championship is the second straight Senior Men’s title for Edinburgh, a team that boasts four Scotland National players Kevin Anderson, Garreth Lodge, Simon Flockhart and Laurie Costello.

Australian born Brett Jefferies continued to drive the Kings offensively, scoring nine points in the third quarter as Edinburgh extended their lead to as much as 17 points. Laurie Costello had the chance to keep the lead at 17 but, missed both his free throws with 1.1 left on the clock in the third.

The fourth quarter was not any better for the Tornadoes as they allowed the Kings to extend their lead to 19 points before calling time out with 7:49 left in the game. Jefferies was unstoppable, while teammate Campbell was hot, scoring 10 points in the second half, including two treys.

The final score was Edinburgh 79-60 over Troon.

Jefferies finished the game with 28 points for the Kings. Other top scorers were Kevin Anderson and Campbell with 17 and 15 each.

Troon was led offensively by Ifadade Thomas, who scored 12 points in a losing effort. Ross Campbell chipped in 10, while Ritchie Martin added nine.

Jefferies leads the way for Kings with 14 points at half-time

The final match of the 2008 Scottish Cup Championships featuring the City of Edinburgh Kings and Troon Tornadoes is underway, with the Kings leading by a score of 40-32 at half-time. Brett Jefferies leads all scorers with 14 points for the City of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh controlled the opening tip, putting the ball into Kevin Anderson hands for the first basket of the game. Troon stayed within three points thanks to Ashley Holm’s seven points in the first four minutes. Kings’ forward Simon Flockhart was awarded the opportunity to extend his team’s lead to six after a Euan Campbell technical foul. The lead was eventually extended to 15 points and remained the same for the final two minutes of the initial quarter.

Troon’s Ritchie Martin had his buzzer beating three pointer roll off the rim, closing the quarter behind the Kings by a score of 31-16.

Troon’s porous defence turned into a ball hounding, rebound grabbing, hit-the-floor plug. The extra effort paid off, holding the Kings to only nine points. The Tornadoes capitalized offensively scoring 16 points and climbing within eight points at the close of the half.

Holm’s points were a team high and all came in the first quarter.

St. Mirren Reid Kerr College win their fourth Scottish Cup of 2008; Chaloner scores 22

A 22 point performance by St. Mirren’s Natalie Chaloner earned her club the 2008 Scottish Cup Senior Women’s Championship. The win continued the Saints’ dominant 2008 Scottish Cup performance, securing their fourth title of the event.

Despite trailing after the first half, Polonia’s Leanne Page stuck to her guns, driving hard early in the second half, scoring three lay-ups as her team closed within 10 points of the Saints. The effort was not enough as the score stood at 49-35 in favour of St. Mirren at the end of the third quarter.

Chaloner owned the fourth quarter with a stat line of seven points, three steals, and two assists. The performance stretched St. Mirren’s lead to 59-39. Chaloner was helped in her effort by three pointers from Rebecca Cumming and solid offence by Rona Corkindale.

Polonia was unable to generate much offence, putting only 46 points on the board compared to the 79 from St. Mirren.

At the buzzer Chaloner finished with a stat line of 22 points, three steals and two assists. Other top scorers for St. Mirren were Corkindale and Cumming with 17 and 7 points respectively. Polonia was led on the score board by Page with 10 points. Amanda Johnston and Hazel Howson scored eight points each.

St. Mirren Kerr Reid Saints take early 33-24 lead at 2008 Scottish Cup Senior Women’s Final

Both the St. Mirren Kerr Reid Kerr Saints and Polonia Phoenix squads came out running and gunning, giving fans in attendance great quality basketball. Natalie Chaloner was flying down the court for St. Mirren, scoring two quick lay-ups to give her team an early 6-2 lead. Chaloner continued her dominance, scoring two more baskets and extending the Saints lead to 10-2 with just under four minutes left in the first quarter.

Polonia answered back and closed the lead to three at the end of the first quarter, trailing 13-10.

Nadele Strain coolly drained a three pointer to open the scoring for St. Mirren in the second quarter. From that point the teams traded baskets before Polonia went on a 6-2 run, closing the gap to one point, 23-22.

Polonia’s shot clock violation and subsequent turnovers allowed the Saints to stretch their lead to six, 9-22. The Saints tough defence and a Ramona Brown three-pointer from four feet beyond the arc sent Polonia to the dressing room down 33-24 and lots to think about.

Chaloner finished the first half with a game leading 13 points for the Saints. Amanda Johnston had six points for Polonia at the end of the first half.

Saints’ Amy White and Lee-Anne Mullholland march team to Chairman’s Cup Championship

Grangemouth came out strong in the third quarter, draining five quick points to close within two of the Saints. Midloathian answered back with an 8-0 run, eventually extending their lead to 35-24 at the end of the quarter.

The Saints controlled the clock, slowing down their half-court offense to find the open shooter. Defensively, Midloathian swarmed the Grangemouth Ladies with a tough 3-2 zone, holding the Ladies to just seven points in the third.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter were a defensive show until Grangemouth’s Ruth Provan hit a three from downtown. Midlothian held strong and took a 12 point lead, 42-30 into the final 2:27 of the game.

Grangemouth’s Nicola Graham drained five of her seven points with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Ladies teammate Provan sank a three to bring her team within six points, 44-38. Unfortunately for Grangemouth, that was the closest they would get, falling six points shy of the 2008 Chairman’s Cup Championship.

Midloathian lead by five at half-time of Women’s Chairman Cup

The 2008 Women’s Chairman Cup between the Midlothian Saints and the Grangemouth Ladies opened the door to what will certainly be an exciting second day of the 2008 Scottish Cup Finals at the University of Edinburgh Centre for Sport & Exercise. Grangemouth opened the game with a 5-2 lead but, were unable to take a large lead thanks in part to poor shooting and ball handling. The Saints kept the game close, trailing by two, 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Lee-Anne Mullholland took control early in the second quarter, driving the Saints with three quick baskets from inside and drew a foul, taking an 18-13 lead in the process. Grangemouth answered back thanks to a three pointer from Ruth Provan and two points from Pauline Dundas.

Both teams struggled from the field in the final two minutes of the half, unable to make a basket. The Saints led 24-17 at the end of the half.

Mullholland led all scorers with nine points for Midlothian. Dundas led the Grangemouth Ladies with seven points.

Stags Hold Off Bears For Chairman's Cup Victory

They had the momentum going into the second half and they kept it. The Banchory Stags used that energy and some strong play to build on their four point half-time lead and finish with a 51-40 win. The Stags eased their lead to seven on a graceful baseline layup by Russell Tattersall. with 3:50 to go in the third quarter. They strathed it to nine after a powerful inside move by Stuart Gray.

Highland were able to hold the lead there, but were not able to get any closer. The final basket was dropped in by Neil Dolton to cement the Stags victory and give them some silverware to keep them company on the trip home.

Northern Foes Fight For Chairman's Cup Crown

It's cold in the north of Scotland and the two teams from the north had a touch of frost on their shooting to start the first half of the Chairman's Cup Final. It took a while to get their sites set with poor shooting from the perimeter marking the first few minutes. Banchory was the first to warm up and got out to an 11-4 lead after 8 minutes.

Highland soon thawed as well. Two outstanding fast breaks by #7 Dean Kane highlighted an 8-0 run by the Bears that saw them take the lead at the 9:20 mark in the second quarter. Banchory were not down long though. A deep three from Russell Tattersall brought the Stags even at 16-16. The teams traded baskets before Banchory pulled back in front and went into the half-time with a 23-19 lead.

City of Edinburgh Kings Junior Men win the 2008 Scottish Cup 66-46; Stirrat leads the way with 17 points

The City of Edinburgh Kings Junior Men’s team was crowned Scottish Cup Champions after defeating the Cark Eriksson Fury by a score of 66-46. The Kings were led by Vincent Stirrat’s 17 points, including a nice two-handed dunk in the first half. Lee Reilly chipped in 16 points for the winners. The leading scorers of the Fury were Mark Hargreaves and Chris Chok with 15.

As the bleachers swelled with supportive fans, both teams started slow before the Kings took charge of the court. Calum Nicol drained a three and a long two to give the Kings an early 5-2 lead. The Kings held strong on defence and further extended their lead to seven points at 9-2. The Fury were unable to close the gap thanks to a two for six performance from the charity stripe.

Edinburgh took the ball to the hoop, scoring six quick points and taking a 17-7 lead to open the second quarter. The Fury answered back with four of their own before calling timeout with eight minutes left in the half.

Centre Ali MacKay drew two consecutive fouls in the paint, and hit all of his free throws, followed by Stirrat’s dunk as the Kings took a 35-22 lead to the dressing room.

The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets until, Edinburgh’s Chris Collins came alive, leading the Kings on a 10-0 run and extending their lead to 54-28. The Fury trailed 58-33 to begin the fourth quarter. MacKay got his first rest with 7:33 left in the game and the Kings lead by a score of 60-38. Stirret was unable to register a basket for the rest of the game due to furious defense from Clark Eriksson.

The City of Edinburgh Kings take 35-22 lead into half at 2008 Scottish Cup

Junior Men’s final is underway at the RAF Scottish Cup featuring the City of Edinburgh Kings and the Clark Eriksson Fury. Kings forward Vincent Stirrat is leading all scorers with 12 points including a crowd pleasing two-handed dunk after making a steal. The near capacity crowd played the role of sixth man, cheering on every possession.

Calum Nicol drained a three and a long two to give the Kings an early 5-2 lead. The Kings held strong on defence and further extended their lead to seven points at 9-2. The Fury were unable to close the gap thanks to a two for six performance from the charity stripe.

Saints Go Marching On With Third RAF Scottish Cup After Junior Women Win 68-51

St Mirren Reid Kerr College had Clark Eriksson Fury's number today. Twice. The Saints Junior Women joined the Cadet Men having edged the Fury for the Scottish Cup. The Saints came into the second half with a 10 point lead. The Fury made several valiant runs, but could not get over the hump. At 5:00 in the fourth the Saints opened their lead to 16 with the score at 60-44 and never looked back. The Fury fought hard but could not find the answer. The Saints finished ahead by 17, 68-51, and claimed their second win over the Fury and third RAF Scottish Cup of the day.

The Saints were led by a powerful trio. Rebecca Cummings had 23, Michelle Bisset added 20, and Caroline Finlay chipped in another 14.

The Fury were led by captain Mairi Buchan who poured in 29 of their 51 points.

Junior Women Final

St Mirren Reid Kerr College Saints and the Clark Eriksson Fury did not have long to resume the rivalry started with their Cadet Men clash earlier in the day. Immediately following that battle, the clubs' junior women squads stepped onto the court to face each other for the RAF Scottish Cup. The game started with good exchanges from both squads before St Mirren's pressure started to take its toll. The Saints used the press to generate several easy baskets. While the momentum was with St Mirren, they never really could get a foot hold and the Fury hung tough. They entered the half with St Mirren ahead 24-34.

St Mirren Cadet Men Claim Second Title For The Saints

The second half of the Cadet Men's final was much more stable, but just as intense as the first. Neither team was able to gain much ground. St Mirren held a 3-4 point lead for much of the third quarter. The Fury pulled even at 50-50 with 2:04 remaining in the quarter, but St Mirren pulled back to lead by four.

The fourth quarter continued the back and forth, but things tightened down the stretch with the Fury pulling ahead by 1, 60-59, on a pair of free throws by Alisdair Fraser at 5:04 remaining in the fourth. The Fury had several chances to steal the lead back but could not capitalise. However, the Fury could not pull away either.

Number 10 Kyle Haldane, finally put St Mirren back in front 61-60 with 4:00 remaining. Team captain Kevin McDonald added 1 more the St. Mirren lead from the free throw line, and Calum Bryson added two more putting the score at 64-60. Brian Munnoch cut the lead to 1 with a layup with 1:35 remaining, but St Mirren quickly answered.

The final minute was bedlam. The Fury had two chances to take the lead with 30 seconds but shots from Jonny Bunyan and Brian Munnoch would not fall. Tom Stuttard sealed a victory for St Mirren with a jump shot from the top of the key as the shot clock wound down and a steal on the following possession. Jonny Bunyan was forced to foul and the rest is history. The Saints claimed their second title of the day 70-66.

Tom Stuttard and Kyle Haldane were a two man wrecking crew putting up 29 and 18 points respectively for St Mirren. Jonny Bunyan paced the Fury with 18 points. Alisdair Fraser chipped in 15 and Cameron Buchan added 10.

Cadet Men Final

The Clark Eriksson Fury lived up to their name opening the 2008 RAF Scottish Cup Cadet Men Final with an 11-2 run fuelled by two 3 pointers by team captain Jonny Bunyan. St Mirren withstood the storm and launched a run of their own outscoring the Fury 8-0 in the next 1:16 to bring the score to 11-10 at the 4:49 mark in the first quarter.

Towards the end of the first quarter, the Fury recovered and ran out to a 10 point lead at 26-16 capped by another 3pt basket from Jonny Bunyan. The lead would not last, however, as the Saints responded with a combination of tough defense and quick offense. Their effort culminated in a 40-37 half-time lead.

St Mirren Reid Kerr College Claim Cadette Women's Title

The second half of the Cadette Women's final saw the JRW Gladiators answer St Mirren's 8-0 run to end the first half half with a 6-0 run of their own. This brought the score back to 35-33. The Saints finally stemmed the bleeding with their first basket coming 4 minutes into the half, and a 3pt basket from the left corner at 5 minutes left opened the lead back up to 7.

Action was back and forth, but the Gladiators pulled back with a basket by Diane Currie with 11 seconds left in the third quarter to pull to within two at 45-43. St Mirren's pressure finally started to wear on the Gladiators and the Saints pulled to a 57-45 lead with 2:39 remaining. A late three by Gladiators captain Erin McGarrachan cut the lead to 9, but that was as close as they would come. The Saints went on to claim the Cadette Women's Scottish Cup 63-52.

Captain, Emma Black, led the charge for the Saints bringing in 16 points. Lauren McKinlay chipped in 10.

The Gladiators top scorers were Erin McGarrachan with 21 and Melissa Bell with 8.

Cadette Women's Final

St. Mirren Saints scored the opening basket of the RAF Scottish National Cup Finals 2008. Their opponents, the JRW Gladiators, answered back and the game was underway. The Gladiators took their first lead of the game with 2:54 left in the first quarter but, it was short lived. Saints captain Gemma Black sank a three-pointer to increase her team’s lead. A number of fast break opportunities presented themselves for the Gladiators who cut the Saints lead to one, 15-14.

The second quarter opened with both teams running hard. The Saints pulled away twice, 22-18 and 27-24. Great ball movement and speed by the Gladiators kept the game close and even tied the game at 27-27. St. Mirren picked up their level of play and went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter with 35-27 lead.

RAF Scottish Cup Finals Tip Off!

The wait is over! The RAF Scottish Cup Finals are officially underway as St Mirren Reid Kerr College and St Maurices JRW Gladiators tipped off at 10:00 this morning. We will have updates with photos and scores from all the games throughout the day.

You can get to the finals in person by heading to the Centre for Sport & Exercise on the campus of the University of Edinburgh. You've got to love this game!

Have You Got The Golden Touch?

Just say it and it sounds good. Well it doesn't have to just sound good. Get yourself to the Cup Finals and you could have a shot to win it and spend it! Here are the details:

In order to be eligible you need to be at least 18 years old and NOT have played in the BBL or for a university in the United States.
You need to fill out a slip at the ticket table located at the spectator's entrance.
We will draw 4 competitors at the half-time of the Chairman's Cup Men's Final on Saturday to compete. From that group 1 will advance.
We will draw 4 new competitors at the half-time of the Senior Women's Final on Sunday. From that group 1 will advance.
The two finalists will be invited to return to compete one last time during half-time of the Senior Men's Final. The winner will be given the chance to shoot for £10,000.

If you miss, we won't let you leave empty handed. Additional prizes include:

a brand new leather basketball.
a professionally designed hardback book with all the action photos from the 2008 RAF Cup Finals.
a box set of professionally produced DVDs from all the games at the RAF Cup Finals as well as copies of Heart of the Game, Hoosiers, and Coach Carter (some of the best basketball movies ever made!)

Free Week At Summer Camp Competition Details

The early bird gets the worm! In this case, the early bird gets the chance to win a free week at the RAF National Player Development Camps this summer (a £220 value). In order to qualify for the competition, you need to attend the Cadette Women's Final at 10:00am on Saturday.

If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, all you need to do is fill out a slip with you name and e-mail address.

Getting Into The Game: Parking and Entrances

Excitement for this weekend is building and we want you to know where to go! Your first concern may be parking. There is an NCP Car Park located just a stones throw from the spectators entrance. We have marked that on the official Google Map. On street parking restrictions are lifted on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) so main street parking may be available. Please check area signs to be certain. Please park responsibly and be considerate of local residents.

Spectators Entrance

Spectators will enter through the doors located towards that back of the Pleasance. This entry can be found by going through the arch to the left of the small car park just off the front of the Pleasance. This is also marked on the Google Map.

Officials and Team Entrance

Officials and team members will enter through the front door to the Centre for Sport & Exercise. This is located through the small car park located just off the front of the Pleasance. This is marked on the Google Map.

We are expecting great crowds this weekend so please take a moment and plan your route so that you can make it safely and easily into the games!
