The Des Moines Register, RAGBRAI and the family of the late Don Benson are pleased to announce that RAGBRAI XXXIX will be dedicated to Benson’s memory.

In RAGBRAI circles, Benson is well remembered as the long-time logistics man behind the annual bicycle tour. He passed away in May of 2011. In the Boone area, Benson was well known as a long time rail fan. In fact, for several years he served on the Iowa Railroad Historical Society Foundation Board of Directors, which operates the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.

Combining Benson’s passions of railroading and RAGBRAI, a dedication of the 2011 Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa will held at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad Museum on Tuesday, July 26. Starting at 5pm, great memories of Don will be shared in front of the Kate Shelley car. Railroad fans, riders and residents are all invited to join in honoring Don Benson.

The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad is located at 10^th and Division streets in Boone, which happens to be right along the route on which the RAGBRAI riders will enter town.

Non-profit/school groups may apply for a share of potential profits

Boone, IA – Non-profit/school groups may apply for a share of potential profits

In the event that hosting RAGBRAI overnight in the city of Boone generates a profit after all expenses are paid, the Boone RAGBRAI Advisory Board has designated several local groups to receive a percentage of the money. Twenty percent of any monies received over and above expenses is to be divided between Boone non-profit, school or 501c(3) groups. The official application for consideration is posted on the web at www.boonegov.com/RAGBRAI

Applications are due on Friday, June 30, nearly a month before the bicyclists arrive in town. Recipients and amounts of final awards will be selected by the Boone RAGBRAI Advisory Board.

RAGBRAI will overnight in Boone on Tuesday, July 26. Estimates are that upwards of15000 riders, support people and bicycle fans will become Boone residents for that one night! With over 800 volunteers working to make this a fun and profitable experience for all concerned, hopes are high that there will be money to distribute after all monetary obligations are met!!

The "Case of the Blues" presents the original music of Brad 'bebad' McCloud, longtime poet of the Hardroad and winner of the 2008 Iowa solo/duo Blues Challenge. He started writing, playing, and singing years ago and has grown into a bluesman with something to say. He's gathered a band of seasoned musicians around him mixing a host of influences and flavors into a steaming stew of original blues music.

It’s happening at “Chug Central”

In addition to a great line up of live entertainment, those joining in the festivities of Boone’s July 26 RAGBRAI event will have an downtown outdoor beverage garden from noon to midnight! In keeping with the overall Boone theme of “Chuggin’ Into Boone”, the beverage garden has been dubbed “Chug Central.” It will be located in the parking lot west of the Chamber office to

Tickets good for one alcoholic beverage or an energy drink can be purchased inside of the garden for $3 each, or a value pack of 6 tickets for $15. Anheuser products of Bud, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Landshark, Stella and Monster Energy will be served throughout Chug Central.

The entertainment committee plans activities throughout the day. A large tent will be provided for shade, along with picnic tables for meeting up with old friends and making new ones as over 15000 RAGBRAI riders come “Chuggin’ Into Boone”.

Boone, IA – VOLUNTEERS PLEASE!

The volunteer coordinators of the Boone RAGBRAI event need your help!!! The mission of the RAGBRAI committee is to work together to provide an entertaining overnight stay to the 15,000 plus folks that will be coming to Boone on Tuesday, July 26. But to do that, we need to have all hands on deck!

Approximately 200 folks have already registered to help, and the committee says “thank you!” for that. But many hands will make light work, and we could sure use your talents. Over 800 people are needed to place and remove signs, sell T-shirts, greet riders, hand out maps, answer questions about our activities and services, help vendors find their assigned spots, sell tickets, serve beverages, check ID's, help riders find their camping area and a whole bunch more!

RAGBRAI is coming to Boone on July 26^th and leaving on July 27^th. We want you to be ready for this great event. We also want you to know what to expect on Wednesday morning as the 20,000 plus riders and support crew leave the Boone area and head for the next overnight town.

You will see cyclists forever. You will have a hard time crossing the road. Please try to keep the right side of the road and shoulders clear of debris. Cyclists are a fun group of people, but we want them to respect your property.

Should you invite any cyclists on your property, please be aware of the facts:

· You are liable if anyone gets hurt.

· Keep all water stand, etc, on the right side of the road for safety. The road will not be closed that day and you do not want cyclists to have to cross oncoming traffic to get to you.

· Cyclists will not stop at the bottom of a hill for refreshments. Do not set up stands at the bottom of a hill. People will NOT stop.

· Young cyclists who want to follow along only make the road more dangerous. Please keep children away from the road and pathway of RAGBRAI.

· For the safety of your pets and the riders, pen all your animals and keep pets penned or leashed.

· Don’t spray riders with water unless you ask them – many don’t want water on their supplies they carry on their bikes.

Boone, IA – RAGBRAI route through the City of Boone announced.

Boone Police Chief Bill Skare announced the route RAGBRAI will take through Boone on Tuesday, July 26.

Bicyclists will enter Boone County on Hwy E18, or

130^th Street

, and then turn south on

Nature Road

(Hwy R21), which turns into

Division Street

as it reaches the Boone city limits. At

10^th Street

, the riders will turn east and travel to

Story Street

. They will continue south on

Story Street

, through the downtown area, and then turn west onto

Mamie Eisenhower Ave.

With a south turn onto

Greene Street

, an expected 15000 bicycles will proceed through Herman Park, cross Park Avenue and arrive at the main camping area of McHose Park. Additional camp sites at DMACC and the Boone Middle School will siphon away some of the riders at Park Avenue. Shuttles will be available to riders to return them to the main entertainment area located north of

9^th Street

in downtown Boone.

As RAGBRAI participants leave town on Wednesday, July 27, the majority of them will exit the north entrance of McHose Park by traveling east on Park Avenue to

South Marshall Street

. With a turn to the north, they will continue on to

1^st Street

, just north of the Boone County Hospital, and turn east. This route will take them outer edge of the Boone city limits, where they will turn south onto Corporal Snedden Drive, which becomes Quill Ave as they cross Hwy 30. With a turn to the west onto Hwy E57, RAGBRAI riders will continue out of Boone County toward Kelley.

With the potential doubling of Boone’s population on these days, officials strongly urge Boone residents to be aware of changes in typical traffic patterns and heighten alertness as they travel during RAGBRAI.

WHAT A RIDER EXPECTS:

A place to put their tent or a bed inside, Or inside floor space for a sleeping bag.
Access, if possible, to bathroom and shower.
Possibly somewhere to fill water bottle.

WHAT A RIDER DOES NOT EXPECT:

To have full use of your home.
To be fed and entertained.
Towels, soap or shampoo.

WHAT HOSTS CAN EXPECT:

Well-behaved, appreciative guests.
Guests who respect your wishes.
The riders to arrive mid to early afternoon and be out again usually by 9:00 a.m.
Someone who will remember your kindness.

RIDER HOSTS NEED AN INSURANCE WAIVER

You may receive calls asking about housing from people coming to town during RABGRAI. Please direct them to the Boone RAGBRAI Housing Committee in order to add them to the housing request list. By going through the formal process, we can ensure that all guests are registered participants of RAGBRAI. If a rider is unregistered, they have not signed the RAGBRAI Waiver and Release of Liability. Therefore, anyone in the community who houses unregistered riders opens themselves to full liability for whatever may happen when that rider is at their home.

Please notify the RAGBRAI Housing Chair if you have already accepted riders to be guest in your home. If you have agreed to accept a rider who has not registered and signed a waiver of liability, you could be personally accepting the risk, in some cases of having strangers in your home.

BOONE RAGBRAI COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES LOGO, SLOGAN AND MISSION STATEMENT

Boone, IA – March 22, 2011 –

Since the announcement of Boone as an overnight host town for RAGBRAI 2011, a team of folks have been working to bring this event together. With nineteen major reporting committees, a host of sub-committees, an advisory board and a swarm of over 800 expected volunteers, Boone is confident they can host an entertaining overnight stay to an anticipated 15 to 20000 bikers, support staff and visitors on Tuesday, July 26.

In a General Committee meeting on Tuesday, March 22, Overall Chairman Mayor John Slight announced the chosen logo for the Boone stay. The logo features a contemporary bike rider incorporated into a locomotive, honoring Boone’s railroad history. The theme of Boone’s RAGBRAI for 2011 is “Chuggin’ Into Boone 2011”. (logo attached)

The Boone committee will use the following mission statement as their guide for the event:

Boone will work as a community to provide an entertaining overnight stay to 2011 RAGBRAI participants, fans and friends. We will have a safe, welcoming environment that meets the needs of our guests while promoting local businesses and showcasing community assets. The RAGBRAI event will be financially self sustaining.
