With their long coat, distinctive markings and bright blue eyes it is no wonder that they are one of the most sought after pedigree cats. Despite their name, there is nothing raggedly or inelegant about this breed at all. In fact, their name comes from the fact that the breed has a tendency to go limp and remain completely relaxed when picked up.

The history of the first Ragdoll cats is somewhat bizarre. They were bred by a breeder named Ann Baker, in California in the 1960's who believed that her cat had been altered genetically while hospitalized after a car accident. After coming home from treatment, she claimed that the long haired white cat, named Josephine, now went limp when being lifted. While this could have been a side effect of the accident, her next litter of kittens all displayed the same trait, causing Baker to believe that Josephine's genes had been altered. She set about breeding Josephine with males that showed distinctive and attractive markings, and the Ragdoll breed was developed.

Although recognizable by their distinctive markings when fully grown, Ragdoll kittens are born completely white and it can take up to three years for them to reach maturity and their coats to fully develop markings. For this reason if you are buying a Ragdoll kitten it is extremely important to double check all paperwork that can verify the kitten's pedigree, especially if you are planning to show the cat.

A Ragdoll cat's hair is extremely soft and downy, and is often said to be more like a rabbit's than a cat's. Unlike many other breeds, Ragdolls are not prone to excessive shedding, and indeed may shed less than short haired cats. Another feature of this remarkable breed is that their coat does not require as much brushing or grooming as other long haired breeds. Running a long toothed comb or brush through your Ragdoll cat's coat once a week is usually sufficient to remove dead hair and smooth out any tangle. Do, however pay particular attention to your cat's armpit area, as this is one place where matting can occur.

Ragdoll cats are typically white with some coloured shading towards the extremities such as the ears, tail and paws. These markings are similar to those of a Siamese. There are three general types of markings found within the Ragdoll breed: pointed, bicolour and mitted. All of these colourings are acceptable at shows, as long as they fit within the requirements for each pattern of markings. Pointed Ragdoll cats have colourings that closely resemble a Siamese, with their whole coat being a single colour and darkening out towards the tips of the ears and tail. Bicolour Ragdoll cats have the same shading, but with a distinctive inverted V of white on their face, and with a white chest, stomach and legs. Mitted Ragdolls have colouration similar to pointed, but must have a white chest and stomach, as well as white paws, or "socks".

Another trait that the Ragdoll shares with a Siamese cat is light eyes. Although the most desirable colour is blue, it is not uncommon for Ragdoll cats to have light green eyes.

When it comes to size, Ragdolls are one of the largest breeds of cats. Fully grown male cats can weigh up to ten kilograms (1.5 stone, or 20 lbs) with female cats being slightly lighter. They are sturdy cats with strong bones, however their kind, open features and shaggy coat soften their overall appearance.

As well as needing little grooming and being easy to handle, another feature which makes these beautiful cats a great family pet is their temperament. Ragdoll cats are gentle giants, and tend to be easy-going, placid, calm and quiet cats. They are also highly affectionate and enjoy spending time with
They have long, thick fur coats and markings that resemble a siamese. Caring for your ragdoll cat should involve a regular feeding and grooming schedule, along with regular visits to the veterinarian for checkups and vaccinations. If you take good care of your ragdoll cat, they will be healthy, happy, and a better active pet for you to enjoy.

Feeding
Fresh food and water is an absolute necessity for your ragdoll. It is recommended that you always have a bowl full of dry food available for your cat, as well as a bowl of clean water. Wet food is probably not necessary on a daily basis, but it is really up to you, and what your ragdoll prefers. You may need to experiment with different brands and flavors of wet food. It can provide extra nutrients and add variety to your ragdoll's diet. We recommend feeding your ragdoll one of the premium brands of food, as the quality is usually better. Usually kittens should have a special formula of food, so check with your veterinarian or local pet store if your not sure.

You should try to clean the water bowl daily, and the food bowl as much as possible to prevent germs and bacteria from building up.

Grooming
Ragdoll coats can vary in thickness and hair type. The average ragdoll hair is fairly thick, and very soft to the touch. The length of the fur can be medium to long.

They usually do a good job of grooming themselves, and don't require excessive brushing. It is a good idea to brush them strenuously a couple of times a week to prevent matting of the fur. The other reason for brushing on a regular schedule, is if you happen to find a knot forming, you can easily brush it out before it gets out of control.

Ragdolls tend to enjoy grooming and make it easy for you to brush away!

Bathing
Bathing is not really necessary if regular grooming is done. It may be beneficial to give your ragdoll a bath a couple of times a year, to clean the coat if really dirty or if they have gotten into something that can not be brushed out.

Make sure that you use a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated especially for cats, as regular human products may be harmful to your ragdoll.

Claws
Declawing a cat is a controversial subject, and one that brings many different opinions. We generally don't recommend declawing a ragdoll unless it will help with the safety within a household, specifically with children. Clipping the claws can be done on a regular basis to avoid damage to your furniture or other items in the house, so if that is your only reason for declawing the cat, your decision should be weighed carefully because it is not reversible.

Keep in mind that if a ragdoll cat is declawed, it should be limited in it's exposure to the outside world. Without front claws, a ragdoll doesn't have much of a defense against other animals or threats that it might encounter.

Litterbox
The litterbox should be kept in a fairly secluded area to allow for privacy, but not so out of the way that it is difficult to access for cleaning. Usually a laundry room or other spare room serves as a good location.
We recommend scooping out the inside of the box at least once a day, and actually replacing the litter weekly. If you have more than one cat, then it may be necessary to clean the box twice daily, morning and night for example.

There are many different brands and types of litter out there, it is just a matter of preference. The main thing is to find something that your cat will use, is easy to keep clean and affordable for your budget.

Veterinarian
You should take your ragdoll to a veterinarian on a regular basis according to what they recommend. You will want to get vaccination shots and any other treatments that will keep your cat healthy and safe.

There may be special considerations if your ragdoll spends more time outside, such as pest control and a higher susceptibility to disease. Make sure you discuss this with your vet and work out a plan that makes sense.
The beautiful cat dates its origin back to the nineteen sixties when it was first developed in California, United States. Since then it has undergone a few changes but it still remains one of the best varieties among domestic cats as far as temperament and looks are concerned. A relatively big cat, the average Ragdoll weighs in the range of ten to twenty pounds, with males being larger than average females.

With its deep chested muscular physique the Ragdoll is an impressive physical specimen amongst house cats. Its long silky coat comes in four patterns, namely mitted, van, bicolor and colorpoint. Established fur colors are six. These include blue, chocolate, cream, lilac, red and seal. Points exist on face, ears, tail and legs like the Siamese, in various patterns including lynx, tortie and solid. Ragdolls are slow in development and do not reach their full size with a well developed coat until three to four years of age. When fully grown they have a curved profile with large hindquarters. They have big beautiful blue eyes and a very sweet facial expression.

Ragdolls are the most laid back of all cats. They almost never get into fights and don't known how to defend themselves. Therefore they must never be left outdoors. It is often reported that they go limp when picked up though this may not be true in all cases.

Owing to their loving and sweet nature, Ragdolls make excellent pets for a household. They are playful though they keep their claws sheathed during play. They are gentle and affectionate animals and are also considered often to be the most loving of all cats. They follow their humans around everywhere, displaying a tender attitude towards them. The single layered coat doesn't shed or tangle easily and therefore does not require as through grooming as that of the Persian.

Cats are also one of the most intelligent and wise pets as well as relatively easy to care for and can be trained if you know how to do it correctly. We commonly teach our cats its name. We also call them through their given names as well. It's full of fun and exciting ideas teaching our pet like our own growing child.

Having a cat in our homes also mean providing them safety and feeding needed for their healthy body so that they will not go around the street and will go to some garbage and find for their own food. Cats become naughty if they are lack of attention as well as adequate food to eat. Animal experts is also considering that proper training is almost effective if our pets are not hungry and have proper environment with enough space to roam around.

Our cats naturally chew and play our things at home. Providing your pet cat with an assortment of interesting cat toys means our pet is far less likely to chew up your slippers or cushions instead. Training our pets is somewhat an obligation also as a pet owner and our responsibility to them is much important so that they will not also result to harm our own things at home.

In training our pets it is a bad idea to hit them if we are bored of them. By hitting them you will only cause them to get afraid of you and does not understand the relationship of being hit with behaving in an inappropriate way. A firm voice of saying "NO" or by clapping you hand s will let your pet understand the spoken meaning of it. Spraying your pet cat faced is also acceptable action if your pet does wrong. Treat your pet cat naturally as you do to train your own little baby boy walking step by step.

However, if your kitty does something good and great, it is always a good idea to reward it with a cat treat or a few minutes of playtime between you both. It will then associate its good behavior with receiving a treat or some kind of bonus that you would like to give.

Pet cats are naturally nocturnal but they can be trained to sleep at night. A cat pouncing on you at five in the morning expecting food can be inconvenient. If you get up and feed your pet cat, you are encouraging this behavior. Having a set feeding time for them and sticking to it will let the cat know it is pointless to wake you in the middle of the night because it is not going to get fed.

Good cat training is mostly about using common sense and making sure your pet cat has everything it needs for a happy life. Proper training and a lot of love as well as care will ultimately make sure the two of you have a happy relationship and a lot of fun together.
The breed was developed during the middle of the 20th century by a cat breeder in the US. He bred a cat that when people held it, it would lay limp like a Raggedy Ann doll. The breed was a cross between a Birman cat and another type of longhair cat from an unknown ancestry. The Ragdoll had a calm, relaxed demeanor, and although the Cat Fancier's Association did not initially acknowledge the Ragdoll, their progeny became the gentle Ragdolls we know today.

This breed is one of the largest of the cat breeds, weighing between ten and twenty pounds. It is no surprise that such heavy cats have big, muscular bodies. Their heads are slightly round, their ears are small and rounded, and a Ragdoll cat's large eyes are bright blue in color. This breed's tail is somewhat bushy and tapers at the end. The Ragdoll does not come in a wide range of colors and patterns. Truly, there are actually only 4 colors accepted by the Cat Fancier's Association, Seal, Chocolate, Blue, and Lilac. You can find these colors in pointed, mitted, or bicolor patterns, but some breeders avoid mitted cats because they look a lot like to the breed's Birman ancestors.

The Ragdoll's calm behavior makes it the perfect choice for families. These cats are almost dog-like in their behavior, greeting relatives at the door, following them through the house, and snuggling down beside them on the family couch. If you do not believe in de-clawing your cat, but are concerned about having your furniture shredded, you may want to consider this breed additionally. Some Ragdoll breeders say their cats have learned to use a scratching post instead of furniture arms to sharpen their claws much sooner than their other cat breeds. Because these cats seem to make an effort to keep from scratching people, as well, they may be less likely to scratch furniture in the first place.

While this cat breed does not need the company of other pets and seems to prefer to spend time with family members over cats, it does not mind dwelling with other animals. Perhaps it is because this breed is so much larger than other cats, but it is more likely because the Ragdoll is just so mellow.

Since the Ragdoll is a longhair animal, some prospective cat owners are a little bit hesitant about choosing this breed. They fear they won't have time for the frequent grooming most longhairs have to have. However, this breed's silky coat texture makes it a very low care cat. Combing through your cat's hair weekly to remove stray hairs or debris is all that is necessary to keep his coat looking fantastic. One thing you may want to keep in mind is that although most longhairs are prone to hairballs, Ragdoll cats rarely develop them.

If you want a sweet-tempered, family oriented pet, then the big Ragdoll may be the ideal breed for you.

A large cat, the Ragamuffin weighs in the range of ten to twenty pounds, with males typically being heavier than females. It is a somewhat rare and expensive breed at the moment. This is largely owing to its relatively recent recognition and development, not to mention the sublime beauty and appeal of this felid. Like the Ragdoll, Ragamuffin is one of the most sought after domestic cats.

Like other large cats, Ragamuffins take time to develop, reaching full size by around four years of age. Thy have a rectangular profile with strong chest and shoulders. Heavily boned and well muscled, they often have a fatty pad on abdomen though they are not obese. Fur is long and silky with a prominent neck ruff and plush tapering tail. A broad variety of coat colors and patterns exists. Eyes are large and expressive. There is a nose dip and whisker pad is puffy, adding to the cat's sweet facial expression.

Despite similarities, certain differences do exist between Ragamuffins and Ragdolls. The former have a rounder skull with a slightly fuller face and tilted ears. Eyes are walnut shaped in contrast to the oval eyes of Ragdolls. Also Ragamuffins are allowed to breed outside their stock every fifth generation to prevent continuous inbreeding and maintain genetic variety.

Ragamuffins are docile and gentle cats. They are non-aggressive and should not be allowed outdoors unsupervised. Still they are active and quite fond of playing with their toys and fetching them and climbing scratch posts. They show a very affectionate attitude towards people and lovingly follow them around the house. Ragamuffins are not demanding and do not require daily grooming. Their rabbit like fur does not matte easily and they have no particular health problems in their lines.

I grew up with at least one pair of cats (Siamese) around all the time, and there became my love of cats.

When I got married, both my husband and I decided to choose a cat for our new life together. Our criteria was, a family friendly cat which we could keep indoors, a cat which got along well with young children (as we were expecting a child), and a cat which was easy to groom and had a great temperament.Oh,and my husband liked large cats too.

After extensive research over several months and several cat shows, we finally decided that the Ragdoll cat was our perfect pet, and purchased a Mitted Seal Point male who we now call Bijou.

The following information should help you when choosing a ragdoll cat:

The Breed The Ragdoll was first bred in the 1960's in the USA. It was a cross between a Birman and a Persian-type cat. The breed was found to be so relaxed and laid back that it could be easily compared to a child's ragdoll when picked up. Ragdolls are slow to mature and reach full maturity in 3-4 years. Neutered males can weigh between 13-20 lbs, females about 5 lbs less. It's important to note that these are indoor only cats and should never be let outdoors unless supervised. This breed is so sociable, they can easily be taken by strangers. The coat of this cat is more like rabbit fur than standard cat fur. Although these animals are long hared, they are easy to groom and shed very little with no matting in the fur. A mystery to us indeed, but we like the low maintenance.

Personality
When choosing a Ragdoll cat, you want to take into account that Ragdolls are gentle and affectionate cats. They are sociable and loving and get along with children, other cats and dogs without problems. Although you may read that Ragdolls are quiet cats, that's not the case with ours. Bijou is very vocal and will let you know when he wants to be fed as well as "singing" for us sometimes at night when the lights go out. Although our 7 year old is quite rough with him, he tolerates the squeezing and tugging well. Our ragdoll has never once bitten anyone and probably never will as he is so laid back. One other thing: the ragdoll will frequently follow you around the house like a dog and is quick to come to you when called, and ours is no exception. He also loves to lay down with you on the bed and seems to be with you wherever you are.

Colors
Ragdolls come in a variety of colors and patterns. There are only four colors accepted by the Cat Fancier's Association: Seal, Chocolate, Blue, and Lilac. The colors come in pointed, mitted, or bicolor patters, so when choosing a Ragdoll cat, you will need to do your research to determine which you like.

When choosing a ragdoll cat, you will want to determine if you want a sweet tempered, family oriented cat. If so, then the big ragdoll might be the ideal cat for you.

If you are looking for more information about the Ragdoll cat, we can highly recommend a guide which will provide you with Ragdoll Cat specific tips for every stage of your cat's life.If you want the best advice to make your ragdoll happy, healthy, and well behaved, Click Here!

They don't require much exercise, they don't need obedience training, and they have a convenient litter box to go to the bathroom. In fact, it is often said that dogs have masters while cats have servants. Nevertheless, the breed of cat you choose will depend on a few factors that require a closer look.

If you choose a kitten, purebreds will be a more predictable choice since you'll know precisely how they'll look as adults. There are also popular breeds like Siamese, Maine Coon, and Persian that are chosen for their distinct look. There is more, however, to choosing the right cat for your household than meets the eye.

One should consider a cat's personality, for one thing. An Abyssinian is a much friendlier cat with strangers than a Siamese or a Bombay, for instance. An American Shorthair or a Ragdoll would be other good choices for houses with children. If there are other animals in the house, this may impact your decision as well, but most dog breeds can get along with cats, with patience.

Grooming is another issue. Long-haired cats like the Birman, Persian, and Angora breeds require frequent brushing to keep their fur in good shape, and may require baths and conditioner to eliminate tangled, matted fur.

Cats, like dogs and humans, have specific health issues that require either vaccinations or frequent monitoring to diminish their impact on your pet. Fleas and worms are parasitic pests that can cause a host of health issues, including anemia.

Some breeds, like Persians, have specific respiratory problems or eye diseases that require immediate attention. Regular vaccinations and checkups with a vet will protect against the most common viruses like Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

Some people are extremely sensitive or allergic to certain cat breeds, while others may cause no reaction at all. Scientifically, there are no known hypoallergenic cat breeds, though some claim that Siberians are. All cats have dander, and this is the element responsible for most allergies, not cat hair.

Cat breeds also differ by how active they are. Bengals, Burmese, Abyssinians, and Balinese are all examples of very lively breeds that need space to run and play, while the Bombay, Ragdoll, Russian Blue, and Havana Brown are known for being quiet and very docile.

Whatever breed you choose, it helps to have these specific requirements in mind, and to research the characteristics of different types of cats before making a final decision. This is the best way to choose a pet that fits your personality and thrives in your home environment.

If we believe the breeder, Ann Baker, the original Ragdoll cats were the consequence of a government experiment back in the 1960's. It seems that one of her neighbor's cats named Josephine, got into an accident involving a car, and for some reason was taken to a laboratory at the University of California. There was nothing special about Josephine. She was a non pedigreed Persian/Angora mix, white domestic long-haired cat, who by that time already had provided her owners with several litters, that was nothing special. Sired by several unknown Burmese-like cats, one of which had the Siamese point coloration, her litters tended typically to be playfully aggressive.

The next litter following her surgery however, produced a litter of unusually docile and friendly cats. Mrs. Baker claimed that it was all part of a secret government genetic experiment. Genetic experts have rejected this theory and of course the government denied any such project. None the less when Josephine's subsequent litter produced more of the "ragdoll" type kittens, Baker knew she was on to something. The name "Ragdoll" was coined because these original kittens, and all that have followed, have the tendency to go limp and completely relaxed when being picked up. Already a savvy breeder Mrs. Baker, believing she was on to something new and wonderful, bought several of the kittens and set out to create the new breed known as The Ragdoll cat.

In a brilliant move Mrs. Baker shunned the established cat registry, trademarked the name Ragdoll and started her own registry, International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) in 1971. Her strict breeding guidelines led to several riffs within the organization, until in 1975 Denny and Laura Dayton, began breeding what is now widely accepted as to days Ragdoll standard. The IRCA dissipated over the years, and after Baker's death in 1997 other factions emerged which eventually brought us the Ragamuffin line. If you are considering getting involved or you would like more in depth history, the largest international Ragdoll association is the Ragdoll Fanciers' Club International (RFCI)

Disposition And Health The Breed For You
Remember how this breed of cat got its name. Unlike the Maine Coon, a large cuddly cat whose origins are that of a hunter, the Ragdoll is docile, non aggressive, and a people lover. It is a very striking cat with those beautiful blue eyes, and long-haired Persian-like appearance, without posing the grooming problems usually associated the typical Persian. They get along wonderfully in a mufti pet environment, and kids just adore them.

For the most part the Ragdoll is a hearty, and healthy cat. A healthy Ragdoll with proper diet and exercise can live to be twenty years old. I don't want to scare you with big medical terms, so I will just say that Ragdolls can suffer from certain heart conditions. They also have a tendency to eat to fast which can stir up their sensitive stomachs and on occasion lead to vomiting. Of course like most cats, they can get upper respiratory and urinary tract infections.

Should We Bother To Train A Ragdoll All They do Is Lay Around
It is the between time that you might have to worry about. There are Ragdoll cats that go about their business using the litter box properly every day, get along with their house mates, and leave your furniture alone. Then there are Ragdoll cats that are prone to litter box mishaps, have fits of aggressive behavior, and sink their claws into every piece of furniture you own on a daily basis. If you are considering getting a Ragdoll for the first time or your cat falls into problem type, or you just want to learn everything you can about this magnificent breed than there is help for you. If you continue to surf the net you will be able to find a lot of information on cats, but very few breed specific total information on Ragdolls. For about what it might cost for bag of fancy cat food, a real Ragdoll owner and trainer has written just such a book. You will learn the secrets and tips on how to guarantee that your cat is healthy, happy, and well mannered. It is the best celebrity cat in the world. A ragdoll cat is possessed by the extra-ordinary beauty that could be found nowhere on earth. One would just stick to a ragdoll cat right at the first sight and of course, one would know that "love at first sight" is definitely true if you have a ragdoll cat. Every ragdoll cat breed differs in a few characteristics and the care you show on a ragdoll cat must be specific to that breed.

They have the most contrasting features. They are voluptuous in appearance but very mild at heart. They have a very long hair coat, which seems to be very difficult to maintain but if you train them they could have their hair neat as you have combed. A ragdoll cat could get to fifteen pounds and they are big cats. In some four years they would be fully mature and even after that, they would be the best kid you ever had. Though their maintenance might be a little tough, they are not much tough though.

You might have to trim their hairs and brush them occasionally to keep away from shredding. This brushing could be done once in a week and they would be bright like a queen the next day. The maintenance is never a trouble with these lovable Exotic Ragdoll cat breeds. They are not demanding and they are just playful all the time. The most owners like one great quality in this Ragdoll cat breed and that is they remain active all throughout the day.
Get The Best One For Your Family!

Ragdoll cat breed is one of the most famous cat breeds ever found. They have a voluptuous body and weigh good fifteen pounds if healthy. Children would love them for their bright blue and large eyes that would just roll around with the most passionate love that you would have never experienced. They wag their bushy tail show you, they love you.

 History Of Ragdoll Cats

To look back at the past years of the ragdoll cat breed, it was a cross between the most famous Birman cat and a long hair cat. They got their name from the fact that when the owner carries them, they would be hanging in from their hands just like one of the Raggedy Ann dolls, and hence, they got their name as the ragdoll cat breed. Their origination started almost in the nineteen hundreds halfway, and it took many years for the Cat Fancier's Association to approve them as pets. The great entertainment and companionship they offer to their owners are incomparable. They have their most gorgeous looks with the fluffy coat and deep lines.

There are a lot more Ragdoll cat breeds that could add interest to the cat lovers. One has to see all the qualities of such a Ragdoll cat breed and then get one for their kids and family. If both the parents are office-goers, it is better to get the kid the Ragdoll cat breed, which has short hair, and this would make easy maintenance and great acquaintance.
That is until I got a Ragdoll cat as a pet. This is not only exceptionally friendly animal, but will keep you company and follow you around the house all day and even prefer to stay with you all night (if you let it of course and can put up with its purring and plodding its claws in you showing all the love it can give). Yes this breed of cat loves human company and will sit on your lap wherever you are in the house, it will even play fetch and demand plenty of attention.

The Ragdoll cat is mainly an indoor cat and is one of the larger breeds ranging between 12 and 20 pounds. It has a quiet voice but loud purr, and will let you know if you are not paying your pet enough attention. This breed is easy to train, its fur never gets matted but still requires brushing to keep its coat looking healthy and is a great house companion.

When you pick up the Ragdoll Cat you will understand where it gets its name from, it will flop in your arms, to a point where with my cat I have to be careful putting him down because he has full trust that I will put him down gently as he is flopped over my hands and does not always have its feet ready to land like most breeds of cat.

As with any cat you must have a litter box, scratch pole, some toys and of course a food and water bowl. My cat will now only drink out of the small indoor water feature we have, so that needs to be cleaned out regularly.

With the Ragdoll's fine fur ranging in different colours, from blue, seal (a chocolate colour), cream and lilac (also called frost), bright blue eyes and excellent company this breed of cat comes very highly recommended from one happy Ragdoll owner.
