Now is the time to start looking at 2009 and planning for 2010. I took a 4 part series offered by my company through MetLife called RetireWise and I am glad that I did. Although it was hard to hear some of the areas that I have ignored for too long and that I'm going to have to work hard to catch-up I at least have some goals and tools to use for planning.

If given the opportunity to take a class like this - it is well worth your time. One thing that I did learn is that your Emergency Fund is not 6 months worth of wages but 6 months of your expenses. Now I am in the process of reviewing our expenses and seeing how much we can actually put away a month to fund this emergency fund. I've set-up the Orange ING Savings account which has a higher than normal interest rate for this account. I will have it directly deposited into this account.

I'm a little depressed about the situation with our car and not nowing right now what we will be able to do to get her fixed. This was not a planned budgeted item and after clearing out what little emergency fund I had left to cover the truck and the tree trimming makes this even more depressing.

Lois over at Walking on Sunshine had a wonderful quote by Mother Teresa:

"I know God won't give me anything I can't handle...
but sometimes I wish He didn't trust me so much."

I feel the same way right now - I'm just not sure I can handle much more. I'm the type of person that I worry and want to get things taken care of right away and not have to wait or depend on someone else. I think that is what I hate the most is having to wait on someone else to get around to working on my estimate and claim on my car. Patience is a virtue but not mine!

I'm trying to be as positive as possible, I just hate having to wait wait wait!

Back to the budget - I'm working through all the areas and re-evaluating our insurance policies, re-distributing my 401K - per the tools used it said I should be a mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds so I did a redistribution. I am still trying to find out more on how Bear's is distributed.

Now, if you work and your company has a 401k program with matching dollars be sure that you are taking full advantage of this program by contributing the max to get the maximum match.
My company matches up to 6% so I invest 6% and my company matches with another 6%. This means that in addition to my Pension, 12% is also being added to my 401K each month.

I'm also looking to sell some items on Ebay to put into our Emergency Fund. There are a few items I've gleened out of my horse equipment that I will be putting on Ebay along with some other items that I believe will sell. I've also got some items that I'll put on Craigslist. I'm also putting items on Freecycle to just find a new home for them. I'm getting a jump start to the new year so to speak.

So, if you have started planning for 2010, I would love to hear what your are doing!

Meal Plan Monday at Raging Bear Ranch

Well, I'm going to have to start squeezing every little area of our budget for more money. It is encouraging for newbies to frugal pro's to read Crystal and her husband's journey into debt free ownership of a new home.

Jamie at I am a Money Magnet shows you how to really stockpile, and use coupons with sales ads and roll Extra Care Bucks and Register Rewards. Not only does she show us how to increase our stockpiles she shows how you can share your wealth by giving. She regularly gives to her church food pantry.

Jane at Jane4Girls $800 Annual Budget takes on the challenge of making $800.00 last for 12 months for four people. Jane shows how creative you can be using homegrown vegetables from her own garden, using Mypoints.com and swagbucks to supplement. Jane is very resourceful and I like to read her blog and gain ideas on how to stretch our budget here at the Ranch.

Jennifer at Getting Ahead gives you a peak insider her household of 4 children, herself, and her husband. I love to read her blog and get some great ideas on budgeting, and frugal living. She really gives good advice on how they save money and how they went on vacation by saving in different areas over a period of time.

Beeb at Super Coupon Girl gives you great ideas on container gardening, couponing - I love her post about getting Gasoline for next to nothing using coupons and sale ads. She just won $10,000 dollars in a promotion where she submitted a 30 second video clip! WOW!

Kari at Erranbundus Bus blogs about how they converted a school bus into a traveling hotel! Seriously it is like a hotel inside. I love her wit and how she takes challenges in stride - with as many children as she has she has to be uber organized and that is what I love to read about are the trips they take and how she organizes them.

Lois at Walking on Sunshine give you a glimpse into the life of a military family. The family has just received news that the Colonel will be leaving for Afghanistan for 1 year. He leaves before Christmas. Check out Lois' blog and see how their family's faith in the Lord keeps them strong during these stressful days to come.

DeeDee at The Souls of My Shoes inspires me with her creativity and recipes. Her love for her husband and "kids" Lucy, Frank and Winston is inspiring and endearing. Her Mexican Hot Chocolate Recipe is an all-time favorite here.

Michelle over at Leaving Excess. Her organizational and budgeting skills are phenomenal not to mention her cooking strategies - like how to extend hamburger meat. I've learned quite a bit from Michelle and am so glad she decided to return to blogging after a summer hiatus.

Marilyn over at Marilyn's Money can make a dollar scream and then give you change back. I love to visit Marilyn and see how much pain she has subjected a dollar to and what she has received in return. It is amazing what she can do shopping and I get inspired everytime I read one of her posts.

Please stop by these ladies blogs and leave them a comment that you found them via Raging Bear Ranch!

Hey, one more thing - I'm grateful to all my readers and commenters - remember Bloggers love it when you leave us a comment!

Happenings at the Ranch

Well, we survived Black Friday! We did not do any shopping - can't - took Charlie (the Lincoln) to the hospital to get a code pulled. Remember my post when I said when the Yellow service engine soon light appears to take your vehicle in immediately? Well, we did and guess what - it's not good news, not good news at all. Charlie will need a new Transmission to the tune of about $3000-$3500.00! We are working on the financial part right now and hope to hear something tomorrow - Monday latest. I hate those little yellow service engine soon lights. Please pray that we will be able to get this resolved soon. I'm anxious to understand $$ money wise how this will impact our budget I have started. Patience is a virtue - just not one of my virtue's.

On to my next rant......Smokey Bones....They twittered about a coupon only available on Black Friday for a free appetizer. I thought, great, this will be awesome to use after the movies - we watched Ninja Assassin - blood, more blood, more blood and body parts - it was good but gory. We sat down to order and I told the waiter (who was not very friendly) I had a coupon and that we would like the nachos. He went and placed the order and then came back to state that the coupon would PROBABLY not work because the appetizers were already Half off! I said, why would Smokey Bones advertise this coupon all over twitter and send me an e-mail about it if it wasn't going to be available at certain times - further, I said the coupon state nothing about not being available during certain times. I told him that this was a form of false advertisement - I was polite until he got snippy and was not very nice. So, I twittered back to Smokey Bones and told them that it wasn't nice and we probably would not be back for awhile. I was very upset and I'm not sure why other then it had been an extremely stressfull day regarding my car and then this whole Coupon thing with Smokey Bones. It will be a while before we grace their doorstep and hand over our hard earned cash!

We are going to Soulard in the morning to pick up fresh veggies and fruit. We will pick up some carrots and apples for the horses - I have a couple of vendors that saves their less than perfect apples that people won't buy and I get them discounted for the horses. Miss Kit has got a real attitude lately, she's so full of enery!

Made the Pineapple Cranberries Minis for Thanksgiving and it was delicious! I was a little skeptical because I do not have much luck with Jell-0 but this time it worked out awesome. Bear didn't like them - he doesn't care for Cranberries - but that is okay - more for me! I also made deviled eggs with a new recipe from Kraft - You take a small brick of Cream Cheese, 1 tablespoon of Dijon Mustard (we used a gourmet Dijon that was on clearance) and 1 teaspoon of mayonaise along with the yokes. It was delicious and Bear even said they were really good and that he wanted me to make them again for Christmas. I also made his cheese ball with is so easy but will get rave reviews. Here is the recipe:

2 small bricks of Cream Cheese (can use fat free or one of each)
1 bunch of Green onions - cut them up into the green section.
1 jar of Dried Beef - cut into small sections all the beef.
1 small jar of diced pimentos - drain the liquid
1 small jar of diced olives

Mix them all together - I use a fork and sit on the couch and watch TV because it will take you sometime to get it thoroughly mixed. When you think it is mixed - mix it some more. Cover it and put it in the refrigerator and let it marinate. The longer it sits the better it tastes! Grab some ritz crackers and enjoy! Bear won't even share this with anyone - he hides it in the refrigerator.

About the 1st of November as I was talking to our neighbor an older gentleman walked up and asked if we could spare some food - seems he had been mugged and they took his groceries and the last $60.00 he had until he got his SSN check. I went shopping at Casa Thornton and gave him 2 boxes of instant potatos, 4 cans of soup, 4 vegetables, 3 cans of tuna, shampoo, conditioner, toothepaste, two tooth brushes, deoderant. My neighbor who is on unemployment gave him $20.00! He was so grateful. Well this morning he showed back up and asked my husband if we could spare some coffee and laundry detergent to get him and his wife by until he gets paid. We gave them the coffee and laundry detergent. He told Bear that he had asked a lady and she went and got her husband who slammed the door in his face! I felt sorry for the people who slammed the door in his face - I hope that they are not put into a position where they have to ask for help and have a door slammed in their face.

Well, that is all for now - Bear is giving me the stinky eye and it ready to head off to bed - it's been a fairly stressfull two days.

Take care and have a safe weekend - I received a bloggy award from a fellow blogger and will post about it tomorrow!

Party at the Ranch! Then we are off to visit the horses - give them their breakfast and then we will be back to start our meal.

Appetizers (Lunch) - Fresh vegetable plate with vegetable dip - Carrots, brocoli, cauliflower, olives, pickles, celery w/cheese & peanut butter

Deviled Eggs

Bacon wrapped stuffed jalepeno peppers - from the Pioneer woman.

Dinner -

Turkey Breast w/gravy
Homemade Triple pull-away rolls
Praline Sweet Potato Casserole - for me
Mashed potatos - for Bear
Greenbean casserole
Stuffing - cornbread, biscuits, chicken stock, onion, garlic, celery, eggs, pieces of turkey with a hint of sage. I carmelize the onions, garlic, and celery and then add them to the chicken stock to heat up and flavor! I also add a 1/2 stick of butter for flavor as well.
glazed carrots
Cranberry Jello - remember my post here?
Cranberry sauce
Butter glazed corn (delish) - 2/3 cups Fresh Corn, 1/2 stick of butter, chopped garlic (2 cloves), salt, pepper, chopped onion. melt the butter, add the onion and the garlic, let the onion and garlic cook for about 2-3 minutes and then add the corn, as the corn cooks it will begin to brown/carmelize. This is so good - I got the recipe from Kelly Rippa but I modified it.

Pumpkin Cheesecake
Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie - Bear's all time favorite

We will eat like a King and Queen for the entire Holiday Weekend and I'll try and freeze at least four dinners for later - for lunch or dinner when we are too tired to cook!

What are you having?

One of my heros - They are going to be closed on Friday and normally they would pay for both days. Well this year, Bear heard that they would be closed on Friday but were not paying the employees. Okay, no problem we'll use a vacation day to pay for that day! Well, the problem is that they require 48 hours notice for vacation time and they have been denying Bear's requests right and left and they weren't going to LET the employees know that Friday would not be paid until Wednesday.....are you following me on where this is going? Well, Bear heard about it last week, confirmed it and submitted his request last Friday. Still haven't heard. I know what they are doing - they will save money by not having to pay employees for that Friday and not giving them the opportunity to use a vacation day. Second, Bear has 3 days to burn between now and the end of the year or he loses them so he burned one Friday and we are trying to figure out what two days we can do over a weekend to give him a long weekend. They are just so unprofessional and unorganized for being a major distribution warehouse - oh the horror stories he tells me because they are not following logical processes. 'nuff said on that subject!

I got through with a major project at work and I have to admit, it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated - it's been a long work in progress but I finished it today and I can sigh a little bit but now I must jump over to the next project that will launch on Tuesday next and get the information rounded up and assimilated to the users! Only hope they will read it!

Bear fixed supper last night and I think he created/invented a new recipe for Chicken. He steams our chicken and he usually will make a white gravy with cream of mushroom soup but he was being creative and tried the Cream of chicken soup. I told him had he put a little milk in the soup and whisked it more with a little pepper it would have livened it up a little - it was good but I liked the mushroom gravy better. I think one of the issues with this soup was it was a reduced fat (I hate when I grab the wrong can in the store).

I'm so ready for a Margarita, I just might cheat and get one tonight! I forgot my lunch and had some Chicken Soup - that doesn't hang with you all day - now I'm hungry, and I won't be leaving here for another hour!

Have you ever had a song in your head and you just could not shake the darn thing out? Well, it's there and I'm embarrased to tell you what it is! Nope, wild horses could not drag it from me, NO! I'm not telling - Okay - Does this ring a bell - The hills are a live with the Sound of ......! Yep, in my head. Oh, that reminds me - take a look on my left-hand side bar for a link to our Giveaway - A 50th Anniversary, Special Edition, Original Cast Recording of the Sound of Music CD! It also comes with a free Sing-Along-Guide - I know shameless plug but I had to do it!

Nows the time to start getting your coupons and sales flyers organized and ready - believe me - you will thank me for it later - get to organizing (I need to figure out a way to kick my self in the pants - mine needs organizing too)!

Well, that is what has been going on since last post! What have you been doing, oh one more question.

Does your mind just go go go and the only time you slow down is when you get into a good book, movie or tv show that takes your mind off everything? Bear wonders why I have to have the TV on to go to sleep and I tell him I have to have it on so that I can listen to the noise - if I don't my mind is flooded with things that need to get done, things I need to worry about, things I shouldn't worry about and much, much more! Does that happen to you? I promise I won't tell! Honest!

Target Deals this week!

This Target List is complements of Deb over at Frugal Living and Having Fun! Red Pawed!

Duke has been caught! He finally showed his paw at where he was getting out at! The section in the Pictures is a section of our Garage that we are still in the process of taking down and re-doing so we had to have a way of securing the area so the dogs would not get out of their Kennel.

Please excuse the mess - we are working on it this weekend. We could not figure out how he was getting out because we didn't think he could climb it and everything "looked" secure but leave it to an Aussie to show you your weaknesses! I love him for being so smart but it can be a pain in my backside at times. Well, here he is - STUCK like there is no tomorrow at the top wedged between to fence panels!!!

I have the pictures to prove he is stuck at the top of the fence! Notice he has one foot on one side and one foot on the other side and he is holding on with his feet - I literally had to pry is feet open to make him release the fence he was that scared! Dad's in the background assessing the situation while I took these photos as proof! No dog in their right mind would have attempted what he has just done! Do you think he thinks he is a cat?

We caught him Red Pawed and the neighbors were enjoying Duke's newest adventure!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/RagingBearRanchTightwadProud/~3/IYmkuVQfCR8/caught-red-pawed.html" title="Caught! Last week it rained for almost 4 days straight!

I've been working on our Budget for 2010 and goals that we hope to accomplish - have you started on yours? I hope so, it is the only way to keep track of your Money! I am hoping to have our new budget and goals posted by mid - December.

We are ordering another dumpster to finish the garage and some remodeling inside the house.
I told Bear that everthing that was not nailed down was being put on Freecycle/craigslist/ebay and if they didn't move then they would be donated or in the dumpster.

Hello, my name is Nancy, and I am a hoarder! There I said it - I hoard STUFF and I'm tired of hoarding STUFF so I am systematically going through every nook and cranny in our house and if I can't reuse, repurpose, or relocate it - it goes.

We are getting estimates for a new roof for our house and I was floored by our first estimate: $10,750.00 - Really, Really now......NOT! Second estimate came in at $7549.00 - Okay, I'm slowly coming out of the frugal coma I went in over the first estimate. We are still waiting for a few more estimates to arrive.

Still trying to convice Duke that he needs to stay in his kennel when we are gone. It's not like it is an over-crowded situation - it is a huge kennel taking up 1/4 of our yard. He told on himself Friday night when he got himself wedged between two of the wire panels. He was wedged at the top of the panels which are 8 feet high. He was stuck and could not move at all! Bear re-did the panels and I won't say we have accomplished our goal - I might jinx it - but so far so good!

So far this month - I'm in a frugal coma over this - we have spent outside of our normal budget:
Driver side window replacement in the truck - 172.59
Knock sensor replaced on the truck - 161.48 - You know those pesky little yellow "Check Engine Soon" lights that pop-up when you drive - it really means to check them NOW not soon! Trust me on this - take it as soon as possible. If we hadn't it would have been much worse!
Tree trimmed - 375.00

Needless to say - we did not anticipate this so we are on a spending freeze for the next 60 days to replinish our Emergency Fund!

I can't wait for Wednesday afternoon when Bear and I are off work till MONDAY! Four full days together - can't get any better than that - well it could if we both worked from home and were back in Oklahoma!

I'm planning our garden for next spring - Tomatos, Onions, Peppers, Green Beans, Corn, Okra and maybe some herbs.

It's been hectic at work trying to get everything done before we go on Holiday and then a short time frame before we are again off for Christmas. Bear and I have decided to make it a Movie Marathon as our Christmas present to each other. There are a few movies we would like to see so we will do this over the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. Oh, that reminds me, we went to see New Moon yesterday. I have got to get the books! I'm for Team Jacob - who are you for?

We went to get hay today from our hay supplier outside of Alton. We guard our hay contacts like hunters and fisherman guard their hunting and fishing spots! I'm so thankful that we have Kenny as our supplier of hay. He is just Awesome and their hay is top notch! We usually eat lunch in Alton and today we ate at Long John Silver's for $5.95 for both of us - I had a $2.00 off coupon for a Platter and they give you so much food that we just shared it. We had water!

We ate at Nonna's yesterday for Lunch - I received a $10.00 gift certificate for my Birthday. They had a wonderful brunch buffet for 7.95 each and we both had water so we both ate for $6.00 with my coupon! We have another $10.00 off that is good through December 24th so I'm sure we will hit the Buffet again. I also received several $$ off coupons, free coupons for my birthday - here is a list:
Red Robin - Free Gourmet Burger & Ice cream Sundae
Ruby Tuesday - Free Burger
LoneStar Steakhouse - $15.00 off coupon - we ate for less than $7.00!
Nonna's - $10.00 off coupon
Crusoes - $15.00 off Coupon
Nonna's - Thanksgiving thank you - $10.00 off
Crusoes - $15.00 off anniversary coupon.
Stone Cold Creamery - Free Sundae
Culver's - Free Sundae
Smokey Bones - $10.00 off coupon
So as you see - it pays to sign up for the E-mail clubs at your local restaurant.

In addition, I received two coupons from Famous Footwear - $15.00 off Gold Card & $10.00 Gift certificate for my Birthday. I still have two pair of almost free tennis shoes so we got Bear a pair of Black Sketchers that he has wanted (he likes black tennis shoes - I don't) - they were normally $59.99, reduced down to $49.99 but with the two coupons - we paid $25.38 for them which I thought was a great deal.

I did take advantage of the Old Navy - $1.00 off the fleece scarves - a few extra Christmas presents that I will personalize. These are nice - I got me a couple to match the Kohls gloves I got for free last year after Christmas.

I have one more coupon to use for Purina to get a bag and then I can send in my rebate for $15.00 plus my coupon for two free bags when I buy eight! Win-Win with the coupons.

Oh, I also won a $50.00 Amazon.com gift certificate from One2One for participating in the Brandi Carlile review post. I am just so excited - I spend a great deal of time putting these reviews together after listening to the music! I'm am $50.00 closer to my KitchenAid Mixer! Woo Hoo!

If you haven't checked out the Ranch for a while - be sure to sign up for our Giveaway. Coat an 8 1⁄2-inch springform pan with cooking spray. Wrap foil around the bottom of cake pan. Crumple additional aluminum foil to create a “ring base” about 5 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, stir together brownie mix, two of the eggs, the oil, and coffee drink until combined. Pour into prepared pan.
3. Place foil ring in bottom of slow cooker; pour 1⁄2 inch of hot water into bottom of slow cooker. Using 2 long strips of foil, make an “X” over foil ring and bring it up along the sides of slow cooker to assist removing pan from slow cooker. Place springform pan on top of ring and the “X” in slow cooker. Stack 6 paper towels; place over top of slow cooker bowl. Secure with lid.
4. Cook on High heat setting for 1 to 1 1⁄2 hours. (Do not lift lid for the first 1 hour of cooking.)
5. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Add sugar, flour, and salt; beat until smooth. Add the remaining two eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down sides of bowl. Add cream and vanilla; beat until combined. Pour over brownie mixture in slow cooker.
6. Cover and cook for 1 1⁄2 hours more. Turn slow cooker to Low heat setting. Cook for 1 to 1 1⁄2 hours or until cheesecake is set with a wet-looking center. Turn off heat and let sit, covered, for 30 minutes.
7. Use foil strips to lift springform pan from slow cooker. Place pan on wire rack; let cool to room temperature. Chill in pan for at least 4 hours. contacted me with an opportunity to review the new Trident Layers gum, I jumped at the chance. How did they know that I was a gum aficionado?

What is Trident Layers? Trident Layers is made with real fruit flavor for an unbelievable taste experience! It has three distinct and visible colored layers that make itas great tasting as it is fun to look at. There is no other gum like it!

I have a friend who loves gum and we compare gum like some compare restaurants. We had discussed the new Trident Layers but neither of us had tried it.

I received the package in the mail on Friday. There was a wonderful fragrance wafting from the package which made my taste buds flitter.

I opened the package to find two different flavors of the Trident Layers. Wild Strawberry + Tangy Citrus and Green Apple + Golden Pineapple were the two flavors Trident wanted me to review.

I carefully opened the Wild Strawberry + Tangy Citrus, the piece is the same size as a normal Trident piece but THICKER! Like a wine enthusiast I sniffed the piece taking in the full bouquet of fragrance. I then carefully placed the gum on my tongue and if sparks could have flew they would have flew as the flavor immediately started to take over. I first tasted the Tangy Citrus of orange and then wait, what was that tease flavor, yes, there it is Wild Strawberry! You would not think these two distinct flavors would work but they complement each other well. I also judge gum by how long the flavor lasts and I am happy to report that this gum has some staying power!

Next to be reviewed was the Green Apple + Golden Pineapple Trident Layers. The piece is the same size but thicker than a normal Trident gum piece. I sniffed the piece and the bouquet made my taste buds scream! I placed the piece on my tongue and immediately knew that this was going to be my favorite flavor. The Golden Pineapple flavor was delish and then all of a sudden the Green Apple flavor hit. I loved how the two flavors were distinct at first and then melded together. The flavor in this gum also had staying power which is a big plus on my list.

By far the Green Apple + Golden Pineapple Trident Layers gum was my favorite flavor. They both were good but I loved the Green Apple + Golden Pineapple the best. In addition, I love the bouquet of scent that waft from the packs! My desk area never smelled so good!

Visit Trident at http://www.tridentgum.com/ for more information about Trident Layers and their other products.

Click here for a $.75 off Coupon.

I would definitely, unequivocally, recommend this gum to anyone looking for a good, flavorful gum with staying power!

Disclosure: Please note that Trident contacted me to participate in a review of their new Trident Layers Gum in these two new flavors. They provided me with two flavors to try and review. The opinions given in this review are my opinions regarding the product in review.
