BDA London Royal Albert Dock 2009
MATCH REPORT

The season finale… home waters.

What started on a cold, grey day in Liverpool was ending on a warm sunny day in London. In between we managed to cram in Exeter, Bristol, Stockton (although I wasn’t present), Chinatown Lions at LRC, Preston, Worcester and Bewl Water. And I also managed to tag along with Typhoons to race in Hong Kong!

We entered the day with two crews… we had a mix of young and old, experienced and inexperienced. But we worked as a team (well two teams), and produced some amazing races with excellent results.
Raging Bulls did very well and should be proud of their achievements as many of the crew were competing for the first time! And a lot were only racing for the 3rd or 4th time! But I cannot report on how the races went as I was not in the boat…

So onto the Raging Dragons... We put together the strongest team possible for the day and we were looking to blow the other teams away. We had races to win and bragging rights to fight for!

200m

The first race of the day… and in typical Rage fashion we were late! Ha… home waters, we knew what time our race was and we still couldn’t get to the start line on time. Verbal warning was given and verbal abuse from Eddy followed! Anyway… we put this behind us and focused on the race. First race of the day on our own waters… we HAD to lay down our intentions and we did. From the start we propelled our boat forward and surged to a half boat lead before reaching out and pulling away for a fantastic finish in 47s and winning the heat in a convincing manner. This was to be the second fastest time in the heats and we knew we had the potential for scoring some big points.
The second race was the 200m Semi Final… This was always going to be tough. Kingston Royals (consistently one of the best teams throughout the season) was next to us and we knew that it would be between to the two of us to qualify outright for the Major Cup Final. As soon as the starter shouted go we went for it… And in another typical Rage style, the dragon head came off and disrupted the left side of the boat and we lost a couple of metres on Kingston… We fought back and pulled level, but ultimately we lost by a dragon head.

Bewl Water
RACE REPORT
Ok, so it wasn’t a BDA event and there was literally nothing at stake, but Team Rage ventured into Kent, the ‘Garden of England’ and set up camp in the grounds of Bewl Water on a late Friday night to prepare for a weekend of Dragon Boat Racing.

<description>[CDATA[
Please congratulate your team mates who are now BDA Certified Level 2 Centre Coaches meaning that they are now qualified to helm and run a training session as set out by BDA guidelines and also helm charity races. The new 'coaches' are:

Cheng

Eddy

Gajan

Jenny

Ronald

Tin

This is another milestone in Rage's history as they are the first BDA certified coaches for the team! This does not change the roles of the current coaches, but it does mean we now should have at least one certified coach at each session even if they are not taking the training session, and ensures we abide by BDA safety guidelines.

<description>[CDATA[ Raging Dragons hosted an eye Dotting Ceromony for our First Dragon Head, for the Dragon Boat

(vids and pics to see)

Please read more about the Ceremony below

The Eye Dotting Ceremony

Chinese Emperors of old called themselves ‘Dragons.’ Dragon boats have good spirits dedicated to providing enjoyment for the racers. Before the (season's) races commence a Taoist Priest will offer prayers to the spirits of the dragon boats.

The priest then makes offerings of fruit, jasmine tea, alcohol and rice. These offerings appease the spirits of the water and calm them in preparation for the racing ahead. If that was not done, legend has it that the Water Gods would clash with the Dragon spirits of the boats, with potentially disastrous consequences.

Also offered at this time is symbolic money, bank notes from the Bank of Hell. The smoke from these notes goes to Heaven and appeases the Gods to ensure safety and good racing. He will also throw some notes on to the water for the Sea Gods. Having warded off evil spirits with his earlier prayers, the priest can now bring the dragon boats to life and make them strong for the racing ahead.

Finally, having successfully resuscitated the ‘dragons,’ the priest offers thanks to heaven and the Gods, paving the way for future successful races.
