The rich and famous life. And its opposite number, the hard life. Does life have to be fantastically famous? Maybe it does. What then? We may live in a mansion, we still die. To control a lot of stocks and bonds, sure would be fine. I couldn't agree more. Not having material possessions, that would not be so cool. Again, pretty simple. I have always imagined that I would never find it hard to partake of the financially independent life. I'm quick enough, I thought. I can take whatever life throws at me and run with it.

This is easier when one is young and his whole life before him. What occurs when one begins to grow older and strengths start to weaken? Will the opportunities also stop? No one can see how everything will turn out and everyone dies at one time or another. What is the advantage of living a rich or a poor life? Come to think of it, the cars we desire don't last forever and neither do we.

From the last time

I have not been doing any web work for quite sometime now and I am feeling quite rusty when it comes to things like Websites. I would not be like this if I had not been doing some farming in Cagayan de Oro City. It's just a small farm with some bananas and it is pretty much planted to thes delicious plants which I hope will one day bear delicious fruits.

Like I said, I have been neglecting my web activities and it is about time I spent some time doing some of these activities that I so sorely miss now. I should get me another computer to host some websites. I have more or less decided on running Xen on a dual-core Athlon but I don't have the equipment yet so that is just a plan.

Cagayan de Oro City has been a mixed blessing. I have not really done the thing that I wanted to do which is to get me a project that can earn me some dough. I have learned a few things though which might come in handy in the future.

No Rails, Some Seaside

I have not been doing any Seaside work for a number of months owing to the fact that my little project with the Lotto Pool fell through and I was trying to get something else going but that didn't happen either. So, I was just doing offline stuff which was not really helping me get ahead at all but it did give me some distance from the things that I was trying to do but not succeeding. This may or may not have been good at all but I did get some research done on virtualization.

Anyway, here's Cagayan de Oro City with another one: Cagayan de Oro City. My Cebu City site has made pr1, surprise, surprise. Dumaguete is still in the boondocks as far as Google goes but Dumaguete has made some headway. Check out: Jai Alexander.

Seaside resting

It has been a while since I took down my website written on the Seaside framework of Squeak. This was mainly due to necessity which means it's not permanently off the web, just allosing it to rest for a while. Doing so freed me from the business of trying to figure out what to do with the website and allowed me to turn to other pursuits mainly, checking out what I could do next.

This brought me to virtual machines and their permutations. Little did I realize that there was such a plethora of ideas and implementation of virtual machines existing on the web.

No one can say that the Internet is boring or that trying to make sense of Internet Programming is tedious. If one is interested in Web Programming, one can have one's pick of different platforms to use. Depending on one's temperament and one's level of expertise, one can usually find a framework that will suit one's temperament. For my part, I researched first before committing to a particular flavor of programming tools. Most of these tools share common properties and capabilities and I do believe that underneath the differences there are legitimate facilities that will justify one's commitment to these tools whatever they may be.

Seaside and Ching's World

Ching's World. Essentially, an experiment, a test balloon, a toy website which had very modest ambitions. Doing static html for a while gets one tired and eyes red from having to check where tags should go and checking if everything lines up correctly.

Ching's World was an attempt to learn Seaside. Learning is easier and accomplished faster if done hands-on style. Merely theorizing and imagining what might be a nice page does not help one to learn web programming. Simple things like rendering an image was a challenge when working on Ching's World.

Cebu City cries out for content. There is much to be done and one can get overwhelmed very easily by the idea of capturing Cebu City on a web page. How is it to be done? What aspect of the city needs to be highlighted?

Dumaguete sees the world with gentle eyes and this is how she likes it. Cagayan de Oro City is more in-your-face. The Night Cafe is one such thing. It bites your ass when you try to navigate Divisoria on weekends. While Dumaguete lulls you with the gentle slapping of the waves on the seawall of the Boulevard, Dumaguete challenges your tolerance when metal vie against metal in making progress an inch at a time. Cagayan de Oro is less forgiving to the pedestrian and motorist alike on weekends.

Slowly Getting There

Learning Seaside for me involved fits and starts, nothing smooth or steady, just regular difficulty dogging my heels which is good because it opened my mind to some very basic and fundamental questions regarding web programming. Where Rails impressed me with its mastery of its database magic, I could not quite get what I had to do to write a simple webpage. The part where it creates folders for you and builds scaffolding was all very nice and neat but all I wanted was to be able to say "Hello World".

When I finally figured out Seaside I found that all you needed to do to say "Hello World" was to override #renderContentOn: and make your html statements. There are Seaside equivalents to HTML tags such that

"Hello World"

would be written as html paragraph: 'Hello World'. within the #renderContentOn:html method. Everywhere else was just regular Smalltalk programming.If you really wanted HTML-style code you could say html html: '

Some text

' and it would be rendered just the way you would expect it to which is

"Hello World"

.
Ching's World was built on Seaside. It is less a website than a journey to knowing how to make a website. The Philippine cities of Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete take center stage on Ching's World

A little WebPlus 6

One cannot be thinking about creating a website without encountering Dreamweaver. It is reputed to be one of the top software for creating websites and I got hold of a tutorial which gave me an insight as to what load of trouble I had brought upon myself. I realized that there was more, a whole lot more than meets the eye when it came to websites. Although I just skimmed through the tutorial, I realized one thing and that was, whatever tools one uses to create a website, the one common aspect which one cannot do without is: organization. One cannot just put things together in a hodge podge and hope that things will turn out alright. One has to organize the website into important key elements:

Landing page
Navigation bar
Inside pages

The landing page is the most important page since it is the first thing that greets the visitor to the website. As such, the webmaster has to make a decision if he will put everything on that landing page or to make it simple welcome sign with minimal graphics to make it load faster. The second aspect is the Navigation bar which will guide one's visitors to the various portions of the website. The next part is the pages that the navigation bar points to. These need to be properly organized and structured in order to allow the visitors to the website easy access to everything in it.

I also took a look at WebPlus 6 from Serif Software. They offer a free version which you can download and use without any time limit. A companion tool is PhotoPlus 6 which is a photo editor. I downloaded both without any hassle and proceeded to register for free which was kind of cool. One cannot have a website without any pictures or graphics thus, one needs a photo editor to complement the website creation tool. One reason why a photo editor is imperative when creating a website is that a picture or graphic can cause a page to load very slowly causing today's web surfer to quickly lose interest. With a good photo editor one can lower the number of pixels without sacrificing color and quality as well as use standard tools like cropping and enhancing pictures and graphics with effects. Considering that there are more than 50 million websites in the World Wide Web, one can feel the intensity of the competition to grab the attention of visitors to the website.

One can learn a lot from using WYSIWYG editors and this was one of my criteria for selecting a website creation tool. I looked at a few HTML tools and decided that I was too unsophisticated for them. I needed a crutch and a simple tool seemed like a godsend.

Web servers

Trying to learn about websites inevitably led me to Web Servers. I did not know too much about websites and how they work but I had the Search Engine to help me locate information so I just Google away. The most ubiquitious web server is Apache and there are a lot of reading materials on it. However, I could sense that it was not going to be easy to tuck under my belt so I look around for something easier to digest. My friend BotP, is a big fan of Apache and I get a lot of inputs from him regarding the Web.

Browsing around a bookstore, I came upon Python Web Programming by Steve Holden. It looked authoritative and, on scannining the pages, I liked the topics which seemed to me well-covered. A cursory inspection made me like it as it seemed to have everything that I needed to learn about how to make automated websites. I had read a little Python before though I never did any programming with it, my philosophy being, 'do it only when you have a suitable project'. So, Python was just there tucked away somewhere in my mind; I liked the simplicity and directness as well as the indentation that also doubles as block scoping, unlike Java which I positively have an aversion for ( with apologies to all who might feel offended. It is just an ignorant fool's opinion after all)..

Steve Holden mentions a lot of neat details like, the Red Hat distribution of Linuz was written in Python, how the Google search engine was written in Python and a number of cool stuff. He also mentioned Xitami, a lightweight web server which he endorses enthrusiastically while presenting his own webserver written also in Python.

Hypertext Markup Language as it is formally called, I had read about Hypertext in Byte Magazine and I said to myself what a cool way to organize a paper or an article where clicking on a hyperlink would bring you to a detailed discussion of that word or phrase that was linked. So, I was not totally ignorant about it altogether. When the Internet started to gain momentum I started seeing books on HTML starting to pop up in the bookstores along with the other Markup Languages like XHTML, DHTML, XML, VRML, RHTML and others. I thought this is good, there's so many sources of information. So I bought the thickest book on HTML.I figured this has got to be the granddaddy of them all. I scanned through the pages and it seemed easy but it entailed a lot of memorizing of terms and keywords that signified precise meanings.

I did not really plan to have a website right away so I was just taking it easy about learning HTML. I also read about Javascript and how it gave websites a way to be dynamic and interactive and this was more exciting news. although I had no inkling at the time that I would be in some trouble since it turned out that I did not really care for Java and Javascript. From surfing for tools in the Internet I ran acros PHP and how it has grown from a simple tool to a full-blown scripting language for programmatically getthing things done like working with a database. At this time I had not heard abot blogs and blogging. That fun was for the future.

What kind of website?

I did not really have a clear idea of what kind of website I wanted to make. They say imitating the living is flattery and it might be true but most original ideas generally spring from some old idea floating around and being part of everyday reality. One thing I did want to do was to bring my songs to the Internet; not just the old songs I used to sing but songs of my own invention. You could say it is an idea or desire that just would not go away. I have stopped writing songs now and of the many hundreds I had written I could probably just remember a few which is just as well, if I myself cannot remember them then who would want to listen to a song which is so un-memorable?

Last night I ran into a banner advertising for free Bulletin Board systems where you can discuss anything you care to discuss with your community. It would mean that you have a group with common interests. I signed up for my free site and it was very easy and painless to do for one who has not done it at all. One thing I noticed was that the whole site itself was not pretty. It was free, it was easy but it was just not pretty. I thought I should make something that looks nice and pretty like a flower or a sunrise. I did admire their technical skills and the fact that they are giving it away for free which leads me to wonder, they must be making their money in ways that I still have to discover.

Desire precedes creation...starting out

For a long time now I have harbored the dream of creating my own website, not the kind that you get for free where you do not have the freedom to do anything that you like. I do not dislike banners and ads because I know that they are very necessary to keep a website alive. But what I wanted was the freedom to show ads of my own choosing which would complement the website itself.

I did not want to sell anything nor to make a lot of money from the Internet. I do not know how they do it. I do dnot even know how this business of making websites work. At the time when the desire to create a website was sown in my mind I did not have a direct access to the Internet. I could go to an Internet Cafe and pay by the hour but the big problem was there was too many people and connections were very slow and prone to disruptions. There were only dial-up connections at the time. Surfing for materials online was not really so easy to do in those times.

I had had some experience with programming having started with a simple Applesoft Basic Interpreter where I would key in my program and enjoy watching it do stuff like adding two numbers together. I used an Apple II computer with 48K RAM and that was way cool at the time. The thought that I would be able to do even cooler things in the future made the business of typinig my progam every morning not at tedious as it really was. Tthere was only Basic and it suited me just fine.
