Startup School 2009

This day I had the pleasure to attend the 2009 edition of Y-Combinator’s Startup School 2009 helded at Berkley university, California. When I read the schedule of the event I stood impressed by the names of the speakers in particular I was curious to hear Mark Zuckerberg , the creator of Facebook, and Jason Fried, from 37 Signals. The event begun with a very entertaning presentation from Paul Graham focused on determing what are the key factors of a successful startup and, more generally, what really means be a startup founder. Then it was the turn of Greg McAdoo from Sequoia Capital who gave us advices on how and when a startup need to do fund-raising.

Jason Fried tryed in his speech to demiystify some of the common sentences related to a startup business; in his opinion you don’t need to search an initial investment to start a company; that’s because if you begun with money your first thought are on how spend it (employees, fornitures, ...); but if you don’t have money you focus only on how to make money.

Next went Evan Williams and Biz Stone, founders of twitter; their interview was full of funny anecdotes and tips; one over all: In the beginning of Twitter someone said ‘twitter is fun but it’s not useful’. Ev dryly remarked: ‘so is ice cream’.

After lunch the conference continued with an interview with Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, and ended up with a party helded within the Y combinator offices !

RailsConf Europe '08 is almost ready to go!

... and we are preparing our bags to join this amazing convention hosted in Berlin.

Some FACTORY people will join us during this event. The conference will officially start on the 2nd of September, with tutorial sessions, but unofficially everybody knows that the show is going to start the evening before with Bratwurst on Rails night.

In short it is a party organized by Berlin Ruby User Group (thanks guys) to meet conference people and Rails coders for a few hours. If you want to have additional information about this, refer to the events official site

Spread out the good novel

RailsConf is over and I was so lucky to be there this year too. GotThingsDone.com presence at the all-important convention about Ruby on Rails has been centered around spreading the good novel” out all over the world. Let me explain you why.

We were pretty impressed last year discovering that quite a few people were covering the event professionally with videos, interviews and keynotes streaming. The most part of the attendees having a blog were summarizing the convention in real time on their web sites and they did a good job, but I soon realized people want to see their heroes, want to hear their voices. Dancan made amazing pictures and he shared them on Flickr, but you know, they cannot speak.

So, this year we decided that Rails is too important to not have any good video interview to show the people who were not as lucky as we were. We wanted to show what a revolution was taking place in Portland.

So, in the last few days preceding the conference the crew at GotThingsDone.com and I planned to interview some of the people we thought are leading the Rails scenario right now. We aren’t professional in producing videos, but we made our best to share the intense moments we had there.

So I’d like to say thank you to the people we interviewed, because they were so patient and kind with us. Thanks to David Heinemeier Hansson, Joel Splosky, Jeremy Kemper, Ola Bini, John Straw, Ryan Singer, Rick Olson, Chris Wanstrath and Geoffrey Grosenbach.

And then thank you to Annalisa, Sandro and Joe for their wonderful job.

At Portland we were about 1,800 people. Right now our interviews have been viewed more than 7,300 times :)

It took us a while but we’re finally close to the release date of WhoDoes 2.0

The philosophy

What drove us to this release was the need to make our product as simple as working on paper. Most of your daily planning is normally done without following any particular schema, you simply start writing activities as soon as they come to mind and only then you choose who will be the person responsible for them.

While working in a team, it could occur that all players need to plan (or detail) their activities that could influence others, in this way it is necessary to use a tool that mixes collaborating and handling deadlines, in a smart way.

Nowadays a to-do list driven management system is the key factor for smart and easy project management. This statement is true, but we believe that it is not enough to manage a project’s workflow, the upcoming screencast gives you a taste of one of the amazing features that we have incorporated into the new version of whodoes to help make managing projects easier and successful.

Code, Art & RailsConf moments

The RailsConf Europe is over but we love to remember all the great moments we had there. I loved Dave Thomas’ speech in particular (you can find a brief introduction here and we hope to publish the entire speech soon). He talked about engineering, code and elegance and that reminded me of an event we went to some weeks before the Berlin conference.

We were in Venice – Italy – at the 52° Biennale of Venice to complete art works exposed there with our art: Code… Ruby code.

BTW, next week we’ll be present at SMAU in Milan, the largest annual trade show for information and telecommunications technology in Italy. Look for us at the Wave Group stand.
