I will continue to share my own interior design, decorating, gardening and organisational tips with you as I intend to keep this blog going.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

With love

Now that our client base is growing we've continued work for our regular customers. Other one-off tasks have included: -

Present at the Trinity Church Event, Gosforth
Invoice processing for local building merchant
Christmas cleaning for busy professional couple
Creating a Hollywood Boudoir
Website design and implementation for local building company and a local therpaist > once completed we will share the link with you
Oven cleaning in two family homes in Benton and Gosforth

A Floral Christmas

2012-12-01T17:05:00.000+01:00

From plain walls to a floral feature; in just a few hours this living room was given a fresh coat of warm cream and a floral feature wall using a lovely warm design by Next Home. All fresh and ready for Christmas.

Plain feature wall....

....soon became floral warmth

leading up the stairs

with fresh cream on other walls...

...brightening up the whole room

From Geordie Land to Hollywood

2012-11-26T18:41:00.001+01:00

It's not all black and white

Whilst one young man leaves the nest of his family home his younger sister swaps bedrooms. Changing the black walls to crisp white and removing the Newcastle United football team wallpaper for Hollywood glamour, this bedroom was transformed in 2 days.

With beautiful glitzy glamorous locally made curtains, framing the window, to a matching throw the stage is now set for our customer to add her personal touches to her new boudoir.

Newcastle United is removed....

....as was the dark black wallpaper adorning other walls

with a blank canvass to work from

Hollywood glamour soon became the new feature wall

...a little hint of Marilyn...

...to Audrey...

...to famous scenes

...cowboy and general cinematic memorabilia...

...to the Director's chair...

floor length sparkle curtains and throw

the room is ready for the teenage touches...

we love how the sparkles on this fabric show up many colours...

...so, its not all black and white...Rainbow's are still present!

And look at the beautiful Rainbow flowers received for the work we did....

Time to Decorate?

2012-10-03T18:49:00.000+02:00

I am often amazed at how customers don't realise how long things can take when contemplating decorating.

Here's a little "How To" to get you started: -

(a) removal of wallpaper - with a good steamer this usually takes in the region of 15 minutes per strip; taking that time scale walk around your room counting the number of strips and add another hour to the total (clearing up and general tidying).

(b) painting a ceiling - using a roller on an extension, average sized room usually takes me around 45 minutes (includes preparation of paint, putting down dust sheets and cutting in to the walls)

(c) gloss painting the skirting boards and architrave (that's the bits around your door) - taking average sized room with 1 door way and if its white on white, around 1 hour.

(d) gloss painting a door (one side only)...remember, only paint one side of the door and leave the other side when you do the hallway. If its a flat door I find these harder to do than the 6 panelled type. Flat door - takes me 45 minutes to an hour (usually staggered as you need to do two coats). Panelled door takes me 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many coats (usually 2-3).

(e) emulsion of walls - again, taking a standard sized room and a light colour (say we are working in white) it would take me around 2 to 4 hours. However, if the colour you choose is dark then extend this by another 2 hours (cutting in - that's the bit between ceiling and wall and wall and skirting) can take time if you aren't familiar with it. A good tip is to make sure you use a LARGE brush and load it with paint moving swiftly along the wall. Practice on newspaper to get the technique.

Counting up the time will then give you some idea how long it will take.

Remember to account for preparation, breaks and clearing up. I usually give myself an hour preparation, a half hour break and an hour clearing up.

If you'd like me to prepare a "Room Plan" for you, I can do this for a one off cost of £25. It will detail everything you need for a successful DIY project and ensure you won't waste time.

Anyone for Ice Cream?

2012-08-01T14:05:00.000+02:00

We've started to have a few nice days of sunny weather giving me the chance to get some furniture painted.

This collection of side tables needed a new lease of life so using a lovely shade of cream I gave them all a sand, undercoat, and five light coats of paint before a nice spray of gloss to protect the tops. I can now sit back and enjoy a nice ice-cream!

The old small table.. part of a nest of three

the overall colour no longer matched the interior

looking rather dull and in need of some new life

Looking good against the cream walls
and lace curtains

shined tops ready for guests to use

the tables and their new look!

We used Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood followed by Non Drip Gloss (Fresh Cream) followed by a light spray of Plasti Kote clear spray to protect the tops. Total cost for project including paint and labour, £100

Sunshine in the Attic

2012-08-01T13:41:00.000+02:00

I recently supported a family in need of utilising their attic space. The family showed me what items they wished to keep and I spent time putting these into categories, boxing and packaging items and preparing a plan for the family to use when wishing to locate their treasured items.
They now have an area where they can easily store further items if they wish and spend time de-cluttering when they no longer need things.

We have treasured antiques, children's school books
and university course work...

...followed by treasured memories (photographs, stamp collections and more)
with Christmas decorations, party paraphernalia and Mum's wedding dress...

....to camping equipment, suitcases for travel
and nostalgic baby toys bought for the children.

Lavender and Catching Butterflies

2012-08-01T13:18:00.000+02:00

I love how lavender grows so gracefully.

In my garden I have it growing in pots and I love it by the doorways. When I come and go I purposely brush past the flowers and leaves to release the scent.

I recently cut some back, dried it and made some perfect little coat hanger bags to keep my clothes and wardrobe smelling fresh.

Lavender is a wonderful indoor plant; producing
a natural scent in your home.

So easy to dry; simply collect, tie at the ends
and hang upside down in a cool dark place
for 2-3 weeks

Alternatively buy ready bags on-line

Hand sewn lavender bags made with pretty butterfly material
and ribbon hook; perfect to keep clothes
and your wardrobe smelling fresh

Backdrop for Green

2012-07-19T23:00:00.001+02:00

These photographs speak for themselves...

From dull grey....

...to rich brown; a lovely backdrop for those green plants

...the main focus on the garden with no real depth...

...is soon transformed to show off the lights and pots.

...from dull grey and slippery green decking...

...to a lovely relaxing area with depth and welcome!

Colour in the Wardrobe

2012-06-25T20:15:00.000+02:00

It seems to be that time of year when a good clear out makes us feel better. I've been doing the same; although I have to be honest and admit it would never have got done if we'd been blessed with a better British summer.

I emptied the whole contents of my wardrobe and then sorted into: -
(a) will keep
(b) charity
(c) no good for anyone - bin it
(d) too small...need to lose weight!

The "will keep" pile was then sorted into colours for the top, blacks for the bottom, dresses in one wardrobe and work (or Rainbow) clothes in the other with separate sections for accessories.

Before I could change my mind I bagged up "charity" and took to the local supermarket re-cycle bins and binned the old clothing (most of these were heavily worn whilst decorating so no good to anyone).

As for the "too small..." piles I've wrapped these up in pretty wrapping paper and gave myself a goal weight to lose before I can open. "must lose 4lb", "must lose 7lb". If, by 1 June 2013 I've not managed to open those parcels they will go straight to to the charity re-cycle.

I'm now offering this service to customers who want a clutter free and organised wardrobe. My days are so less stressful now that I know where to find things and more importantly what I have!

The Feminine Touch

2012-06-09T10:04:00.000+02:00

My customers keep telling me that Rainbow has that all important Unique Selling Point, "USP"! Apparently, they love the fact that I'm a multi-tasking woman doing a whole range of jobs for busy people in the North East.

For me, cleaning, decorating and gardening are part of the up-keep of a home and that is why I believe my customers like having me in their home. I'm not a "contractor" or "builder"...just simply offering a home feel service to people who deserve the best in life without paying a fortune.

When I worked in management, the only quality time I felt I had in my home was at weekends and I always felt that jobs were rushed. I now feel blessed to have the opportunity of sharing my skills.

"Its great having Suzanne in my home; she's so tidy, organised and just gets on with the job in question. I don't feel like I have a "trades person" in my home, rather a friend!"

"Suzanne is very committed to her work and I feel totally at ease when she is around. She is great with children and animals which helps in our house..."

I love the diversity of my business as it allows my personality to shine through and gives me the opportunity of connecting with lots of different people. Because Rainbow offers a good range of services, I like how these intertwine, bringing me more business and offering clients a one-stop shop.

Recently I carried out a full home decoration resulting in the same customer asking me to write a website and blog for her! Another customer employed me to clean her oven, this resulted in a full kitchen Spring clean, in turn resulting in a regular house clean every 3 weeks. This summer, when she goes abroad on holiday she has employed me to live in her home and look after her two gorgeous puppies. I feel very blessed by such requests.

My aim is to offer a great service, at an affordable price and for customers to feel happy with me in their home. With my days never the same, last minute requests to help customers in need, I turn to regular yoga for my solace.

Painting the Tiles

2012-06-01T09:27:00.000+02:00

I recently had a discussion with several people about tile paint and it raised many questions.
Doest it work?
Is it waterproof?
Is it easy to do?
Does it look good?

I carried out some research on the web and got mixed reviews; some said it was great, others said it was awful. I offered my services pro bono to paint the tiles in a small bathroom. Would I do it again? Absolutely NOT! I have never felt so stressed whilst carrying out a project in all my life!!

The end result does look good, and to be fair to the paint manufacturers, it does work BUT if you want my advice, save up and have the area re-tiled. I wouldn't offer this service to paying clients because the stress for me is just far to huge.

If you fancy having a go yourself, here are some tips that I picked up along the way but please bear in mind, this project is not for the faint hearted! : -

(1) The paint is NOT gloss paint, so don't think you can treat it like it is or use it in that way. In fact, I started to think of the paint as 'liquid ceramic'. If you despise gloss painting you will detest using this paint so if I was you; I'd get saving for new tiles.

(2) You must work very quickly and constantly with your brush. My arms and shoulders were in agony by the time I'd finished. Don't stop for a coffee break half way through the job; you must keep going.

(3) The paint pretty much sticks to the tiles INSTANTLY upon application (hence why I say you need to work quickly in (2) above). Have a few brushes on stand by so that you can change when the brush becomes clogged up with paint.

(4) Don't be fooled by the "One Coat" instructions on the tin. That is not true and you will need to do two coats. I found by doing one coat (to cover tiles from cream to white) the paint was too thick and started to run and it is impossible to paint out the runs. Its best to do one thin coat, let it settle for an hour or so then go back and do your thicker coat.

(5) If you do get a run or an imperfection the only way to rectify it is to put some white spirit (or brush cleaner) on a clean cloth and rub the area; re-load your paint brush and re-paint.

(6) Do not make the mistake I made and try to use a roller designed for gloss paint. It just doesn't work.

This bathroom was changed dramatically for around £100 (materials only*). If I'd been charging I would have charged approximately £200.

If you have a few tiles as a splash back in kitchen (for example) it will be fine but I wouldn't recommend it for larger areas such as a full wall in a bathroom.

As for the "waterproof" aspect...surprisingly this does work and the tile (when painted) does look like a tile and not just as if something is painted on the top. How it weathers and how it will clean, I'm not sure yet but will keep you updated over the coming months.

As for my nerves? I'm fine now after a 2 hour yoga session and a good sleep!!

Suzanne

Materials used for this project

White tile paint from Ronseal from B and Q; after one application I realised we needed another but wanted to try something else so bought International Tile Paint from Homebase. I did prefer the International Tile Paint for my second coat but not sure if that was because I was getting used to using the paint or not.

All brushes, white spirit, brush cleaner etc was purchased from B and Q as was the floor tiles and chipboard laid in advance.

....are now covered with fresh white

cream flowered tiles....

walls were given a fresh paint of white emulsion...

...to freshen up the whole area

the motif tiles are now covered

a nice relaxing space...

...with sink splash back to match

Enhancing the Colour

2012-05-26T12:11:00.000+02:00

With a little bit of elbow grease, the use of my jet washer, coarse sandpaper and Ronseal English Oak wood stain this dull patio and its furniture have been transformed bringing colour back to the garden.

garden furniture in need of some attention...

...weather beaten from rain and cold

after a jet wash, sand and some TLC...

...we are sure you will agree the colour is lovely and natural

grey and dull...

...the process mid-way

to clean and pink...

...what a difference in only a few hours

The completed patio...colourful and ready for summer

Olympic Support

2012-05-22T00:40:00.000+02:00

In April 2012 I saw an advert asking for volunteers to support others in the smooth running of the football matches that would take place in July 2012.

I was so happy on 15 May to be told that I had been accepted as an Olympic Ambassador and will carry out official training on 28 and 29 June 2012.

The shifts I will be cover are: -

Thursday 26 July 215pm to 845pm = 6 hours
Sunday 29 July 2pm to 830pm = 6 hours
Friday 3 August 2pm to 830pm = 6 hours
Total = 18 hours

If you would like to sponser me for the time I will spend I would like to donate any money raised to the charity, Born To Be Beautiful. Please contact me and I will send you further information on how you can donate.

Whilst I will receive a voucher for my lunch I will have to pay for my own travel costs on all days I am volunteering (£10 approximately); however I will also donate £1 for each hour I volunteer (£18) towards the charity.

I'm looking forward to being involved in such an exciting time!
