seems like summer just came and went with the blink of an eye right? we LOVE summer more than anything in the whole wide world so its always hard to say goodbye....but every year we end up welcoming fall with open arms thanks to the OVERWHELMING hype of new fall fashion everywhere. With that being said, we've already started packing away sandals and dresses and bringing in the boots and sweaters.

With fall fashion in mind, we decided to start making sweaters. We found some awesome open knit sweater fabric and whipped up a few pieces.
Currently we are LOVING wide and cropped sweaters. They are the perfect addition to any outfit, and they are surprisingly flattering.
We've had a lot of fun working with these open knits...so there will DEFINITELY be more to come.

In other news...

here are a few photos from HARD summer music festival in downtown LA. We were both proudly sporting Rainbows Noir that night. Heidi wore a black open knit cropped sweater layered over a gray burnout backless jersey dress with an extreme hi-low hem. The pictures don't do the dress justice, its a pretty awesome dress... we will post better pictures another time.

Crafty McCrafterson's - DIY project

Soooo we think it's time for a non-fashion related post/ DIY post...since we haven't been doing very many crafty/ home projects lately due to our increasingly busy schedules of making custom clothes for people (we are VERY THANKFUL for each and every one of you!) - and while we "technically" don't really have the time to do home projects, but we decided to make it a point to get this ONE project finished....so we did.

we had been eying these amazing BRIGHT and CHEERFUL credenza's lately that seem to be popping up everywhere either on Apartment Therapy.com, Room Service, Jonathan Adler, or awesome vintage remastered pieces...

We picked up a credenza/cubby shelving unit at a garage sale for a whopping $10....it was totally boring and simple, but we envisioned how easily it could be transformed into something spectacular!

You could say that our taste in interior design is a funky/eclectic/bright/modern - ish....we LOVE LOVE LOVE color for our house (each room in our apartment is a different color, and we prefer our furniture to be brightly colored as well, and everything is mismatched.
We've noticed TONS of Chevron printed interiors recently as well as Chevron printed clothing too...and naturally we are big fans of the colorful zig zag print, so we decided to use it on the credenza.

We decided to do the credenza turquoise (to match our already existing TV cabinet) with the added 'Chevron' flare of course..

To construct the chevron pattern, we cut even strips of cardboard and taped them together in a zig zag pattern.

First, we removed the partical board backing on the credenza because it was just ugly and not useful...

We sanded the credenza lightly, and then painted two coats of turquoise paint - and let dry.

Next, we taped down our chevron pattern along the top of the cabinet.(verrrry carefully, and perfectly measured) god forbid your perfect chevron pattern ends up crooked!!!
With a small paint brush and black acrylic paint, we CAREFULLY painted in the chevron pattern...it took FOREVER (but we are total perfectionists...so it took us extra long...)
we then continued the chevron patten down the sides of the credenza as well,
lastly, we finished some of the trim with black paint to tie the whole piece together.

and, VOILA!!! our DIY chevron credenza a la Rainbows Noir!

Hello friends!

we are BIG fans of the maxi dress/ maxi skirt trend - and most currently, the "midi" length trend as well. These trends have played a key role in a large portion of our designs lately. For us, comfort translates into confidence which easily translates into sexy. That's why we adore the "maxi" and "midi" so much! we cant stop making dresses and skirts in these fantastic lower hemlines! (plus they're totally comfortable and you don't have to worry about accidentally giving anyone a peep show when you get out of the car (a la Brit Spears)

The following photos are from a recent Vegas trip. Nissa and I went against the grain of typical "clubbing" style, and opted for MAXI'S instead! Nissa on the left is wearing a Rainbows Noir - Chantilly lace cropped tube top in black paired with Rainbows Noir - silk chiffon maxi skirt in a burnt orange abstract leopard print.

Heidi is wearing a Rainbows Noir - backless maxi dress with overlay ruffle top, and asymmetrical hem (It's the same dress in our previous post being modeled by Emily)- and we are both wearing Jeffrey Campbell platforms - OF COURSE!!

The following photos were taken at our best friend, Jessie's, wedding rehearsal dinner.

Heidi is wearing a Rainbows Noir - low back, midi / asymmetrical length dress with ultra skinny straps which cross and tie at back - in a black rayon vintage floral fabric. This dress is similar to the black maxi dress which Nissa is wearing in the pictures, in that it has the cropped ruffle overlay as well.

Hey guys! sooo a local blogger, Briana Garcia from Brianaissance.com recently contacted us about doing a "Summer Swimwear" shoot promoting a local bikini shop in Ventura. She was envisioning some of our Rainbows Noir tunics / tops / dresses being used for the shoot....so naturally we were HONORED, & of course we said yes!

Briana is seriously HILARIOUS and was sooo awesome to work with....please enjoy the video below that she posted on her blog featuring designs from local swimsuit designer, Boys + Arrows, at Tiki Girl boutique, featuring RAINBOWS NOIR!!!! Local Photographer, James Scolari also shot still photography.

anywho....we have tons of new pieces that we have been meaning to photograph and post, but have yet to do so...soon, promise. Lots of great things in the works!!!

I (Heidi) just finished sewing a dress for my co-worker. She wanted a black, one shouldered long sleeve body con dress - a la Kim Kardashian...

I constructed the dress using a thick polyester jersey fabric, one shouldered with a long tight sleeve, and hidden elastic ruching down the sides, making it versatile, the length can be almost to your knees - or- you can hike it up to your thighs for a night out. It turned out ADORABLE!

Yay for summer! (...if we ever get nice weather!), nevertheless, yay! for summer time wardrobes! One particular trend we have found ourselves embracing quite frequently this spring/summer has been oversized/crop tops. They are a perfect wardrobe edition for this time of year being that you can pair them with maxi skirts, shorts, and high-wasted bell bottoms without looking like a total sack of potatoes. and keeping the crop top a bit over-sized prevents you from looking like the hoochie mama's you see workin the boulevard downtown.

Anywho, we whipped up this lil crochet/lace number, and are quite pleased with the result. We used a soft cotton black lace/crochet-ish fabric, cut over-sized and cropped with elbow length bell sleeves which are adorned with black crochet trim. enjoy rainbows noir's latest creation :)

We have TONS of new pieces we can't wait to show everyone. Stay tuned!!

Viva Las Vegas!

We are happy to say that we have officially just finished working with our very first (paying) client! Haha. We've made lots of clothes for friends and family in the past, but they have mostly been gifts - so it doesn't count! Haha

Anyways...a friend of ours, Shannon, approached us about making her a dress for her upcoming girls weekend in Vegas. We were thrilled and honored that she asked us, and happy to help! I (Heidi) took on the project. Shannon wasn't sure what she wanted the dress to look like, so she left it up to me to come up with some ideas (we have similar taste, so it was a cinch) I showed her a few different style ideas that I thought would look great, and we took a trip to the Fabric Store - where we found the most amazing "Vegas-y" looking fabric -a sheer black chiffon lurex jacquard with bronze and black metallic zebra print (subtle zebra, not too showy)

I designed and sewed the dress, with one fitting in between, and the dress turned out PERFECT (I kinda wanted to keep it for myself!) We went with a caftan style/ tunic dress with a deep V neckline, deep scooped back, "cold-shoulder" cut out details on sleeves, and the hem was cut short and sexy with a "high-low" hem (a bit longer in the back)

Shannon was really happy with the result, and in turn I was equally as happy!

Here are a few pictures I snapped of myself in Shannon's dress (It's WAYYY too long on me btw. Shannon is much taller than me!)

Soooo, we were strolling the aisles of our favorite store, Michaels the other day!!!, and we came across this awesome little "DIY Indian leather section", and we got a little excited...to say the least. Give us any excuse to make something, let alone something American Indian inspired, and you have us on board 100%

We have been seeing these little Indian medicine pouch necklaces around, and decided to make our own version.

You have probably noticed the abundance of feather earrings out there right now in stores and online. They have been extremely trendy for a while now, and the trend continues into summer and fall. We are personal fans of this style - and since we refuse to spend $218 dollars on a pair of earrings, we decided to have a little DIY project!

What you will need:

Rooster Feathers - We found ours at the local Tackle Shop. People use them for fishing (crazy right?!, who knew!) but you can also order them online. They are hard to find, if you can't find any, you can use pheasant feathers or peacock feathers as well.
Jewelry Pliers - We got ours at our FAVE STORE - MICHAELS!!! click here for jewelry pliers.

Jump rings - Essential to all Jewelry making - click here for jump rings
Finding crimps - look for the crimps with a loop on the end - click here

We decided to make a single earring as opposed to two. because it is a substantial size, it would be too much to wear two at once. It turned out adorable. We suggest cutting the chain in various lengths so your feathers hang at different lengths. It takes time, and your hands will be very sore from clamping, but its worth it. We love them!

No, it's not a new trend, but like all trends that span multiple seasons, Lace is everywhere once again. The Lace influences For Spring 2011 are more to the classic side with quality antique-style fabrics. We have been loving delicate lace and crochet vintage inspired silhouettes.

We've been making a ton of new pieces lately for our spring wardrobes, unfortunately, we haven't had a chance to get pictures of anything else, but we wanted to share this antique lace dress/top with scalloped lace trim on the bell sleeves, boat neck, low scoop back, and high/low hemline. We found this lace at a local fabric store that frequently puts out old vintage scraps of fabric, and we were lucky enough to snatch up this gorgeous lace!

Ready for spring?

The 70's are back in a big way for Spring 2011... Everywhere we look we are seeing a plethora of "free love" and "disco" era themed styles, including bell bottoms, bohemian style blouses, hippie dresses, halter tops, tunics, and of course maxi skirts...

We will gladly admit that we have both fully jumped on this trend bandwagon willingly... (any excuse to wear loose, comfortable, and flowy clothing is more than OK in our book!)

with that being said, we have been busy making some new items for our personal clothing collections. (still working on samples to hopefully sell in the future...promise!)

current obsessions of ours include maxi skirts, silk prints, peasant blouses, poncho's, capes, and all things lace or crochet. Here are some of the pieces we've made recently...

we've gone DIY crazy!! - bedroom dresser edition

Nissa has re-done her room FINALLY after a year of procrastination...better late than never right?

Anywho...part of the "re-do" meant she needed a new dresser - and when we spotted this at Room Service - we died. Nissa HAD TO HAVE IT...

....but the $2,295 price tag....not so practical for a broke ass 27 year old chick living in an apartment.
so, what do we do? DIY project duh!!!

Nissa found a vintage french provincial dresser on Craigslist for 50 bucks...
of course we forgot to take a "before" picture of the dresser, but it looked a lot like this one - but wayyyy crappier - the "off-white" paint was peeling and scratched, and lets face it - it was "off-white" - which in my world, is borrrrringggg.

Next, we picked up a couple cans of black furniture spray paint (semi-gloss) from Lowes, as well as white spray paint for the accents.

Nissa then sanded the dresser lightly, and also removed the accent pieces - which she spray painted white separately.

Then Nissa and our lovely mother and step-father spray painted the sh*t out of that dresser (don't worry, they went outside to do this...caution: major fume-age!!!)

Once it was all dry, Nissa glued the white accent pieces back on, and VOILA!!!!

Allow me to introduce you to The $50 version of the Room Service inspiration dresser!!!

Moral of the story:

DIY - custom dog silhouettes a la Heidi and Nissa

We've been wanting custom silhouettes of our pups for quite sometime now...and after scouring etsy.com for super cute custom dog silhouettes, we were just disappointed with the selection and decided "Hey! we can totally just make our own! So, that's what we did!...

Inspiration silhouette - cute, but kinda plain!

What we did - and/or what you will need to make them:

First we went to Michaels (best store ever!!) and picked up the following:

10x10 black picture frames
plain black 12x12 cardstock (or scrapbooking paper)
a large assortment of 12x12 printed scrapbooking paper to match our home decor
a quality x-acto knife
and a glue stick!

We then took profile photos of our dogs, printed the picture, and then traced their exact silhouette's in sharpie.
Next, we cut the photo silhouette out using the x-acto knife, and then traced the outline only on the black cardstock with pencil.
Then we VERY CAREFULLY cut out the silhouette - ensuring that no mistakes we made!
We then just glued the black silhouette to the fun and colorful paper, and we added silver embossed letter stickers of each dogs initials right below the silhouettes.
Lastly, we cut down each one to fit the 10x10 frame

...and voila! Custom framed silhouettes of my amazing pups!!!!!

All done and hung in Heidi's bedroom!

If any of you know us, you probably are aware of our unhealthy OBSESSION with over-sized shirts. On any given day you can pretty much guarantee one of us will be sporting any of the following:
a kimono, a caftan, an over-sized sweater, an over-sized tee-shirt, a poncho, or anything else large and baggy. (except pants!!) ....and come summer, we will be sporting oversized dresses/ and maxi skirts galore...but for now, we are obsessed with all tops BIG. aaaaaand some pics for some over-sized inspiration....

Were trying to bring some "early spring" into our wardrobes...so this is one of the first spring items we've made this year.... I feel like New Years Eve was like a million years ago already, but I wanted to post some pictures of the dresses Nissa and I made for New Years Eve. So, here I am, a week late...

I (Heidi) made my dress from a sheer gold fabric that has this beautiful gold sequin scalloping detail all over it. I made a shift style dress cut oversized with long bell sleeves, boat-neck, and a low scooped back. It turned out amazing! The result was a vintage bohemian style, and I was thrilled with the result. I paired my dress with opaque black tights, my Black suede Jeffrey Campbell "Mary Roks" wedges , and my earrings were made from two necklaces that I bought from Forever 21, which I just transformed into earrings using a few jewelry tools... and last, but certainly not least, I wore my Step-grandmother's vintage fox stole...(and of course I forgot to take pictures of it)

Nissa made here dress out of a gorgeous black silk fabric adorned with beautiful black beading. She chose an oversized tunic style with a boatneck for her dress. She ended up having to sew most if it BY HAND, because the fabric was so hard to work with on the machine...but she did an AMAZING job, and it was beautiful! She paired her dress with black opaque tights, over the knee black suede boots, vintage Chanel handbag, and black velvet tunic headband (that she made). I can't wait to wear it for another occasion!

As many of you have probably noticed this winter, it seems like EVERYONE (meaning celebs) have been sporting these
furry animal hoods by Spirit Hoods.

Personally, I think they are totes adorab, however the $135 price tag,

not so adorb.

So when my friend Michelle approached me about possibly making a similar hood for her upcoming snowboarding trip to Tahoe, I was more than willing to take on the challenge! We snatched up some shaggy white faux fur at the fabric store along with a super soft blanket/sweatshirt fabric to use for the lining...and I got to sewing. I was super thrilled with the result, it's perfect!!!

Since NYE is right around the corner...Nissa and I have been busy busy busy perfecting our dresses. Mine is a vintage silhouette, reminiscent of the late 60's, with long bell sleeves, boat neck, and low back all on this gorge vintage-y looking gold sequin fabric that I found in Downtown LA. Nissa's is a bit more "Dynasty" inspired (think 1980's Delta Burke, except modern) haha, it's really pretty, I swear! Pics to come.

I finished my BFF Jessie's dress last night, and she was thrilled with the result. The pic is a crappy pic I snapped with my cellphone, and please ignore Jessie's workout clothes underneath! Anyways, we were happy with the finished product we just had to have her model it!
