As of January 2015, you, as a homeowner, are now responsible for your choice, installation and maintenance of your wastewater system under a new code of practice introduced by the Environment Agency. You have a legal responsibility to minimise the impact of your sewage waste if you manage it within the bounds of your property e.g. with a septic tank or sewage treatment plant.

If you have a septic tank that discharges directly to a surface water you will need to replace or upgrade your treatment system by 1 January 2020, or when you sell your property if before this date.

How to follow the rules and protect your local environment

We strongly advise you always get expert, specialist advice when it comes to sewage waste treatment; the effluent has the potential to be both a serious health hazard and pollute the local environment if it is not properly managed. You are also at risk of prosecution if the regulations are not upheld.
Although you no longer need to register a small domestic tank or keep five year maintenance records, your septic tank or sewage treatment plant must still be fit for purpose, comply with industry standard EN 12566, and be properly sized, installed, and maintained by an authorised person.
You are limited to discharging a maximum of 2,000 litres of treated sewage per day into the ground or 5,000 litres of treated sewage per day to flowing water. If you discharge more you will need a permit.

How the BioFicient works

The moving aerated media process used is a compact development of the traditional biological process and provides a more effective and complete means of reducing the loads.

1. Raw sewage gravitates to the unit where it is received in the primary settlement zone. Here, gross solids and other social debris settle to the bottom of the tank where they remain until the tank requires de-sludging. Settled sewage is displaced from primary zone and enters the first of : two sequential moving aerated media reactors.

2. Media and liquid circulation in each zone is achieved through the use of a compressor and diffuser, which introduces fresh air into each compartment. The liquor is constantly re-circulated and contacts the moving media and as it does so, it is purified by the microorganisms (biomass) growing on the surface of the media and within the moving liquor. Excess growth of biomass is shed as solid particles into the liquor.

3. The final settlement tank is where humus solids settle to form sludge. At preset intervals, portions of the sludge and liquor are returned to the primary tank for additional treatment.

4. Final effluent is displaced from the final settlement tank. With regulator approval, it is suitable for discharge to a watercourse or drainage field.

Matrix CLF2 (12pe) treatment plants were chosen by the customer for a 10 plot residential development because they met all of the requirements of the site.

The primary concern was that all the inlet depths were different but C&L Fabrication Ltd are able to manufacture treatment plants to suit required inlet depths to the nearest 5mm, without any penalty on time availability. Of equal importance was the fact that Matrix treatment plants are FULLY certified to BSEN12566-3, including the structural test in groundwater conditions, which few, if any, other manufacturers hold.

Similarly, the customer felt that the ease of installation of the Matrix treatment plant plus the extremely economical ongoing running and maintenance costs would be a long term benefit.

Clenviro Ltd Installation

Holker Estates, owner of a large caravan park in Cumbria, awarded Clenviro Ltd the contract to design, manufacture and supply two Matrix sewage treatment systems to ultimately serve up to 1200 guests.
The systems had to be designed to achieve much lower than normal ammonia levels, to comply with EA permit requirements.

In awarding the contract to Clenviro Ltd, Holker Estates considered not only the capital cost of the systems but also the speed and cost efficiency of the installation in comparison to other systems and the minimal aesthetic impact of the final installation of the Matrix system.

The first system to serve approximately 750 guests has been supplied and installed by a local contractor, with the second system scheduled to be installed later in the year.

Kingspan Klargester have been investing in its commercial range and along with the recent Biodisc BM, are happy to introduce the new BioFicient sewage treatment plant for commercial applications.

In a standard configuration, the Bioficient Commercial will deliver BOD levels of less than 20mg/l, 30mg/l Suspended Solids, and Ammonia levels lower than 5mg/l. This means it will outperform most of the packaged systems currently on the market for nitrogen reduction.

The Bioficient is also a highly adaptable solution that can manage a range of influent and effluent qualities, depending on the situation requirements. The system may be configured to enable treatment to almost any consent level levied by the regulators.

The BioFicient is designed in accordance with BS EN 12255 and ideal for large domestic and commercial applications such as camp sites, hotels or industrial units. It is shipped as a single piece tank up to 300PE with modular systems available for up to 1000 PE.

How Bioficient Commercial Works

Bioficient Commerical delivers superior effluent quality thanks to its three-stage process, featuring an innovative plug flow aerobic process in a fluidised bed arrangement. This operates in conjunction with an advanced system of air diffusers and media to deliver optimum levels of purification.

Bioficient features three phases to ensure efficient operation. The first stage is a settlement phase where the coarse solids are retained for subsequent gradual breakdown. The biological phase removes carbonaceous pollutants by presenting the sewage to micro-organisms in the presence of oxygen. High efficiency air diffusers continually pump oxygen through the biological media and fluidised effluent. The by-product of biological treatment, humus sludge, is re-cycled for further treatment.

If your project is among the 1.5 million homes and properties in the UK that cannot connect to the main sewer, what should you do?

First, the 2010 Building Regulations recommends that a site visit is carried out by a suitably qualified expert before the preferred treatment option is decided upon. Separator Requirements

The determination for use of a fuel and oil separator is based on the specific application of the property and not necessarily on size. Combined guidelines from the Environment Agency of England and Wales, The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service of Northern Ireland specify when fuel and oil separators are required. These are:

Car Parks, for more than 50 vehicles or 800m2.

There are three types of Kingspan Klargester Fuel and Oil Separators for consideration. The second type are Bypass Separators and these manage a flow rate up to 6.5mm/hr and if the flow exceeds this limit, the flow bypasses the separator system. Septic Tank Emptying

It is both necessary and important to have your septic tank or sewage treatment plant emptied annually to ensure proper functioning of the unit, but there are a few factors to bear in mind before having your tank or treatment plant emptied:

Septic tanks and sewage treatment plants should never be completely emptied - there should always be a small amount of sludge left in-situ at the bottom of the tank to ensure bacteria continues to breed in the unit. This guidance applies to both septic tanks and sewage treatment plants.
Once the tank is empty it is a good idea to introduce a bacteria based additive like Bioactive. This ensures a healthy level of continued bacterial activity, which improves the performance of your waste treatment unit and prevents nasty smells from building up inside.
Make sure you use a reputable company to empty your tank (see below). Most damage done to septic tanks or sewage treatment plants happens during emptying by the high pressure hoses that are used in the emptying process.

You may have heard of the name, maybe someone referred to your sewage system as a BioDisc or a Klargester.

Klargester has become a household name to many just like we refer to our vacuum cleaner as a Hoover but just like Hoover Klargester isn’t the only manufacturer that produces the goods there are many others, even so Klargester where the first so lets have a look at its flagship product the BioDisc.

Why is it different?

The Klargester BioDisc is the only sewage treatment plant to use the Rotating Biological Contactor technology, it still uses the three stage treatment method (sludge retention-treatment-setlement) but in the treatment area (2nd stage) stead of using a compressor or small pump to oxygenate the effluent it uses the rotating disks.

Cons

The Biodisc has in the past had a bad reputation for poor reliability but this is mostly been because of householders not maintaining the plant adequately causing main components to breakdown, an other issue can be shoddy installation, if the Biodisc is setup wrong the tank can become prone to break drive belts and bearings can wear out very quickly.

The other problem for some people can be the visual impact of the tank as it has a large lid that can’t be covered over easily as it is the main access hatch to the treatment plant

Pros

Klargester has been manufacturing the BioDisc for decades now the plant has been improved over the years and it isn’t Klargester’s flagship product for nothing, all in it is a well made reliable product yes it needs to be maintained regularly and has a big lid but many contractors will not install anything else, it is one of the most used treatment plants in the UK and Ireland that must stand for something.

Should I buy one?

If you are on a budget the answer would be no as the BioDisc is a premium product with a premium price tag, there are other sewage treatment plants that are much more cost effective and just as reliable, but if you want to tap in to Klargester's years of experience in the sewage industry and have the budget to allow it the Klargester BioDisc is for you.

The all new Conder ASP HDPE (High Density Polyurethane) Sewage Treatment Plant

HDPE or High Density Polyurethane seems to be coming ever more popular as a material used in the construction industry for underground tanks whether they are oil, sewage or water it is becoming the go to material, why?

High Density Polyurethane is a very robust and durable material it has a very high strength to density ratio and is normal a recycled product so there is no wonder Conder is using it in their new ASP HDPE range Sewage Treatment Plant.

So is it any good? Yes it is, the cleaver thing Conder has done is they have built on the success of the ASP range instead of producing a new model with their inherent teething problems, The New ASP is the same as the old model but using HDPE it also has a nice addition of the concealed blower housing inside the neck of the tank instead of having to have a external box.

The New ASP also has two riser options one a telescopic riser that goes from 50mm to 300mm and then a fixed 800mm riser also making the ASP HDPE more versatile for installation than the previous model also.

Sewage pumping stations

Sewage pumping stations, or pump stations, are factory built sewage solutions made from a GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) and polyethylene chamber. These are easy to install and require little maintenance.

Sewage pumping stations are ideal where the main sewer is accessible but is placed at a higher level to, or some distance from, the domestic foul drain – that is to say, where draining your sewage by gravity is not possible. These stations therefore pump the sewage closer towards the sewer.

Some of the applications for which sewage pumping stations can be used include domestic sewage pumping, as pump sets for sewage treatment plants, 24-hour storage chambers and other bespoke systems. When installed after a septic tank, pump stations can also be used to disperse settled effluent in a water tank, pumping it up to an inspection chamber where it can then flow to a draining stage in the usual way.

The number of stations needed often depends on the size of the building. Single pump units are usually sufficient for individual houses, while twin pumping systems are more suitable for multiple dwellings.

Types of Pumping stations

The sewage pumping stations we stock are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 200L for a small dwelling to a 1600L for properties up to 13 people. The Klargester standard 200L pump station can pump a 2m lift to a distance of 450m or a maximum of 6m lift over a distance of 60m, while the Zoeller Mini can achieve up to a 10m lift.

The Klargester pump station comes complete with float switches, a non-return valve and a compression coupling. An A-Pak High Water Alarm System is a helpful accessory for any pumping station, ensuring that sewage does not build up excessively in the event that the pump fails.

Conder HDPE ASP

As the company’s long reigning flagship product, the Conder ASP Sewage Treatment Plant was launched in HDPE material in the summer of last year and has now been further improved to include an integral final effluent discharge pump system.

Eliminating the need for a separate pumping station to be installed downstream of the drainage, the new enhanced product will now allow the installer to overcome common obstacles or whereby site conditions means that gravity discharge would be difficult or - in a lot of cases - impossible.
