The National Weather Service has issued a Tsunami Advisory for Southern California and the entire West coast of the United States. What is a Tsunami Advisory? Per the National Weather Service, a Tsunami Advisory is defined as this:

TSUNAMI ADVISORIES MEAN THAT A TSUNAMI CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG CURRENTS OR WAVES DANGEROUS TO PERSONS IN OR VERY NEAR WATER IS IMMINENT OF EXPECTED. SIGNIFICANT WIDESPREAD INUNDATION IS NOT EXPECTED FOR AREAS IN AN ADVISORY. TSUNAMIS ARE A SERIES OF WAVES POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SEVERAL HOURS AFTER INITIAL ARRIVAL TIME.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH COULD IMPACT THE ADVISORY REGIONS LISTED IN THE HEADLINE. PERSONS IN LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD BE ALERT TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS. EVACUATIONS ARE ONLY ORDERED BY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES. - PERSONS IN TSUNAMI ADVISORY AREAS SHOULD MOVE OUT OF THE WATER... OFF THE BEACH AND OUT OF HARBORS AND MARINAS.

This is an image of Tara, who is the Buddhist goddess of Compassion and Mercy. She is said to hear the cries of beings experiencing misery. Being a regular meditation and yoga practitioner, I resonate greatly with the teachings and philosophy of Buddhism, but do not consider myself a Buddhist. The reason why I chose this image is because it adorns the cover of a book that we have titled : 1,001 Pearls of Buddhist Wisdom. The artwork and images in this book were the only thing that calmed California during his first two hospitalizations. He literally begged to see the pictures in this book the entire he was in the hospital. This tattoo will be in honor of California and his brave battles with severe Asthma, beginning at the age of 18 months old.

If you would like to learn more about California's hospitalizations due to Asthma click on the following links:
First Hospitalization
March 2007 (his second hospitalization ocurred two months after the first in May 2007)

Third Hospitalization
January 2008

Fourth Hospitalization
August 2009

In closing, L.A. Mama denounces the remarks made by Brit Hume on "The O'Reilly Factor" (Fox News) regarding Buddhism. The last thing we need in the world is more religious intolerance based on ignorance.

He who experiences the unity of life sees his own Self in all beings, and all beings in his own Self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye.

Every year during the holiday season, we are bombarded by the newest tech gadgets, the latest, greatest big screen TVs (many of which have been banned in California by the way), more obnoxious lead ridden plastic toys and everything else to distract us from what the holiday season should be about. What is that, you say? LOVE, KINDNESS and COMPASSION. So, I went on a search for gifts that pay it forward. I have compiled some of my favorite choices for conscientious gift giving below (not listed in order of importance):

Giving the "Gift of Life" may lighten the grief of the donor's own family. Many donor families say that knowing other lives have been saved helps them cope with their tragic loss.

As I sit here with my searing sore throat, persistent dry cough and achy, mucus filled head, my thoughts wander ahead to the upcoming holiday season. I have been asked by many if California is going to sit on Santa's lap. The answer is "NO, NO, NO". Oh, I have heard it all, "but that is a part of the magic of Christmas" and "he is going to miss out on a big part of his childhood"...sorry, but I care more about California's health than a photo op. Does Santa Claus get a seasonal flu shot and an H1N1 shot each year? I decided to do a little bit of research into this matter and the answer is "NO". The United States does not have many policies at all regarding Santa Claus and there are no health related policies for Santa Claus. Canada, however, has issued a strong advisory to all Santas to get the swine flu shot, wash hands often, change his gloves every two hours and bring hand sanitizer with him to the mall. Children with flu like symptoms will also be asked to see Santa some other time.

So, the Santas here in the United States will see hundreds of children who, will sneeze, cough and wipe their runny nose all over Santa's sleeves, gloves and beard. Santa will return to the mall day after day wearing the same suit, beard and gloves...unlaundered. For some people that is fine. It isn't fine with me and it shouldn't be fine with any parent who has a child with asthma or any other chronic medical condition. For parents with healthy children, I would advise you to bring your own hand sanitizer with you on your trip to Santa's lap and to make sure your child does not have any flu like symptoms to protect the other children who will visit Santa after him/her. It's no fun to be sick during the holidays for any child and for asthmatic children, being sick often means hospitalization. We know from experience; California has been hospitalized four times and he is only four years old. So be smart and ensure that EVERYONE has a happy holiday!

P.S. My favorite hand sanitizers are Burt's Bees Aloe & Witch Hazel Hand Sanitizer Spray 2 fl oz (59 ml) and EO Products Hand Sanitizer Spray Organic Lavender, Organic Lavender 2 Oz I like these because they smell great, are non-toxic and you can spray surfaces as well as hands with them. They come in handy while shopping and going to restaurants.

Adopt a Turkey for Thanksgiving

We had the privilege of meeting a turkey a few years ago at the Gentle Barn (which was located in Tarzana, CA at the time). He was such a sweet, gentle bird. He followed us around and loved to be petted. Our experience with Tommy (the turkey) mirrors that of Erik Marcus, the author of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating. He noted that, “Turkeys remember your face and they will sit closer to you with each day you revisit. Come back day after day and, before long, a few birds will pick you out as their favorite and they will come running up to you whenever you arrive." To read more interesting facts about turkeys click here --->The Hidden Lives of Turkeys

Tennessee really loved going to the Gentle Barn to hang out with Tommy, who is pictured above. Unfortunately, Tommy is no longer with us (read his life story here), but the Gentle Barn has rescued four more turkeys who can be adopted this Thanksgiving. We are vegetarians, so we never eat turkey, but we thought we would go a step further this year and adopt a turkey for Thanksgiving. If you would like to adopt a turkey this Thanksgiving, there are several organizations who have turkey adoptions this year. The following links will take you straight to the adoption of the turkey of your choice.

If you allow your kids to see the movie 2012 (or if they sneak in without your permission), the five minute excerpt below is just a taste of what they will be absorbing into their impressionable minds while munching on popcorn and twizzlers. The clip below shows the total destruction of Los Angeles. Click on it to watch, but make sure the kids are out of the room because it is ridiculously scary.

In addition to the movie 2012 causing a stir, The History Channel should be renamed "The Hysteria Channel" for airing various programs regarding 2012 being the "end times" and "doomesday" while blatantly misleading their viewers to believe that several cultures and sources have predicted the world will end in 2012. Because the culture of fear has seemed to drown out the voice of reason, I decided to post information for parents on how to talk about all this scary stuff with their kids.

Let's start out with a little background info:
First of all, let me assure you that I know what I am talking about. I have been researching the Mayan calendar for the past 10 years. Am I an expert who has written a book? No, but I have been blessed with impeccable intuition and good, solid common sense. The Mayan calendar is circular as shown in the image above. There is no beginning and no end (did ya get that??? - NO END). The Mayans believed in a series of cycles, therefore they apparently believed (based upon astronomical observations and complex mathematics) that the end of the final cycle will occur on December 21, 2012. This is Winter Solstice; it happens every year. Winter Solstice represents the exact day and time when the days will become longer and the promise of rebirth in the Spring.

What happens when a cycle ends? It starts all over again from the beginning. That is what we can expect from December 21, 2012. A new beginning to a new cycle. A transformation. Some say this will be a cosmic and/or spiritual transformation. The important thing to know is that the Mayans did not leave us any warnings of any kind because they did not see this as the end of the world. As a matter of fact, the Mayans still exist today and they refute the notion that the world will end on December 21, 2012. Read this link to learn more about what the Mayans have to say about 2012---> Mayans Say the World will NOT End in 2012

Here's what to tell your kids:

Age birth to 4
Just tell them that 2012 is a big number.

Age 5 - 8
Tell them that a lot of people think something is going to happen then, but they are wrong. Make sure that your kids know that you are confident about this and assure them that everything will be fine. Tell them that kids will be talking about it more and more as the year approaches, but it is just because it is on TV all the time. Open the door to communication about this subject because they will hear about it from their friends at school eventually.

Age 9 - 13
Tell them that the Mayan calendar is circular and has no end and that 2012 is just the end of a cycle. Make sure that they understand that people are making a big deal about this because of books, movies, TV and stuff they read on the internet. If they ask about catastrophes, tell them that there have always been earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis etc and there might be more because of Global Warming, but even the best Global Warming scientists have not predicted the end of the world. Once again, keep that door to communication open about this subject. Kids have lots of questions and incredible insight that needs to be expressed openly and freely.

Age 14+
Communicate with them as young adults. Don't patronize them or condescend. Show them that you are confident in your beliefs by planning for the future. Ask them to help you plan a New Year's Eve party for the year 2012 or some other event past December 21, 2012. Tell them everything in this post and incorporate the following talking points. Show them the links if they are interested.

1. The Mayans did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012.
As a matter of fact, their hieroglyphs show that the Earth and humanity was still alive and well in the year 3772 as noted in the article mentioned above. Link --->The Mayans Say the World Won't End in 2012

2. Nostradamus did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012.
As a matter of fact, Nostradamus continued to make prophecies about humanity well into the year 4000.
Link --->Nostradamus Made Predictions from the Mid 1500's to the year 4000

3. The Bible did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012.
As a matter of fact, the Bible states that no one knows the precise date and time the world will end, not even Jesus. Mathew 24:35-36 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone."

4. The Hopi did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012. Period. Their prediction is vague and ambiguous and gives no dates or years. Link --->The Hopi Prophecy

5. Scientists did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012. They have predicted strong solar flare activity that actually began this year which is not unusual since solar flares go through an 11 year cycle of being "quiet" then becoming "active". Enhanced activity means satellites and even power grids on Earth are at risk of electrical malfunction. While blackouts are a possible scenario, they are hardly the apocalyptic end of the world. Link--->Solar Flares

6. The I Ching did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012. This widely accepted notion was "invented" by two brothers on an acid trip in the 70's. Link --->The Invisible Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching

By the way, California is not going to fall into the ocean, so Maynard James Keenan of the band Tool (I am a HUGE fan by the way and I have seen them three times in concert) will not get his wish in 2012. We won't have to "learn to swim" just yet as suggested in the song Aenima. Links --->Aenima Lyrics (Warning: Explicit) Listen to Aenima (Warning: Explicit)

Keep on keeping on.

Maclaren Strollers Amputate Fingers

People mistakenly believe that if something costs more, it is better and safer. WRONG! Maclaren has proven to us that is a fallacy and has recalled one million strollers sold at Babies R Us and Target since 1999. The problem? Their strollers have a tendency to amputate the fingers of babies and toddlers. It is nice to know that they waited 10 YEARS to announce a recall. The recall affects the following models: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller.

The stroller pictured above is a Maclaren Quest Mod that sells for $245 at Target. Maclaren has put out the statement that consumers can contact Maclaren at 877-688-2326 or visit www.maclaren.us/recall to receive a free repair kit. If I spent $245 on a stroller, I would expect the manufacturer to refund my money or replace my stroller NOT to give me a toll free number to ask for a repair kit so my kids fingers don't get cut off. What is wrong with them???

The truth is that the old gender based stereotypes still exist that girls cook and boys get waited on hand and foot. Wake up world...boys need to learn how to cook and let's throw in housework while we are at it.

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching an episode of John Edward Crossing Over. There was a man lamenting over the passing of his wife. He described her as an "amazing woman". Then he went on to say, she did everything...she cooked and cleaned and made everything perfect. "I miss her so much because now I have to do all of these things by myself and I don't know how I am going to get by." WHAT??? First of all, I was struck by the disbelief that his own fear of having to take care of himself superseded his grief of losing his wife and the mother of his child. Unbelievable.

My boys want to learn to cook. They think it is fun. They love helping me with the more complex recipes and love to cook all by themselves also. Tennessee (age 10) makes his own grilled cheese and cheese quesadillas. He also uses the microwave to make his oatmeal in the morning. He also makes many things that don't require the stove on his own. He serves himself his own cereal, makes PB & J sandwiches and PB & Honey sandwiches. He helps with baking cookies, muffins, cake etc. California (age 4) loves to cook also. He also helps with the more complex recipes and baking.

Now, I am sure that Zyrtec works well for SOME kids, but let me tell you about our experience with Zyrtec. The last time (which makes the 4th time) that California was in the hospital with pneumonia (click here to read about his last hospitalization), he was prescribed Zyrtec to be taken on a daily basis for so so called "allergies".

He was prescribed one teaspoon daily, which I quickly noted was too much for his age and weight, so I gave him 1/2 teaspoon as prescribed on the label of Zyrtec. Everything seemed to be fine. I did notice that he began to have nightmares twice a week. These nightmares started to increase in frequency and severity until he began having them EVERY night; 5 or 6 times a night. He was inconsolable and was unable to wake from his nightmares. They were very aggressive nightmares that seemed to border on hallucinations. During the day, his behavior changed. He was extremely hyper, seemed to be manic at times, angry and aggressive.

All of this seemed to peak after he had been taking Zyrtec for about 5 or 6 weeks. I felt so badly for him. It didn't seem like he was the same child. Then I realized that it was the Zyrtec. I stopped giving it to him and he immediately went from having 5 or 6 nightmares each night to have two or three. He has been off of it for over a week now, and he is sleeping soundly through the night. His behavior has greatly improved during the day as well. He is the sweet little boy that I always knew.

This was written to alert other parents to the side effects of Zyrtec (and maybe other allergy meds also). If your child has been having nightmares, lacks focus, seems hyper or manic, angry, depressed, aggressive etc - please consider that his/her allergy medication might be causing these problems, especially those of you using Zyrtec. It is so incredibly sad to know that Califiornia was suffering through all of these side effects and behaving in ways that he couldn't help for 5 or 6 weeks. I was in tears many nights, but I am glad that I finally figured it out.

Go to askapatient.com to read about the horror thousands of other parents and children have experienced while taking Zyrtec: link ---> Ask A Patient

Raising Cali Boys

<img $r="true" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHE_6cSFLlfPmZVHpViefdeoGaIP2Z-9BXcgqCkktdTlRkQyqscj_xSjReTEeDcEckRaYEVNNaOi1x267TxzSRjHJkiXWlyFOuDiYvOaraZy-ph8w2HcTLE7QxRLA43vyAD5M7PcRbNz6R/s400/DSC02425.JPG" />

Raising boys in California is a multi-faceted journey that requires a clever trick of the hand. When I appear to be "absent" from this blog, I am busy homeschooling, researching and publishing other blogs that directly relate to our California way of life. I also read. I read a lot. I usually read three or four books at a time. I am not sure if this is adult ADD or if this is merely the need to multi-task, since I seem to pile so much on my plate.

The books that I am reading right now are:
These pictures were taken a couple of days ago and reflect the growth of our seeds at day 50. They still have a long way to go, as you can see.

Bush Beans. These beans are supposed to be yellow, so we are waiting for them to change color a bit before harvesting them. The seed packet says that they will be ready to harvest in 60 days, so we're almost there.

Squash. The seed packet says 53 days to harvest. We don't even have gourds growing yet to harvest at 50 days, so we'll wait patiently and see what happens.

Baby Mini Jack Pumpkins. This practice has already been banned in West Hollywood and is on the table to be banned for the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Why the sudden urgency?: Effective January 1st, 2010, Arnold (the Governator) will be signing into law to make it illegal for cities and municipalities within California to ban medical procedures.

Click Here -> WE LOVE CATS for the news story

While we agree that declawing a cat is inhumane, we also can't deny the mistreatment that cats have to endure by certain types of individuals because of their claws is also inhumane. If an owner dumps a cat out on the street because it claws the furniture, then that cat will face dire circumstances. If an owner abuses a cat because it claws the furniture, then that is more of an inhumane living condition than the INDOOR ONLY cat being declawed. Finally, what if an owner euthanizes a cat because of "mis-use" of claws???

The San Francisco Society for Prevention and Cruelty to Animals shares our concerns as well in their statement:
"The San Francisco SPCA does not support efforts to prohibit feline onychectomy. Our mission is to save animals’ lives and we understand that, in some instances, this procedure may be the only way to prevent abandonment, relinquishment, or euthanasia. We are cognizant of the fact that, unlike The SF/SPCA, a number of animal welfare agencies do not have the resources to address behavioral problems in shelter cats and the cat-owning public, thus making euthanasia an unavoidable option. This is an outcome that we always seek to avoid."
link -> SF/SPCA Declaw Ban

Click this link -> Declawing is inhumane
Read why declawing is inhumane. Educate yourself, your family and your friends. Make sure that you (and your family and friends) are ready to become RESPONSIBLE pet owners before deciding to adopt a cat.

We are animal lovers. We don't want animals to suffer. We hope that cats won't endure a more painful existence because of this ban :(

Feed Your Head

With the commencement of school and homeschool for many children across, the U.S., I thought that it would be beneficial to outline the TOP TEN foods that increase brain power, memory and cognition. These foods are just as essential for adults as they are children, so read up and feed your head!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 199px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipiOl43fD5dNqDSfvgq85V-PfCyF55M_qU6DPahV6Od9zogGcVXzlLBZ1kFfwm-BE75q-fwzoWd6d4T-ck783BFIKkkx85D0dXOmMJoM-o6s_XNPS6YD71kR_5GURT4BKgNSHDAlQ7a2Sj/s400/berries.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385471366712216978" /># 1 Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries. They are rich in antioxidants which help to prevent free radical damage to brain cells. Some studies suggest that antioxidants help conditions like Alzheimer's and ADHD.

# 2 Coffee and Tea (YAY for ME!!). Studies have shown that three cups of coffee per day increased memory function. Caffeinated coffee has more effect than decaf. A healthy dose of coffee would be two six ounce cups per day. Tea is great for your brain because of the antioxidants it contains (as noted in #1).

#3 Fish. Fish contains essential fatty acids needed for proper brain function. It is full of DHA and EPA, which have been linked to improvements for conditions like dyslexia, learning and behavior problems and degenerative brain disorders. If you are a vegetarian like we are, you can obtain the same essential fatty acids by using a plant based (algae) DHA/EPA supplement. They taste good too!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 148px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_hcyk16TSGFgOmvZYWOpMWJw9yqFZCgrvJwdj8G8CC2vCfouKhW0RScs_YSjS3RPMg4BasHYNthGPFXNJh-b8HkWA0xEf7cBx-kGLrn9iBDvKfiuUBzUakI1T9QFXL42SUkIEC4oJSS8e/s400/walnuts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385471379650058034" />#4 Nuts. All nuts will help with brain function, but walnuts have the highest amount of Omega - 3 (brain food) and almonds are rich in Vitamin E and Selenium which have neuroprotective qualities. Some studies suggest that almonds help prevent Alzheimer's. Extra almonds for me please.

#5 Omega-3 Eggs. Omega - 3 helps your brain function properly. Hens fed a completely vegetarian diet that is rich in flax seed, that are allowed to roam free and are not given antibiotics and growth hormones produce the best eggs for brain function.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSTOz8X8h4_lo8o4sEh-cpVntyfllUK54UQxZLMHgyZAi99ACI0kFUbbeXFooT_kL_Ad5DkW24UWUpbkwL1fzWk89mgwIf06AQ7Q-IzAPSqiINcjOwiuspmAnQBLK59CQHoIE2Iek8B8aC/s400/flaxseed.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385471369824397474" />#6 Seeds. Flax seed, pumpkin seed and sunflower seed are perfect additions to salads, yogurt, trail mix or just eating by the handful. They are loaded with Omega - 6 fatty acids called GLA.

#7 Spinach. Spinach is rich in vitamin C and folic acid which are excellent nutrients for mood and memory. Frozen spinach is just as potent as fresh spinach.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 260px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWxiIHUhUEcxajONjYOXzcqRAtC-FxG9WF0L3VfcILeRKNfQROToL8N0PTWVKVzwYOi-cW4xsON3UejZQ7x4Kbo7qVLGjVxA_lneDr4MHj9ILr1ExVIq331ZU6-RQusg68uRaEdFKA4vmG/s400/purple+sweet+potatoes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385475275534478962" />#8 Sweet Potato. There is a certain type of sweet potato that has purple flesh that is supposed to be the best for brain function. As a matter of fact, recent studies say that this variety has the capability to repair damage to cognition and/or memory.

#9 Tumeric. This spice is yellow-orange and has been noted to also have properties that actually repair cognitive brain damage. It has been shown to reduce inflammation that is associataed with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. As with many of the other brain foods listed, tumeric and many other spices are loaded with antioxidants, which are not only great for brain function but for the body as a whole.

#10 Whole Grains. Unprocessed whole grains are excellent sources of selenium and all of the B vitamins. B vitamins are necessary for a sharp memory and a longer attention span.

Vegetarian Meal for Kids and Adults

Many people wonder what vegetarian kids eat for dinner. His first attack ocurred at 18 months of age which led to being hospitalized for three days with severe respiratory distress/pneumonia/lung infections.

Below is a picture of him in the hospital at UCLA Santa Monica with pneumonia at 18 months.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLnN8ZVlFW9R40h8_9QraTWJgnguGJdcOQ_-qsZJi5VRPbwic_nuvBL14yjvL7Eatgegwq-Dd-68JSZxGAZcxFG9i8Y1fFlowjhYyzK9g2XV3gxHRnReC-QFtgImQsZOsiLgqT7w74uJ2W/s400/caeden+in+hospital+2007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378069024215708226" />

Since then, he has had numerous attacks which have resulted in three additional hospitalizations with severe respiratory distress/pneumonia/lung infections with the longest hospitalization lasting for 4 days. That's right, he is only 4 years old and has already been hospitalized with pneumonia four times. He has been diagnosed with Moderate to Severe Persistent Uncontrolled Asthma. Sounds scary, doesn't it? Well, it is. In order to explain how severe Asthma can be, I have decided to chronicle his last attack and hospitalization to demonstrate the extreme nature of Moderate to Severe Persistent Uncontrolled Asthma. We hope that we can help others by telling our story.

FYI

According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program, moderate to severe Asthma has the following criteria:

Moderate Persistent. At this level, asthma is starting to interfere more with daily living. Symptoms are cropping up every single day, and you need to use a quick-relief inhaler daily (if you have one). Asthma attacks are occurring at least twice a week and often interfere with activity. They may last for days at a time. You are probably also waking up 1 or more times a week with symptoms. Peak flow rate varies by more than 30 percent.

Severe Persistent. This is the most severe form of asthma and at this level, symptoms are basically continuous. Activity is severely limited and asthma attacks and night symptoms are frequent. Peak flow varies by more than 30 percent.

(Click here to read the four classifications of Asthma, including mild intermittent and mild persistent Asthma)

The Timeline

We were gone on a trip to St. Louis to visit family.

8.26.09
On Wednesday we decided to visit the St. Louis Children's Museum also known as The Magic House. This is a very hands on, experiential museum designed to delight the senses as well as educated children of all ages. We had a wonderful time.

8.28.09
Everything seemed fine until our youngest son woke up at 10 pm Friday night
with a severe sore thoat which kept him awake all night.

8.29.09
The next day on Saturday, he said his throat felt better, but began to have a runny nose. I gave him an Albutertal treatment at 8pm Saturday night as a precaution. (Albuteral has been prescribed as needed when he appears to have contracted a virus that might trigger an asthma attack). Around midnight Saturday night, he began to cough. I gave him a treatment at midnight.

8.30.09
He needed another at 3am, 6am, 8am and then again at 9am on Sunday morning. This is when I paged his doctor in L.A. and made preparations to take him to the emergency room. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalized for two days.

Here is a picture of him struggling to breathe while on oxygen and IV antibiotics:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFc2nCBd6OVaqJLR9cAHtFoBQVBEyN4LW9u25ALW56owhuSEHKqGFLwzXY4slZCUyJaKEu9tq-TB0JweVwNeLIZjJp6bZIg-nse3QY43PLvAHfoxOTWdnyazgFWuj0P-1ED-raa8xx7Bx_/s400/DSC02236.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378178611799948658" />

So, as you can see, he went from being perfectly healthy with no symptoms of a virus or asthma to fighting for his life in a matter of hours. After back to back Albuteral treatments in the ER didn't help, he was admitted to the hospital where he was placed on oxygen, received Albutertal treatments every two hours, had two different types of antibiotics administered through an IV and recieved oral doses of Prednisone. He also recieved Qvar via inhaler. His oxygen saturation hovered at 88 for the first 24 hours (dipping down to 86 on several occasions) then slowly inched it's way up to 93 the day that he was released.

To learn more about Asthma, Asthma medications, Asthma triggers, Asthma Action Plans, Treatment and to understand what an Asthma attack feels like, go to FamilyDoctor.org to see videos and to print an Asthma Action Plan. Believe it or not, these wildfires affect the entire Los Angeles area. People (especially children) with Asthma (and other lung conditions) are severely affected by the smoke in the air that seems to seep into everyone's homes through the vents and cracks under the doors...miles and miles away from the fires themselves. There is an ominous sky looming above the entire L.A. area that seems to create a sense of impending doom.

Zero Visibility: A pic taken by a friend of mine today (8.29.09) as she was flying back home to L.A.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxalC0aSur_O7Fo-Npn4C2Z12C2AdMc-qfxp0N8byT9-rTHDERi2qgtc09uYr76QX72ejgbwW7qg-ALRzPzMk0gKLYGPVp5rAei4biWK40Lh3pyiHxQXaGNHtp5Jl0K5zm0Q_gcXsybctB/s400/lafires2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375550800067119266" /> (photo taken by Amanda Moore)

We love you, L.A.

Click here to see a slideshow of images of the Los Angeles wildfires.

Click here to see up to date hourly air quality readings for the Los Angeles area.

Click here to see a map of where the fires are located.

How to Fly Painlessly with Children

As mentioned in our "Who Are We Anyway?" section, L.A. Mama and Daddio are from Missouri. We have embarked on our journey to Missouri to visit L.A. Mama's family and Daddio's family. Let's start with the plane trip to Missouri. The first couple of times that we flew with two children, it was a bit chaotic and somewhat distressing. This time around, it was a breeze! Here are my TOP TEN tips for flying painlessly with children.

#1 Encourage the whole family to wear slip-on shoes or flip flips so that going through security it is quick and easy. Also, tell little ones beforehand that they will need to take their shoes off. Kids get very upset when they have to take their shoes off without warning...

#2. Be ready to put all laptops, cellphones, keys, watches, shoes into a bin to pass through security.

#3 HERE is a BIGGIE: Get your baby/toddler out of their stroller, fold it up and put it through security as soon as you can. If it goes through first, then your little guy or girl is right back in it and ready to get his/her shoes on.

#4 Bring snacks, but no liquids. They will not let you take liquids on the plane. You can buy them after you get through security.

#5 Bring lovies like their favorite blanket and stuffed animal (see California with his giraffe below).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHzF2K2IIVpSRaer77f1qvaMl-ky-BbcQo9Z8XS8UhqstSQBzvpCUptdJECcjMdE_PV30-EMWLXBBCe6DLjBvHjbjnUFkLSKHXjS3Nf6attSWk0nmaywGg623LW2offe99yDbrnTSBrCni/s400/DSC01841.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373337873306883170" />

#6 Load up your iPhone/iTouch will cool apps (see below), bring art supplies, books and favorite toys aboard the plane in your carry-on luggage.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXGa5LXMDP1uBIKZ90hKILoajMPRrsgSrDecjR9uJjfsb-eC3gc9FoA0z5DCDoHXp2q553cAa9s1m9ubFDVHlfKeSzwvXcaaZ08ApJ3QN3h-Ng8ZUh5C8Ago5h6RpcdD-depdqahyN25f/s400/DSC01842.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373337881902630706" />

#7 If your baby/toddler/preschooler still uses a carseat in the car, bring it on the plane! It will keep them from fidgeting, getting out of their seat and they will be more comfortable and more likely to take a nap and chill out as shown below. It helps out tremendously to schedule the flight during his/her normal naptime as well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ymHl54fDbORvJJfPOGRECqOAsm-raBunM32KGB69IH7XroI6w0fygZjBKodcI8MmyUOhpH5hyphenhyphenkWX720YENjfiqioWSKqjCmZp_eq5vJgk6B0DZ6PW7gT_IIfMVTh5DQON_OlTbfyNnoL/s400/DSC01843.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373337886648186338" />

#8 Bring your credit card. As of June 1st, American Airlines stopped taking cash for meals, snacks, beverages and headphones. I gave them my debit card with a Visa logo and it worked just fine. Buy a cookie for your little one and tell him/her that she can have it when the plane starts to descend if he/she makes good decisions (of course, you need to outline what these good decisions are).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio4e7J8ag43XNmrT9Y76I8I5FnhMtlhAMDOCsCK2ItCe0iJ8O8YmGwjkeZVHSzmogrPdqCTqGraaICQd9duYT_xf5OyWFJ1CeqpnYQsTIvLrhgarcrlhzlMQNQbkDV-FVsZUWwl5NtIDoE/s400/DSC01845.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373337896116387426" />

#9 Expect the unexpected. Pack an extra change of clothing (especially underwear and pants) in your carry-on. Pack baby wipes and antibacterial wipes even if you don't have babies.

#10 Try to get seats in the back of the plane close to the bathrooms OR near the wing. Why? a)If your kids do get loud or upset, they will be muffled by the noise of the engines, so you don't have to worry about bothering everyone on the plane. b)Being close to the bathroom cuts down on long walks down the aisle of the plane when they have to go really bad c) If you sit near the wing, it gives children a better perspective of how they are traveling, of the Earth and its landforms and of the sky and clouds - which makes for great conversations.

That's it! I would love to hear more tips from other traveling families out there...please leave a comment!

Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping

California turned FOUR yesterday, so we had a party for him at our house. There was literally so much paper that I could not see the living room floor (see pic below).

We decided to use this paper as gift wrapping instead of buying wrapping paper that is made from newly chopped down trees. It is very difficult to find recycled wrapping paper, but why buy it when you can recycle your own! We wrapped his gifts, then we all added our own personal art as decorations (see pic below).

Other eco-friendly party ideas that we included were:

Using California's previous drawings as decorations on the walls.
Using his newborn picture as a centerpiece on the table.
Using organic ingredients to make his cake.
Recycling and/or reusing any and all packing materials leftover from the party.

*We thought by using his own drawings and his newborn picture AND adding our own personal touches to his gifts, that this party was a true celebration of HIM and his beautiful soul.

Seedlings

The squash, pumpkin and bean seeds that we planted on 8.11.09 (read about it HERE) peeked out of the soil FIVE days after planting. Our adventures have continued on as we stumbled upon Topanga State Park this past weekend. We were greeted by a very warm park ranger, with long braids and an infectious smile. She was such a beautiful soul that I wanted to snap her picture, but didn't out respect for her privacy.

As we entered the parking lot, we were dismayed to see a sign that read "Save Topanga State Park". To learn more about why Topanga State Park and at least a hundred other California state parks will be closed soon...
Click here >>> SAVE TOPANGA STATE PARK
Click here to send a letter to Arnold>>>>ENVIRONMENT CALIFORNIA

Read on to find out what a truly spectacular place Topanga State Park is and why it should stay open to the public.

Just look at these trails! We maintained our distance and stayed very quiet. They didn't seem to be afaid of humans because there were hikers coming back down the trail the opposite way. It was almost as if the deer came down to say hello.

We were able to get close enough to all of them and take this picture of one sweet deer looking straight at us. I have discovered that the Lotus Focus activity that is included with Wii Fit does an excellent job of teaching two essential skills of meditation: focused thoughts and stillness of body.

Tennessee likes to do the Lotus Focus to make his mind and body relaxed and still before bedtime. The goal of Lotus Focus is to ensure that the flame of the candle does not flicker. (see photo below)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrhVJ0XmnbFNRq_Ku3X2rxt0EFr9rRsX17QRiumz_gYVaI1FlBH-Dh6YHp0AqwFVttX57tZ65brMyeCwzpZgelaUuPFOYDU5nFPxEM5i-VbRDH9iNKhfjm5FJk6jOl_zjZRy1m4fiXk1CE/s400/DSC01350.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370306114652919618" />

Wii Fit Lotus Focus gives suggestions as a guide to better focused thoughts and energy. For instance, as shown in the photo below, Lotus Focus explains that "a lack of focus will cause the fire to shake. Try to keep your body still." Keeping your body still isn't as easy as it sounds. It requires a focused mind and focused breathing.

If you want to teach your children (or yourself) how to meditate, I highly recommend Lotus Focus.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSuzvOf0yyMZBb_0lRNskc3NNWbRZqDgQgBM2XT6lPHulsGQK0_TSmp9E3MXh0yhI2wzA0mOvoKdoR7ZQ0Cqbhp6HdQPfCnWkk43VDk-KSGgUqGy6yZBSWWvLeVT6KAAVGHhSFXClUW12V/s400/DSC01355.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370306104939429538" />
