Based on my previous experiences going from a 10yr to a 12yr malt from the same distillery does make a difference but nothing truly remarkable. That's unlike the switch from these ages to an 18yr malt, where you really appreciate the extra years and enhanced flavours. After opening the Yamazaki 12yr, I've had to revisit those preconceptions.

I've had the 10yr edition in my possession for sometime now and its a reliable single malt, reminicent of Speyside offerings with a ripe freshness and vanilla notes. Add two years on and there's an explosion of flavour that was previously lacking. A hint of smokiness comes through without overpowering the balance of the malt and the spicy zing.

Based on this the 18yr is now a must buy. In the meantime, other malts are going to struggle for my attention.

So Balblair have announce a new vintage to replace the 2000 release. Well, its 2001 and apparently marks some changes for this excellent distillery...

Now bottled at 46% it is non chill filtered. All subsequent Vintage releases will be bottled at at this strength or above

New packaging retains the distinctive and brightly coloured box but it has been slightly reduced in width so it is more convenient to carry and uses less packaging materials

The label has been redesigned and moved to a higher position on the bottle for better legibility

I'm still enjoying the 1997 vintage so this has already onto my 'must buy' list for the New Year.

I've been watching some of the eBay auctions this week for the Glenbridge. For an edition of 3000 bottles an alarming rate have been turning up for auction. I guess that's just a reflection of society these days and everyone in the hunt for a quick, and ultimately easy profit.

I do find it amusing such seller comments as;

'a beautiful presentation box', well lets put that myth into touch. The Glenbridge bottle is where most of the money has gone but the actual box is little more than cheaply coloured cardboard. It is very flimsy and the cheap canvas within means that this is cheapest packaging of any 40 year old malt I've seen. Just go into any whisky shop to see how wonderful similarly aged editions are presented. If you do bid then don't expect a wow factor from the packaging.

'will only rise in value', of this I'm not sure. Reviews have been good and I'd hope a few have been opened already. Unless the distillery behind the malt comes to light (which will probably never happen), then this false Glenbridge bottling will be an oddity.

I have been meaning to get around to the Tomatin malts but the festive season is in full flight and most pubs I've been over the last couple weeks, stock the Highland Park 18yr old. So a break is needed until next weekend when I may check the three main releases.

Today was the release of a very special malt throughout the Aldi UK stores. Somehow the German supermarket chain had gotten ahold of a few casks of 40 year old malt and bottled these under the invisible 'Glenbridge' badge. A one off limited run of 3000 bottles, which equates to about 6 bottles per store. Needless to say demand was huge and it will have sold out instantly.

These were limited to 1 per customer and no staff were allowed to purchase the whisky. Unlike the recent 24yr release Aldi did a fortnight ago, this 40yr has been generally well received and much speculation online as to which distillery is responsible. I was fortunate enough to be staying near a branch and having arrived at 0730 secured the third bottle from the store. It was good to speak with the others who managed to purchase this release and they all seemed to be doing it for the right reasons - rather than those money grabbers who have now put up their bottles on eBay for circa £300. Aldi to its credit actually had letters of apology for those who didn't managed to acquire a bottle, which included a £5 off money voucher for their next shop this week.

As 40yr malts can range from £300-£500 or even more, it is a remarkable price at just £49.99. I doubt whether we'll see it's like again! I've quoted the information below;

'This single Highland Malt comes from one of Scotland's Premier Distilleries. Glenbridge has been matured in European Oak Sherry casks resulting in a very intense & rich flavour

Tasting Notes
Colour; Mahogany
Aroma; Antique leather, dark chocolate & dried figs
Taste; Sweet with a marmalade oak zestiness followed by toffee apple fruitiness
Finish; Dry oak tannins fade into a lingering sweet & mellow finish.'

So an ideal location and well hidden, just a short stone throw from the main motorway.

Despite being a massive distillery, with an almost military styled assortment of huge warehouses on the approach road. Tomatin is not one readily available or recognisable to most Scottish consumers. I guess that's mostly due to its produce going towards the export market, or into blends. However things do seem to be changing.

Sadly when we arrived the facility was not in production so we decided against the £3 tour and watched a short DVD in the seating area and had a taste of the 12 year old malt. Surprisingly the dram and video viewing were free; marvellous tonic and an interesting short video. So I will head back sometime to fully experience the tour itself, to comment on it here would be wrong. A warm welcome at the Visitor Centre and a huge range of their malts, the special blends and those lovely limited editions (a 40 year old for £500) are all available to purchase.

It is the sheer size that is impressive. Whereas the Oban Distillery, a whole town has grown around the distillery site, in Tomatin you're very much out in the wilds. Within the complex are many workers cottages for the employees who still work at the distillery; many going back generations. The actual 12 year malt itself was a real surprise and begs the question why it isn't more readily available.

I'll post some thoughts on the 3 main malts when I have the opportunity to sit down with these later this month. I'm looking forward to it based on the brief sample. As always the distillery photos are available for viewing right here.

For example the standard 15yr Dalwhinnie malt for an incredible £20. Sadly this was all sold out on my recent visit (another time perhaps?) so instead I picked up this beauty...

At £21 this drinkable Old Pulteney becomes even more welcome. Especially when you consider this distillery is the recipient of the whisky of the year award from Jim Murray for its 21 year incarnation. Like Highland Park (the 12yr discounted by 20%) you cannot really go wrong with this distillery. Too often its placed into the same category of the 'breakfast malt' Glenkinchie due to its lightness. I actually prefer to suggest if you're starting out tasting whisky, this might be a good introduction to a single malt. At these prices I'll take two please!

There is a brief foray into Sutherland pending later this week. I did consider visiting Glenmorangie, where I've been several times but never taken the tour! Instead I never manage to get past the shop, having made some worthwhile purchases and even poured my own bottle and entered the details into the book. The cloth sack and the cask strength spirit made for a memorable occasion.

I'm fortunate in that I can visit Glenmorangie almost at will. So we'll put that on the back burner and instead I'll pick another just off the A9 as you head north. The Dalwhinnie distillery is very picturesque but my target is another further north and just off the accident-prone motorway. Yes, Tomatin is next up if everything goes to plan.

Regulars will also notice the new template for the blog which gives you the power to decide which view suits your own preferences. I do like the overall feel and integration of photos, it also marks my renewed dedication to putting more mutterings online in 2012.

Whether its simply what to enjoy come the cold evenings, or gifts for relatives or that wee treat you deserve yourself. All annual things to consider.

I've also got the opportunity to sample the infamous 'Black Bowmore' as I'll be in the Whiski Bar in Edinburgh for a evening in December. This isn't a malt they keep on the shelf within their spectacular range. No, you have to order in advance so it'll be unleashed from the safe for you to enjoy. At £140 for a 25ml nip, it's a decision I will have to make shortly. While part of me really wants to experience this unique vintage, I know for the same price I could purchase an 18 year Yamazaki malt and still have enough left for a Clynelish or Highland Park.

My feels are one of compromise and sampling a rare Balblair in the bar, safe in knowledge I can pick up that Yamazaki. It'll still be a great night out nevertheless.

Plans are being made for an earlier 2012 jaunt up to Aberdeen and Morayshire for just a quick few days relaxation. Of course 'relaxation' translates as Distillery visits and there are so many possibilities within such a small geographical area. I'm sure it'll be the first of a couple visits up north in 2012 so expect a few photographs for those overseas who are unable to visit these sites as easily as I can.

So apologies to the regulars at the bar!

With close family ties to Sutherland and the area of Rosehall it came as a surprise when M was reading the excellent book ‘CocoChanel: The Legend & the Life’ to discover her associations with the area. Her grannie may have even served her at some stage during her time in Sutherland. However I’m digressing from the topic at hand; Rosehall House.

The next time we were up north a plan was hatched to find the house and a voyage of discovery commenced. There are a few ways into the grounds of this once grand house, owned by the Duke of Westminster at one stage. On our field trip we probably took the most overgrown by accident! Hence some of the shots in the Rosehall folder as the once picturesque wash house is reclaimed by nature.

Much has been written about this house, its importance, the designs and fears about its renovation since being sold. When we visited (September 2011) the house was unfortunately locked with no work evident. Hopefully from the photographs you can appreciate how grand and spectacular it must have once looked.

We did manage to take some photographs of the contents in the main rooms through the windows. So enjoy and hopefully one day this house will be restored to its once grand status.

Perhaps assisted when the heavens open and it rains heavily; forcing everyone into indoor activities!

The drive itself takes you through some memorable countryside to the distillery by the edge of Colbost. For this reason I'd recommend actually phoning ahead and booking your place, as it only takes one coach load to fill up a couple of tours. Even if they are every 30 minutes you can still find yourself having to wait a while. And in such a remote location there's only the distillery shop or the scenery; neither a bad shout in my opinion but not for everyone.

Actually, if you find yourself with a few moments to spare then walk down past the warehouse and towards Loch Harport. Along this path you'll see an old pier/slipway. This is where the whisky was originally loaded to be shipped off the island. Of course its all changed nowadays even in this most traditional of professions.

This is the original site of the Talisker Distillery, but the facility has been rebuilt after a fire in 1960, including the stills. So don't expect to take any pictures on the tour, as history shows what can happen on occasion and the devastating effects! Sadly the tour no longer allows us to go outside and see the 'worm' pipes in the huge outdoor vats. It seems to be a health & safety issue and a real shame in my opinion that it wasn't included. At least we can see one of the warehouses and some casks from 1979, which apparently are being kept for a special bottling to be revealed sometime... There are 14 warehouses in total on the Isle of Skye before the casks are shipped to Leven in Fife for bottling.

Whatever time you have to wait for the tour, its more than worth it. This is partially due to our guide today who has an infectious enthusiasm for whisky (also doing the blind tasting) and using everyday examples to describe the process. For anyone new to whisky or with no interest; this is the tour to experience. We've been on a few and sometimes many of the phrases and situations become typecast but not here. For instance the Talisker Distillery uses the yeast process to its natural completion i.e. when the yeast dies unlike other Distilleries. This wasn't something fully explained at other facilities and very interesting.

One thing that is different about the tour is the dram comes first. So allow a few minutes beforehand to check out the 'goods' as it were. The tour doesn't play too much on the flavours; Talisker is smoky after all but I did enjoy the 10 year malt edition here and will try the '57 degrees North' edition sometime soon.

I'll actually blame the brother-in-law for my distaste of Talisker until now, I'm not sure what bottle he had, whether it was a Distillers or extra special smoky version, or even a bootleg! I dunno, it certainly wasn't representative of the warm, peppery and candid 10 year old malt that I left with. Disappointingly, my preferred 18 year edition had sold out, next time perhaps.

As ever you can view more pictures here. There will be more whisky tours when I can get around to them; the islands and Morayshire are calling out to me, as is Balblair.

The Oban Distillery is very unusual in the fact that it is in the heart of the town. Namely a stones throw away from the harbour and water that some say gives it a salty taste. The original distillery was built on the same grounds before the town itself and whisky being firmly based on traditions, its no surprise that it remains despite the confines of its location.

This is one of the smaller distilleries due to its urban environment but the tour is one of the most entertaining. The same props are on show as seen in previous Classic Malts tours but there's more emphasis on the product itself. No photographs are allowed on this tour but there's little actually to see if you've been on other tours; unlike Dalwhinnie or Clynelish its not a picturesque setting although the huge cliffs behind the distillery loom large.

Things up a gear when we enter the old casking area. The cool temperature is livened up when we're invited to sample a cask aged 11 years, which by Oban standards is a teenager. Normally their single malt is 14 years so this was a great opportunity to savour a younger more robust offspring with the added kick of cask strength. At the end of the tour the standard bottling is available to sample and compare. An added bonus is the Glencairn glass is yours to keep from the initial tasting and packaging is handed out. Having bought these myself previously elsewhere the fact you're receiving two drams, a free glass and a tour just for £7 is impressive. Or if you go armed with the Classic Malts book; the tour is free as well and the tour ticket includes a discount on any 70cl bottle purchase.

What about the whisky? Well Oban plays on its citrus orange taste and the salty impression. It's a very drinkable malt, probably more reminiscent of a Speyside and being sandwiched inbetween the smoky peat whiskies of the isles a surprise in this respect. The shop is well stocked with other representatives of the Classic Malt and the exclusive bottles including one I almost picked up with a limited run and no further releases. This for £65 offers the chance to experience what they claim is a malt closer to the original Oban heritage and is possibly something extra special.

What photographs I did take on the tour are available here

One of those vinyl rarities that will never appear on a rummage; in fact I've never tried looking for it.

The band in question is The Next with their debut single on Sharp Records from Texas. Each song is a killer track and printed in tiny amounts during 1979 a real gem. Generally I'm a big fan of Texas punk and the Killed By Death era, but not of the £££££ it generates. I do have one or two rarities myself but simply because I enjoy the music. That's what struck me about the recent Record Store Day across the UK earlier this year. People queuing at the crack of dawn to put the items onto eBay within hours. That's not the purpose of the event.

Awake watching a live F1 qualifying from the other side of the world it did cross my mind to jump into the car and head into Edinburgh early. Apart from Bad Brains 7" there wasn't anything that captured my imagination and even then, I already have the song.

Reverting back to The Next, very little information about this band who went in another direction for their 2nd single. For all the great singles released in Texas during this productive era their debut takes some beating. One of the songs featured on 'Bloodstains Across Texas' which you can kindly here via the modern delights of YouTube. Just don't expect any visual action...
In this age of technology and everything just a few clicks away, I'm actually finding it harder to discover new artists and inspirational songs/albums.

Last night I listened to Babes in Toyland for the first time in probably a decade. It was stunning. Even after all these years, their output is unsurpassed with its velocity and passion.

Just searching online now I find an interesting piece from music journalist Everett True who shares my opinion. Having the honour of seeing the band a couple of times during their UK tours it was a unique experience everytime. So check 'em out, most of their output including the peel sessions is essential stuff.

However time for some ramblings!

Edinburgh International Film Festival

I thought this year was going to be a year of transition after the excess (and disappointing) festivals of previous years. We've heard much about a new identity and getting the festival to stand out from the usual occupants. So the release of the brochure last week did come as a real surprise.

Regulars over at HopeLies and my Eastern Premise will know what sort of films I enjoy. Looking through the attractive festival programme (complete with typos) failed to provoke much interest. I'd still like to check out a couple of films when I'm able, but there's very little for me to discover.

I'm already looking head to 2012 when I hope the transition becomes more apparent and enticing. We'll see. I still have my doubts about moving away from the traditional August slot. Speaking of which tickets are already appearing online for the Fringe...

Edinburgh Fringe 2011

Already snapped up some 'interesting' shows including Paul Daniels of all things. The Udderbelly again is relying on a mix of the celebrity and American. Ok, the human beatbox from Police Academy will stoke up much interest. Spiegeltent is starting to reveal its wares and the Fringe brochure arrives very soon. We'll be blitzing the long preview weekend and then avoiding Edinburgh!

September we have a trip up North with several distilleries in mind, so really looking forward to that and picking up a few bottles...

Its been far too long on this blog. I guess the Twitter bug has bitten and I do the weekly thing over at hopelies.com with the Eastern Premise article.

I've tried to scale down things and enjoy what you actually have. I'm sure with the festival on the horizon there will be time for updates and I'll be over in Skye later this year and Oban for a few distilleries.

When I reflect on the last twelve months no film surprised and entertained like Sion Sono’s four-hour epic Love Exposure. Cut down from an original edit of six hours, this theatrical release is spread over two DVD’s with an hour long ‘making of’, which is the perfect tonic after experiencing the main attraction.

The ‘what the’ effect is very strong with this film; I could attempt to briefly mention the need to sin, the attraction of a cult or becoming a master of panty guerrilla photography. I’ve probably lost you around now, needless to say it’s a wonderful Japanese experience, one that only its melting pot of genres and styles could produce.

I though I’d never say this but I do want to see the six hour version if it does exist. Too many filmmakers would have split the film into a two part or more series, but not Sono who is already on my radar as one director to watch from now on.

Breathless on paper represents 'the double' in essence as I would also recommend it as the DVD release of 2010 as well. However as a supporter on a minor club I firmly believe in sharing out the silverware.

South Korean cinema consistently punches above its weight and Breathless is the remarkable debut from director Yang Ik-june who also produced, wrote and starred in the film. A winner of many international awards it received a very limited UK release before arriving in retail thanks to Terracotta Distribution. Similarities exist with Tokyo Sonata, my film of 2009 in respect of a twisted family dynamic and the pressures to exist in our modern 'consumer is king' landscape. What happens to those who fall between the cracks? The relationships and families that erode under such demands?

At the core of Breathless is a tale of emotion and unlikely friendship between a school girl and local gangster, the latter played by Ik-june. His own performance is startling and truly tragic yet most plaudits go to Kim Kkobbi as Yoon-hee. It's a remarkable feat and I'd hope an actress to watch out for in the future; apparently she's been busy since Breathless and its no wonder why. These two leads combine to deliver a knock one-two in my film of 2010.

It's worth noting that the DVD release is well worth acquiring. Despite my preference for Blu Ray, Terracotta put together a two disc 'collectors' edition with a run of just 2000 copies I believe. The bonus disc includes interviews, behind the scenes at Rotterdam film festival, footage from the Special Korean screening and much more besides. I suppose all of this content could have been squeezed onto a single DVD but at the compression cost of the main feature, which looks terrific on its solo disc.

Perhaps its the instant nature of Twitter that curbs my desires to put pen to paper as it were. Maybe its the shocking weather Scotland has endured this past fortnight and the grind actually having to travel somewhere. Then again, I should stop making excuses!

I've stepped back from writing for Gamestyle, who are always on the lookout for video game writers. This was a decision I've been mulling over for a while now and was set to reveal in the New Year. After eleven years I was still feeling the burden of doing too much and I frankly don't enjoy games as much as I used to. Playing for pleasure is one thing, a polar opposite to playing to review. The run of Dr Who, Harry Potter and other 2010 releases confirmed my dwindling appreciate for gaming. Professional till the end it was my GT5 review and the barrage of criticism from the 'fanboy' element that confirmed I didn't really need this any more in my life. For that I thank them, however I'll still be making sure the site ticks over back in HQ rather than the trenches.

In saying that I do have some games stuck in the post (weather playing havoc) that will keep me involved for a few weeks more. I wish I could say with certainty that 'I'm done for good', yet I'll probably do the odd preview if something takes my interest. Time to step aside and let new talent take the site forward. Hopefully I'll rediscover my love of gaming and balance this much better with my life demands when I do.

I've been going back to my other love which is film, and catching up on releases mostly via Blu Ray. It's amazing what a new TV can do and size does matter sometimes! Plus there are some great releases such as City Girl.

I'll be doing my favourite films of 2010 before the end of this year. I'll just pick out a couple, whether its theatrical, blu ray or restorations, I have no set limits.

Until then I shall enjoy this non-freezing evening with a wee dram.

I'd expect more on Wednesday and Friday. Then, here's counting down to the 2011 Fringe.

Henry Rollins Frequent Flyer Tour
Venue: Udderbelly’s Pasture
Time: 2050

Like most American performers, Henry is full of regret about his country and many of his fellow citizens. The former Black Flag front man offers a stage presence that is menacing, yet at the same time captivating and informative. Rather than let politics dominate his show to the extent of say, Jello Biafra, Henry gives us a snapshot into his life and living in California. Tales of travel and his role in Sons of Anarchy pepper a varied melting pot that manages more laughs than most Fringe comedians with an added kick.

Showstopper The Improvised Musical
Venue: Gilded Balloon Debating Hall
Time: 2250

One of many improvised Fringe musicals you can experience this year. No two shows promise to be the same and are guided by suggestions from the audience. This means you could have a night of brilliance or student in-jokes depending on attendees. Tonight we had a tale of prehistoric bounty hunters, killing dinosaurs, tribal love squabbles and 'get your rocks off' to round off the show.

Throw everything into the mix and eventually something will provoke an audience reaction. This scattergun approach resulted in a musical of highs and lows. Good, but I'd still want to see another night just to establish how much improvisation is on display against a repetitive template.

We intend to hammer more shows during the last week of the Festival. I have time off then and it promotes a relaxed atmosphere. No need to worry about an early rise the following morning or what diabolical train service Scotrail is running each evening.

Ok, the final two.

Five Guys Named Moe

Venue: McEwen Hall, Udderbelly

Date: 10-29 August

Time: 1715

Great front row seats, which gave me a real insight into the physical effort and mental concentration that goes into doing a musical. Part of the enjoyment of Moe is that its such a small cast, devoid of elaborate props or costumes. They keep it simple and let the characters and songs do the talking. This is my favourite show of the festival so far. All the cast take to their characters with ease and provide each with the necessary personality. Of course Clarke Peters is the main attraction and he is excellent, but don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a one-man effort; it’s a great team and the live band add another dimension.

Celebrity Autobiography

Venue: Udderbelly’s Pasture

Date:

Time: 1925

Good venue but why on earth does it take so long for punters to stroll in and take a seat. Perhaps they’ve all taken on cow-like personalities given the cow barn outside. It may explain a lot.

This show is all about reading passages from celebrity autobiographies. The team let the outrageous words of celebs (including Stallone, Diana Ross, the Hoff and many more) speak for themselves. Often quoting rival accounts of the same incident from both books to laughable effect. The show seems popular and did hit home with a few attendees but I’m left thinking this should be part of the Book Festival. The two readers are the actors from Cheers and Ugly Betty; I couldn’t help but feel that they themselves could have formed a decent show with their own reflections and anecdotes. This is a waste of their talents.

The Royal Mile yesterday was littered with free performers and many were hugely entertaining. If I’ve learned one thing over the years it’s never judge a show by the ticket price. So, here’s what I’ve managed to check out so far.

Reel to Real: the movies musical

Venue: Pleasance Courtyard

Date: 7-30 August

Time: 1800

A musical, woven around a series of famous songs from MGM and Warner Bros films. Like Mamma Mia the storyline itself is almost forgettable, it’s the songs themselves that take centre stage. Very slick performances evident, even for a preview show it was impressively coordinated. I really enjoyed the use of projection and props that allowed the integration of films and characters not on stage. To get the full benefit try and grab a seat in the middle but even on the sides you can appreciate the work that goes into a production such as this.

Chef!

Venue: Assembly George St

Date: 7-30 August

Time: 1600

Several years ago I had a great time with Jump at the Fringe. Chef! Comes from the same team and involves the same youthful energetic blend of a music, dance, martial arts, humour and this time around beat box. My best show of the fringe so far, for an hour you’re left gasping at the sheer level of effort and imagination that is being shown on stage. Whether it’s the slow motion segment or the kitchen cooking, it’s a tremendous spectacle. Huge plaudits for all the performers and imagination!

Jennifer Coolidge – yours for the night

Venue: Assembly George St

Date: 7-29 August

Time: 2015

Jennifer gives us an insight into her career, which has seen the highs of American Pie and Best in Show. Far from a glitzy representation of Hollywood she lays bare the struggle of an actress and a single woman. Very cutting and nothing held back, those who don’t enjoy colourful language should avoid! An enjoyable hour in the confined Wildman room venue. Jennifer holds your attention throughout and demands obedience. A strong original show with a few laugh out loud moments.

Charlyne Yi – Dances on the Moon

Venue: Assembly George St

Date: 7-30 August

Time: 1900

Charlyne’s brand of comedy isn’t for everyone. I’m at a loss to actually communicate it in words. At times it isn’t what she says, but rather what she doesn’t say which is funny. You are left to fill in the blanks. Her story is centred around being single and recovering from a broken arrangement, assisted by a few unique songs. At times mesmerising and delightful, the show is a rollercoaster. I enjoyed it but a few attendees did not however even they cannot dismiss a unique talent and something new for UK audiences.

The realisation that there is chemistry between Cruise and Diaz should come as no surprise given their previous form in the excellent Vanilla Sky. Whereas that film was firmly anchored by a strong, enticing and challenging script, Knight & Day is generic multiplex fodder of the blandest order.

It shouldn’t be like this as the opening period is interesting and part of its appeal is waiting to see whether the film becomes an action romp, espionage thriller or a tale of true love. In today’s era of demographics it tries to please everyone and fails across the board. Cruise can pull off the action hero role with easy and Diaz does the bumbling blonde with aplomb.

The threat is never really apparent as Knight & Day tries to be clever and in these times of Shutter Island and Inception, it comes across like a five year old. Enemies are thinly displayed and CGI sequences easily identifiable. For its two big lead names, I predict a rapid descent for Knight & Day into the wastelands of forgotten films with over inflated budgets.

Many visitors will only stay within the confines of the capital and while there are whisky attractions in Edinburgh itself, there’s nothing to with going to the true source. Distilleries are closer than you think, with Glenkinchie in East Lothian sharing the same EH postcode.

Diageo owns several distilleries across Scotland and has put together the ‘classic malts’ scheme to reward those who sign up. Now I’ve mentioned that earlier right here, also making the promise to get around each distillery in due course. Earlier this year I visited Northern Ireland and Bushmills, which isn’t part of the scheme, but like most traditional distilleries features original architecture and the option to purchase an exclusive distillery bottle.

Bushmills also offered the option to have your own label but this is little more than a signature and sticky label. Compare that to Glenmorangie where you actually poor the whisky (cask strength) into a tradition bottle, fill out the label, complete the log book and leave with your bottle in a sack cloth, and you’ll agree which option is better, albeit more expensive. Having been around a few distilleries in my time, there are subtle differences to each tour.

It is worth signing up for this scheme in advance. If you do that then you’ll be able to hand over your booklet and be taken on the tour for free! Also included on the tour ticket is a discount voucher; so don’t go spending in the shop until you get back from the tour.

On this trip I had the opportunity to visit three distilleries namely Dalwhinnie, Glen Ord and Clynelish. If all goes well to plan, later this year I will try and cover the Speyside region and next year make the trip to Islay and Skye.

As Diageo owns each distillery many of the props, seating areas and displays are the same at each venue, but the tours have their own differentials. The staff at each venue are reasonably knowledgeable and very friendly, making everyone feel welcome. If they don’t know, then they will endeavour to find out, going so far as to phone another distillery for me or show a genuine interest in your appreciation of the malts.

One aspect that the tours below lack is language; it’s all in English and sometimes relayed in a regional accent that even those from south of the border struggled to keep up with. Leaflets do have translations but it is an area that can be improved. Attending these tours the widespread of whisky was suitably confirmed with a variety of ages and countries in attendance. I counted nationalities including Germany, Spain, England, Africa and Japan, all enjoying the experience. Even take a moment to sign the visitor’s book at each location and look back on previous entries for confirmation.

Dalwhinnie

A beautiful location, one that you cannot miss travelling up the A9. It is one of the highest distilleries and set in a picturesque location. Too often I’ve driven past, looking at the buildings dominating the hillside above the village. Being one of the smaller distilleries, the tour is a tad shorter than the others here. A reasonable 30 minutes or so sees you whisked into the main facility before finishing with a look through the glass pane where some of the barrels are stored.

Dalwhinnie is not able to store all of its produce with much being warehoused in Falkirk; such is the limited size of the site. Distilleries in Scotland operate a scheme where they house each other’s barrels, even those of competitors, thereby preventing a cataclysmic loss if a fire occurs. For this reason you cannot take photographs inside the main buildings, but you do receive a wee dram at the end as compensation!

I’d recommend Dalwhinnie as a great place to start if you are heading into the Highlands. Not only is it a central location but also the whisky itself is sweet, drinkable and kind to any palate. I really feel sorry for anyone that starts out first at the Talisker distillery, which is a heavily smoked malt and won’t be to everyone’s taste. The shop at Dalwhinnie also offers an exclusion distillery bottle that has been distilled an extra time. From 1991 and bottled in 2009, it’s only £14 more than the standard 15yr malt that retails here for £31, making it a unique souvenir! As you can readily pick up the 15yr malt in any shop, I’d suggest the distillers edition as a nice memento. It is a flavoursome offering, smooth and attractively priced for an 18yr single malt. Being owned by the same group means you can pick up other malts if you’re not able to visit other locations on the scheme, but not exclusive editions.

Glen Ord

Set in Muir of Ord, this distillery is within touching distance of Inverness. Muir of Ord has its own small distillery and should not be confused with this epic distillery. The whisky itself is disappointing and mainly aimed at the Asian market particularly Taiwan, hence why there is no exclusive distillery option. The name itself won’t ring many bells as it is currently labelled as Singleton and is arguably the weakest entry in the ‘classic malts’ scheme. A look around the seating and shop area will reveal the various bottles this distillery has produced and the number of name changes it has undergone. This series of image changes has resulted in a confused heritage and brand that feels out of place. However the tour itself is one of the best, even if the wee dram at the end it too heavily flavoured by the casks and not to my liking.

Muir of Ord is totally different to Dalwhinnie, a more sizeable, industrial distillery with the emphasis on volume. Before the tour commences its well worth setting some time aside to wander through the various historical items including an illegal bootlegging still that are in the large exhibition area. Inside you can view the spirit stills and get up close with the various stages of production, never being hurried along. Perhaps the real bonus is being taken into one of warehouses they have on the site, feeling the drop in temperature and seeing line upon line of casks, sitting patiently. Here your guide describes the various casks used, their differences and their limited shelf life. Props are also on display so you can smell the different finishes the casks bring to the distilling process. Despite the disappointing whisky, it is a more thorough tour than that at Dalwhinnie.

Clynelish

If you thought Dalwhinnie or Glen Ord were in the north, then think again. Clynelish is on the outskirts of Brora in Sutherland and is the most northern location on the ‘classic malts’ list, being midway between Dornoch and Wick. Its remoteness may dissuade many from making the trip and the fact it’s not open on a Sunday, but if you’re in the region it is only a 30-minute drive north of the Glenmoraigine distillery at Tain.

This was the most enjoyable tour so far, particularly as it seemed to be a quiet day so my friends and I were the only ones on the tour. The guide was extremely helpful and took time to answer our questions. A generally relaxed atmosphere was evident in the distillery, as we were able to wander through at our own pace, appreciating the process and also the workers describing what they were doing in more detail. Despite the heavy rain of the past few weeks, the spring draught meant that production was not at full pelt so our timing was ideal to see a different stage of the distilling process. Also highlighting how reliant these distilleries are on local traditional water sources.

As you will see from the photographs the old distillery is still on site but is no longer used except for the warehouses, which you also gain entry to as part of the tour. There are six prominent casks with plaques here, which were set down in anticipation of the bicentenary celebration in 2019. No doubt those six will make up a very limited special edition, I may watch out for that one nearer the time. Apparently last year the distillery manager thought it would be beneficial to include the original stills on the tour which are housed in their original location. It makes for a real contrast walking from the new distillery to its original site; I really prefer the traditional buildings. Also worth noting are the last few Brora casks are due sometime this year and then that output will be sadly over. The 2009 release is in the well-stocked shop, retailing for an eye watering £230.

The distillery shop is easily the smallest and the use of props nil compared to others. However Clynelish stocks not one, but two exclusive editions along with some very limited releases I did not see elsewhere. As ever your tour ticket includes a discount for the shop. The standard bottle is the 14yr malt that with your discount is a well-priced £28. I do enjoy this malt, it has a slight smoky taste yet retains a crisp bite with that distinctive waxy finish. Yeah, I thought the same when I first tasted Clynelish, but that’s one of its distinctive qualities.

The first of the exclusive editions is a Distillers option, packaged similarly to the Dalwhinnie release (£42 including discount) and like that malt, has undergone an extra maturing process. This heightens the smoky taste but it remains an extremely drinkable malt, but I do prefer the original. The other exclusive is the cask strength bottling, and coming straight from the barrel provides an extra kick at 58% alcohol content. It lacks the refinement and flavours of the standard release but I could see myself heading back to the distillery when I’m next in the area to pick up a bottle. Even as I type this I’m still feeling that extra large dram!

I’ve posted all of photographs I was able to take for each distillery in each of the links below. If you do have the opportunity to visit Scotland then I would recommend a distillery tour, whichever one you take I hope you find it enjoyable. As suggested I will try and do a few more tours later this year and aim to try some outside of the ‘classic malts’ range including Balblair, my current favourite tipple who I hear do not do tours as a rule, but are very accommodating.

Dalwhinnie Photo Album

I did consider checking out a few more offerings especially with the 4 tickets for £20, but alas the whole day clashes with Formula 1. And anyone who knows me realises F1 comes first, even if it is the traditional bore-fest that is Valencia. A tiresome harbour circuit that deserves to be raised to the ground.

Edinburgh is into full festival mode now with Book Festival tickets on sale tomorrow. The Film Festival has broken away from the stranglehold of August to carve out its own identity in June. A brave move and for some, a questionable one. Certainly the showings I have seen this year have been haphazard in ticket sale terms. This is why the mainstream blockbusters in the listing will carry and support the lesser known quantities. If that ensures things continue then I am all for it, just don't expect me to attend any 3D showings.

As for the June slot it take a few more years for the Festival to re-establish itself. Sales are not helped by the lack of Fringe, International Festival or Book Festival devotees who may have frequented the odd cinema screening. Why after all travel to Edinburgh just for one festival when you can visit during the height of summer and experience so much more?

The 2010 Book Festival listing is disappointing. While I enjoy sci-fi, fanatsy, fiction and unusual tales these have been mainly overlooked once again. I appreciate such genres have their own dedicated gatherings and flicking through the brochure I can appreciate why. The 2010 offering seems a melting pot of Economic and Financial prophecies, Z-list celebrities selling their wares, selected Scottish writers and tales of hardship. More than ever a balance needs to be struck. The Book Festival seems aimed at a select few. I can only find one event of interest and that's Nicolai Lilin.

While all the headlines and news spots are dedicated to showings such as Toy Story 3, The Illusionist or Sean Connery. I firmly believe that it’s the unknown offerings that are the true heart of the event and its real purpose.

This may be your only opportunity to see films such as Putty Hill or Girl With Black Balloons on the big screen or in any form. Distribution being what it is nowadays, few manage a return and many I’ve seen over the (gulp) decades have vanished without a trace.

The premise is that we follow the build up to a funeral of a young heroin addict in Baltimore and the aftershocks. Through the film we are introduced to his family and friends, who paint vivid and candid pictures of their situation and their own environments. The economic situation and restraints placed on individuals are as visible as the work of the tattoo artist featured in the story.

Putty Hill is a film with atmosphere. This is arguably its strongest quality as it combines the stillness of Slow Cinema (not one of my favourite genres) with a documentary style. However those onscreen are cast in their roles and are often questioned by a voice from behind the camera, while at other times acting out their role. A varied assortment of characters drop in and out of proceedings as we build a picture of a grieving fractured family. The community at large also forms a major part of this snapshot, as friends close and distant offer their thoughts and recollections. Putty Hill does not seek to provide an insight into yet another overdose victim in Baltimore, or where his life went wrong. We're left to make our own judgements in this respect along with the characters who all feel a sense of loss and particularly those who witnessed the vicious circle of drug abuse.

Baltimore is well known for The Corner, an excellent book that was made into a mini-series by HBO. As I sat in Filmhouse 1 I tried to drag from my memory where I had seen a rich tapestry of characters painted against a canvas of economic despair and living on the cracks of society. Yes, The Corner. Particularly the style of questioning from behind the lens that brings a first person dimension to the experience.

Putty Hill is a film that only a modest few will be able to stomach for its empty atmosphere and lack of traditional plot signposts. There is a wonderful dynamic at play here; one rarely used in cinema. It is a memorable film but sadly for many I presume the wrong reasons, given the departures during screening, from what was already a scant audience.
