Security Software Market To Grow 11 Percent In 2010

2010-08-20T10:27:00.004+05:30

Worldwide security software revenue is forecast to surpass $16.5 billion in 2010, an 11.3 percent increase from 2009 revenue of $14.8 billion, according to analyst firm Gartner. Although the economic downturn slowed security revenue to 7 percent growth in 2009, organizations have indicated an intention to give priority to security budgets, said Gartner analysts in a release issued from Gartner’s 2010 Security and Risk Management Summit being held in London.

"Most segments of the security software market will continue to grow over the next few years, although a significant degree of variation is expected between the more-established and less-mature technologies," said Ruggero Contu, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner. "Overall, security will remain one of the fastest-growing areas within the enterprise software market."
Gartner analysts said security software markets will weather the current economic downturn better than in 2001 and 2002, because the market conditions are dramatically different in terms of maturity, penetration, confidence in IT, and geographic and vertical mix.
"Security software vendors that have a balanced mix of channel, new license and maintenance revenue streams and flexibility in contractual terms, such as software as a service (SaaS), open source and outsourcing, have the strongest options for continued growth and to even out the risk," Contu said. "Shrinking discretionary spending budgets have heightened competition for new maintenance and license revenue streams and placed a renewed emphasis on vendor performance and viability."
The consumer security software market remains the largest security software segment, with 2010 revenue projected to reach $4.2 billion in 2010, up from $3.9 billion in 2009. The endpoint protection platform (enterprise) market is the No. 2 security software segment, with revenue on pace to reach $3 billion in 2010, up from $2.9 billion in 2009.
The security software market continues to benefit from prioritization and demands related to compliance requirements, as well as the need to keep up with ever-increasing sophistication and volume in the threat landscape.

Microsoft To Show Off IE9 Beta Next Month

2010-08-18T23:25:00.000+05:30

Microsoft will unveil the Internet Explorer 9 beta next month at an event in San Francisco titled Beauty of the Web.

Microsoft has built IE9 with the expectation that HTML5 will blur the line between Websites and native applications, and the company has built numerous enhancements in the forthcoming release.
"Developers are already working hard on some amazing new web experiences enabled by Internet Explorer 9," said James Pratt, Product Manager on the IE9 team, in a blog post.
Microsoft has been trumpeting IE9's speedy, hardware-accelerated HTML 5 rendering for the past several months, often by pitting IE9 against Firefox and Google's Chrome browser in handling graphically intensive Websites. However, critics have pointed out the selective nature of Microsoft's testing and noted that all of its competitors are also working on hardware fueled HTML5 rendering.
So far Microsoft has dished up over 2.5 million downloads of the four IE9 platform previews, the most recent of which was released in early August.

Facebook launches child safety application

2010-07-14T00:19:00.000+05:30

Social networking website Facebook has agreed to adopt an application aimed at improving the online safety of its younger users, a child protection group said on Monday.
The application, which follows a long campaign by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), appears on a user's profile page when they add or bookmark it and allows children and teenagers to report suspicious or inappropriate behavior.
Particularly aimed at users aged 13 to 18, it also provides help, advice and support about staying safe online.

"We know from speaking to offenders that a visible deterrent could protect young people online," said Jim Gamble, chief executive of CEOP, adding that the application should provide reassurance to parents whose teenagers use the site.
An automatic message will appear on the Facebook homepage of all teenage users, inviting them to add the application.
Pressure to introduce such measures intensified toward the end of last year after 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a man posing as a teenager whom she had met through Facebook.
"Together we have developed a new way of helping young people stay safe online," Joanna Shields, Facebook's vice president for Europe, Middle-East and Africa, said of the link-up.
"It is only through the constant and concerted efforts of the industry, police, parents and young people themselves that we can all keep safe online.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center, a government law enforcement agency, has been after social networking sites to provide protections for its underage users. Social networking sites, says CEOP, provide comparatively easy venues for child predators. The agency has seen some success--Bebo and MySpace already adopted the panic button--but Facebook resisted for a long time, saying its own protection was sufficient.

How to Fast Fixes PC Errors?

2010-07-05T01:04:00.001+05:30

A lot of computer users have a misconception that fixing PC errors is a tedious and time-consuming task. While it is true that it may take a lot of time in resolving a few stubborn errors that just won’t go away, most of the errors can be dealt with in a short period of time. This is specifically true of software and application related computer errors, which are also one of the most frequently encountered computer problems. These errors can be solved in a fraction of time as compared to getting on the phone, explaining the problem to the expert and waiting for him or her to check your computer.

So in case you have been outsourcing all your computer problems to technical experts due to a lack of time, perhaps you should revisit your strategy and first analyze whether the problem can be resolved quickly at your end. Let us look at one such type of PC error known as DLL errors that may harass you and look quite intimidating but that are actually quite easy to fix.
It is important to understand that DLL files or Dynamic Link Library files are no ordinary files. They were created by Microsoft, the manufacturer of Windows Operating Systems, to serve a special purpose. The aim was to make things efficient and simpler by creating files that comprise codes and functions that can be shared among multiple applications. Since DLL files are often critical for the smooth operations of an application, any DLL error can disrupt the functioning of the whole application.
People often misconceive that DLL files have strange names which do not make any sense. However, most of the DLL file names give some indications about its origin. For instance, you may encounter error in the DLL file connapi.dll and you may not know where to start. In order to fix connapi.dll errors, you must begin by searching for origin of the file. On searching, you will find that this process belongs to Connectivity API of Nokia.

Google buys ITA for $700M to boost travel search

2010-07-02T23:43:00.000+05:30

Google has reached an agreement to buy ITA Software, a maker of air-travel flight-information software whose customers include major airlines and online travel agencies.
Google will pay $700 million in cash for the Cambridge, Mass.-based software vendor, the companies announced on Thursday.
Google plans to use ITA's software to improve the ways in which people can find flight information online using Google search services, Google said in a statement.
Travel information searches make up a significant portion of Google queries, so the company wants to enhance its technology in this area, which is ripe for innovation, Google and ITA executives said during a press conference.
"Travel is one of the hardest search problems around, both in terms of how users like to express their queries and in terms of the data and accuracy and speed needed to get people the types of results they're looking for," said Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of Search Products & User Experience.
Jeremy Wertheimer, ITA CEO and president, said the 500-person company has been involved in the online travel information market from its beginnings and looks forward to leveraging Google's resources to further develop and refine its software.
"We're proud of what we've accomplished. Although we've come a long way, we feel there's a lot more that we can do to improve online travel," he said.
More than half of all airline tickets are bought online, making this a very large business, but the user experience leaves a lot to be desired, which affects not only consumers but also airlines and travel agencies, said Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Today, consumers often have to visit multiple sites to find the best deals, which constantly change, he said.
"Airline travel and [online] search are a perfect opportunity for more innovation, more investment," as well as for more competition, Schmidt said.
ITA, founded in 1996, counts among its customers American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Kayak, Orbitz, Southwest Airlines, TripAdvisor, United Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Microsoft's Bing.
Google said it will "honor all existing agreements" ITA has in place and plans to add new partners.
