Jailer is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language black comedy-action film starring Rajinikanth, and written and directed by Nelson. It is produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. Rajinikanth’s supporting cast includes Jackie Shroff, Shiva Rajkumar, Sunil, Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Mirnaa Menon, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Vasanth Ravi. Mohanlal makes a cameo appearance.

The plot revolves around a retired cop, who avenges his son’s death. The film was officially announced in February 2022 with the working title Thalaivar 169, being the 169th film of Rajinikanth, while the official title Jailer was announced in June. Principal photography began in August 2022 in Chennai and wrapped in June 2023. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while the cinematography and editing were handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan and R. Nirmal.

Jailer released theatrically on 10 August 2023 to mostly positive reviews from the critics.

Jailer is reported to collect on its opening day ₹40 crore from Tamil Nadu and ₹20 crore from other states and countries, making the worldwide opening day gross ₹60 crore.

Siby Jeyya of India Herald gave the film 4 out of 5 and said “The King has claimed his rightful throne back”. 

Sridevi S of The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 and wrote “It’s director Nelson’s show in the first half, superstar Rajini takes the baton in the second half.” 

Janaki K of India Today gave the film 3 out of 5 and wrote “With solid performances and good camera work, Jailer is strictly a theatre watch.” 

Gopinath Rajendran of The Hindu wrote “Jailer might be far from perfect, but with the towering presence of Rajinikanth standing tall along with Nelson’s fortified writing, this is a a commendable comeback for both the actor and filmmaker.”

Kirubhakar Purushothaman of The Indian Express gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and wrote ” Nelson Dilipkumar film is Rajinikanth’s version of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, but with a twist. Saying that doesn’t take away anything from this fun-filled entertainer.  

Manoj Kumar R of OTT Play gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and wrote “Jailer is a highly entertaining crowd-pleaser. Nothing path-breaking but it is sure to become an enjoyable delight for the masses.”

Pratikshya Mishra of The Quint gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Without Rajinikanth, Jailer might not have had the same magnetism as it does but since the star is on screen, flicking his shades and throwing lighters in the air, it’s a whole different story.”

Priyanka Sundar of Firstpost gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “One of the most memorable things about Nelson’s directorial, Jailer, starring Rajinikanth, is the fact that the superstar doesn’t get into a zone where he performs unbelievable action sequences”.

123 Telugu gave the film 2.75 out of 5 and wrote “Jailer suffers from a wafer-thin plot, and the second half fell like a pack of cards.”

JAYALALITHAA REJECTED RAJINIKANTH’S BILLA

An interesting trivia about the movie is that the female lead role essayed by Sripriya was initially offered to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and former AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa, who was a top film star in the 60s and 70s, however, was doing fewer films towards the end of 70s. A 1980-published article declared that it was because Jayalalithaa was struggling to get good roles.

Jaya was apparently irked by this article and in response, wrote a letter where she stated that she was ‘not struggling to stage a comeback’.

In the same letter written to Piousji of Khaas Baat, she pointed out that she has been turning down some excellent offers. Which ones? Rajinikanth’s Billa.

“Perhaps you don’t know that the heroine’s role in Balaji’s Billa, opposite Rajinikanth, was first offered to me. It was only after I refused to do the film, that Balaji signed Sripriya for the role. Everybody knows that Balaji is one of the foremost film producers in India today, and Rajinikanth is Tamil screen’s superstar. If I am capable of turning down such a dazzling offer, does that not prove conclusively that I am not in the least struggling to stage a comeback?” Jayalalithaa had written in the letter.

In the very same letter, Jayalalitha pointed out shat she was disinterested in pursuing a film career anymore. She said that she was well-off financially and can continue to live like a queen for the rest of her life.

BILLA WAS REMADE WITH AJITH IN 2007

Billa was later remade in Tamil with Ajith in the lead role. The film, directed by Vishnuvardhan, released in 2007 and went on to receive rave reviews from the audience as well as critics.

Superstar Rajnikanth rocked the box office down south with Endhiran, but the Hindi version of the mega budget sci-fi outing Robot lost out to Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor’s mushy antics in Anjaana Anjaani in the northern region, where audiences are opting for the young romance saga.

The Ranbir-Priyanka Chopra starrer earned around Rs.260 million in the initial weekend, while Robot, which also stars Aishwarya Rai, raked in close to Rs.70 million. But in the southern region, Endhiran has broken all records by earning a staggering Rs.1 billion in the opening weekend and scalpers were even selling tickets for a whopping Rs.5,000.

Another release of the week, family comedy Khichdi – The Movie failed to invite much footfalls and lost to the two biggies. It could collect only Rs.55 million.

“The weekend was rocking. Anjaana Anjaani was very good with over 80 percent occupancy while Robot was in the second spot with close to 70 percent footfalls. Khichdi, however didn’t go as per expectations and managed only about 50 percent occupany,” Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (Cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, told IANS.

While Anjaana Anjaani was made on a budget of Rs.25 crore, Robot is Indian cinema’s most expensive movie with an investment of approximately Rs.1.75 billion.

Rajnikanth, 61, defied gravity and took artificial intelligence to the next level in his role as a Robot, again proving there is nothing that he can’t do.

According to the latest report, Rajinikanth himself will join the sets of the film on October 10 in Hyderabad. Portions involving Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh and Rajinikanth will be shot at Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad. The makers wanted to complete the film early next year, as they might release it in summer 2021.

Superstar will be travelling to Hyderabad in his car from Chennai. The rest of the actors will be reaching Hyderabad in a couple of days.

Annaatthe was initially scheduled to hit the screens on Diwali 2020. Now, things got postponed due to Covid-19 crisis. An official announcement regarding the film’s shooting schedule will be made in the coming weeks. Sources also say that the team is planning to shoot few action sequences in Chennai as well.

It is worth mentioning that the the first-look poster of the film was released a few weeks before the lockdown.

Annaatthe is directed by Siruthai Siva and many actors including Khushbu, Nayanthara, Meena, Keerthy Suresh, Prakash Raj and Soori are part of the film. D Imman, who had previously worked with Siva in Ajith’s hit film Viswasam, has been roped in to compose music for the project.

The film went on floors in December last year at Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad.

Actor Kamal Haasan agreed to bear the educational expenses of his children. Following suit, Superstar Rajinikanth spoke to Ponnambalam recently and enquired about his health. He also agreed to lend financial help to take care of his medical treatment.

Speaking to IndiaToday.in, Rajinikanth’s publicist Riaz Ahmed confirmed the news and added, “Rajini sir spoke to Ponnambalam personally and has agreed to help him. He won’t disclose the amount he has given the family. He also wished for a speedy recovery.”

A couple of days ago, it was reported that Kamal Haasan and his team have been keeping in touch with Ponnambalam by enquiring him about his health every day.

Ponnambalam, through his public relations officer, released a video of himself from the hospital. In the video, the actor is breathing with the help of an oxygen mask. It is unclear whether he will undergo surgery to improve his kidney functioning.

The ailing actor stepped foot in the Tamil film industry as a stuntman. Ponnambalam has acted with Rajinikanth in films like Muthu and Arunachalam. Apoorva Sagodarargal and Michael Madana Kamarajan are some of the films in which he had shared screen space with Kamal Haasan.

Ponnambalam was last seen in Jayam Ravi-starrer Comali, directed by Pradeep Ranganathan.

According to the reports, Rajinikanth is in the US to get his general health check-up done. He is expected to undergo a few tests there in the next few weeks and will return to India on July 8.
