Every business today is looking for an ideal means to market their products and services efficiently. But not every one of them have succeeded this goal successfully. Many of them tend to be small businesses and wouldn’t have much of a budget set aside for advertising and marketing. However, Facebook has become one of the top choices for businesses to market their products and many of them have managed to find success with gaining exposure on a global scale. The best part about Facebook marketing is that it happens to be free and if you manage to devise that right strategy to use Facebook for business, then you are bound to generate a significant number of leads. If you look closely, the business world is exploiting this potential of Facebook to amass leads from around the globe. The best thing about Facebook marketing is that you have access to a wide range of audience. With Facebook, you don’t have to go out there and find relevant leads for your business. You can make them come to you and how you do it depends on your creativity and skills.

The first thing you need to do is devise a Facebook marketing strategy that people have never seen before and we all know that people always tend to get curious when they see something new. You need to take advantage of this curiosity of people and if you manage to do that, then half your work is done. If you are not sure what an ideal Facebook marketing strategy would be, you can always do a bit of research online and you will find several success stories from people who have managed to take advantage of this social networking platform. It would be hard to find someone who doesn’t spend at least a little time on Facebook every day and it is up to you to decide how you want to generate traffic and leads for your website. There are many companies who are already using Facebook for business and you can always watch and analyse them closely to understand what works well with this platform. Depending upon the type of product and service you have to market, you will need to devise your Facebook marketing plan. You can always keep a close watch of what your competitors are doing. This will give you an idea on what needs to be done to keep up with your competition in this competitive market.

The post How important is Facebook marketing for your business? first appeared on .

Trying to get your business information and/or product out to the public, around Greensboro NC or any large city, has always been a task and headache. That is why we have the internet. It helps you easily reach millions of people and possibly potential clients that are located right here in Greensboro NC or through out the United States! The internet is an affordable way of communicating to your audience. If you don't want to lose business to your competitors, You have to advertise to them.

The post Why You need a Web Site first appeared on .

Millions of people have access to the World Wide Web. No matter what your business is you can’t ignore millions of people. Even if you just conduct business within your community like Greensboro, Raleigh or larger cities, you want to let people know that you are interested in providing them your service.

Lets face it, social media is taking over the internet and clogging peoples time. The good news is that you can gain something off of that. For example: If you have a website you can promote your Facebook page on your site and drive traffic to your social media. This in turn could potentially lead that user back to your site and could turn into a lead of some sort!

If you have thought of it, chances are someone else has to! Not to burst your creative bubble. Most people that are trying to sell and product or service has a website. This means your competitor has a website as well. That person will be getting more clients than you.

Have you ever wanted a business that is open 24/7 without being manned? Having a website can do just this. Most people search the web in the evenings when most businesses are closed. This gives you the upper hand, because if a client searches and finds your product/services then they could easily become a client!

Most people do not look in papers or phone books to find information or services. They browse the internet. With search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.. a user could easily find what they need in seconds on the go. You need to make sure that user can find you once they are searching for a product/service like yours.

Get your brand of your business out there. Having a website improves the overall image of your business. Having a website makes you look legit, in most cases. People do take advantage and create fraud websites. Having a website out weighs the benefit of the amount of fraud websites.

Studies have shown that small businesses make a higher revenue by having a website. You can market your product/service to a lot more people and a lot faster!

Technology is getting more and more advanced as the days tick by. As technology grows so does the devices and screens that the users views the technology on. Screens are getting more and more advanced and ultra high definition, which brings me to this point. More advanced the screens are becoming the more our images and icons become blurry. That is unless you design for those type of screens.

The post Scalable Icons for your web site – Font Awesome first appeared on .

Font Awesome

I am a big fan of high quality images on high resolution and retina screens. I started last year designing high quality images for the screens of high resolution and retina devices. I also include my icons with this as well. I researched designing for these types of screens and came across “scalable icons”. At first I thought I had struck gold, at least to me. I was going to enjoy the benefit of not having to create two separate icon sets for my standard and HD screens. I was really intrigued about a set of the scalable icons I had found called Font Awesome.

Font Awesome gives you scalable vector icons that can be customized through CSS. Let me stop right there and explain to you what a vector image is.

I will break this down for you “Scalable Vector Icon”

– Scalable: Is just what it saids resizable.

– Vector: The graphic or design is created by math not Pixels. Pixels is what a raster image (example: photograph) is made of. It is tiny blocks that make up the image. Once you enlarge a photo you will see that it starts to get blurry more you enlarge it. When scaling Vector images or icons, the image or icon will be recreated by a way of math for a nice and crisp clean look.

– Icon: Of course you should know what an icon is. It image representing something.

It is one font and has a choice of hundreds of icons. At the time of this post font awesome had 439 available icons. Another beauty of font awesome is it does not use any Javascript to make the fonts usable. Font Awesome caught my attention because when I was designing this Greensboro web design site I could use the icons and it looks great on retina and high definition screens. No @2x icons that I had to export and only one font, NO IMAGES! Below I have included an example of font awesome with different sizes and it does not matter what type of screen you are viewing this on the icons will look crisp and clear. Below I have created a few examples. As you can see I am change the size and color of the icon just by CSS and this will be nice and crisp icon on retina and HD screens. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions.

The technology is getting better and more and more people are using high-resolution and Retina ready screens. Designing for this can be tricky but I have come up with a pretty good method to preparing my files for the retina and high-resolution screens. This was a challenge for me and took me a while to figure out the best method of setting up my files.

The post Setting up your design for Retina images first appeared on .

When setting up your file for retina you will need to create the original size of the image. I am going to use Photoshop for this example. Let’s say you are designing a logo or advertisement and the original size is 205px X 185px. You will first begin by setting up a file as the 205px X 185px.

Once you have done that, navigate to Image > Image Size and click the drop down (were it reads pixels) and select percent. Make sure you have constrain properties checked. Type 200 in the box that holds your width size (205px). This should now make the file 410px X 370px.

The reason we do this is because retina images is 2x the pixel density. The easiest way to explain is that a retina display times an image by 200%. The reason images look blurry, while browsing a website with a device that has a high-resolution screen, is because the device is enlarging that image 1.5 to 2 times it’s size.

Once you have finished your design you will save the high-resolution image as “advertisement@2x.jpg”. After that, once again navigate to Image > Image Size and click the drop down (were it reads pixels) and select percent, but this time you will only make the size 50% less and then save for web with file name “advertisement.jpg”. After you saved the 50% smaller image then you will want to CTRL + Z on PC or CMD + Z on Mac. This way you will always have the high resolution image to start with.

Once you have saved your advertisement you can use something like retina.js to implement the images. I am using retina images in this blog and throughout the site so if you are viewing this site on a retina or high-resolution screen you will see the images are nice and crisp. Please leave a comment if you have any questions or I can be of further assistance. Have a Great Day!

The post Setting up your design for Retina images first appeared on .

With the up and coming use of mobile devices rising, it is good to start designing responsive websites or mobile versions of websites. 2013 was a big year for responsive website builds. The number of users viewing a website on a mobile device is only going to double if not triple in the years to come.

The post Responsive Webdesign first appeared on .

What is a Responsive Website?

A responsive website (mobile friendly) is a website that is designed to be viewable on a TV to a phone and any device in-between. A Web designer will create the site so it uses low bandwidth because it is only one website. The advantage to having a responsive website is simply, your client can view your site on the go. Most everyone can agree that more and more people are using their smart phone and tablets to find the information they need. If you do not have a responsive website then you could be missing out on clients. A good example would be the family protection center website below, which was a lead generation site. I created this as a responsive website (for my full-time employer) and within a month it was out performing a website that we had online for six years! This was due to a high volume of mobile users filling out the quote form on the go! So just think about what you are trying to do with your website and decide if it could be right for you. It would cost a little more than a standard website but it is well worth it! If you have any questions just leave a comment below and I will responsed.

Here are a couple of examples of responsive web sites I have designed:
Alliance Life USA
Good Samaritan Bonus
Mortgage Protection

Web Designers

If you are a web designer interested in learning about responsive design here are a couple of good frameworks.

There are a couple different responsive frameworks out there to help you get started. There is Gumby 960 framework and Bootstrap. They both have great documentation and good examples to follow. I have used both, but I have been leaning more toward Bootstrap lately. One reason is because I like to implement font awesome which works well with Bootstrap. I used Bootstrap and font awesome on this Greensboro Web Design site.

The post Responsive Webdesign first appeared on .

So the question I asked myself was, “How can I use this to my advantage?”. I found that I could create arrows without images. Below is example of what any arrow would look like with CSS.

Here is the code that creates this effect

.borders{
border-color: transparent green transparent transparent;
border-style:solid;
border-width: 15px;
width: 0;
height: 0
}

Just remember when using four values in a single property, like in the border-color property, the first value is the bottom and then clock wise from that point.

I have tested the css property in all major browsers, and seems to work great!

The post Create a triangle with CSS ONLY! first appeared on .

Have you ever noticed fonts in FireFox are hard to read or blurry. The culprit to this issue is Helvetica Neue fonts. I keep this in mind when I'm designing for the web.

Take care when you design for any thing that is using html for the web. Choose your fonts carefully. From my research I have found this to be FireFox running on a PC issue. I can not replicate the problem on an apple product running FireFox. This is example of what the fonts will look like.

Why I think this is the culprit?

I was able to correct the issue when I used firebug to remove the font-family Helvetica Neue. After removing the Helvetica Neue. This is the results I ended up with.

As you can see the difference in the fonts. I would never have believed this if i had not done the research to find this issue.

Here are a few usability rules that I read in smashing magazine and found interesting and helpful. This is great information for concentrating on designing for the user.

The post Usability Rules and Principles for Web Design first appeared on .

1. 7 links in your navigation – George A. Miller’s studies showed that the human brian short term memory can only retain 5 – 9 things at a time. In this case it is a good practice to only have the max of 7 links in your navigation. Pretty interesting! I did not realize that until I found this information.

2. 2 second rule – This is a rule that the user should not have to wait more then 2 seconds for something to happen. Say if they click a link and a new page loads or any kind of reaction from a user action. This has always been a struggle for me. I am always trying to optimize my web site so it will load faster and response better.

3. 3 Click-Rule – This rule suggest that if a user does not find what they are looking for in 3 seconds that they will leave the site.

So here are a couple of rules to follow when designing user interfaces. There are plenty more that you can find at smashing magazine.
