Trying to figure out what to register for on your baby registry can be a challenge. And if you are expecting twins, you probably wonder what you need 2 of. Does everything have to be doubled? Not really.

Some things, like car seats and cribs, are obvious double needs, but most of the other baby accessories can be single items.

Here’s what we have in our household …

Double items:

Car seats

Cribs & mattresses- We used one crib until the girls were 8 months old.

Walkers – For a couple of months, we only had 1 walker but then the girls started to “fight” over who played in the walker. So, eventually 2 will be a necessity. Our girls love to chase each other and play bumper cars while in their walkers.

High chairs – We chose booster seats (like this one) instead of high chairs simply because of space in our kitchen.

Single items:

Stroller – We have a double Graco stroller. However, I could see the need for having two simple strollers (like the $15 ones you can find at Walmart) for certain occasions.

Swing

Jumperoo

Changing table

Dresser - This could be a double need if you are expecting a boy and a girl.

Toys – Twins do not need two of the same toy, especially larger noise-making toys. Some things, like dolls or stuffed animals, are nice to have two of but they don’t have to be identical. LG and DJ both sleep with a stuffed animal – same style and brand but one bear and one tiger.

Diaper pail – You’ll empty it more often but why take up more space with another one?

Play yard

Bathtub – Read my review of two infant tubs.

Bumbo seat – This is an item that you may want two of. We primarily got our Bumbo seat to help LG develop her muscles to sit better. DJ was already sitting fine on her own at that point.

Carrier/Sling – We have a Baby Bjorn carrier as well as a Moby Wrap that I used mainly around the house. If your spouse wants to carry a baby too, then this would be a double item, otherwise one would be sufficient.

Would love some input from other twin moms of what items you doubled!

ABOUT THE BOOK

They vowed, as children, to be silent…

When her father orchestrates a surprise trip to the summer house of her childhood, Bailee Cooper is unprepared for what follows. What is intended to be a happy reunion for Bailee and her sisters quickly becomes shrouded by memories from the past.

Together again, the three sisters sift through their recollections of fifteen years ago…of an ill mother, and of their father making a desperate choice. One sister believes their silence must end and the truth be revealed. But they soon come to wonder if they can trust their memories.

Mark Delahunt arrives in the wake of this emotional turmoil. Determined to win Bailee’s affection, Mark becomes a strong fortress for her in this time of confusion, and what was once a tentative promise begins to take root and grow. Caught between the past and an uncertain future, can Bailee let God guide her to healing…or will she risk losing the chance to embrace love?

MY THOUGHTS

Tracie Peterson has been one of my favorite authors for years and years. However, I think House of Secrets might be her first contemporary novel that I’ve read. Aside from the superb writing, the entire book is completely opposite of her historical fiction book.

Gone are the streams of history and details, the romance that the plot revolves around (although there is a romance), and the 3rd person viewpoint. Written in first person, House of Secrets reveals the innermost thoughts of character Bailee Cooper. What makes this book unique in the Christian fiction realm are the weighty topics Peterson explores.

Bailee Cooper and her two younger sisters have vague memories of the night their mom died years ago. Sadly, the girls believe their father killed their mother. And for as long as she can remember, Bailee has felt responsible for her sisters, although she isn’t entirely sure why. When the Cooper sisters return to their summer house after years of absence, the memories come flooding back and Bailee reveals to their sisters that their mom was mentally ill with schizophrenia. To say that the Cooper girls led a dysfunctional life in a dysfunctional family would be an understatement.

Other weighty topics that tie into the plot are depression, psychiatry, repressed memories, abandonment, and medical illnesses. Author Tracie Peterson treats each topic with delicacy and accuracy. She offers a biblical perspective as well as a balanced perspective through the various characters.

Overall, House of Secrets felt very “real”, like the story could have happened to a neighbor or someone we know. The book is not overly preachy about religion but offers that the solution to many fears and difficult situations can be found in a relationship with God.

Like most of the books I’ve reviewed by Tracie Peterson, I highly recommend House of Secrets. If you’ve not read any of Peterson’s books because you don’t like historical fiction, consider picking up a copy of House of Secrets. It’s not a “light” read, and probably not something you would want to read during the holiday season, but it will be well worth your time.

As far as a recommendation for teens, I’m on the fence mostly because of the weighty issues mentioned above and whether most teens could grasp the seriousness of the book.

Totally hard to believe that LG and DJ are TEN months old today!

DJ weighs 20 lbs 1 oz and is 27 inches long.

LG weighs 20 lbs 11 oz and is also 27 inches long.

They wear mostly 6-9 month clothes, but have begun wearing some 12 months clothes. The girls are shorter than the average 10 month old (they’re in the 15th percentile) so pants tend to be a little long.

Both girls are on the go constantly! Daddy says that they wear him out more than going to work.Their favorite activity is to chase each other or Daddy around the house or to race each other in their walkers. Our house is full of shrieks and laughter almost all day long.

On most days, DJ and LG take two naps, and they sleep for about 11 hours at night. They wake up once, and occasionally twice, for a bottle.

They’ve had their two bottom teeth since they were 7-1/2 – 8 months old and are starting to get additional teeth.

They eat 3 good meals a day of baby food, and they love eating finger food. Gerber puffs are definitely their favorite finger food.

Both girls are incredibly sweet and loving. DJ tends to be a tad more ornery (she gets that from her Daddy. ) They are full of smiles and giggles, and only cry or fuss at strangers when they are tired. (And twins attract quite a few strangers when we go shopping!)

At 10 months old, both girls are sitting, crawling, pulling up, clapping, waving bye-bye, and walking while holding on. DJ, who tends to be about 3 weeks ahead of LG, stands without assistance for about 30 seconds and has taken her first tentative steps on her own.

Their vocabulary consists of “(d)addy” and “(k)itty” as well as imitating other random words they hear. Mommy is diligently trying to get them to say “momma” but without success. They also “call” each other when they aren’t in the same room. It’s very obvious that they understand and communicate with each other. They are the best of friends!

I can’t imagine life without these two little bundles of joy! We are so incredibly thankful for the gift that God gave us!!!

When eighty-five-year-old Adele Woodmore moves to Les Barbes to be near the Broussards—and her namesake, their daughter—she wants nothing more than a comfortable, quiet life. Employing men from Father Vince’s halfway house for the homeless to do odd jobs and landscaping, she delights in the casual conversation she has with them, the fledgling friendships, and the idea that she is helping them get back on their feet.

A series of murders in Les Barbes has cast a pall over the town and, in fact, one of Adele’s handymen becomes a person of interest to the police. But Adele cares for these young men, she knows them, and continues to show them kindness in spite of her friends’ concern. And then one day a murderer walks through Adele’s defenses, sits down at her kitchen table…and they begin to talk…

Baby bathtubs. Who knew they could be so different?

We are on our 2nd bathtub for the twins. No, they didn’t wear the first one out. I just found it increasingly difficult to bathe the girls as they got bigger and more active in the tub.

The First Years Sure Comfort Newborn-to-Toddler Tub

I really liked this tub when the girls were newborns up until about 4 months old.

The sling was perfect for introducing the girls to water baths instead of sponge baths. The sling attaches easily to the tub and is simple to remove for cleaning – throw in the washing machine for a thorough cleaning. The sling fits around the baby nicely to keep her/him from tipping to one side or the other. With adjustable straps, the sling lowers for the baby to sit low enough in the tub to get used to the bump.

Once our girls were too big for the sling, they loved to kick and splash in the water. The slope of the infant side of the tub is ideal for little ones to lay back and be able to move their legs. (I’m beginning to think that LG is part frog or a future Olympic swimmer!)

However, after about 4 months, the girls really got active and I found myself constantly holding one hand on their stomachs to prevent them from sliding down in the water. If you ever tried to bathe a baby, sometimes you just need two hands – one to hold a little hand while you wash under a arm – but with The First Years tub, this was a challenge.

To me, the bump is misplaced or not high enough and fails to keep their backside in place. The other side of the tub, not sloped, is probably great but it was too straight for my girls to sit in at 4 months old.

Another plus for this tub is that it fits perfectly across a double kitchen sink. Our counter space wasn’t ideal for putting the tub on the counter so I was very pleased with how securely this tub fit in the sink.

Fisher Price 3-Stage Aquarium Bath Tub

The best thing I can say about this tub is that I love it! The shape and contour of the tub seems very fitting for infants.

Since the girls were older when we started using this tub, we did not use the sling. I’m not even sure how it attaches. And I’ve only ever used the tub in the bathtub, but it does have the insets on the bottom for use in a sink.

The water temperature thermometer on the bottom of the tub is a great feature! It’s simple to understand with smiley faces – water too cold or too hot has frowns, just right gets a smile. The thermometer is definitely useful for first-time parents or for those who don’t frequently bathe infants. No reasons to wonder if the water is too cold or too hot.

As the girls learn different things, such as pulling themselves up from a reclined position, I’m discovering that this tub still works for them. I don’t have to worry about keeping a hand on them at all times. Eyes – yes, hand – no.

Other features of this tub are a turtle and starfish toys and a hanging hook to keep the tub out of the way when not in use.

I really don’t have much else to say about the Fisher Price 3-Stage Aquarium Tub other than if you have a choice, definitely go with the Fisher Price tub over The First Years tub. There is a price difference, but you get what you pay for.

And when Boyd Cunningham asks him to watch over Audrey, Marshall is even more confused. He has no desire to be saddled with caring for this fiery young woman who is openly hostile toward him. But when Audrey seems to be falling for another man–one who has two little girls Audrey adores–Marshall realizes she holds more of his heart than he realized.
Judith Miller’s first novel, Threads of Love, was conceived when she was commuting sixty miles to work each day. She wanted to tell the story of a pioneer girl coming to Kansas and the faith that sustained her as she adjusted to a new life. Through a co-worker, she was directed to Tracie Peterson who, at that time, worked down the hall from her. Having never met Tracie, Judith was totally unaware of her writing career, but God intervened. The rest is, as they say, history. Since that first encounter many years ago, Judith has been blessed with the publication of numerous books, novellas and a juvenile fiction book. Joyously, she and Tracie had the opportunity to develop a blessed friendship. In fact, they have co-authored several series together, including The Bells of Lowell, the Lights of Lowell and The Broadmoor Legacy.

LG and DJ are my first babies so introducing them to solids was a new experience to me. To the mommies that already have a youngster before twins, some of this will be the obvious. Being a first time mom, it wasn’t to me.

Solids

We started solids at 1 week shy of 6 months. The twins began eating oatmeal cereal at 4-1/2 months, but we held off on fruits and veggies.

I had various reasons for waiting – less chance of allergies, easier on their digestion, not wanting to mess up their feeding schedule again (we had finally plateaued with the amounts and times) etc.

We didn’t waste any time trying to get them to take a spoon or like the new textures or flavors! DJ acted like a little birdie wanting a worm from the very first spoonful. LG struggled with tongue reflex for a bit but was still eager to eat!

Feeding two with a spoon is time consuming! One piece of advice I read about feeding twins is to feed them simultaneously – one bite to twin A, one bite to twin B, one bite to twin A, etc. That totally didn’t work for us in the beginning. Twin A was distracted by twin B eating and vice versa or got mad because she wasn’t getting her food fast enough.

Now that they are a little more accustomed to food, I sometimes feed them simultaneously and it is definitely faster but more challenging.

Food

Now for the most important part – the amount of food to have …

The best advice I can give – More than you think you need!

We had quite a bit stocked up but one thing I never paid attention to was how much we had of each flavor. The “rule” is to feed a new food for 3 to 5 days to check for allergies. With two little mouths, that’s 6-10 jars of one flavor. For some reason, I never considered that. That means 6 jars of peas, 6 jars of apples, 6 jars of green beans, 6 jars of pears, etc. And that’s only 3 days worth of each flavor.

When I finally comprehended just how much food was necessary, I sat down with our supply and laid out a rough feeding plan. Here’s an example of how we built up flavor variety quickly …

We had some Stage 1 or Supported Sitter foods, which are single ingredients, and we had Stage 2 or Sitter foods, which are mixed ingredients. For the first week, I fed apples for 3 days. Neither girl had a reaction so on the 4th day I added sweet potatoes. For the next 3 days, I fed both apples and sweet potatoes. Once I knew sweet potatoes were safe, I added Stage 2 Apple Sweet Potato mixed meal. So, after 1 week, the girls were eating apples, sweet potatoes, and the mixed meal.

The next week, I added a new fruit on Monday, waited the 3 days, and added a new veggie.

This plan works for us and I feel safe following it simply because neither DH nor I have food allergies or sensitivities, and we have no family history of allergies on either side. If there are allergies in your family, you should definitely follow a slower schedule for introducing new foods.

If you do notice anything suspicious that might be connected to a new food, stop feeding it and reintroduce it later on. On the 2nd day of trying carrots, LG developed a diaper rash and a slight rash on the right corner of her mouth. I wasn’t 100% convinced it was the carrots, because both girls were beginning the teething process, but I stopped the carrots and plan on waiting until LG’s rash is completely cleared up for at least a week before reintroducing carrots.

Curious about the picture? It’s actually kinda hard to tell how much food is really there. The jars are stacked 4 deep and 3 high in most cases. The pouches are about 6 or 7 deep. The tubs are 3 deep and 6 high. I’m guessing it’s about 30 days worth of food. The cereal, next to the flower, will likely last longer – maybe 2 months? I’ll let you know if my guess was right for how long this supply will last us.

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that we are still alive and going strong now that the twins are almost 7 months old. I’ve learned some things the hard way when it comes to twins, and one thing is that time to blog almost doesn’t exist.

I have a few random thoughts to share concerning the mothering of twins and wanted to let you know that in the near future I’ll be sharing reviews of various baby products that I think are necessities for twin families.

Random thought #1 – Schedules are mini-miracles, especially on days when both babies decide to cooperate with the intended schedule. I try to keep the girls on the same schedule, but our biggest issue is nap time. DJ loves to take naps and is an excellent napper (is that a word?). She sleeps for at least an hour in the morning and at least an hour or two or three in the afternoon. LG, on the other hand, is a power napper. She sleeps for 15-20 minutes and is good to go for the next 2-3 hours. Sometimes LG’s power nap overlaps with DJ’s nap, but it seems like LG falls asleep just as DJ is waking up, so this momma doesn’t get much of a break.

Random thought #2 - Diapers. The twins used Pampers in the hospital. They worked great. We tried a package of Huggies – not so great. We stuck with Pampers (about $70 per month). I don’t bother scouring the weekly sale ads for the cheapest brand of diapers. The few dollars I would save each month aren’t worth the time it takes to go through all of the ads, consider how much money is in the budget to stock up, how many coupons I have to make it a better price, etc. And besides, Pampers puts coupons in their diaper boxes so I usually have a coupon to use on the next box. If you are a mother of little twins (under a year), you probably don’t have a whole lot of time, or mental ability at this point, to do much bargain shopping. So, find a diaper that works for your babies and stick with it.

Random thought #3 – Food. I’m going to do another post about baby food for twins, but as you think about starting solids (fruits and veggies), if you think you have enough food, you don’t. I learned the very first week that my girls started eating solids that my well-stocked shelf wasn’t so well-stocked. It seemed like I blinked and food disappeared. And, I do need to say that I really admire the moms that make their own baby food. Personally, I find opening a jar much more efficient, but I really wish I had the time to make my own. I tried making bananas – fairly simple – but the 15 minutes of time it took could be spent with my babies. And considering the price of bananas versus a jar of baby food bananas … again not worth it to me. (We buy organic baby food at a discount store (often cheaper than regular baby food at the big box stores)).

Female journalists are rare in 1879, but American-born Clara Endicott has finally made a name for herself with her provocative articles championing London’s poor. When the backlash from her work forces a return home to Baltimore, Clara finds herself face-to-face with a childhood sweetheart who is no longer the impoverished factory worker she once knew. In her absence, Daniel Tremain has become a powerful industry giant and Clara finds him as enigmatic as ever. However, Daniel’s success is fueled by resentment from past wounds and Clara’s deeply-held beliefs about God’s grace force Daniel to confront his own motives. When Clara’s very life is endangered by one of Daniel’s adversaries, they must face a reckoning neither of them ever could have foreseen.

When Clara Endicott and Daniel Tremain’s worlds collide after twelve years apart, the spark that was once between them immediately reignites into a romance neither of them thought possible.

But time has changed them both.

Daniel is an industrial titan with powerful enemies. Clara is an idealistic journalist determined to defend underprivileged workers.

Can they withstand the cost of their convictions while their hearts, and lives, hang in the balance?

MY THOUGHTS

I haven’t finished reading this book but wanted to get my post up in time for the book tour. So far, The Lady of Bolton Hill is a wonderful historical fiction read. Now, please understand that my opinion might be a little clouded because this is the first book that I’ve read in the past 4 months!

I’ve enjoyed the premise of the book – rich girl during childhood befriends a poor boy because of their mutual love of Chopin and 12 years later after she’s been shipped abroad in order to prevent the friendship from blossoming into love she returns home to find that the poor boy is potentially one of the richest men in the country. And the best part is he’s an eligible bachelor.

To me, the lessons in the book come across as choices, consequences, and standing for what you believe. I could be a little off in those topics since I haven’t finished yet. I’m really tempted to skip ahead and find out what happens, but I plan to savor every word even if it takes a month!

I’ve included the author information below because she is a “new to me” author and likely to some of my readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A research librarian and associate professor, Elizabeth Camden has a master’s in history from the University of Virginia and a master’s in library science from Indiana University. She has published several articles for academic publications and is the author of four nonfiction history books. Her ongoing fascination with history and love of literature have led her to write inspirational fiction. Elizabeth lives with her husband in central Florida.

A word from Elizabeth: I am a college librarian in central Florida by day, but by night I can be found pounding out inspirational historical novels the moment the sun goes down. I love writing books about fiercely intelligent people who are confronted with profound challenges. As a rather introverted person, I have found that writing is the best way for me to share my faith and a sense of resilience with others.

As for who I am? I love old Hitchcock films, the hour before sunset, a long, sweaty run through the Florida countryside, and a glass of good wine. After spending my entire adult life on a college campus (either as a student or a librarian) I have finally been able to pursue my ultimate goal of writing professionally.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free via Christian Fiction Blog Alliance. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commision’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
