Q & A with Author Cheryl Kerr

This Veteran's Day I am thrilled to share with you the following interview with author Cheryl Kerr. Cheryl has written a wonderful book, See Ya, about the children of two different war vets. I am half way through the book and really enjoying it so far. Cheryl is a fellow Texan and a very talented writer. I am so excited to feature her here. Be on the lookout for my upcoming review of See Ya.

What inspired you to write See Ya?

Not truly knowing the man my father was when he died. How can you say goodbye to someone if you don’t know who it was that left? I yearned to figure out who my father really was, and I know other people have had similar experiences. It is such a precious moment in time when you find your answers. I wanted to capture a moment like that.

What was it like growing up with a military background?

Rough. You move a lot. You are part of a different culture. Full of transitional people, full of knowledge beyond my own and how to survive when you don’t know that world.

How much is Manda's story like your own?

Very. A sense of searching to belong, of not fitting in. Her questions are my own.

Who would enjoy this book?

I have readers ranging from middle school students to WWII veterans. It seems to have a broad appeal because so many people can relate to Manda’s search for closure. There is nothing in the book that anyone cannot or should not read.

Do you plan to write another book?

Yes, there are other stories to be told. I have been asked and have begun writing another novel about these same characters. Manda and Cameron seem to strike a chord.

What do you hope people get out of reading See Ya?

To live. To know your loved ones and yourself. I hope they realize they shouldn’t wait for these things to happen, because time can be very short. And you don’t want to miss your opportunity.

What does See Ya give people?

Room to recall their own struggles and grief. The book sets out Manda’s but allows readers to say, “This happened to me.” And then they tell me all sorts of things about their personal stories. It is amazing to have that trust.

White Picket Fences by Susan Meissner Review & Giveaway

The Janvier family thinks they are doing their niece Tally a favor by temporarily caring for her when she has nowhere else to go. Who knew they needed Tally just as much as she needed them? This is a story about families, the walls we build around ourselves, and healing.

Susan Meissner is one of my favorite authors and this book is every bit of what you would expect from her. She weaves several storylines throughout the book, which can seem daunting at first, but she ties them up quite neatly at the end. I had a bit of trouble keeping up with everything that was going on at times, but am so glad I saw this book through to the end. It was very good and I recommend it. I am sure many of you have noticed the Beauty Tip of the Day widget here on Ramblings. I've really enjoyed having the widget on the site, as I feel it has a lot of good tips to offer. My favorite so far has been No Excuses:

Holiday Gift Guide: ElliBathNBeauty Review & Giveaway

I love bath products. There are few things I enjoy more than luxurious body butter, delicious body spray, and wonderfully scented body wash. They are one of the few things I have a hard time resisting. I seem to have a compulsion to buy these things, even when I don't really need them. It never hurts to spoil yourself, right?

Some of the best products I've found are made by an Etsy shop called ElliBathNBeauty. I found them while looking for Twilight themed fragrances for Ashley. The shop carries a large variety of mouth watering scents, so even is vampires aren't your thing, you are sure to find something you will love! The owner, Lindsay sent me several products to review for y'all and I ordered a few things as well. Let me say right now that Lindsay is a doll, an absolute pleasure to work with. When it comes to customer service, this gal delivers!

From her Twilight line I was able to try the Jasper, The White Room, Edward, Rosalie, and The Cottage. Here are my thoughts on the scents I have used:

The Jasper moisturizing body butter and hair & body mist are heavenly. The scent is pretty much exactly as she described it in the store.
The White Room is another of my favorite scents. I wore the hair and body mist everyday for almost a month, that is how much I enjoyed it. It's scent takes you away to a tropical paradise. It is a nice, light, crisp scent.
Edward is the only scent I was disappointed with. In my opinion the blend of fragrances did not work well and it smelled awful on me. Lindsay tells me she is still working to get the perfect scent blended, so hopefully she will get it figured out soon so we can all enjoy the essence of this wonderful character. *I just heard from Lindsay. She says "I think I have a much better Edward version now, it's been going over well and I love it! It's a bit sweeter because I remember Bella describing his "sweet" scent. Of course it contains a more creamy Honey, softer Lilac, and a dry-down of sweet notes." She is going to send me a sample & I can't wait to try it! I'll let y'all know what I think after I receive it.*
The Rosalie scent I tried as body butter. It is a beautiful, feminine floral. You can't help but feel all girlie and sexy when you slather this on. My pal Lynette says it reminds her of "rose milk" a scent her grandmother wore. I don't know what "rose milk" smells like, but I can assure you Rosalie makes you feel like a girlie girl.
The Cottage scent came to me as whipped cream soap. Again, Lindsay's description of this is pretty much spot on. It smells floral and earthy at the same time. It honestly makes me think of a flower garden after a good rainstorm. I absolutely adore this scent!

I love that the body butter moisturizes without leaving a greasy feel. You get all that moisturizing goodness without the greasy gunk; I hate greasy feeling lotion, so this is a big favorite with me! The hair and body mist leaves a subtle fragrance, lasts a long time, and contains no alcohol, so it doesn't dry out your skin or hair. As for the whipped cream soap, it is amazing! It is amazing to wash with and makes the best shaving cream I've ever used. The scent lasts a long time and your skin feels so soft after you shower! My overall opinion on all these products is two huge thumbs up!

The Last Word Book 2: Sophie Trace Trilogy by Kathy Herman

This is book 2 in the wonderful Sophie Trace Trilogy. Sophie Trace is pretty much your average small town. This book focuses on Vanessa Jessup, police chief Brill Jessup's daughter. Vanessa returns home from college very pregnant, which sends shock waves through her family. The family deals with this unexpected news while the town's law enforcement is being hunted down by a madman. The plot of this book is fast moving, the characters very well written, and it is an overall great read. I really enjoy Kathy Herman's work, as she has the gift of creating characters you can relate to. I finished the novel quite quickly because I just has to know how things would end up. It's a great story of forgiveness, acceptance, and love. I give it two thumbs up and cannot wait for the third book! Check out the trailer below.

One of my favorite new websites is Vat 19. The call themselves "Purveyors of the curiously awesome" and that is truly what you will find there. If you can dream it up, you'll probably find it at Vat 19. If you have lots of "hard to buy for" folks on your holiday gift giving list, then you really want to check out this site.

I was thrilled when Vat 19 sent me a SkyBall to review. You know those super bouncy balls you can buy? My kids love those and never seem to tire of them. This is the same idea, well it's super bouncy anyway. The ball is about the size of a soft ball, much softer than those tiny super bounce balls, and bounce as much as 75 ft. in the air. The kids and I had a blast with this thing. Want to bounce it over your roof? No problem! We were all amazed at how high this ball would bounce! Check out the video below to see how cool these are!

Did you see the blue SkyBall in the video? That's the one we were sent to review. The kids thought it was so awesome to have the "video shoot" ball. Anyway, this ball really does make for a good time. The kids never seem to get tired of playing with it. It would make an excellent holiday gift for kids of all ages!

Have you heard of the Slanket? It's a wonderful invention, a blanket with sleeves. I am always cold, so this product is a hit with me. I can sit wrapped up in a warm blanket and still easily type, read, or whatever. I love it!

When I was a girl I loved My Little Pony. I was thrilled that these childhood favorites stepped back onto he scene when I had a daughter, as she loves them as much as I did. I cannot see one without smiling because they bring back such great memories. Does your little girl love My Little Pony too?

My Favorite Drink of the Season - Wassail Recipe

When I was a child, my Nanny would make wassail during the holidays. She would make her "grown up" version and then some just for me. Mine was pretty much just a hot spiced cider, but I loved it. Now that I'm an adult, this is the wassail I make for the holidays. It is so good and makes your house smell great!

Wassail

1 bottle dry red wine
2 cups cranberry juice cocktail
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1/3 cup lemon juice
4 cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup brandy

In a large cook pot mix all ingredients and heat until the mixture starts to bubble.

Reduce heat to simmer, and cook uncovered for 15 minutes.

Remove cinnamon sticks, pour into mugs, and garnish with orange or lemon slices.

Enjoy!

This is a wonderful novel with a story much like one you've probably heard before. Small town girl goes to the big city. She has a career, a big shot boyfriend, and pretty much all she wants put of life. When an eccentric relative's action cause her to return to her hometown, life turns upside down. This is a charming book filled with wit, romance, and a nice dash of southern flair. Complete with dogs, unusual relatives, and country boys it is almost Sweet Home Alabama with a Christian twist.

I absolutely inhaled this novel. I finished it in a day. The characters are so well written, you feel like you are reading about old friends. Although the story reminds me of some I've read before, the novel offers a unique perspective on what it means to come home. I give this one two thumbs up! Today I am thrilled to bring you my interview with Claudine Wolk author of It Gets Easier! . . . And Other Lies We Tell New Mothers. My own experience with motherhood was quite interesting. Tristen was such a laid back baby, we actually had to wake him up to eat during the night. He gave me the (completely unrealistic) idea that all infants were that easy. Then came Ashley who spent her first year scream all the time. She was quite a wake up call. I am so drawn to the title of this book because, well, does it ever get easier? Nessa: What inspired you to write this book?

CW: Motherhood changed everything for me. I was clueless after the birth of my son, going literally from the office to home with a fussy infant! As soon as I found tips from other moms, that actually worked, that weren’t in any other books, I decided that I had to put it all down in a book for the moms who came after me. It was almost a mandate - honesty, for the love of Pete, honesty! So, the book really started after the birth of my first son. My other two children were practically guinea pigs used to apply the information I had learned with my first son to make sure the success of the tips was not a fluke, and oh, yeah, we wanted more kids!

Nessa: How long have you been writing?

CW: I guess I’ve been writing for about 16 years, from the time that my son was born. I started to submit stuff much later (not unlike many other aspiring writers) about 5 years ago.

Nessa: What do you think is the biggest "lie" you were told as a new mother?

CW: I think the biggest lie I was told – actually it was more of an omission than a lie – was that a baby eats and falls asleep after he eats. Who knew that the little critters actually stay awake after they eat and sometimes even scream their little faces off? I was expecting the “Downy Baby” baby, who was peaceful and cherub-looking. I was also expecting to look just like the fully-makeuped and peaceful mom in that commercial. Reality was a bit different for me.

Nessa: What is the best piece of advice you ever received as a new mom?

CW: The best piece of advice I received as a new mom I actually read in Dr. Spock’s Baby and Childcare. Dr. Spock said that as moms we know more than we think we know. This one sentence gave me the freedom to trust my instincts and that it was OK to make decisions regarding my new family. That realization took a lot of pressure off and opened me up to try a lot of the advice I share in the book.

Nessa: What projects are you currently working on?

CW: Right now I am trying to find new ways reach new moms. I’ve come up with a new venue that I like to call “Cocktails & Conversation.” It’s a way for me to visit new moms and facilitate their sharing of stories and ideas that work for them. One mom hosts a “party” and I come, speak a bit, and get the mom-conversation rolling. It’s like “Bunco” but without the dice (or the money.) The cool thing about it is that all different moms come – new moms, pregnant moms, more experienced moms, and even women just thinking about getting pregnant. The best part is that once the ball gets rolling, the sharing is incredible. Everyone speaks and shares their concerns or the ideas that have worked for them. Moms learn that they are not alone. Everyone comes away with a smile. It exhilarating!

Holiday Gift Guide: Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery Review

Did you have an easy bake oven when you were a kid? I did and of course Ashley ended up with one when she was old enough as well. She liked it but complained because it didn't make "pretty" food. She is quite the foodie, so how food looks is a big deal to her. She loves to cook and making things pleasing to the eye as well as the taste buds is one of her favorite things. So, she was naturally thrilled when we received the Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery to review.

All it took was Ashley seeing Duff Goldman on the box to get excited. You know Duff right? From Ace of Cakes?

She just knew she would be putting out cakes every bit as beautiful as his creations in no time flat! We tore into the box and went to work. Basically you mix the cake mix up and microwave to bake. Then you make fondant, roll it and add it to your cake. Throw in some gel icing and you are looking at an edible masterpiece!

It was easy to put together, the directions were clear, and I was very pleased with this product. Ashley loved it and I did to! Toys that encourage creativity are my favorites and this set certainly does that! We give it two thumbs up.

So, keep this in mind for the special little bakers on your Christmas list. I am sure they will love it just as much as mine did!

Beautiful Mess The Story of Diamond Rio By Diamond Rio

Diamond Rio is one of my favorite country groups. They have a wonderful, unique style and some of the best harmonies in the business. As a big fan, I was anxious to read their story in Beautiful Mess The Story of Diamond Rio. It covers the band's difficult beginnings, their rise to fame, and what happened once they made it to the top. Full of fascinating information and great personal glimpses of the men behind the band, this book takes you along with the guys as they go from unknowns to stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I knew very little about the beginnings of Diamond Rio, so I found the story of how the band formed to be quite interesting. The book is written in a style that helps you be right there with them as the story unfolds. The book is informative, witty, fascinating, and at times sad. It is the story not just of the band, but of their families, their personal lives. I had no idea how many obstacles these men had to overcome while trying to make it! All in all I found it to be a fantastic read. If you are a country music fan, you will probably enjoy this book.

Thanks to a reader comment, my choice of "thriller" movie this Halloween was Charade. I'll admit it isn't scary, but it has plenty of suspense! I had never seen it and was mesmerized! I am oh so glad it was available for instant watch on Netflix. The movie has a fantastic cast; does it get any better than Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Throw in other greats like James Coburn, George Kennedy, and Walter Matthau, well you've got a hit! This gem of a film is sometimes called "The best film Hitchcock never made" and I agree 100%. The acting is superb, the plot keeps you guessing, and it is just marvelous! If you've never seen it, I highly suggest it. They just don't make movies like this one anymore.

When it was stolen in the 17th century, it is said that the idol cursed all those who would possess it. That won’t stop the brilliant and ruthless Weld brothers.

I recently had the opportunity to read a delightful children's book, The Blue Umbrella by Mike Mason. It is the story of Zac Spark's, a boy who is sent to live with his Aunties when his mother dies. He encounters a cast of unbelievable characters and is unsure who to trust. The book reminds me a lot of the Lemony Snicket books. It is a fantastic read that my children and I really enjoyed.
