Organizing Group Meets for Feb 2015 Batch70 Reunion Planning

Hello Batchmates,

We are happy to announce that we are planning to hold a Batch70 Reunion on Feb 20-21, 2015.

Please find the following as the most updated details:

A. The organizing group is headed Susan Canonizado Villafranca who is based in Australia but regularly visits the Philippines.

B. By default all those present during the initial meeting serve as members. These are Josie Sy Ang, Jing Valdelleon, Doc Luming Lo, Dorri Santos, Linda Cristobal, Abe Espiritu, Goody Esguerra, Chuchi Estanislao and Malu Domingo. Linda Cristobal will serve as Finance Officer.

C. The Batch Reunion is scheduled for Friday, 20th of February, up to Saturday, the 21st of February, 2015.

D. The 2 Day Reunion Activities will be comprised of: Day 1 - Feb 20, 2015, Dinner Dance at Mismo Music Bar and; Day 2 - Feb 21, 2015, One Day Out of Town Trip to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan.

E. As our source of funds, and through the support of Josie Sy Ang, Past District Governor of RI District 3810, the Rotary International (RI) Cash Raffle Tickets are being made available to us.

1 - Lot or 48 booklets of the RI Cash Raffle Tickets were provided to our Batch to be sold or disposed at PhP 2,500.00 /booklet. or PhP250.00/ticket. Each ticket gives the ticket holder a chance to win PhP 1,000,000.00 CASH.

F. All we need to do is dispose or sell all the 48 booklets (PhP 120,000.00), return the PhP 20,000.00 to the Rotary as their share; and we get to keep the remainder of PhP 100,000.00 which we can use to finance our Reunion Expenses (cost of food, venue, transportation, etc).

G. Tickets are now available through: Susan Villafranca, Abe Espiritu and Malu Domingo. All ticket payments will be remitted to and receipted by; disbursed and accounted for by our Finance Officer, Linda Cristobal.

RIP Batchmate MInda Tapales

It is with sadness that we note the passing away of our batchmate Minda Tapales last Wednesday night after having been discharged from the UE RM Medical Center. She was confined briefly for ovarian cancer at said hospital but relatives were subsequently advised to take her home.

This was Abe Espiritu's post at the RMCHS Batch 70 Group at fb:

"it is a very sad day... nais ko pong ipaabot ang balita na ang ating batchmate na si Minda Tapales Macarista ay sumakabilang buhay na ngayong gabi... sa lahat po ng mga tumulong sa pamamagitan ng panalangin at tulong pinansyal maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat... napakabuti po ng inyong puso kahit na si Minda ay hindi nyo personal na nakilala... patuloy po na pagpalain kayo ng ating Panginoon na nakikita ang inyong mabuting kalooban... pipilitin ko po na magbigay pa ng mga updates later... again thanks so much for all you support..."

Minda is now in a place with no pain. Godbless Minda.

A Call for Help

To Our Dear Batch70,

Our batchmate, Minda Tapales is currently confined at the UE RM Medical Center because of ovarian cancer. The doctors informed her daughter Nini that Minda would need an operation immediately. Minda needs financial support to cover her initial confinement fees including diagnostic/medical/laboratory expenses; not to mention the cost of her operation.

At this point the amount that needs to be settled immediately is in the vicinity of Php25,000.00 afterwhich, she can be transferred to the Charity Ward.

Abe Espiritu who volunteered to coordinate the Call for Help efforts, including the 2010-2012 former Batch Officers led by Manny Palafox, have so far raised P8,500.00. Today, Joe Apostol also contributed Php4K plus US$100.00. Contributions were also received from batch mates who want to remain anonymous.

Please batch mates, we would like to appeal for your assistance. Any amount that's comfortable will be deeply appreciated. Please send your assistance or pledges to Abe Espiritu. We will make sure that your support will be acknowledged properly as soon as it's possible.

Let's pray for Minda!

Friday, March 24th, promises to be another sunny day and the weather is fine.   The sky is blue, until what looks like rain clouds hovering above.   Suddenly, lo and behold it was a heavy downpour in March! What luck!   Some parts of Metropolis get flooded easily and the inevitable traffic can be so bad, the usual scenario when the ground is drenched with water.   I wonder if people will come but at the same time bursting with hope that they all will.

We have whipped up a farewell party for a special person. We didn’t have enough time to plan and prepare so I was hopeful we could pull this through, even if I considered it duck soup. And thank God we did! It turned out to be one memorable, pleasant and enjoyable despedida for that someone we were honoring, and for everyone concerned as well.

It was a good number of attendees who brought appetizing dishes, cakes, pastries, wine and soda pop. They also brought their youthful smiles, their warm and carefree selves, laughter and loads of fun.
How do you say goodbye to a person who has become such a good friend because his persona alone is endearing and likeable. Although goodbye doesn’t mean forever knowing we’ll see each other again someday, but then again, letting go of something so nice is a hard thing to do.

I was caught in my own reverie, out of hibernation mode and became sentimental about this party. I anticipated it to be something truly special for an equally special person, so he has a reason to remember us all with fondness – (:-D smile ).

Meeting Manny Palafox, Jr. 41 years later, brought me back to 1969, to a vivid scene of a party at home. He wanted to dance with me, but instead I asked him to entertain and dance with my cousin (she has polio), which he did for the rest of the evening without nary a complaint. What a kind-hearted guy!   To this day, his mere act of selflessness inspires me to strive to be better person like him.

Due to renovation being done in the Legacy Room, we used the Audio-Visual Room (AVR) for our venue. Manny’s favorite color is yellow, and the AVR was painted yellow; for me, that was like a prediction that the party was going to be a success. Abe Espiritu, Leo Valmorida and myself went there early to decorate the hall with yellow balloons, with a tarpaulin (where batchmates would later sign and write their messages), to set up a table covered with a pretty table cloth (which was later laden with delicious food), and to set up the chairs.   The flat screen TV and sound system came much later.

The honoree arrived early, bringing with him a big basket of Bico. Other batchmates started coming in, the rain wasn’t a hindrance after all.   Divin and Jimmy Juco surprised us with their presence, as well as Julio Tabije who rarely attends such occasion. The opening prayer was led by Cristy Icatar, who also co-emceed the program, followed by the welcome remarks of our newly elected president, Lorna Callanta.

After a sumptuous dinner, we started the ball rolling with a song number by the members of the Model Platoon serenading Manny with one of his favorite tunes, “The Wonder of You”.
Participants had fun playing the “Guessing Manny’s Favorites-Multiple choice” game.   Josie Absolon won this round to the question, “Who is Manny’s favorite solo artist?” – Michael Franks was the answer. Now we know.

I also fondly remember Manny in high school playing the “Sipa” while walking down the street.   So it was just befitting to include it in our entertainment. Alas, however, most participants could hardly kick the Sipa to three strokes - blame it to added years cum aging bones. (laughter here). But enthusiasm and staying young at heart is something years cannot take away from us, plus the “wanting to re-live the way we were and the fun we had “factor. Shrieks of laughter now filled the musty room, yet, no one minded the heat and humidity.

The “Flash Card” with Manny’s name and corresponding adjectives and/or nouns to describe him was a loving tribute by his batchmates headed by Dorri Santos and finished up by Cecille Cabuhat. It was a touching segment and they all showed Manny how much they appreciate, respect and like him.   I guess if you are a softie, you can get teary eyed in this portion. Surge of emotions filled my heart, because they did a really good job with their kind and loving words.

The last game was “Spelling MPJ”, Manny’s initials, by dancing the letters, which was Dorothy Faulan’s idea to include in the program. It turned out to be the most rowdy, hilarious and boisterous segment. Each one exhibited their acts, their bumps and grinds with so much zest and childlike gusto, everyone went a-gaga over it.

Giving credit to each participant like Chuchi Estanislao - we laughed at her appealing tactics; Lorna did it-ballroom style; Dorothy did the small letters thingie. And then it was Malou Domingo’s turn; she was a revelation! Her bumps and grinds tickled our funny bones. She was declared the winner! An undisputed decision.   It‘s an amusing thing to see batchmates come out of their shells and pull their hair down for gaiety’s sake and all, just to give Manny a send-off party worth remembering.

Wina Illusorio, Manny’s neighbor on Bignay Street, emailed her thoughts and anecdotes which Malou read and other short messages from batchmates abroad. Lanie Reodica related happy and memorable stories of their friendship way back on the same street.

Everyone became serious as we all gathered closely to sing the song, “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You” over Jose Mari Chan’s voice. Someone said that she almost got choked up with tears, but somehow managed to contain her feelings. For a while it was a touching scene, good thing “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” immediately followed it. We all held our glasses up high to toast and cheer the auditor who became our President (and absolutely did a good job at it), who led us to the now most cherishable Grand Reunion in February.

How do you say goodbye? You can say it in many languages: Tata Hooroo, Ciao, Auf Wiedersehen, Aloha, Adios- Hasta La Vista, Sayonara, Arrivederci, Adieu/Au Revoir and Paalam. But really for now, let me just say thank you: Arigato, Mahalo, Denkesehen, Merci Beaucoup, Muchas Gracias, Salamat – to you, Mr. Manuel Palafox, Jr, for sharing and bringing such joy to our hearts and setting good example of how a leader should be.

You made me stick it out when I was about to give up during all our strenuous and stressful Grand Reunion preparations. Your encouragement, morale boosting and sensible and sound advices, made me rise up to the challenges that beset me and turned out victorious!

Sydney is your new home now, Mr. ex-President, I’m pretty sure that she will be good to you. May she open many opportunities to you, new experiences and higher level of endeavors, to make you enjoy every minute of your life there. Seize all the possibilities which will be uniquely yours, bearing in mind that we all wish you the very best. Our prayers and love go with you to guide your path every step of the way.

Kuya Boyet, as some of us affectionately call you, here’s the song we sang and I believe it’s very appropriate for you. Carry with you all the wonderful souvenirs; may happy thoughts of our togetherness linger in your heart and promise to think of us too. You will surely be missed, but hopefully, we will see you again one day soon. Thanks a lot for the memories!

Hi Malou,

It's been a long time (over 6 months ago) when I last communicated with you. The reunion has come and gone and I haven't even congratulated you and the staff for a job well done. Well, congratulations! I heard a lot of good things from Gie and Vicky - that everybody had a blast! Vicky sent me some pics and I have been scrolling the blog site for more photos, figuring names and faces of old batch mates. I wish I was there.

I have been in regular contact with Gie and Vicky, thanks to you. We were planning to have a reunion at the end of May but due to conflict of schedules, it didn't happen. Vicky and I were supposed to see each other for lunch or dinner the last time I was in LA (the third week of June) pero hindi rin nangyari. With my short 3-day stay, I was so pressed for time helping my son pack his apartment stuff to move him to Boise, Idaho for his final 3 years of medical residency.

After unpacking boxes in my son's new apartment, I had the time to check his computer files for some family photos which I've been meaning to send you. Attached are some pics of over a year old to add to your collection. Sorry for the long wait.

Current Batch Pres Lorna Cecilia Callanta requests all batch 70 members for their kind support for the Batch 70 Bowling Team (Team C Red). Apparently, the Team needs additional funds to sustain their participation in the on-going RMCHSAAI interbatch bowling tournament.

At the moment, batch70 has only 3 players, while batch 89 has 2 which leaves Team C with just 5 players.

If you are good at bowling and possess the motivation, please join the bowling group. More importantly, if you have the CASH to spare, the team needs P6000 more or less to cover the lane fees. This amount. according to Lorna will suffice the three remaining Saturdays/games.

Tribute To Kuya Boyet (aka Manny)

I am honored to have been selected to write this tribute about someone who I consider many things to me including: Kapitbahay, Adopted Cousin, Confidant, very good friend but most of all, our outgoing Alumni Association RMCHS Batch ’70 President! You all know who I am referring to: Manuel Palafox Jr. , or Manny or as I call him Kuya Boyet.

I wish I could be there with you to honor Kuya Boyet. But due to a minor geographical detail, I have to write my tribute and I am hoping this will just be just as good. I have known Kuya Boyet since a very young and tender age. We lived next door to each other in Bignay where we were molded by our dear parents, elders and friends.

I used to borrow Kuya’s bicycle and ride down the street. Kuya Boyet, being the eldest child of his family was the Boss, the bully and the leader of his siblings. in contrast, I was the youngest of my siblings and of course, they used to bully me. Even though we were in opposite situations we became very close.

I remember spending time together, hanging out, listening to music like the Lettermen marathon, exchanging stories about friends, crushes, the latest fad and most of all I remember telling him my tales of woe about being bullied by my siblings. Kuya Boyet would always patiently and attentively listen to me. We went to the same elementary school – Quirino Elementary School in Anonas Street , Project 2, We often walked to school together and he used to criticize my bakyas and would always ask me why I have to wear bakyas to school – but when I told him that it was all my mom can provide for me, he will always have a calming face for me.

In high school, as most of us did – we started to have crushes and puppy loves. I started to get my share of admirers and there were at least one or two that would go through my Kuya Boyet to get to me. I shared with him the boys that caught my interest. And of course, I solicited his opinion about these boys which he gladly provided. I have endless fond memories of this guy – but I fear I will bore you with them!

So, Kuya Boyet – Congratulations on your upcoming extended travel to Australia. How I wish you were coming closer to the U.S. instead of further away, so we could visit more often, but I am happy for you all the same.

Most of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for leading the officers of Alumni Association of Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School Batch ’70 for the awesome work you have done for Batch reunion – I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that it was wonderful to re-connect and catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Kuya Boyet – I love you, thank you very much and my best to you and Aida on your travel.

Pictures attached was taken from my i phone as the raffle was done late after dinner and John was out getting our clothes.

Introducing someone who bears the same surname as mine but not really sure if we are related.. i have unfortunately not made any formal acquaintance with Myrna during the batch's recent four day reunion activities.. there were just too much to take care of.. (sigh) am guilty of not being able to circulate around as much as i wanted to.. again the dizzying number of things to do and many of the things were really a first.. but enough of myself..

Myrna is statuesque.. looks young for her age.. no kidding.. she bears the confidence of a well-traveled person.. and from her fb info i gathered that she is based in California.. has two children? point is, she doesn't look it.. lucky girl..

One of our recent finds as well is Ramon Panelo. During the first batch meet that he attended he told me that he found us through google; and that there was a time when he met someone from batch68 who said that our batch is "missing"..

So now Mon hindi na tayo missing - because we are all over. Our batch has a twitter account, we have a two facebook closed groups, we have an email account and YES soon we are going to have a four (4) day reunion at three different venues which we will of course publish through the social networks mentioned.

We will never be lost henceforth, unless google disintegrates along with blogger and facebook and twitter, which i think is unlikely to happen.

By the way, the guy used to be a member of the much vaunted RMCHS Model Platoon kaya pala ang tindig ay matikas!

On the more personal side, and from what I gathered from his fb profile, Mon is a Master Mariner at KJCM; he studied at Philippine Merchant Marine Academy and currently lives in Las Piñas.

I think he has attended 2 batch org meetings already and informed me that there's a chance he might have a new stint any time soon, but we're hoping to see him on Feb 3 during the Reunion Kick-Off at RMCHS.

Another Precious Find: Classmate Benigno Villanueva

Here's an email which temporarily coated my evening with nostalgic joy! Kasi ang daming classmates humahanap sa kanya and now nakita na natin sya .. and yes, this email was sent 3 days ago which I read just now...

"Dear Marilou,

Benigno now Ninoy Villanueva with Family, YEY!

Thank you for creating and managing the RMCHS1970 blog! The class pictures help me remember most of my classmates and batchmates. Caption under Class IV-1 "Where is Benigno Villanueva? ...absent during class picture taking?". I am, before reviewing the class pictures, in the same shoes confuse who were my classmates and batchmates. It does not matter now. At any rate I belonged to section 2 since second year I think, but I usually joined section 1 gigs (I cannot forget Jing's place as well). Section 2 has three doctors, Jethro Larita (orthopedics), Ernesto Cadorna (an internist in Kansas), and myself (diagnostic radiologist, Philippines).

Just to inform the batch 1970 members, particularly section 2 classmates, to know that Odon Morillo passed away due advanced liver cancer (I was there who did biopsy him).From our classmate bonding (not doctor-patient) Odon M (after being incarcerated during Martial Law) finished his AB Political Science at UP Diliman, handled a teaching job at PUP for a while, married with two sons, and most of the time worked with NGOs involved in microfinancing for farmers in the far-flung rural areas of the Visayas. Probable he got infected with Hepatitis B while in this rural work, increasing his change of developing liver cancer.

Attached is our family picture taken last Christmas (in the picture are my wife Loida, son Miguel Benigno, daughter Aisa and me; my eldest son is currently in NY, hindi lumipad dahil mahal and airfare).

Again, regards to all my classmates and batchmates. I am fond of remembering Vixi Abat, Oscar Lopez, Lex Parayno, Melchor Salantes, Mon Punzalan, Dave Juco and Divina Llamas, Aida Tolentino, Emma Geronilla...

While looking at the old class pictures, as if high school years just happened yesteryear. Nostalgic feeling. I hope I can join our batchmates and classmates physically, but likely it would be during our preparation for golden anniversary.

Hi everyone,

Another batch mate found us through Google.. and yes a lot of you wanted to know her whereabouts.. wonder no more because I got this email from Charito Moreno-DyTiapco!!

Hello Malou,
I commend your initiative in establishing this blog which I chanced upon on Google. My husband, who is an Ateneo Alumni, regularly communicates with his gradeschool and high school classmates through Yahoo and it gave me the idea to search for our old "alma mater." What I found is a well managed blog which is active and growing. I am so excited and happy to see faces of old classmates come alive before my eyes on this computer monitor, most especially my old best friend, Virginia Guevarra. Thank God to the internet! I would appreciate it if you could give me her e-mail address or telephone no. so I could get in touch with her.

I immigrated to the US in 1984 and have lived here in Albquerque, New Mexico since 1996. Before coming to Albuquerque, we have resided in Anaheim and Corona, California. I am married to Dan Dytiapco, the eldest son of the owners of "Pugad-Lawin Press" at West Point in Cubao. If I remember correctly, our school newsletter was being printed there. I have an only son who just graduated from Medical School and is currently a General Surgery intern at Harbor-UCLA.

It is exciting to learn about old classmates whereabouts and it is good to know that a few of our classmates are here in the US. There is a lot to catch-up on forty years after high school graduation. I am glad that many of you still see each other through common projects, activities and re-unions.

Again, thank you and I hope that more of us will discover this site.

On a rainy Friday, morning, December 9, 2011, Batch70 officers, together with our dear supporters from Rotary Intl D 3810 San Miguel District braved the rain to witness the formal donation turnover to RMCHS.

We missed the other Officers: VP Goody Sabasa Esguerra, Auditor Leo Valmorida, Sec Chuchi Estanislao.

Likewise, we would like to thank the School Officials headed by Principal Josefina Perlado, Admin Head Benny Valenzuela, and the rest of the Department Head Teachers for the Merienda they have so kindly prepared for everybody.
