Malaysia: Reactions to flotilla attack by Israel

Several Malaysian nationals were on board the Mavi Marmara when Israeli naval commandos raided a “Freedom Flotilla” of six ships carrying 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid. This attack by Israel has sparked indignation in Malaysia.
Khoo Kay Peng hopes that countries which reacted to the sinking of a South Korean ship last week will also condemn the flotilla attack

The attack must be condemned by the international community. If the attack on South Korean ship is risking economic sanction on North Korea by some of the most powerful nations, I hope they will react the same towards Israel and its cowardice attack.
This is a black day when a humanitarian initiative is being attacked and suppressed.

Democratic Action Party wants an all-party caucus to discuss and condemn the attack

It is most horrifying that Malaysian lives could be lost.
The all-party conference, which should be convened within 24 hours, should express the anger and outrage of Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation at the atrocity committed by the Israeli forces against the unarmed Flotilla and civilians and demand an international tribunal for such crimes against humanity

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, former prime minister and popular blogger, issued this statement

1. I am horrified at the violence employed by Israel to stop the ships from carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza. The ships are in international waters, yet the arrogant Israelis do not care to respect international laws and convention.
2. The claim that the people on the ships are carrying sharp objects is ridiculous. Are they going to fight the well armed Israeli soldiers with sharp objects?
3. Do Israeli soldiers shoot to kill people carrying sharp objects? The act is most cowardly and deserving only of brutes, not civilised people.
4. What kind of world are we living in when it allows a rogue state to use violence and killings against unarmed people on a mission of charity

Live Oak Prosecutor Fired for Speaking to Tea Party !

An assistant state attorney in Live Oak was fired Monday
after she refused to stop speaking to tea party rallies and
other groups, her boss said.

Prosecutor KrisAnne Hall asked a federal judge Friday
for a ruling that would have allowed her to keep speaking
and prevented her boss, State Attorney Skip Jarvis, from
following through on threats to fire her if she didn’t stop.

Courtroom arguments on that request hadn’t been scheduled
by Monday afternoon, when Jarvis said he fired Hall shortly
after receiving a copy of her federal complaint.

He called her a good prosecutor, who crossed an ethical line
with her speeches and radio appearances.

“You can’t take a job advocating for the state and go out and
take a position against the state,” Jarvis said.
“I advised her from my first learning of her activity that she was
free to say and do whatever she desired within the law, but she
could not do so while assistant counsel for the state.”

Hall, 40, said she spoke about the original intent of the
U.S. Constitution, smaller government, budget deficits and
Florida’s lawsuit against health care reform.
Describing herself as a disabled Army veteran, she said all
are federal issues she’s passionate about.

“I never said anything bad about the state.
I never said anything bad about Mr. Jarvis,” said Hall.
“I love being an assistant state attorney, [but] I’m not
ready to give up on my constitutional rights.”

Now instead of an injunction, she and her lawyer plan to
amend their complaint to sue Jarvis for retaliatory conduct.

“To fire someone over their political views doesn’t set well
with most folks,” said her attorney, Gary Edinger of Gainesville.

Jarvis said he first learned of Hall’s activities last month from a
constituent after she spoke at tea party gatherings in North Florida
and on a Lake City radio station.

“They were confronting me about my office being used to legitimize
what they consider to be a fringe right-wing group,”
Jarvis wrote in an e-mail attached to Hall’s lawsuit.
“I hate to do this, but I have to ask you to disassociate
yourself from these folks.”

Hall responded that she was speaking on her own time and
was careful not to be introduced as an assistant state attorney.
She said she spoke in response to a request to help educate
people about the Constitution.

Nevertheless, Jarvis responded that she was identified as an
assistant state attorney and had to stop. After several more
e-mail exchanges, she replied that he was being unfair.

“Even when I was in the military, restrictions on my constitutional
rights were never so unreasonable,” she said. “...
I fought for these rights in the military, and as a sworn officer,
I am sworn to defend them.”

The e-mails were followed by a letter from Edinger to Jarvis,
warning about a potential lawsuit and challenging the state
attorney’s view that Hall’s activities were in any way disruptive
to the State Attorney’s Office.

Jarvis responded by letter, also attached to the lawsuit,
noting that his assistants serve as appointed representatives
of the state and do so knowing their outside activities have boundaries.

“She has been given a directive and now must decide whether her
desire to speak outweighs her desire to retain my appointment,”
Jarvis wrote May 10. “It is her decision.”

The issue balances free speech rights and a public employer’s
desire to protect the integrity of the workplace, according to labor
and First Amendment lawyers contacted by the Times-Union.

Lawyer Ed Birk said an elected state attorney can weigh whether
an assistant’s comments impair the public’s perception of the office.

“There’s a legitimate interest of the state attorney to operate the office
in a way that instills public confidence, so there are limitations he or
she can put on the assistants,” said Birk, who has several media clients.
“The rule is generally does the employee’s public conduct interfere with
the proper operation of the office.”

In a small community, Birk said, prosecutors often are easily recognizable,
and people will naturally associate an assistant state attorney’s public
comments with the office she works for.

But labor lawyer Tad Delegal said Hall has a legitimate First Amendment
claim if she was speaking on her own time and her expressed viewpoints
weren’t associated with her official duties.

Pakistan: Netizens Protest The Blanket Ban Of Facebook And Other Sites

After the ban of Facebook, Youtube and several other sites in Pakistan, the netizens of the country are outraged by the decision. It all started when Lahore High Court ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block the entire Facebook.com domain in Pakistan till 31st May in response to a petition seeking a ban on Facebook, which hosted the Draw Mohammed Day page created by some users.
In Pakistan this issue has been hijacked by vested groups to gain political mileage. The pro ban campaigners are spreading rumors that Facebook will lose a huge amount of money because of this ban which is not true.
Many of the netizens explained that their standpoint is to protest the blanket ban but they do not support the promotion of blasphemy as in the said Facebook event. However they felt that with that ban the government has taken their right to protest against these offensive cartoons.
It might be noted here that Saudi Arab and UAE also banned the specific page for the same reason - not the whole Facebook domain.
Ahmad Nadeem at Pak Tea House calls this ban “a death of collective wisdom“:

While Pakistan Federal Union Of Journalists (PFUJ) appreciates the punishments of 2.5 million for someone else fault, what will be its reaction if Hindu minority demands ban over ‘cow slaughter’, will they be treated in same manner as constitution guarantees ‘equal treatment before the law’?

Usama Khilji at Chowrangi explains why should there be no ban on Facebook in Pakistan:

The Facebook event ‘Draw Muhammad Day’ indeed came as an offensive shock not only to Muslims around the world; but to all those who believe in tolerance and respect of others’ beliefs.
In Pakistan, the courts reacted by blocking access to Facebook on May 19, and to YouTube on May 20, owing to the presence of blasphemous material on these mass sharing and communication portals.
The Facebook event has been made by a private Facebook user, and is not endorsed by the Facebook administration. The event can only be seen if searched for, or if one is invited to it.
Another movement titled ‘Boycott Facebook on May 20’ was also initiated that encouraged users not to use Facebook on May 20 in protest of the ‘Draw Muhammad Day’ event. This was a viable option as users could boycott the page upon their own discretion, but a ban on access to page in the entire country becomes too imposing and borders draconian.

Faraz Rana, a lawyer based in New York provides this logic that Muslims should not react so vehemently on this issue:

Depictions of the Prophet (pbuh) are banned in Islam so people (presumably, Muslims) don’t idolize the images. The lawyer in me will tell you that a non-Muslim drawing a similar image, especially in jest, will not violate that rationale. Nor will Muslims ever confuse a cartoon with a serious depiction.

The blogger also asserts that it is not the duty of the authorities to dictate what is morally acceptable to the population of Pakistan.
Cafe Pyala asks:

Why, oh why, does everything in Pakistan boil down to banning this or that?

The blogger is of course not a ‘draw Muhammad' type freedom of speech fan either:

Why? Because I personally think it is entirely hypocritical. There are laws in many parts of Europe for example [..] which make any questioning of the scale of the massacre of Jewish people during the Nazi era, a jailable crime. You simply cannot even say anything that goes against officially sanctioned history and a number of people have been jailed for writing books that have been deemed to be a denial of the Jewish Holocaust. There are also laws (in Europe) that make blasphemy a cognizable offense, with the caveat that blasphemy is considered to be only against Christian beliefs.

The recent events regarding the Facebook page also raised eye-brows. By the 21st of May, 2010 the controversial page no longer appeared in Facebook. It was subject to criticism by some group and they explained that they had nothing to do with the removal. However on Saturday the page was up again with explanations that one of the moderators deleted the page after his account was hacked.
People are questioning that such an offensive page full of hateful comments remains without moderation while many other pages are being removed quoting violation of Facebook terms.
Saad Warraich at Teeth Maestro tells how he tried to test Facebook by creating a page named ““H | T L E R”. The page was soon disabled by the Facebook administration quoting ‘violation of Facebook Regulations’. To test how Facebook values freedom of speech, the “Everybody Draw Mark Zuckerbergs Mother” Facebook page was deleted only after 18-likes so it seems freedom of expression ends much closer to home.
Jehan Ara at In The Line of Wire writes that instead of speaking up in a civilized fashion Pakistan authorities are acting in a bizarre way:

Instead we do what people have come to expect from us. We stifle our own voices by banning a social networking site where 2.5 million Pakistani could have been heard. We hide our head in the sand like ostriches. We react like little children do – closing our eyes and pretending that if we don’t see it, it doesn’t exist.

Jehan Ara expresses her feelings with this poem:

To decide what is offensive to me
And to deactivate my membership if i so wish
Or to counter the offenders with my own viewpoint.
Then why the blanket ban of so many sites?
And why the nasty & disgusting threats
Against those who condemn the offensive page
But want the right to deal with it in their own way?

Iran: Two Bloggers and Student Leader on Hunger Strike in Prison

Two bloggers and one leading student activist - deprived of their pen and blogs in an Iranian prison - are now using a hunger strike to protest prison conditions and defend their rights.

The student is Majid Tavakoli, a leading human rights activist, and the two bloggers are Hussein Ronagh Melki, and Koohyar Godarzi.

Hussein Rongah Melki (also known as “Babak Khoramdin”) was one of the key cyberactivists behind Iran Proxy against web filtering. He used to blog about [fa] about human rights and civil society.

When Tavakoli was arrested in December, he was photographed in women's clothing by the authorities as an attempt to humiliate him. As an expression of support, countless Iranians photographed themselves dressed in hijab and replaced their Facebook profile photos.

The last post in Kouhyar Godarzi's blog in April 2008 calls on readers to help stop an execution.

After the contested Iranian presidential election in June last year, the Iranian government quelled protests and arrested hundreds of political and civil society leaders, including human rights activists, bloggers and journalists.

Majid and Hussein began their hunger strikes on May 23 from solitary confinement. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, news of Majid Tavakoli's hunger strike has caused human rights activists and intellectuals in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, to announce their own solidarity hunger-strikes.

Iranian blogger Sight writes [Fa]:

Stop your hunger strike Majid. I am not deserving of you to sacrifice your life for me. If you would not be here, I do not want the Spring. Stay with us Majid, stay.

Marjan Tehran writes [Fa]:

Majid should not be forgotten. From the moment he came to the university until he was arrested, he struggled {for freedom] now it's his friends and campaigners' turn to do their best and not to forget him.

Iranian authorities have jailed several bloggers in recent years, including Hossien Derakhshan who also still remains in prison.

Omid Reza Mir Sayafi, a 29-year old Iranian blogger and journalist died in Evin Prison in Tehran on March 18, 2009.

Our Vision

Our vision is to connect people with communities in need. We do this by supporting the work of local community organisations in countries through the placement of international volunteers.

Our Beginnings

The Global Volunteer Network (GVN) was launched in December 2000 by Colin Salisbury, its Founder and Executive Director, after spending time volunteering in Ghana, West Africa. While he was there he saw the tremendous difference volunteers could make in helping local organisations achieve their goals. Upon returning to New Zealand he spent some time researching the different volunteer organisations around the world and was amazed at how expensive and limiting many programs were in terms of volunteer opportunities.

Oil spill disaster in Singapore

Last week a Malaysian-registered tanker collided with a bulk carrier in the Singapore Strait causing some 2,000 tonnes of crude oil to spill into the sea. The oil slick has affected the marine life in the coastal areas of Singapore.
A facebook page was created - Singapore Changi East Oil Spill – to monitor and document the disaster and to call for volunteers in the cleanup drive. Lim Wei Ling posts this status update on her facebook page about what she witnessed in one of the affected beaches of Singapore

Was at Tanah Merah with a friend yesterday. The impact area is actually quite large. Also, some globules of oil have already sunken and rolling on the sea floor. Marine creatures there were lethargic due to the lack of oxygen in the waters. Dead and struggling creatures were also seen…sad. However, we saw plenty of sand stars…they seem to beholding up better =)

Musings from the Lion City thought the “strange smell” in Singapore last week came from a forest fire

Yesterday at around 1pm, I smelled something strange. It smelled like something between drying paint and something burning. Since it was a very hot day yesterday, I thought it was a forest fire somewhere.
With our busy waterways and all the ships docked at our ports due to the economic slowdown, I fear this may not be the last time I smell this.

Wild Shores of Singapore asks netizens to document the threatened marine life of Singapore

A sense of deep helpless outrage is what I feel as the oil spill affects the marinelife on our shores. I just heard that the spill has hit Chek Jawa as well as Changi beach between Carpark 6 and Carpark 7.
It's impossible to save all the creatures. What should a shore lover do about the situation?
It is wonderful to see large numbers of volunteers wanting to do something about the situation.
But ‘cleaning' sea creatures is almost impossible to do without stressing them. And once the oil clogs gills, the animals are probably doomed even if the oil is cleaned off externally. And if we want to ‘clean' marine life, we need to use seawater.
The most beautiful and delicate of marine creatures are impossible to wash or relocate quickly: hard corals, sea anemones, sea fans. Some animals that don't seem worthy of 'saving' such as worms, are actually among the important elements of the shore ecosystem, forming the base of the food chain.
So what is a shore lover to do?
In my opinion, we should document as much as we can. Focusing not just on the distress and death to marine life, but also the amazing diversity life on our shores (from worms to fishes, corals to seagrass) and how the spill is affecting them.

As we reached the shore, the pungent gas fumes fill the air! Making it a bit hard to breathe. I came prepared with a mask and tied a piece of towel around. It was much better but still a fade amount of the fumes can be smelled!
On the high shores, we see signs of the oil stains on the sand.
Sigh…..it is just heartbreaking seeing so many dead marine creatures! Hopefully the oil spill can be cleared soon and that the shores can recover once again!

The oil spill has apparently hit our shores despite earlier comments that it might vaporise before reaching land. The argument was being a light crude, the spill could vaporise easily

…what were the people manning the sea traffic doing, or more more pertinently, NOT doing to prevent this collision? Like the people manning the Control Tower in an airport, the people manning the seaport have just as heavy a responsibility to make sure things like this do not happen.

Jerry Fulton Cantrell (born March 18, 1966 in Tacoma, Washington), is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known for his work with the grunge/metal band Alice in Chains, as lead guitarist, backing and co-lead vocalist, and co-lyricist. He has written or co-written every song in the Alice In Chains catalog except for "Queen of the Rodeo", "Hate to Feel", "Angry Chair", and "Head Creeps". He performs lead vocals on his solo projects, and is part of Alice in Chains' harmonizing dual-vocal style. He resides in Los Angeles and spends time on his family ranch in Oklahoma.
