We are finding God leading us down new, uncharted paths for us, and it is an exciting place to be! In our last e-Newsletter, we shared with you that we felt the Holy Spirit putting on our hearts that the time to move into a new location and a new sphere of influence was upon us. Since that time, we have proceeded in faith, "pushing on doors", so to speak, seeing which ones God would open and which ones He would close.

It's been encouraging to see the hand of God in divine appointments with people He has brought into our path and circumstances and opportunities arise that could only come from His hand. Following a scouting trip to Northeastern Arizona along with much prayer and confirmation, we fully believe that we are being called to move to Show Low, Arizona, to open up our home to abused and neglected Native American children, as well as to work with children on the Navajo, Apache and Hopi reservations, God willing.

In some ways, it comes as no surprise that God would bring us back to an area where He directed us to become involved at the very onset of ministry with Kingdom Flight. There is a huge, desperate need for loving care in the lives of these children, and we look forward to seeing the healing hand of God on these childrens' lives, releasing them from darkness and bringing them into His marvelous light. Show Low is centrally located in this area between the Navajo, Apache and Hopi reservations, allowing close proximity to several different potential ministry sites as well as our children's home. One specific prayer request would be that God would show us the exact home He has for us, with plenty of room to take in the children He brings to us. It is our hope to make this move in time to begin active ministry when school starts up in the fall, but that is entirely up to God's guidance and provision.

Una Esperanza, our children's shelter in Juarez, Mexico, is still very much in our hearts, but the out-of-control crime in that area specifically and in Mexico as a whole has made ministry by Americans a nearly-impossible task at the present time. Our prayer has always been to see God raise up local leaders who would oversee the day-to-day ministry to the children of Una Esperanza, and we trust Him to do that. Please keep that little oasis in the desert in your prayers. It has always been God's ministry center, not ours, and we trust Him to continue to show Himself strong to our loved ones.

As we walk in faith, pursuing this move to Show Low, we ask for your prayers and participation in our calling to share the good news of Christ. Although the location may shift, the goal remains the same - to love children in the name of Christ, attempting to demonstrate His love that changes lives and gives hope, and bringing them to know Him as their Savior. This is a huge step of faith for us on every level, but we are confident that as we follow His leading, He will provide the resources, strength and wisdom as they are required.

Expecting Great Things From God...

Harnessing all my random thoughts after a mission trip is always a challenge - they seem to be random observations and ideas to mull over, then God slowly brings them all into focus and the overall impressions hit home as He gives insight. This last trip was no exception to this pattern.

We felt the many prayers for our protection all week, despite the schemes of the enemy to distract or de-rail us. Both the US and the Mexican borders were much tighter security than ever before, which was an encouragement. The Mexican soldiers are serious about their jobs, yet every one we encountered both at the border and in Juarez were also friendly and professional. We were awakened at our hotel one night by the police, who had caught some one trying to break into our truck, but praise God, they were caught and were unable to take anything from the truck. We also had a strange experience on the remote highway between Una Esperanza and the border where a car sped up to us, swerved around us and then slammed on the brakes, but we thank God for Brad's quick reflexes and we were able to get around them without having to stop. We know beyond any doubt that God was at work, and that the enemy was not happy about it, but God's will prevailed in each circumstance.

The children were so encouraged and just reveled in the love and attention while we were there. Steven and Julie and two of their kids joined us for the week, and were able to love on kids and share Bible stories with the children. They also brought baseball equipment, which led to many great baseball games in the dirt! We know that God has not forgotten these children, and it was a privilege to remind them of that. We thank God for His guidance and protection, and we will continue to be seeking Him as to how this aspect of ministry is fleshed out in light of the current environment in Juarez, and in Mexico in general.

We have been reminded that our ministry to the Tarahumara and at Una Esperanza is a long-term commitment, and that the impact we desire to see will perhaps take many years to show what some would define as "success." We're reminded of Hebrews 11, the "Hall of Faith" where we learn that some who walked in faith did so, never seeing what had been promised in their lifetimes. Reaching the Tarahumara will require many years of pouring out our lives and hearts to these children who will grow into adults and be impacted by the Word of God. In a society that places such a high value on instant gratification and is so result-driven, we have to be reminded that it's not one big bang with a sudden solution, it's day after day after day of being faithful to what God has called us to do with Him that will produce fruit that will remain (John 15:16). Our primary calling is to love these children and demonstrate Christ to them as we tell them that they can know Him as their Savior. However, simply sharing this information will have no lasting effect in their lives if we do not spend our lives living out that love to them.

One of those children we love as our own is Alma, a 10-year-old girl who was with us at Una Esperanza last week, giving and receiving hugs, and just hanging out with us each day. Alma asked Jesus into her heart during our Christmas outreach two years ago, and we have seen the love of Christ at work in her through her dealings with other children as well as the staff. She has such a tender and sweet disposition, although her outward behavior would be more in line with what some would call "a bull in a china shop." She frequently shows up with a skinned knee from falling off her bike or a bruise from playing on the playground.

When we returned from Mexico to California, we received an e-mail from our new friend in Juarez, informing us that Alma had been involved in an accident at her home where she had climbed up on a roof to get a frisbee and the wall crumbled beneath her. She was taken to a hospital in Juarez and was in a coma, and her parents were told that she was going to die from internal bleeding. Because we do love Alma like a daughter, this news absolutely broke our hearts and we have been praying for Alma each day, that God would do an absolute miracle and that if there is any chance that God will use her to bring others to Him, that He will spare her life and heal her. We know that God knows what is best and we trust Him in that, but we will also continue to intercede on her behalf, asking for God to show Himself strong and to raise her up. Yesterday, we were encouraged to hear that she is breathing on her own, off the ventilator, even though she is still in a coma. We praise God for this good news, and are continuing to pray that God would be glorified in what many would see as a hopeless situation. Her parents, Rosy and Francisco, are dear friends, and our friend Raquel visited with them yesterday and was able to pass along our love and encourage them that many, many people are praying for Alma and for them. We do ask for your prayers as God brings Alma to mind.

I know this has been a lengthy post-trip report, but there is a lot going on and we have much to consider as we continue to follow Christ in this adventure. He is good, and we are encouraged to see His hand at work, but it is not simple right now. As I was reading this morning, I came across the quote from William Carey at the beginning of this post, a missionary to India who was used mightily by God in India, but who also knew much resistance and difficulty in ministry in a foreign land. It's encouraging to remember that we serve the same God, who can and does do great things.

We Are His Hands Reaching Out To The Least Of These...

I've seen Jesus this Christmas. Much like the dirty, dusty stable where He chose to take on human form over 2000 years ago, He came in human form to another dirty, dusty shelter where the poorest of the poor live, to show His love and to make a way for us to know eternal life through His greatest gift. This time instead of coming in one human form as God Incarnate, His Spirit filled 18 wonderful people who were His hands and feet to the children of Kilometer 33.

I saw Jesus swing kids around, give them caballito (horsey) rides, polish fingernails, play basketball with boys, hold little girls, feed the hungry ones, hold the crying ones, sing with them, and sit and read the Bible with them. I saw Him considering others as more important than Himself and serving them with every ounce of His energy. I would encourage you to follow this link to our photo gallery from our Christmas event and see the love of Jesus in action. You will be blessed.

We saw God's hand at every turn. He provided many wonderful toys for the children through people who were prompted by His spirit and obeyed. We were able to hand out Barbies to each girl that attended the event, in addition to many wonderful baby dolls, many cars and soccer balls to the boys, and each child was given a gift bag of goodies in addition to a large gift. They heard the real meaning of Christmas, and they were challenged to have hearts of integrity toward God. They were fed and clothed. Above all, they were loved.

One of the biggest blessings we received was when some of the children from the shelter performed dances set to praise music for the team. In a year when there were times we questioned whether the ministry could even survive, we saw the fruit of Una Esperanza, and that it is beginning to grow in depth as well as numbers. To see our little ones praising God in dance was beautiful. Several of our teenage girls also prepared some songs and I was brought to tears by God's goodness, knowing that three of these four teenagers had come to know Christ as their Savior in the last two months. The ladies also showed off their culinary skills for the team with a salsa-making contest, which the team bravely took part in as the taste testers. No reports of sickness to this point... :)

We just want to say thank you to the many people who held us up in prayer. We felt the angels all around us. We knew we were covered, and we are truly appreciative. We are grateful for the people who enabled us to pull off this event financially. It's always a very costly event, but God always provides. We are so grateful for the college students from Iowa State, New Mexico State and Hardin-Simmons University that came and poured themselves out in service and in love, for the families that made this their Christmas and demonstrated the love of God to others in front of their own kids. We prayed for Jesus to be seen by all, and we believe He was. We know He showed up in each of the team members that came to Juarez this year, and we believe His presence will continue to change lives as a residual throughout the year.

Christmas Treasures

We're getting ready to head down to Una Esperanza for our annual Christmas outreach in a little over a week, and it's all a little different this year. We're looking forward to seeing God's hand at work, like we do every year, but the circumstances all seem different.

We're collecting the gifts for the kids, which God is providing through wonderful, compassionate people that are responding to His leading. That's the only way to explain it this year. With the US economy in a not-so-great state, many people are not reaching out, including many churches that are having their own financial crises. It's just what it is this year. Due to the drug wars in Mexico, many people are concerned for their safety and not wanting to take that risk this year. In past years, we've had as many as 50 people volunteering for this outreach - this year we only have about 8 confirmed. We've had many thoughts of canceling the event this year, which is what most ministries that work in Mexico are doing this year, but God has laid on our hearts that it is still in His heart to reach these kids, regardless of what we see around us.

Mexico is indeed a very dangerous place right now, and Juarez in particular. Depending on the source, there have been between 1300 and nearly 2000 murders in Juarez in 2008, nearly all related to a drug cartel war, and it's getting uglier, more brutal. It's not in the US news much, but it's very real to our kids. Mutilated, headless bodies are turning up on elementary school playgrounds. Gangs are threatening to hurt children if teachers don't hand over their Christmas bonuses. Kidnappings of store owners are becoming common place.

Fear is a very real, very raw emotion in Kilometer 33 as well as the rest of Juarez. There is no sense of security from the law, as the government is under seige by these same cartels. In the midst of this, we MUST bring the hope of Jesus. We believe that's where He would be (and is going to be) in the midst of this Christmas season. His perfect love has to be what casts out the fear. Toys may be just toys in some instances, but this year, they are bringing hope and love, that these kids have not been forgotten, that God has not abandoned them in the middle of all this.

We are so grateful for all of you that have responded in whatever way you can, and we ask you to continue to pray for God's guidance and provision as we press forward. We ask you to pray for protection while we are down there, from about the 15th of December to the 22nd. We ask you to pray that God's hand would be so evident to each child, each person involved in this outreach. We pray that God would lift some of the heaviness in the hearts of the people during this time, that they can be reminded that God loves them and that He has not left them, that they are His Christmas treasures for which He gave His very own Son in exchange.

The Value of a Life

I've been thinking about the value of a life a lot lately. By what standards do we measure the value of a life? By what we can see? By how it affects us or benefits us? By one's bank account? By human accolades?

In addition to the everyday ministry focuses associated with Kingdom Flight and our Una Esperanza ministries, I've had a lot going on in my family of origin over the last several months. My dad has been in serious need of a kidney transplant for quite some time now and has been on a transplant list with UCLA Medical Center, undergoing dialysis four times a week for many months now. Now, it's all good and fine to be on a waiting list for a cadaveric kidney, but it's another thing to really think about the fact that someone will have to die in order to get that kidney. It has made for some soul-searching while I've been praying that God would provide a kidney so that my Dad will live. At 3:00 AM this past Sunday, my parents got the call that my dad was the match for a kidney that had just come available, so we headed up to UCLA and he had the transplant operation. He came through the surgery and is recovering well, but it really set my brain in motion considering the person who had provided a life-giving organ for my father.

Prior to the surgery, the surgeon gave us as much information as he could about the donor. Honestly, it wasn't a real pretty picture. I won't go into all the details here, but this man didn't have a lot of value that would be measured by worldly standards - no family ties, a questionable drug history, a questionable cause of death. Who knows if anyone will even miss him. Maybe if I had seen him on the street, I wouldn't think too much of him. But now, the fact that he lived makes a world of difference to my dad and to Mr. Keller, who received his other kidney.

One of my sisters, Traci, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in early August, underwent surgery, and is now currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Her prognosis is very good, although the present treatment is not pleasant. Once again, when you're faced with a potential loss of life, you value it a whole lot more. You're willing to do anything, pay any price to keep it, even subjecting yourself to pain and discomfort.

About the time Brad and I started Kingdom Flight, we read a little book that forever changed our outlook on life, the value of life, and the focus of our lives, The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The basic premise of the book is that as followers and representatives of Christ, we are to live our lives with an eternal perspective. If eternity is a timeline that stretches out endlessly in both directions, backwards and forwards, then our entire lives can be summed up in a dot on that timeline. Everything we've ever done or accomplished, everything we have poured into our lives. He makes the point that most people, and even most Christians, give ourselves filling up that dot on the timeline with stuff that has absolutely no value, accumulating things for ourselves, building ourselves up, and then at the end of our lives, we're still just a dot on the timeline. What can truly give our lives value is when we spend our lives, our finances, our time investing in things that have eternal value.

As I read the Bible, I'm more and more convinced that Christ didn't call us to concentrate on ourselves and our needs, but the needs of others. That is one of the strongest convictions we have as a ministry. Every day we have to see the value of the lives placed before us through the eyes of Christ. Each dirty little child is invaluable to Christ, so they must also be so in our eyes. We're constantly asking for the eyes and heart of Christ, to value the ones the world would say have no value. One way to have the mind of Christ is to lay down our lives and our "rights" for the redemption of others. And there is always a cost. I was reminded of that anew with my dad's surgery on Sunday.

Another book I'm currently reading is Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Once again, highly recommended. It's just reminding me of who God is and who I am, and that anything less than giving my very all to Him is an insult. It's all about Him, not me. I was reading Matthew 10 yesterday, and Jesus minces no words in telling his disciples how tough it is to follow him. Why do we think it should be easy in 2008?

I'm in awe of how much God loves us and values us, even paying the highest price to redeem us, instilling great value where there was none merited. I want to live this life, this dot on the timeline, spending myself for things that will last, not what will burn away when my days here are over. I want to value what God values, to have His mindset, to love as He loves.

God Is Good...

We didn't see the rainbows in these pictures when we initially took them, but we feel they are indicative of what God did at Una Esperanza this week. There were storms to weather, but God turned it all for good, and those little rainbows were treasures of hope for the days to come.

God honored all the prayers for clear communication and breakthroughs, and we are grateful to God for softening hearts and establishing unity once more. Once we got past the staff "stuff" we had to address, it was wonderful to see how God moved among the children through the Bible lessons, sharing times and the feedings.

The children were a lot thinner than they have been in the past, and you could see the physical toll it has taken on them with the ministry center being shut down for a few months. The economic hardships in Mexico as well as the crime sprees in Juarez have made it even more difficult for their parents to provide any food for them, and they were so glad to be fed every day we were there, and were so happy to know they were loved and were not forgotten.

I think the highlight of all the many blessings throughout the week was a water baptism service we held Friday afternoon in which about 20 kids that have received Christ as their Savior, either that day or in the past year or so, were dunked in our blow-up pool. Our son, Noah, bravely led the pack as he knelt in the pool and publicly stated that Jesus is his Lord. What a wonderful time it was to see child after child going in the pool (which got a bit more dirty with each child!) and affirming their decision to follow Jesus.

We know that these children are the fruit that God has promised, fruit that will remain (John 15:16), and we praise God that He can bring life out of any situation. We have been praying for the salvation of all of these children, but it was particularly joyful to see our friend, Carolina, come to accept Christ as her Savior. She's been a part of our ministry from the beginning, but has been a tough Tarahumara to crack in regards to choosing Jesus.

Never ones to waste an opportunity, following the baptism service, we turned the pool into a much needed hair-washing party, and much fun was had by all.

We are so grateful for the prayers that were lifted on our behalf for blessings, breakthrough, safety and discernment. We truly felt the weight of all these prayers, and we thank God for His provision in each circumstance. Juarez is still a dangerous place, as is all of Mexico right now, but it was wonderful to see ground taken back in Christ's name and light being established again in the midst of darkness. These sweet little faces make it all worthwhile, and we look forward to all that God will do in the lives of these children to bring forth His kingdom.

Calling All Prayer Warriors...

We'll be heading down to Una Esperanza Juarez this coming Sunday, 8/24, and we would love to have your prayer covering. Juarez has become a very dangerous city, in that there have been roughly 800 murders since January of this year, and some of them have been in close proximity to our shelter. This is primarily a war between drug cartel lords and the government, but theses killings and the accompanying tensions are taking a toll on the entire country (over 2000 killed nation-wide in this battle), as many innocent bystanders have been killed or injured, including many children. It seems to us that the entire country is under a cloud of spiritual darkness, and the eye of the storm is over Juarez itself.

We believe that there is truly war in the heavenlies underway for this area, and along with the fear and malice in the air, there is also a sense of spiritual oppression and deception that has been poking up its head and messing with believers that are not well-grounded in their faith. As a result of this, we'll be dealing with some serious staff issues while on this trip and we're praying to speak both truth and love into these lives. We pray that God's truth will expose the lies of the enemies and that hearts will soften to follow Christ rather than to exert self-promotion.

For months, God has been impressing II Chronicles 20 on my spirit - a situation where there was no earthly way that God's chosen people would prevail, but God gave them specific instruction to stand firm, praise God, and watch Him fight the battle for them. I encourage you to read the chapter and be amazed at what God can do. We have been waging this war through prayer for many months, but we feel God leading us to address it in person at this time, so we head out Sunday. We are scheduled to be there until Saturday, 8/30.

We know that we are heading into a battle zone that is largely under the control of the enemy right now, but we have peace because we know that God will go before us and that the battle is truly His, not ours. We would ask for your prayers for wisdom, protection, discernment, clear communication between different languages, and a break-through that would glorify God and lift up His name in that region. We know that the eternal lives of the children of Kilometer 33 and of Una Esperanza specifically are the treasures at stake, and they are worth the struggles. The enemy would love nothing more than to destroy the ministry of Kingdom Flight and Una Esperanza, but we are in God's hand, and He will make the determination of what is accomplished through this ministry, not the enemy.

Ministry Update

We’ve been going all out over the past few weeks with the Una Esperanza O.C. Kids ministry here in Orange County, California. Summer is when we typically have our hands full here in California and in Juarez, Mexico at the Una Esperanza children's shelter. We normally spend one week out of each month at Una Esperanza-Juarez and then return to our home base here in California to tend to the administration end of the ministry, and our focus turns to the local Una Esperanza O.C. Kids ministry.

During the school year we only have these local kids on the weekends, but the summer months afford us the opportunity to spend a great deal more time discipling these kids. We take them to church each week throughout the year, but during the summer months we’re also able to take them to a local beach for Bible studies, and our home is generally filled each weekend with these kids. It’s a real blessing watching some of them grow in their faith as a result.

Giving is typically down during the summer months, and this year is no exception. For this reason, we have not been able to go to Una Esperanza-Juarez in a while. We still have some staff issues to deal with in Juarez, so we do hope to get back out there soon. We’re confident that God will work everything out in His timing.

August will mark the one-year anniversary for us without an aircraft to use for our mission flights, and we just found out that the commercial airline we’ve been using this past year is going out of business September 1st. Its easy sharing the praise reports when things are going smoothly, but sharing the tough stuff can be difficult, to say the least.

Even though we don’t always see God's hand at work during our difficulties, we’re doing our best to stand in His goodness, His faithfulness, and His love in this and every situation. Please know that we covet your prayers. Please pray that God would be glorified through Kingdom Flight and that we would be faithful in all that we do.

If We Are HIS Hands, Why Aren't We Reaching?

This past week we gathered up our Una Esperanza O.C. Kids and took them to a Vacation Bible School (VBS) at a local church. There were about 250 kids at this particular VBS and our racially diversified group of mostly Latino kids stood out quite a bit amongst the sea of predominantly blond-haired and blue-eyed kids in attendance. I found this to be a bit disheartening, considering the rather large Latino community in the vicinity of this particular church.

The idea for the Una Esperanza O.C. Kids ministry came about after we led a group of children during a sponsored VBS outreach from another church to this very same community some three years ago. Back then, the church we were attending sent an outreach team into this area offering free sponsorships to their upcoming VBS. The response was overwhelming, and we ended up leading the entire group of sponsored kids during the event. They were so spiritually hungry and receptive to learning about Jesus that we decided to establish the Una Esperanza O.C. Kids ministry for these kids.

We do not presently have any particular church that we call home, and the main reason for us is that we’ve been having difficulty finding a church that seems to live out the biblical model for the church. We believe that the church is here to glorify God primarily through prayer and worship, for training and equipping the saints through sound teaching, and to challenge each follower of Christ in their local body to reach a lost world around us with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We’ve found plenty of churches that focus on one or two of these, but surprisingly, we can’t seem to find one in our area that does them all!

It seems as though the great commission of going forth is the one that often gets lost and the local church itself becomes the end-all to the Christian experience by focusing on numerous events and programs. We live in a world where the vast majority of people around us are lost! Shouldn’t we who call Jesus Lord be living with a sense of urgency for reaching them?

God has not only brought these Una Esperanza O.C. Kids into our lives, but He has also given us immeasurable joy through knowing these kids. The relationships that we’ve developed with these kids are priceless! They each have their own unique personalities and gifts, and it’s an incredible blessing to watch them grow in their faith! We’ll be spending a great deal of time with these kids during these summer months. We’ve already begun our twice-weekly Bible studies and we also have several more events planned for these kids, and hopefully each and every one of these events will point them to our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This post is not intended as a rant against the Church. God has ordained the Body of Christ as a whole to be His ambassadors to the world, and we strongly believe in that calling. It is just so disappointing sometimes to see that calling watered down to the point of primarily focusing on those within the walls of the church. I praise God that a body of believers decided to reach out to these overlooked children three years ago and I pray that God would light a fire under many churches across America to reach out beyond their own walls to a lost and dying world.

Summer is here at last!

Today’s expected high is forecasted to be 106 degrees at Una Esperanza in Juarez, Mexico! Here in South Orange County California it’s a warm but bearable 87 degrees.

Our local ministry with the Una Esperanza O.C. Kids shifts into high gear this week as the school year ends for the kids and their summer vacation begins. We’ll be spending an entire week with these kids during an upcoming vacation bible school (VBS) event at a local church. We’ll also be kicking off our twice-weekly bible studies at the beach. We have several day-trips planned for the kids and even a weekend camping trip later this summer.

We hope to add even more kids to this ministry but we’re very limited to the number of children we can include without additional transportation. We’re in need of a passenger van or SUV capable of hauling all these extra kids around so please keep this need in your prayers!

Una Esperanza-Mexico Update:
Patsy our onsite missionary at Una Esperanza has had some recent health problems and the ministry center has been closed for the past three weeks as a result. She reports that she’s doing much better and we’re hoping to have her back in action and the ministry center opened again sometime this week.

Training for Battle

“Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” Psalm 144:1 Lately, I can truly relate to this particular verse.

It would be wonderful if verses like this relating to battle somehow didn’t apply to us as we lived a peace-filled life as “turn the other cheek” Christians. The sad reality is that there is evil in the world around us, and sometimes we are forced to face and even confront this evil. This is especially true in Kilometer 33. Juarez has had almost 400 murders this year alone, and all of Mexico is at war with the drug lords that have held this country captive for decades. Danger is a reality. We ultimately rely on God’s protection when we travel to Una Esperanza, and we have experienced this divine protection many times, but it’s also wise to prepare the best we can.

I’ve trained in martial arts for years, and after a two-year layoff, I felt the need to hone my skills again so I joined a local MMA (mixed martial arts) fight training gym that teaches Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai kick boxing and wrestling. The idea is to master each unique discipline and combine them all together, i.e. MMA.

Most of my instructors are professional fighters and they very much look the part. My personal trainer Adam looks like he could kill you with his bare hands, and quite honestly, he probably could if he wanted to! He’s covered in tattoos, (which seems to be common in the profession) shaves his head and looks just plain mean!

Adam and the other instructors also train our son Noah three times a week, and I’ve learned (and so has Noah) that you can’t judge a book by its cover. As we’ve gotten to know Adam, we have found that he’s genuinely one of the nicest guys we’ve met in a long time.

I’ve since discovered that many of the instructors at the gym are also Christians, and Noah and I have had a great time establishing friendships and honing our self-defense skills. Lesli and I have even established some meaningful relationships with some of the parents of the other students as we sit in on Noah’s classes. We never know when or where God may use us but it’s exciting to see how He does when we least expect it!

O. C. (Orange County) Kids update:
Our Una Esperanza O.C. Kids spent this past Memorial Day weekend at our home as they often do and it was a great time of building relationships and having fun. We had church at our home with these kids on Sunday and it was a great time of studying God’s word together. We thought we’d give the home church concept a try, and I must say that everyone enjoyed the experience greatly! The kids seemed to get a lot out of it and we were able to share specific needs and pray for each one, and I think that meant a lot to the kids. It reminded me of how the early church must have been where they gathered in homes and sought to meet each other’s spiritual and physical needs.

Una Esperanza Juarez, Mexico Update:
Patsy (our on-site missionary at Una Esperanza) has been reporting that she has been seeing a real breakthrough with the kids at Una Esperanza ever since our January trip where we made a point to hug and pray for each child at the center.

The Easter trip with the Iowa State Navigators also made a huge impact on these kids. She says that they have really been responsive to the bible teaching like never before. Una Esperanza has been doing well, but we still have many obstacles ahead to overcome, and we would greatly appreciate your continued prayers as we seek to reach the “least of these” in Jesus name.

Mother's Day

I just wanted to express how thankful I am that I get to be a mother to quite a few kids, both here in the US and in Mexico. I couldn't ask for a sweeter son than my Noah. He has such a sensitive heart for God, and he's always my #1 little man, and he so willingly shares my love with so many other kids who call me "Mom." I am so grateful that God has opened up our world and our hearts to include all of them. My heart is full of blessings that each one of the children in my life have brought into my life, and I can't imagine life any other way.

Our Orange County kids fill our home with joy and have added many girls to our lives, which is a wonderful addition, and I love my God-given daughters so very much. They make me laugh, and they brighten my life and my weekends.

All the little (and big) ones that God has brought into my life through the work of Una Esperanza fill my heart with love and hope for them, that they will have a better future because they are coming to know Christ as their hope. God has given Brad and I the privilege of unique positions as the father and mother of so many children who know no other love or parenting.

I'm also so thankful to God for my own mom. Hopefully she'll forgive my using this picture from our past. She has taught me and continues to teach me much about living by faith and loving God. I'm so proud of the legacy of faith that my mom has given me, and I want to always pass that on to my children - God is good, and He is faithful, and He can be trusted with anything and everything. Thank you God, and thank you, Mom.

Fruit That Will Remain...

One of the tasks the Iowa State team took on when they came to see us over Easter was to paint the interior of the ministry center, and as I look at the pictures that we have on the photo gallery (*shameless attempt to get you to go view them*), I'm reminded of a verse in John 15 that God kind of highlighted to me back in October of last year. Verse 16 of John 15 says, "You did not choose me, but I chose you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you." We've long talked with Patsy about how we all wanted to have scripture and art work on the walls where the children can learn the significance and apply it to their lives, so were all excited when Hunter and his crew jumped right in to bring our dreams to life.

The first day they spent a lot of time cleaning the junk off the walls and masking out the line between the "earth" and "sky" that we wanted painted, then they laid the foundation of the blue sky and the green grass. There was a lot of detail work and more than once, someone had to clean a little paint off the windows that had errantly found its way onto the glass. That day's work kind of reminded me of how we've been laying a foundation with these kids at Una Esperanza, establishing relationships in the community, "cleaning the junk off", if you will, and laying a firm foundation for the Word of God to take hold of them.

The second day the painters started sketching out the trees and envisioning the details of what the scene would entail, where would the trees be, what scripture would be painted on the wall, what types of trees, etc. This reminds me of the visions that God has put before us as a goal -plans and ideas of ways to reach these Tarahumara Indians for Christ. Just as there were adjustments to the planned artwork to make it more beautiful, God has also brought about adjustments and tweaks to the plans we've begun, altering them slightly to give God alone the glory and to make the outcome more fruitful.

Finally, as the tree trunks were in place and the scriptures were posted on a banner across the trees (in Spanish and in English), the leaves were sponged onto the landscape, creating a lush background for the fruit that would be added at a later time (pictures of our kids, in this case). As I saw all the foliage on the trees, I was so excited. God had promised us fruit that would remain, and I was seeing so much room for all that fruit! It's such a visual reminder of all that God has promised to do through Una Esperanza, and we look so forward to the trees being full of fruit that will remain in Him and grow to full maturity.

She's Back!

(Lesli here...)What an awesome day this has been. We've had a great week with the Navigators group from Iowa State. They were such a blessing to us and to our kids. More about that in a moment.

When we arrived at the ministry center this morning, we were greeted by a familiar face - Mariquita (Alicia) arrived back at Kilometer 33 last night and we were so thrilled to see her beautiful smile and give her lots of hugs. It truly felt like that blessing was more than we could even imagine to top off this week. It felt like God was giving us an extra special gift to have her back.

As I mentioned in the beginning, we've had a marvelous time with these young men and women from Iowa State. We were blessed in so many ways by them as they served and loved on our kids. We've never had our kids so impacted by people that have come to Una Esperanza. They were truly examples of servant leadership and were such amazing examples of Christ's love, and we're confident that the investment they made this week will have wonderful eternal results.

We are so grateful for their willingness to serve in any way that was needed - they renovated our playground set using their engineering and ingenuity skills, they painted the interior of our ministry center with a wonderful new mural, they told Bible stories and acted out skits that wonderfully engaged the kids, they gave countless "caballo" rides on their backs, they led the kids in music and worship, helped the kids with crafts, and just loved the kids in any every way they could.

Please keep them in your prayers as they will be driving back the 20-something hours to Iowa in the next two days. We thank God for bringing them into our lives and to the children of Una Esperanza. Brian, thanks so much for listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and bringing your crew to Juarez. God bless you guys and we love you all!

Easter 2007 at Una Esperanza

The grand opening of the Tienda de Una Esperanza store was held last Friday. Our purpose for this particular project is to promote self-sustainability for the people of Kilometer 33, and a percentage of the proceeds will go towards providing for our daily feeding and ministry program at the Una Esperanza ministry center. We’re already seeing results, and Monday we were able to feed the children for the first time in weeks. This has been a welcome blessing, especially during this difficult time where the need has far outgrown our current resources! Please join us in prayer for this “Store of Hope” addition to the Una Esperanza ministry center.

We’re getting ready for our annual Easter trip to Una Esperanza and looking forward to celebrating Easter with the children of Kilometer 33. We have a team of 21 from Iowa State University joining us for the week and we're looking forward to making much about Jesus!

We’ll be flying out this Saturday March 15th and returning Monday March 24th and we would appreciate your prayers. Please pray that many would come to know Christ through our efforts and that God would bless this trip abundantly!

We are praising God that our second annual Easter mission trip has been confirmed. A team of 21 from Iowa State University will be visiting Una Esperanza March 16-21. They will also be sponsoring fundraising events at two separate churches in Iowa for Kingdom Flight this Sunday, March 9th. Please join us in prayer for God’s blessing on their efforts!

We were hoping to be able to travel to Una Esperanza this week for the grand opening of the Una Esperanza store scheduled for this Friday, but unfortunately, we just don’t have the funds to do so. Una Esperanza also remains closed for the fourth week in a row for this same reason. We are still waiting on God’s provision, and we know that this is something that only He can fix. Please pray for the children of Una Esperanza and for us during this difficult season. We may not always see God at work through our circumstances, but we do know that He is faithful.

One Week To Go...

Well, things are coming together for the store at Una Esperanza. The above picture shows progress that's been made in the last few weeks - the exterior is being covered with stucco and will soon be painted to match our ministry center, and we have roll-up security doors to cover the doors and windows (which we learned the hard way are a necessity in Mexico...).

Texas State SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) has been working with us on this project and has so generously given so much to make this project a reality. It's so encouraging to interact with people who seek to help out in Kilometer 33, among the people of Una Esperanza, and in such a tangible way. It is our prayer that this store and the financial proceeds that it brings will help the people of Una Esperanza and also help to fund the ministry center in some way. We have also been brought into relationship (through SIFE) with a ministry in New Mexico that would like to be an ongoing help in supplying food for our feeding program in the future, so we definitely thank God for His divine appointments.

The grand opening of the store is scheduled for next Friday, March 7th, and we are so excited about this. We want to give God thanks publicly for all that He has brought to pass in this project and to dedicate it to His glory, and we would ask you to pray that God would supply the finances for us to go out to Una Esperanza and be part of this celebration. With all the struggles and battles of the past season, we just want to rejoice in what God has done.

Also along that line, we thank God that we were able to have a feeding for some of the children yesterday. It's been a tough few weeks when we haven't had the finances to feed our kids, and we praise God that we could do it yesterday.

We so appreciate the prayers and encouragement we have received from so many people who are standing with us in this season of challenge. We know that God is good and faithful, and we praise Him for bringing people into our lives that are truly people of faith and are led by the Holy Spirit. Please continue to pray for us as and when God leads you to do so.

The Una Esperanza O.C. Kids

In the summer of 2006, I was asked to lead a group of children in our hometown during a church-sponsored Vacation Bible School (VBS). I must say that I really wasn’t all that interested at the time. I already had the physical and spiritual needs of some 150 neglected Indian children in Mexico to keep me busy, and I wasn’t really looking forward to working with the often over-indulged children of South Orange County California. However, I strongly felt that God was calling me to take on this group of children, so I carved out the time.

It turned out that the group of children that I was assigned was the only group of Latino children attending the event, out of some 700 children. Working with these kids was such a wonderful blessing that we established a local ministry (The Una Esperanza O.C. Kids) for these same children. Ministering to these children is a bit different than ministering to the neglected and often abused Tarahumara children of Mexico. Physical poverty is not really the issue for these children, but it soon became clear to us that the spiritual needs were much the same.

This local ministry has since become an integral and rewarding part of the Kingdom Flight ministry, and we’ve seen incredible spiritual growth in several of these children. The Una Esperanza O.C. Kids accompany us to church, we’ve held our own beach Bible studies and VBS events, and when we’re not out spending time with these kids in our local area, they’re often hanging out with us at our home.

I just finished a short video highlighting the Una Esperanza O.C. Kids, which can be accessed from our home page. We’d greatly appreciate your prayers for this local ministry as well as your continued prayers for the children of our Una Esperanza-Juarez ministry center.

God's Word Promises Peace Amidst The Storms Of Life.

Last summer, Lesli had the idea of posting this blog as a way of communicating what God is doing through the ministry. I agreed and one of our very first posts was on the successful Mariquita rescue last July. We literally had hundreds of people following this story as it unfolded, and the prayers of many were felt during the rescue. However, sharing the trials and difficulties we encounter are not naturally reported with the same enthusiasm as praises. But if we truly believe that God is in control, shouldn’t we be able to report them this way?

Over the past several months, God has been teaching us to be content in all situations, and believe it or not, this means contentment even during the difficult times. God’s Word says that we have the ability through His strength to be content in all situations. If His Word says that I can have this contentment, I’m going to do my best to achieve it!

Over the past six months, we lost our only Kingdom Flight aircraft, financial giving has been way down, and because of this we’ve had to limit our visits to Una Esperanza. As a result, the ministry to the Tarahumara in general has suffered setbacks. The ministry center remains closed for the second week in a row due to the continued lack of funds. To add to all of this, we’ve encountered intense spiritual warfare on every front during these difficult times!

Una Esperanza Today

I can honestly say that in spite of our current circumstances, God has given us a wonderful peace and contentment through all of this! God has used these trials to deepen our relationship and dependence on Him. I used to do well to devote fifteen minutes a day in dedicated prayer. Yes, I prayed often during the day, but the recent trials placed on my heart the need to spend much more time in prayer without distractions. Each day I now climb a hill behind our house and pray for at least an hour and most often find myself praying for much longer. God has used these difficult times to confirm our calling, give direction, and strengthen our marriage. We’ve even had the time to intensify our study of Spanish so that we can communicate more effectively when we are able to finally get back to ministering in Mexico.

I’ve learned that His yoke is indeed easy and that I do not have to carry the burdens He never intended for me to carry! Sometimes we just have to be patient, wait expectantly, and trust Him. God is good and He is trustworthy!

Note: We believe that God may be about to provide us with yet another aircraft for the ministry soon. We would humbly ask that you keep this in your prayers, as this is a vital tool for helping us reach the lost and “the least of these” in remote areas.

Not My Burden

It’s Not My Burden! I’ve been resting in God’s peace by saying this quite a bit this week. This week has been an unusually difficult one for me. Our Una Esperanza ministry center in Juarez, Mexico has been closed for just over a week now because we ran out of money. It costs us about $200 per day to operate the ministry center and for the first time in quite a long while, we’ve had to close the center.

Traditionally, we see a dramatic drop in giving right after the holidays each year, and this year it’s even lower than in previous years. God has been incredibly faithful in providing for this ministry for over five years now, but when we’re forced to close the center because funds are low, I tend to try to fix things through my own strength.

We firmly believe that Kingdom Flight is called to be different than other ministries when it comes to fundraising. Our fundraising methods are spelled out in detail on our website under the “About Us” section, so I won’t spend time on the details here, but in a nutshell, we do the majority of our fundraising through prayer alone.

We take Mathew 6:33 literally. We believe that Kingdom Flight belongs to God and that He will guide and provide all that we need if we “seek first His kingdom”. His word says so, doesn't it? Or does this mean that we should seek His will and His kingdom first and then add our own ideas (or fundraising efforts) to the mix? Most ministries nowadays spend a great deal of time focusing on fundraising methods, and there’s nothing really wrong with this at all. However, we firmly believe that God has called us to fundraise primarily through prayer alone, and this is what we do.

In my human reasoning, I often do not understand God’s plans or why He would ever allow our funds to get so precariously low that we have to close the ministry center. Doesn’t He want us to continue reaching these precious children? Doesn’t He ultimately want to us to take the gospel to the estimated 70,000 and virtually unreached Tarahumara Indians living in the mountains some 250 miles further south? I believe that He absolutely does! Then if so, why does money run low from time to time? Why after our recent spiritual breakthrough with the Tarahumara children of Kilometer 33 are we suddenly brought to a screeching halt?

I tend to take these financial burdens on myself, and if Una Esperanza is closed, I question whether it’s because I’m failing to do something I should be doing to make sure that we have the money to continue. I’ve concluded that this might be true if we were called to operated like most other ministries. What God has taught me this week is that I have played very little part in raising any of the money He has ever provided for Kingdom Flight to date. We funded this ministry through my construction business initially, but over three years ago the demands of Kingdom Flight became so great that I had to close the construction business altogether and devote myself to the ministry full-time. Lesli joined me in full-time ministry in October of 2006, and we’ve been totally dependent on God’s provision for us and Kingdom Flight ever since!

This week God has taught me that He will meet all of our needs in His timing, not mine. He may not necessarily meet all of our wants, but He will meet all of our needs. This even applies to Una Esperanza being open. Una Esperanza is His, and if He wants it open, it will be and I have to trust Him on this. I’ve also learned that we’re right where He wants us right now and that I do not have to carry this burden myself - it’s His!

Matthew 11:29-30 says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

This week I’m doing my best to carry His yoke and I’m also doing my best to separate His burdens from my burdens. Are you carrying any burdens this week that belong to God? If so, may I encourage you to take His yoke upon you and lay your burdens at His feet? He is faithful, and it’s wonderful to find rest for your soul, even when things don't necessarily make sense.

Maria is back living at Una Esperanza

I just returned from my first solo trip to Una Esperanza in well over a year and it was not quite the same without Lesli and Noah (or Dina) along. Our finances are at an all time low right now so I made this trip alone to save money. Please pray for us and for Gods provision as the financial resources required to sustain the Una Esperanza ministry center have been steadily growing as we minister to even more children each week!

The Una Esperanza store nears completion and the proceeds will help to financially sustain the ministry center.

Maria returned to Una Esperanza last week so I flew out to help her get settled in and I also brought her some new clothing and other essential items. She has grown quite a bit since we last saw her in August and she’s very happy to be living back at Una Esperanza. We’ve been told that Mariquita will be back in three months as well so please keep this in your prayers.

I’m happy to share that the war with the Indians over the Mariquita rescue seems to have ended peacefully. All of our regular Tarahumara children are back at the center and we even have quite a few new kids. The place is crawling with kids each day and most often filled to capacity! The children are really responding to the daily Bible lessons and we're seeing glimpses of the spiritual breakthrough that we’ve been praying for. Our staff is really focused and excited about this new year and there’s an excitement in the air about “making much about Jesus”.

Maria is back at Una Esperanza!
Maria returned to Una Esperanza this past weekend and I will be flying out to welcome her back tomorrow afternoon. Her sister Mariquita who we rescued last July after she was abducted from Una Esperanza is currently living with her mother on a ranch south of Juarez and is doing fine. We’re still fervently praying for Mariquita’s quick and safe return to Una Esperanza and we’re praising God for Maria being back with us! This is indeed an awesome answer to prayer! Please continue to pray for the safe return of Mariquita.

God Knows My Name

Friday afternoon we had a great time at Una Esperanza. In the morning before the feeding, Patsy and I had the children help with painting and decorating poster boards that depicted Creation and what happened on each day, and then late in the afternoon Patsy taught a Bible lesson on Creation and had some of the children present a play about how God created light on Day 1 and that each subsequent day, He created the things that His creations would need, all because He loved them so much and wanted to provide for them.

After we sang a song together with the children, Patsy shared with them that Jesus is the Light, and that He seeks to live in each one of us and wants us to know that He loves us. Several children indicated that they wanted the Light of Christ to live inside them and came up to receive Christ as their Savior. Following this, she had several of our staff members as well as Brad and myself come to the front of the room, and invited the children to come forward and receive a hug from each of us that was a tangible means of them feeling the love of God the Father for them each personally.

As the children came through one by one, I was reminded of a song we sing in church and had played during the lunch feeding -

I am not forgotten, I am not forgotten, I am not forgotten,
God knows my name, He knows my name.

Light over darkness, strength over weakness, joy over sadness,
He knows my name.
Father to the fatherless, Friend to the friendless,
Hope to the hopeless,
He knows my name.

Knowing the family situations of most of these children coming into my arms for hugs, I was brought to tears many times, knowing that this was perhaps the first time they had received affection in a long time, if at all in their lives. Boys and girls alike were in tears, feeling loved and not wanting to let go. Even the ones that can tend to cause trouble at times melted into our arms and received the love that was offered. We've been praying for a break-through, and we believe that this was a step in that direction.

This is a photo of me hugging Benito, who is the older brother to Maria and Mariquita. Benito recently returned to Kilometer 33 after being taken away several months ago. Right now he's on his own, staying at a friend's house, but we know that he's going hungry and the biting cold is taking its toll on everyone right now. It was both heartbreaking and encouraging to hold him and tell Him that God loves him and so do I, and that God knows his name and has not forgotten Him. I told him that because he has no earthly father, God is His father and he is a special son in God's sight. He is just one story out of so many more. Benito told us that Maria and Mariquita should be returning to Kilometer 33 in two weeks, so we ask for your prayers in this matter, that God would indeed bring them back to Una Esperanza.

As each of these precious children came through and was held in our arms for just a moment, it was a reminder to us that God does indeed know each of their names - Maribel, Manuel, Aaron, Carolina, Adelita, Josue, Perla, Rojo, Juanita, Denise, Lucy, Benito - He knows their names and their situations, and He has not forgotten about them. He loves them and has given His Son to ransom them, and that is the message that we must continue to share with them, loving them on a daily basis and taking every opportunity to tell them that Jesus is the hope for their future.

We’ve been enjoying our stay at Una Esperanza and the place is crazy as ever with kids everywhere! Things are going great but as usual, we’ve had our share of issues. For starters, someone broke into our Una Esperanza store last night which is under construction, and they stole the doors right off the building.

They also took the material we had just purchased to finish stuccoing the building along with a bunch of tools for the construction work. We posted a wanted poster on the building and we’re hopeful that someone in the neighborhood will turn the thief in so we can recover these items.

Students In Free Interprise (SIFE) from Texas State University is funding this store and it has taken us months to get this project near completion and we really don’t need any further delays. Please join us in prayer that we would recover the stolen items so that this store can open on schedule next month.
