Hey folks, Random Old Records Podcast is still here after thirteen years. Still using other people's words to tell my own story. Still listening to all of the music to find the gems. Still wearing a mask, still not leaving my house. I must be doing something right, because EPISODE #95 is one of the best things I've ever done!

OK, so 2021 started and I somehow became obsessed with 90s punk rock again. It's pretty intense, probably the most obsessed I've been since well, the 90s. EPISODE #91 of Random Old Records is filled with classics and sleepers from the last decade of the 20th century, plus a whole lot more.

You'll hear Bikini Kill, Tilt, Propagandhi, the Fastbacks, and Pennywise. You'll also hear garage rock and psychedelic classics from the Belfast Gypsies, the Moon, and the Vogues, plus soul bangers by Ray Redmond and Della Reese. You'll also hear some ska, I think? Like a lot of people, I haven't left my house much for the last seven months. I've spent a lot of time with headphones on, trying to find the dreamiest music possible to escape into and pass the time. EPISODE #88 is crammed full of distorted guitars, piercing synths, vocal histrionics, and meditations on lives both small and large.

In this hour, you will hear classics from Lone Justice, The Soup Dragons, and Beverly, brand new jams from White Poppy, Maria Minerva, and The Lemon Twigs, plus a whole lot more. It jumps from country-rock to soul to garage pop to deep dance beats to progressive peacoat rock to trance-folk to throwback Britpop to real-deal Britpop. It all kicks off with a rare blast of horn-driven proto-punk from The Rats, then winds its way through classic garage rock and punk from The Pagans, Thee Headcoatees, The Customs, The Pandoras, and maybe even a couple bands that don't start with "The". Then, you'll hear vital new post-punk jams from Sweeping Promises, Lithics, and Naked Roommate, before the whole thing finishes up with a bone-chilling goth-country classic from Sammi Smith called "Saunders Ferry Lane". There's music for the head and music for the heart and music for the soul and music for the feet. Enjoy!

This comes from the INCREDIBLE compilation We Were Living In Cincinnati, which collects rare punk from my hometown and was released by the ever dependable Hozac Records. Get it now! Happy 2020! I got married in 2019 which was pretty incredible, but otherwise the year was mighty rough in all sorts of ways for all sorts of people. Luckily, music continues to be amazing and it always seems to be there to lift everyone back up when they need it the most. EPISODE #79 of Random Old Records Podcast is here to start off the new year right with an hour of that sweet, sweet musical nectar!

Loveland, Ohio-based Colemine Records was the hands-down label of the year, putting out a steady string of soulful and thoughtful LPs and 45s. So, it makes sense to feature a stack of jams from their catalog, including the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Thee Sinseers, and Black Pumas. Vivian Girls came back after a long absence with an incredible new album, and you will also hear the crucial "I'm Far Away" on this episode (plus more in the future, it's REALLY good). In between, there are a bunch of new and old jams from Opal, Possible Humans, Chromatics, Death and Vanilla, plus so much more. 2019 is nearly over, and I don't feel like doing a best of the year playlist, so I figured the next best thing to do would be to go back in time! EPISODE #78 is the annual 5/10/15/20 episode of Random Old Records, which surveys the best or most interesting music from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago.

1999 features emo and pop punk from Saves The Day, American Football, and the Get Up Kids, while 2004 brings indie anthems from Aloha and Panthers. Going back 10 years to 2009, you'll hear classic garage pop from Grass Widow, Strange Boys, and King Automatic, and 2014 finishes things up with dreamy psych by The Paperhead and the Allah-Las. 2020 will bring more brand new jams to Random Old Records, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy the retro ride!

It's a couple weeks later than I wanted, but Random Old Records is finally back! EPISODE #74 is a little bit messy. It's silly and sad, loud and soft, joyous and tense, goofy and awkward. Some of the transitions are a bit rough. There's some stuff here that sounds a little out-of-place if you're expecting hard-edged garage punk. #74 kicks off with a set of classic Britpop, finishing up a with fresh track from Lush/Elastica/Moose supergroup Piroshka, then careens from electronic pop by Yumi Zouma to long-awaited new music from Australian punks UV Race, to blistering rage from Control Top, to sweet piano pop from Girl Ray, to old-school Random Old Records favorites like People's Temple and Teledrime, to a whole bunch more new and old rock n' roll. It's one of the most frantic and emotional episodes I've ever done, so enjoy the ride!

Hey folks, it's time for a brand new Random Old Records Podcast! EPISODE #73 starts out punk rock, ends up pop, and takes a lot of wild detours in between. The original playlist for this one was over four hours, and it took a lot of work to get it down to 59 minutes and 37 seconds. Let's dive in!

This month, I felt a sudden shock of inspiration and this podcast seemed to appear instantly out of thin air! EPISODE #70 of Random Old Records started like many past ones have, with a song that I couldn't get out of my head.

In this case, it was the first track off the classic 1997 album by The Promise Ring, Nothing Feels Good. "Is This Thing On?" lit a spark in me that led to a set of incredible late '90s post-hardcore emo-punk-pop from Jets To Brazil, Superchunk, and others. From there, the episode flows into a bunch of recent jams from One Eleven Heavy, Shannon and the Clams, Exploded View, Mountain Movers, Dreamend, and so much more. If you like raw post-punk, rootsy guitars, and/or dreamy drones, there's something for you here, plus you'll get wild excerpts from the 1960 sci-fi classic Amazing Transparent Man!

In 1998, The Jesus & Mary Chain came back after a few years out of the spotlight, the Jesus Lizard released their final albums, and bands like American Steel and Murder City Devils broke out huge. By 2003, post-hardcore dominated the zeitgeist, with the Blood Brothers, Cursive making their definitive LPs. In 2008, the garage rock underground exploded with classic releases by Nobunny and the Ettes, while punk rock ruled the day in 2013. Check out this episode for a dose of nuclear-powered nostalgia!

Random Old Records Podcast #65

I tried coming up with some kind of theme to EPISODE #65 of Random Old Records, but had the hardest time. 18 out of the 20 tracks included here feature a female vocalist, but it's not any kind of feminist statement. It jumps across genres. There's punk and reggae but not at the same time. There's great love songs, great rage songs, and a couple where I have no idea what they are about. It's music for singing and swaying and dancing.

The early-going is dominated by British music from the late 80s, thanks to the incredible recent C87 and C88 box sets from Cherry Red that document those years in UK indie history. There's been so many great CD-only releases lately that I have started buying them regularly again. You'll also hear new tracks from second-generation reggae rocker Hollie Cook, NYC poppers The Shacks, and Canadian no-wave dynamos Ruby Karinto. Their self-titled debut LP on HoZac is an early frontrunner for album of the year!

Loveland, Ohio's own Colemine Records is also highlighted, via a track from their February reissue of Gloria Barnes' rare deep-soul classic Uptown, and a recent moody soul cut from The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. The episode then finishes up with some new and old post-punk bashers from Aquarium, Grass Widow, Pill, the World, and so much more!

I didn't put out a podcast in March, since this one ended up being an absolute MONSTER to put together. Back in Summer of 2016, I did an episode where every song came from my personal collection of 7" singles. That one was so much fun, and I've picked up a bunch of new 45s in the past two years, so why not do it again? EPISODE #64 of Random Old Records contains a whopping 26 new and old jams ranging from stone-cold punk rock classics to the freshest wax of 2018.

You will hear a healthy assortment of tracks from Total Punk Records, perhaps the best label currently releasing 45s on a regular basis, including the likes of Lysol, Rik & The Pigs, and Patsy, along with the always reliable Hozac Records, home to Surfbort and Mil Mascaras. In between, there are rippers by ISS, The Number Ones, Buzzcocks, JJ Doll, Good Throb, Terry, Parnsip, and a whole lot more. Also, dig those vintage commercials!

It's February 2018 and Valentine's Day was last week. Since love is still in the air and because everybody's got problems in this world, EPISODE #63 of Random Old Records is taking on the twin themes of love and dread. Check out an hour's worth of jams that are hand-picked by a real person, not an algorithm!

Starting off with some classic romantic tunes from Carl Carlton and the Chi-Lites, the episode moves through more love-themed soul classics and a few recent highlights from the Stones Throw label, then drops in some tense indie jangle from The Popguns and brooding rock from Northern Kentucky masters The Light Wires before finishing up with a stack of new post-punk and goth atmospheres. UK rockers Shame are one of the best bands I've heard in awhile, so please do check out their debut LP, Songs Of Praise.

In what is now a yearly tradition, EPISODE #61 of Random Old Records is a special 5/10/15/20 edition. For a little over an hour, I jump into the time machine and travel back to 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 to take a look around and sample the top jams of those particular years!

This time, I start off in 1997 with the stone-cold classic title track from Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out LP. Then, you'll hear a selection of 97's finest pop-punk and emo from the Get Up Kids and Promise Ring. Zipping right along to 2002, there's ripping punk from the Buff Medways and Idlewild, then a jump into 2007 for some rough and raw garage rock from The Ponys, Willowz, and Blitzen Trapper, before ending up in 2012 with Best Coast and Gentleman Jesse. Has it really been five years already since the last Gentleman Jesse record? That's too long, for sure.

I was spending a frenzied night at home getting this episode ready and while I was uploading it, a thought came into my head: November 2017 marks the NINTH year of Random Old Records Podcast. Sure, I've taken a few months or even years off at times, but this show remains my favorite hobby in the world. A lot has happened in that time, but I still love finding amazing jams and cutting them together into hourish-long podcasts. Hope you have as much fun listening to them as I do making them!

There isn't really a theme to EPISODE #60, except for a focus on newer music. It starts off with an anthem from Montana rockers Mordecai and a tense jangle bomb from Oakland's Rays, then features some non-one-word named bands like Erase Errata (PLEASE check out their reunion record from 2015) and Uranium Club, new tracks from shoegaze legends Lush and Slowdive, and a final section with classic 90s indie pop like World Of Pooh (also PLEASE check out the new reissue of their super-rare LP The Land Of Thirst, it is incredible) and The Spinanes.

TRUE STORY: this episode of Random Old Records was supposed to come out back in April. I had an entire hour mapped out, made a test-mix, and immediately hated it. So, I trashed the entire thing, sat on it awhile, made a few changes, still hated it, started from scratch and hated THAT one too, then heard the new album from Terry and found the perfect song to really make it sing. Now, it's nearly October and EPISODE #59 is finally ready for your listening pleasure!

It all kicks off with a series of songs straight out of the late '60s rock underground, featuring flashy horn arrangements, jazzy textures, and blasts of instrumental virtuosity. Then, you'll hear the massive 1995 single "Fanfare" by Eric Matthews, a selection of recent chill-pop from Omni and Mild High Club, some newer tracks from long-time Random Old Records favorites Natural Child and Black Mountain, and then the old and new start to intermingle before Black Moth Super Rainbow finishes up with a modern classic track. Happy February to you all! Everyone seems to be on edge lately due to the new president and the strange weather patterns moving their way across the United States, so what better way to turn off your brain and relax than a brand new episode of Random Old Records! I've already broken my resolution of putting these out on time, but hopefully the quality of this one will keep you listening!

EPISODE #58 kicks off with the hard funk of The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and flows into some rare grooves by Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces and Universal Togetherness Band, then drops in a brand new track from Foxygen, one of the best bands going right now in my opinion. They have dialed back the experimentation of their previous LP ...And Star Power and replaced it with lush arrangements and a bombastic Disney/Broadway vibe on the killer track "Follow The Leader". DEFINITELY go pick up the new record Hang when you get a chance!

Then, we go deeper into the land of Southern Soul and heavy horn and string arrangements with some classics from Stax and Bobbie Gentry, and some more kickin' country rock from New Riders Of The Purple Sage and Sir Douglas (country rock has been my JAM as of late!). We then come back to the present and finish up with some dreamy jangle from the Liminanas, Chook Race, and Shantih Shantih. All in all, it's a full sixty minutes and two seconds of great music to calm your shattered nerves and give you a little peace of mind. It's a brand new year, and to celebrate 2017, here's a brand new episode of Random Old Records Podcast! My new year's resolution is to get back to a regular schedule and release a new episode once a month, so hopefully I can stick to it! Doing this podcast is amazing fun, but it's only a hobby and I just don't have as much time to work on it as I would like. I'm also hoping to have more old episodes re-uploaded in the near future as well, so be on the lookout!

Episode #57 is filled with the sounds of the times. Most of the hour contains raging, angry punk rock from the year 2016, including nihilistic statements of protest from bands like Violence Creeps, Mongoloid, Pure Disgust, Anxiety, and Watery Love. The punk of 2016 was more diverse and stylistically challenging than it has been in awhile. These songs clearly prove that the "music is going to get great again in the next four years" crowd just isn't paying close enough attention.

60 straight minutes of bludgeoning rock n' roll can be a little monotonous, no matter how great it might be, so this episode contains a soft middle of bubblegum and country-rock that features a song from Hozac's crucial reissue of late-70s UK rockers Charlie 'Ungry, some cherry-picked compilation tracks, a super-catchy twangy obcurity by Swampwater, and a knockout hit from the Cowsills. Hey, folks! There was no episode of Random Old Records in October, truly sorry for the delay! I needed a little extra time to craft the perfect selection of tracks for this one. Episode #56 is a special 5-10-15-20 edition, which opens up the memory banks and goes back in time to the years 2011, 2006, 2001, and 1996. Looking back, none of these years were particularly "great" for music, but each one definitely has their fair share of jams!

In 2011, Thee Oh Sees kicked off a remarkable run of albums with the acid-folk creep of Castlemania. Meanwhile, The Beets delivered their excellent final LP Let The Poison Out before leader Juan Wauters started a solo career. A decade prior, Jersey post-hardcore rockers Rye Coalition unleashed THEIR final LP Curses, which had been in major label limbo for two years prior to release, and further south, Texas punks the Marked Men released their classic Fix My Brain.

2001 was the prime year for emo and post-hardcore, at least in my circle of friends at the time. Bands like Hey Mercedes and Hot Water Music were crafting anthems, while the remnants of Cap'n Jazz were crafting avant-fusion rock with Owls. Finally, the hour wraps up with a bunch of Britpop and indie rock from 1996, when both genres were in slight decline but still pumping out plenty of jams. In between the tracks are some vintage news stories to ramp up the nostalgia and complete the time capsule. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I had putting it together. I'm few weeks late this time, but hopefully this selection of jams will be worth the wait! September brings the great news that Memphis weirdo blues rockers the Grifters have reissued their classic 1994 LP, Crappin' You Negative. This hot mess of ugly distortion, bent guitar duels, and loose-limbed grooves might be a bit dated, but it still bleeds passion and grit through the speakers like it did back then. I was lucky enough to see them on a reunion tour last year, and the addition of age, wisdom, and increased precision made them even more powerful. Here's tp the hope that they make more music!

Episode #55 of Random Old Records starts off with the Grifters aptly enough, then goes all over the map. You'll hear an absolute jangle-pop earworm from Paperhead bassist Peter Stringer-Hye, a classic Aussie punk jam from Kim Salmon and The Scientists, a brand-new song from Rangers, and a gross, Flipper-lovin' punk plod from Cleveland's Rubber Mate. Finally, in honor of my recent viewing of the Amphetamine Reptile/Tom Hazelmyer documentary The Color Of Noise, you get a ferocious track from Halo Of Flies, and like-minded jams from Laughing Hyenas and Chrome Cranks. Another month has passed, and Random Old Records Podcast has returned with another hour's worth of jams! Earlier in the year, I acquired the amazing 3 disc compilation on Cherry Red Records called Dust On The Nettles. This set goes deep into the UK's psychedelic folk scene, from big names like Pentangle, Fairport Convention, and Vashti Bunyan, to complete obscurities. This is a genre I knew very little about, and it totally blew my mind open! Also, my favorite artist of 2015, Ryley Walker, just released his brand new album, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, and it is loaded with way out folk explorations as well.

On episode #54, "The Roundabout" by Walker mingles with tracks from Dust On The Nettles, along with other folky favorites from the time period by Ramases and Mike Cooper. You will also hear brand new tracks from old favorites Night Beats and Klaus Johann Grobe, a sizzling jam from Columbus' Counter Intuits (featuring Ron House from Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments!), and more from The Lavender Flu double LP. Random Old Records Podcast #53

Well, I spent a little over a month going through my modest collection of 7" vinyl and have picked out 28 tracks, both A's and B's. Episode #53 of Random Old Records is dedicated to the EP, the single, the 45, the seven inch vinyl record! Though it sometimes sucks to get up and flip a record over every couple of minutes, the 7" is unmatched in its ability to get the heart racing. Like a slap in the face, the best singles make their mark, get in, and get out. You can grab the latest episode HERE.

The singles I pulled for this podcast mostly fall into three main categories. First is a batch of mid-90s era punk rock, from back when the ads in Maximumrocknroll were my primary source of record shopping in my small Ohio town. I used to fold up my lunch money in a piece of paper, mail it across the country, and wait 6-8 weeks for these jams, and I'm not about to launch into a crabby old man bit about how it made me appreciate them more, If I had been offered a Paypal account and tracking numbers back in 1995, I would have snapped them right up!! I still spin the stack of crucial singles from Rip-Off Records (you'll hear a ripper from Teengenerate in this episode) all of the time, along with the singles from Indiana pop-punkers The Beautys and kinda-terrible-but-also-amazing Screeching Weasel-clones Everready.

This isn't a total nostalgia trip though, because ROR #53 is mostly filled with rock n' roll of recent vintage, with a heavy saturation of selections from Florida's incredible Total Punk label. Each release from Total Punk comes in a white paper sleeve with a hand-stamped cover, and presents the best in modern punk rock from the likes of Life Stinks, Midnite Snaxxx, Slugga, and Vatican Dagger. You'll also hear songs from the Lumpy Records stable, another label that specializes in contemporary punk rock with inspired, home-spun sleeve designs. Dig that filthy hardcore blast "Wash Up", by Calgary degenerates Glitter!

Finally, we finish up with some tracks from my favorite flea market finds. Who knew that the B-Side of the bubblegum classic "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" was a lush, harmonized bit of sunshine pop that's at least 78% as good as its more famous flip? In contrast, The Peppermint Trolley Company's heady, psychosis-psych popper "9 O'Clock Business Man" fits perfectly on the B-Side, and it was comped on the first volume of Soft Sounds For Gentle People. Luckily, Random Old Records Podcast is back with a brand new episode containing 58 minutes and 7 seconds of chilled-out jams that feel like a blast of sweet A/C to the face. Episode #52 starts off with some recent blissed-out ballads from the likes of Martin Courtney, Salad Boys, and The Lavender Flu, then flows into two sizzling sets of 60s sunshine pop and soft psych. You'll hear the brooding and tense "Her Name Is Melody" from Adrian Pride (a pseudonym for tripped-out troubadour Bernie Schwartz), recently featured on the Nuggets: Hallucinations comp re-released on Record Store Day 2016. You'll also hear the fuzzed-out "Bad Dream" from the heavily mustachioed Dick Domane, included on Pet Records' essential Mystic Males collection, and the chiming folk-rocker "Leaving It All Behind" by The Toads, included on Pet Records' also essential It's Zimmerman's World LP (and a whole lot more from Pet Records since they are AMAZING and you need everything they ever put out).

This one took a lot of time to put together, just to ensure a solid sequence of good vibes from front to back. I hope everyone enjoys it! I've been busy cataloging and organizing my 7" collection for the first time in many years, so July's episode will feature an hour of top jams culled from my racks of 45s! It features former Hunches guitarist Chris Gunn going long and weird on a sprawling set of suburban loner back porch pop with a crew of guests. Hey, folks!! Another month has gone by, and now here's a brand new episode of Random Old Records Podcast to (possibly) bring some joy to your life and (hopefully) break up the monotony. This time around, it starts off with a run of classic country and country-rock, including the maddeningly catchy "Mare, Take Me Home" by Wildweeds, and the acoustic beauty of "She's My Girl" by UK rockers Help Yourself. Then, there's a detour into the amazing new Numero Group compilation Cosmic American Music for a track by private press journeyman Allan Wachs, which is bursting with spooky highway Seger vibes.

Elsewhere, you will hear tough-edged power pop from Mama and Mother's Children, a track from the underrated last Warm Soda LP, and a set of blazing old and new hardcore from around the US. On the tour is Cincinnati's own Everyday Objects, Rüz from St. Louis, Stuck Pigs from DC, and Poison Idea from Portland. Finally, you get a set of goth-pop including three of the best vocalists in rock n' roll today: Hether Fortune of Wax Idols, Jess Poplawski of Survival, and Haley Morris of Pleasure Leftists.

Random Old Records Podcast #50

To be honest, one of the reasons I started doing Random Old Records Podcast again was because I was so close to episode #50 when I went on my hiatus. To be so close to that milestone when I gave it up never really sat well with me. Well, here we are, and I'll probably do another 50 before I'm done.

In that spirit, there's no looking back in this episode. No compilation of the "best" songs I've ever played or the best in-between bits I've scavenged and put together. They're all supposed to be the best anyway, right? Soon all of the old episodes will be back online and then you'll be free to check those out any time. If you scroll down, you'll see that episodes #2 and #3 are back online for the first time in years. Episode #3 features a run of classic Dischord Records jams from Void, Embrace, and The Make-Up, while episode #2 takes a trip from The Rezillos to The Gun Club to The Lovin' Spoonful ("6' O'Clock", what a song!). Don't forget to check back frequently to the Podcast Archive below for more old episodes.

Anyway, episode #50 contains nearly an hour's worth of songs that have never been played on Random Old Records before, kicking off with the opening track of La Sera's amazing 2014 album Hour Of The Dawn, and also featuring the opening track off the brand new La Sera album, which isn't quite amazing but is still really, really good. You'll also hear grungy punk jams from Fleabite, Sports, and Personal Best, classic power pop from Zombies frontman Colin Blunstone, a hot modern disco track from Pharoahs featuring Maria Minerva, and a closing monster of a track: Catwoman Eartha Kitt taking on "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan and leaving no prisoners!

If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way.

It's been about six months since I last did a podcast, and over a year since I did these with any regularity, but a funny thing happened several weeks ago. I had figured returning to podcasting would be damn near impossible at this point. I hadn't done them monthly in forever, so where the hell was I gonna start?! I think I've bought and listened to something like three hundred records in the past year, and all of them are worthy of your attention in some way. So, I sat down and made a list, and by the time I was done I had filled both sides of a piece of paper and started writing more names in between the cracks. The simple theme of Random Old Records #45 is "things that blew my freakin' mind since the last one."

To be more specific, this episode features music that is slightly bent, cracked, or mutilated, with nothing much resembling standard pop, rock, or punk music. You'll hear freaky prog-folk from original Vertigo label acts Cressida and Tudor Lodge, blown-out punk noise by Flipper, Running, Obnox, and Sector Zero, and plain ol' weirdness by E.T. Habit, MX-80 Sound, and Captain Beefheart. Hope you all enjoy!

Random Old Records Podcast is back from its summer vacation! Not gonna try to make up any crazy excuses, the truth is that I was running low on inspiration after 3+ years of blogging and doing a monthly podcast, and decided to put it to rest for awhile instead of cranking 'em out just to keep the streak going.

Considering that it was four months in the making, EPISODE #43 of Random Old Records is a one hour MONSTER of fresh rock n' roll for your ears. It starts out with some ugly, noisy jams from Puffy Areolas and the K-Holes and crucial new punk rock from White Lung and Dikes Of Holland, hits the best tracks from the latest releases by The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and highlights some psych pop newcomers like The Marble Vanity and Jacco Gardner. This edition hits all the bases from the noisiest free-form freakouts to tight power pop and everything in between. So yeah, after over three years and 41 monthly episodes, I needed a little break from Random Old Records Podcast. When I started thinking about EPISODE #42 back in March, there was just too much shit going on, and the inspiration wasn't there, so I figured it was best to take a break (my first!) and stack up tracks for awhile. I never imagined that I would actually get e-mails from people asking when the next episode would be out. Well, it was only two, but still! You guys rule, and I can't thank you enough for listening to Random Old Records and patronizing this blog, even though I haven't posted a goddamn thing for months.

Anyway, Random Old Records #42 is out, and I'm super proud of this one. Holy moly, things are crazy in the midwest right now! Tornadoes, hail, sunshine, and a huge pile of badass rock n' roll records to listen to are among the highlights. This is also South By Southwest week, so #41 features a bunch of bands playing the annual music orgy plus so much more!

We're talkin' amazing pop tunes from La Sera, Frankie Rose, and Summer Twins, raging punk from LA slackers FIDLAR, the noisy Ramones trip of Terry Malts, and the Denton weird power pop of Mind Spiders. We're talkin' brand NEW tracks from Portland's Mean Jeans and Guantanamo Baywatch, whose new LPs won't be out for another month. We're talkin' brain-frying psychedelic rock n' roll from The Sufis and Ketamines. Most of all, we're talkin' about a track called "Conversation" from one of the most impressive debut LPs I've heard in forever, the 60s sunshine pop/psych hybrid known as OUTER MINDS. Seriously, this album is so good that it's unreal. Think early Arthur Lee and Love mixed with the complex vocal harmonies of The Association, and just run to the record store NOW.

Woah! 2012 is less than two months old, and there's already so much kick-ass rock n' roll coming out that it's making my head spin! So yeah, this time around Random Old Records Podcast #40 is an uninterrupted hour of straight-up jams because there just wasn't any room for the quirky soundbytes you all know and love. HAHA. This fat stack of tracks features one song each from the latest batch of HoZac Records releases, including The Band In Heaven, Radar Eyes, Teledrome, and Bare Mutants, which all rule as usual. Teledrome's super-catchy electro-punk is the real gem this time around. Seriously, give this dude a proper studio and budget and he'll be on the cover of magazines in a year. Mark my words!

Random Old Records #40 also features an EXCLUSIVE track from the upcoming second LP by killer Wisconsin garage punk duo The Hussy! It's called "Mind Alright," the LP is called Weed Seizure, and it's set to be released by Tic Tac Totally sometime next month. This record is a monster folks, just check out the sick artwork by Ben Lyon below! Elsewhere, you'll hear BRAND NEW tracks from upcoming releases by The Sugar Stems, Digital Leather, and Terry Malts, current tunes by Coasting, Gap Dream, Wiccans, The Pharmacy, and Gary Wrong, classics from the Angry Samoans and Teengenerate, and more, more, MORE!!! So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. Hey folks, I've been on VACATION! Yeah, it's been a year now since I got a full-time grown-up job, so I finally decided to cash in and take a week of paid vacation. Lemme back up a bit and be honest. I didn't just go nuts and check out for awhile, I went nuts and impulsively bought tickets to the Friday night show of the Norton Records 25th anniversary celebration at the Bell House in Brooklyn! I just couldn't miss the Reigning Sound, Mark Sultan, the Great Gaylord, Jackie and The Cedrics, Mighty Hannibal, Andre Williams, and an all-star band led by Mick Collins on guitar. What a lineup! After a five day weekend in NYC that involved much record shopping (original pressings of the second New York Dolls LP AND PiL's Flowers Of Romance, YES!), a midnight show at the KILLER Spectacle Theater, a trip to Coney Island for a Nathan's Famous, and a few moments of clarity in a garden on top of a seventeen story building, I'm back and proud to present Random Old Records Podcast #37, which also happens to be the third anniversary show!

Yep, I've been doing this podcast for a solid three years now and it might seem easy, but it can get hard as hell to scour the bins and blogs for a monthly hour of fresh jams sometimes. Luckily, the fall has coughed up a whole bunch of sizzling slabs that I can't stop spinning, and the springboard was a killer weeknight show at local dive The Comet, featuring Davila 666, Jacuzzi Boys, and Barreracudas. You'll hear a track from each band on this episode, kicking off with Davila's modern classic "El Lobo." Elsewhere, there's bubblegum-catchy glammy power pop punk junk from Italy's Giuda, Bare Wires, Video, and White Faces, another track from the AMAZING new Strange Boys LP (the best American rock n' roll band since the Replacements, for real), dark mysterious pop from Captured Tracks heroes Blouse and The Soft Moon, noisy Ramones worship from Terry Malts, noisy 90s slacker-rock worship from Heavy Times, and a whole helluva lot MORE!

Whether you've been here since the beginning, or just found this site while searching for Mediafire links to the new Bad Sports LP or whatever and decided that REAL old school music writing still had merit in 2011, I'm glad you came along for the ride. Every time I think about quitting and settling into old age and complacency, my mind is blown by another bunch of kids with guitars and the cycle starts all over again. If going to the Norton bash taught me anything, it's that real, passionate rock n' roll still pokes through the cracks in this monolith of Internet cultural saturation every once in awhile, and it's no less vital than it was back in whatever time and place you decide is THE DAY. Woah, is it really October already?! Judging by the clock at the bottom right of my computer screen and the flannel shirt wrapped around my torso, it must be. Where has all the time gone? It seems like April was only a few minutes ago, and now the year is damn near over. I've been to a bunch of shows, crossed a couple of folks off my live bucket list (New York Dolls, Wanda Jackson), and spent probably a few grand on records, and what do I have to show for it? Slightly more damaged eardrums and a whole buncha physical media that will be a real pain in the ass to lift if I ever move into a new place, I reckon. Seriously though, 2011 might have already topped 2010 as one of the best music years since the mid-90s, and it's not over yet!

Random Old Records Podcast #36 is out now, and it's loaded with just over an hour of jams, starting off with the raging opening salvo from Let's Wrestle's new LP, "In Dreams Part II." It sounds so much like the aforementioned mid-90s that you'd swear that 15+ years of godawful over-produced mainstream rock didn't kill good music after all and that the kids really and truly are alright. The kids really ARE alright, even though their space phone zombie walks and Twitter posts suggest otherwise. Forget about the waves of whiny bedroom folk and trendy corporate "garage rock" wannabes, there's real and VITAL rock n' roll still being cranked out by the truckload all over the world. No better example can be found than the second track on this here podcast, a sizzling blast from the brand new 10" LP from smooth punk titans Bare Wires, who continue their unparalleled streak of insta-classic bangers with "Sweet Little Stranger." That nasty fuzz and snarling vocal might just lift you out of your plush computer chair, Mr. Internet cynic!

Elsewhere, you'll hear the lead-off single from the Strange Boys' highly anticipated new LP out in a few weeks, which finds the Austin garage rockers moving even closer to that Exile On Main Street vibe, another perfect 80s pop jam from the new Dum Dum Girls album, some delightfully evil synth punk from Swedish noise terrorists Black Bug, a fuzzed-out Beach Boys homage from Moonhearts mainman Mikal Cronin's debut solo nod on Trouble In Mind, some obnoxious analog oscillations from California's Blasted Canyons, some dusty reverb rock from Texas teenagers Fungi Girls, and a catchy beach-pop latecomer from the former Mika Miko members in Bleached. Random Old Records #36 finishes up with 18 or so minutes of classic mid-90s indie rock from Material Issue, Hazel, The Spinanes, and Sebadoh, who I'll be glad to cross off that live show bucket list in a couple weeks. Bakesale was released 17 years ago, and if that's not enough to make a guy feel old, I don't know what does. In between the tracks, you’ll hear a series of spooky inserts from “Death Of A Doll,” an episode of Inner Sanctum Mysteries originally aired October 18th, 1948. Right in time for Halloween, it will send a chill up your back!

Yeah dude, EPISODE #35 of Random Old Records is finished, fresh off my hard drive to yours, and this one is chock-full of jams! Not only that, but this time around there's no dance pop. Yep, 100% dance pop free! It kicks off with a track from Vancouver's Dead Ghosts, who put out one of the best rock n' roll debut albums I've heard in a long time earlier this year. It sounds like a bunch of degenerate punk kids who grew up on beat-up vinyl copies of early Stones records. A few minutes later, there's a tune from the upcoming second Dum Dum Girls record on Sub Pop, and Dee Dee Dum Dum has morphed into a master of the pop song. "Bedroom Eyes" sounds straight outta 1985, a simpler time when songs that still resembled rock n' roll made it onto pop radio. It sounds like the love song from a classic big-budget 80s flick, and just try to make it through without getting that chorus stuck in your head. It's impossible!

Elsewhere, I dig deep into my bank of classic tunes and pull out stuff by Big Star, The Raspberries, Captain Beefheart, Thee Headcoats, and Louis Jordan. Plus, you'll hear a set of original punk rock from The Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, and The Rezillos, and a sprinkling of newer tracks by Jacuzzi Boys, Bare Wires, Fungi Girls, and Missing Monuments. Hot DAMN! Nestled deep in the playlist, you'll find a track from The Streys, a bunch of kids from the Cleveland suburbs who cranked out a few singles of hammer-dumb 60s garage punk before disappearing forever. It all wraps up with "Since You've Gone" by Spanky And Our Gang, one of the most dazzling displays of psychedelic vocal harmony I've ever heard.

All in all, this is one of the best episodes of Random Old Records I've put together in awhile, so go to the normal locations and download it right away! There's lots of loud guitars, simplistic hooks, and plenty of "hell yeah!" moments to be had. It's a perfect soundtrack for jumping around your room for like an hour!

Random Old Records Podcast #34

So yeah, Random Old Records Podcast has been coming out like clockwork every second Wednesday of the month for like a year or so now, but my plans got derailed in the last few days. I had the playlist finalized on Sunday, then came home from work on Monday to find that my computer had taken a dump. LAME! After a couple hours of shopping online and several more hours of staring at progress bars, I had a brand new machine loaded with jams and cracked software and whatnot, so here's Random Old Records Podcast #34, approximately a day late and eight hundred dollars short. It's got roughly an hour of my favorite songs from the past month, and I'm hoping at least some of you faithful readers and listeners will enjoy them, too.

Last month, I spoke a bit about being bored with new music, and judging by the stuff coming out lately, it seems like bands across the land are feeling the same way. My ears have gotten burned out by listening to nothing but lo-fi garage rock for awhile, and after hearing like fifty bands dealing in sounds of the sixties and seventies, the only logical place to go is the eighties. I just can't get down with all those sweater-vested weiners aping Talking Heads, but bands ripping off Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and The Cure get an immediate pass in my book. So this episode features a ton of classic tracks from the eighties by The Sound, The Comsat Angels, and Morrissey's band, along with songs by The Fresh And Onlys, Voxtrot, and Pernice Brothers that remind me of that post-punk time when bands slowed down and got all jangly and noisy and weird.

Speaking of new music and old music, Captured Tracks has become my favorite label of the last few months. On this episode, you'll hear tunes from Soft Metals, Widowspeak, and Hoop Dreams, which bring back the sounds of the late eighties so perfectly that listening to their records might put you into a time warp. If you like dark dance, gothic country, or nervy college kid pop, then you're gonna love this stuff as much as I do. That Mike Sniper guy has a singular vision for his label that rivals Tony Wilson in his prime. Believe it!

If you're a bit confused and are thinking "Well damn, I started listening to Random Old Records because it has a bunch of crazy garage rock n' roll jams every month" then I've got you covered, too. Random Old Records #34 finishes up with the best feral garage pop I've heard in the past month from the new Black Lips LP, The Happy Thoughts, Apache Dropout, and more! This one goes all over the place and back again, and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had putting it together!

Summer, summer, summertime! I threw this one together at the last minute, but I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the mood of this lazy, hazy, hot July. Random Old Records Podcast #33 drifts by in a dreamy blur of psychedelic moods, shimmering reverb guitar, and loping dance beats, with a mix of new and old tracks. If you're one of those people who are melting in this punishing 100+ degree heatwave rocking the midwest, and just want to sit around in a dark room getting lifted all day, this is the podcast for you!

Episode #33 kicks off with the all-time classic opening medley from the debut LP by The Soft Machine, a towering groove filled with stunning drums from Robert Wyatt, screeching organs, and slow-burning instrumental fury, and goes into some screaming garage psych from The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees, then a Brit-psych style workout from The Paperhead, who put out one of the best LPs of the year on Trouble In Mind a few months back. I've been raving about them ever since, and now I'm SUPER-PUMPED that they're playing a free show at one of the best new venues in Cincinnati, MOTR Pub, on July 27th. Random Old Records Podcast #32

So yeah, the air conditioning has been broken in my office at work all week long. Neat, huh? It's like eleventy billion degrees outside, so it's a perfect time to drop a brand new podcast of hot rock n' roll jams to sweat out the summer months with! Random Old Records EPISODE #32 features brand new tracks from Black Lips, Wax Museums, Ty Segall, and Cults, each from LPs that are sure to top the year-end lists. Ty Segall in particular has a stunner ready for all of you with Goodbye Bread, which thickens and slows down his bratty garage punk sound and brings the superficial Beatles and Nirvana influences of his past releases to the forefront in a way that will have mainstream rock critics blowing their stacks when they finally get around to checking it out.

To be honest, I wasn't much of a Black Lips fan before, but the steady hand of super-producer Mark Ronson guides the band and polishes the shit out of their hooks and sound on the new Arabia Mountain. The blasts of bratty feedback and in-jokey murkiness of their previous releases has been replaced with huge gang choruses, sleazy saxophones, and more refined melodies than ever before. Random Old Records #32 includes "Raw Meat," which is a short and sweet Ramones homage that might be the best song they've ever recorded. Check it out!

Also, you may notice some strange and different sounds on Random Old Records #32 that you haven't heard in previous episodes. For some reason, this new wave of dark and moody electronic rock has really been catching my ear in the past month or two, most notably the releases from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label. On this episode, you'll hear a KILLER track from Portland's Blouse called "Into Black." These folks sound like they're trying to create a late 80s David Lynch movie credits theme with every track, and that's not really a bad thing in my book. You'll also hear darker Suicide-style tunes from The Soft Moon and Led Er Est that are on steady rotation around Random Old Records HQ.

Oh wow, is it really May already? Well, according to the calendar it is, so here's EPISODE #31 of Random Old Records! April was an amazing month for rock n' roll, and I spent it buying a whole pile of records and getting my face melted off at live shows by the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Ty Segall, The Fresh and Onlys, The Black Angels, Davila 666, Magic Jake and The Power Crystals, and YOWZA! Yeah, luckily a whole buncha sweet bands played around Cincinnati and got a fantastic turnout each time, so hopefully that bodes well for the summer and we'll be seeing even more coming soon!

Anyway, Random Old Records #31 is loaded with an hour of new rock n' roll, including a BRAND NEW track from glam pop wizard King Tuff, fresh off a recent Scion A/V split single with the Hex Dispensers. It's called "Hands" and it sounds like a long lost Slade song. His upcoming LP is gonna be something else! The featured label this time around is Trouble In Mind, who should get some kinda award for putting out dozens of records without a single bad one in the bunch! This time around, you'll hear a track from each of their latest releases (Wrong Words, The Paperhead, Jeffrey Novak, and Alex Cuervo), plus Mean Jeans doing a TORRID Sparks cover from the TiM Record Store Day split 7"! That The Paperhead LP is freakin' amazing, by the way. It's a buncha 18 year old kids channeling vintage 60s psych pop through a 90s Elephant 6 lens and wrapping it all in a haze of youthful vigor and pie-eyed optimism. Not to be missed!

2011 is in full swing, and there's a ton of amazing new jams coming out, so what better time to drop another installment of Random Old Records?! EPISODE #28 is a tribute to the ultimate diva Tura Satana (RIP) and it features a whole bunch of her classic quotes from the classic Russ Meyer flick Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! As far as the musical portion goes, it starts off with some classic '90s tunes from Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, then moves into a mix of new and old rock n' roll from Spencey Dude And The Doodles, 20/20, Mind Spiders, Mr. Airplane Man, and Bare Wires, then finishes up with brand spankin' new tracks from Smith Westerns, Jail Weddings, and the Strange Boys!

Big surprise that the most intriguing track to drop in 2011 so far comes from Austin's Strange Boys, off a FREE Scion Garage A/V single. My favorite band of 2010 goes OUT THERE with a seriously arty song that mixes yacht rock, silly white reggae, barking preacher voices, and their patented Stonesy swagger into a four minute firebomb interrupted by jolts of AM radio static. It sounds like a band of tired rock n' rollers driving their van down a faceless highway at 4 AM, sick of all the previously packed CDs, tapes, and iPods, desperately trying to find something good to listen to on the radio. Incredible!
