Obama announces review of government regulations

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said on Tuesday he would order a government-wide review of regulations with the goal of eliminating those that hurt job creation and make the U.S. economy less competitive.

In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Obama said some government regulations have placed "unreasonable burdens on business -- burdens that have stifled innovation and have had a chilling effect on growth and jobs." Story Here

No more regulation for the sake of regulating? We'll have to wait and see...but the words are in the right direction!

Government's stranglehold on business and the idea that government needs to have such a hold are not only currently hurting the economy but will continue to do so if the practice of regulation for the sake of regulation isn't ended.

Obama has had this argument thrown in his face repeatedly for the last two years, so why now is he giving it a look?

“A few years ago, about why we have to start looking for more and more of this [cold weather],” Bastardi said. “It’s called the triple crown of cooling – the natural reversal of the oceans cycles. Three years ago the Pacific went into the cold state. Solar activity, very low sunspot activity and volcanic activity, not the kind you see in the tropics but the kind we had in the Arctic regions a couple of winters ago — and this is something that could be causing a return to for instance, the times of the Victorian era when they used to have ice fairs in the early-1800s around Christmastime on the Thames and you’re seeing that type of thing go on."
a political Lazarus based on an active and successful lame duck session of Congress that saw tax rates extended for two years, the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and will likely on Wednesday add the ratification of a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia.

But Obama’s accomplishments are likely to be mere foothills compared to the heights that the president and Congress will be forced to scale in the months ahead. The impact of the lame duck on his reelection prospects in 2012 will almost certainly be small.
Does NPR have a policy that you aren't to attend (forgive the expression) Christmas parties? Or do they have a policy that you can't be (forgive the expression) a Christian? I mean come on. Would she "forgive the expression" for any other type of event?

“I was at – forgive the expression – a Christmas party,” NPR reporter Nina Totenberg interjected on Inside Washington in the weekend’s oddest cautionary separation from a common description for a common event, seemingly embarrassed to invoke any religious terminology for Christmas. She didn’t say what she’d prefer for parties this time of the year to be named. “Winter solstice party”? Just plain old “holiday party”? Or a “seasonal gathering”?
Maybe they should send it to the pastor in Florida.

It was etched in the blood of a dictator in a ghoulish bid for piety. Over the course of two painstaking years in the late 1990s, Saddam Hussein had sat regularly with a nurse and an Islamic calligrapher; the former drawing 27 litres of his blood and the latter using it as a macabre ink to transcribe a Qur’an. But since the fall of Baghdad, almost eight years ago, it has stayed largely out of sight – locked away behind three vaulted doors. It is the one part of the ousted tyrant’s legacy that Iraq has simply not known what to do with.

Pat Buchanan argued that the repeal of the Clinton-era policy on homosexuals in the military will have the effect of imposing the values of Fire Island, a popular destination off the coast of Long Island in New York for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender tourists, on the military.

He goes on to say "These are 19-year-old Marines. They’re very macho guys. Many of them are Christian traditionalists and you got these secular values and you bring open homosexuals into the barracks with these guys — it will be hellish.”

I really wonder what these people against this are really afraid of. The idea that a person can't be themselves and serve the country is a backward view of the world. These are soldiers and can and will still defend their country. Just because you don't agree with how they live their lives doesn't mean they don't and shouldn't have the right to do so. Imposing your own set of beliefs on someone is one of the oldest struggles of this world, I just can't believe that we haven't figured this one out yet.

Let homosexuals serve freely, love freely and live freely. Our country is about freedom and we all should support freedom, whether we agree with it or not.

But that’s the vision of former George W. Bush adviser and John McCain presidential campaign strategist Mark McKinnon with his “No Labels” movement that has captured quite a bit of media attention as of late.

You'll find why Joe Scarborough should run in 2012 below. He takes both sides to the wood chipper when needed and isn't afraid to challenge anybody on either side.

Joe Scarborough responds, “Well, sure – but as we’ve been saying for two years on our show, this is still James Madison’s Constitution. You have Frank Rich on the left enraged by what Mark’s doing. Rush Limbaugh on the right – enraged. And they have the luxury of never actually governing. Never being a president, never being a senator, never being in Congress — realizing you actually have to, at the end of the day, sit down and deal with people across the aisle.”

This is an ok idea but if it doesn't fly why not more parties. Our system being dominated by two major parties leaves people out and not fully represented, because in a sense you have to decide what main cause you want represented and as everyone knows we are a complex mulit-demensional people who deserve a large selection of parties to choose from. Its high on the list of things i find wrong with our system. Smaller parties get squeezed out.

Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani told The Associated Press that the botched bombing in central Stockholm last weekend was among the alleged plots the insurgents revealed. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, in a telephone interview from New York, called the claims "a critical threat."
Using more fire power is exactly what should be done. If we are in battle the best way to protect our troops is by using more firepower and more air strikes. They can't be sitting targets and left exposed. They must put on the pressure and keep the enemy on the run.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US military has dramatically stepped up air strikes and manhunts in Afghanistan in a bid to weaken the Taliban, reflecting a return to "counter-terrorism" tactics.

Dropping more bombs and carrying out more raids by special operations forces underscores a sense of urgency in the war effort, as the White House prepares to release a strategy review and commanders try to change the dynamic of a conflict mired in stalemate.

The $858 billion package now goes to the House, where many Democrats are unhappy with a provision that allows estates as large as $10 million to pass to heirs tax-free. Democratic leaders, however, say they expect the bill to ultimately pass and become law.
A federal judge in Virginia ruled that the federal government cannot force people to buy health insurance.

The federal judge is taking a stance on the individual mandate which forces everybody to purchase insurance so that a pool of funds is available to the insurance companies to pay the cost of everybody's health care.

While this is only one element of what critics call "Obamacare," the plan as a whole is unlikely to survive without it.

The judge in Virginia did not strike down the entire health care law, only the individual mandate provision. But without it, insurance companies would continue to deny coverage, including pre-existing conditions.

Full Story Here

This comes a day after WikiLeaks release documents containing damaging evidence that the bomber was released for more than compassionate reasons.

A cache of cables from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli describing the run-up to the decision to free al-Megrahi was released Wednesday by WikiLeaks .

The documents indicate that the British government feared a furious Libyan reaction if al-Megrahi wasn't set free and expressed relief when they learned that he would be released on compassionate grounds.

Critics of the decision on both sides of the Atlantic have alleged that British officials were motivated by commercial interests — including those of energy company BP PLC — when they moved to free al-Megrahi.
Pigford is the biggest rip-off this country has ever known, and there are lots of people in positions of power that know it. Politicians are using it to buy votes. Trial lawyers are using it to get rich.

I personally know of people who have no connection to farming at all who got Pigford checks. People with potted plants in their apartments claimed to be farmers and got paid. I saw an instance where eight Pigford checks went to one house. There are drug addicts and pushers who have received payments who have never farmed a day in their life.

There was discrimination at the US Department of Agriculture. It needed to be dealt with. I was suing the USDA before Timothy Pigford even filed suit. I wrote to attorney Al Pires, who eventually filed a class action lawsuit against the USDA, but he saw that there wasn’t going to be a huge amount of money for him. So he passed. What he did find was a way to work a scam from inside the Star City, Arkansas USDA office by paying a USDA employee to process claimants. This employee would take from $5,000 to $25,000 for each successful Pigford claim. Pires was in this totally for the money. He’s made far more money than any black farmer.
As you can clearly see from this video the ideology of left is that tax cuts add to the deficit, when in actuality the reason tax cuts add to the debt is spending not the tax cuts themselves. The problem is spending, period.

He also claims the unemployed are job creators, how in the hell are people not working job creators? Sure they spend the money the government gives to them but they are not buying luxury or things that stimulate the economy, no they spend it on power and food things that do little to stimulate and more to maintain. Is there a right answer to this? Is tax cuts or unemployment benefits the right answer?

Maybe not, but Olbermann while trashing tax cuts for "adding" to the deficit doesn't mention the fact that unemployment "benefits" do add to the deficit and for no other reason than they are spending. You can twist as he does the tax cuts add to the deficit argument all you want but the fact of the matter remains the only reason tax cuts add to the deficit is because you are spending more than you take in. Unemployment benefits are nothing but spending and that’s not a twist of the facts at all.

Olbermann as do other socialists think that you should raise taxes on the rich to pay for such programs. And while I do somewhat agree as a matter of principle, that people with money should help the less fortunate and the poor should be given a helping hand when needed, I don't believe that is a function of government. And while in theory the government should be of the people and for the people our government has been anything but for decades. They are of themselves for themselves.

Hi students,

We received a call today from a SIPA alumnus who is working at the State Department. He asked us to pass along the following information to anyone who will be applying for jobs in the federal government, since all would require a background investigation and in some instances a security clearance.

The documents released during the past few months through Wikileaks are still considered classified documents. He recommends that you DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter. Engaging in these activities would call into question your ability to deal with confidential information, which is part of most positions with the federal government.

LONDON – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange surrendered to London police Tuesday to face a Swedish arrest warrant, the latest blow to an organization that faces legal, financial and technological challenges after releasing hundreds of secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

Assange was at Westminster Magistrate's Court on Tuesday afternoon, waiting to attend a hearing. His Swedish lawyer told The Associated Press his client would challenge any extradition from Britain to Sweden.

If that is the case, Assange will likely be remanded into U.K. custody or released on bail until another judge rules on whether to extradite him, a spokeswoman for the extradition department said on customary condition of anonymity.
They don't have any power at all....yet. And yet they were able to get Obama to go back on another one of his campaign promises. So much for change.

WASHINGTON – Republicans control neither the House nor the Senate — and certainly not the White House. But they largely dictated the terms of President Barack Obama's proposed tax-cut compromise, which disgruntled congressional Democrats want to discuss in closed meetings that are likely to be rowdy.
Obama, while acknowledging Democratic unrest, agreed to extend the tax breaks for two years, whereas Republicans wanted a permanent extension.
After Keith Olbermann stupidly cast her as a hypocrite for appearing in a public service announcement promoting abstinence and safe sex. Comparing her being an abstinence spokeswoman to saying former President George W. Bush "kept us safe, `cept for that 9/11 thing, which doesn't count."

Palin fired back saying that what Olbermann lacks in originality, he makes up for with "insincere incredulity."

and...

She also apologized for not being "absolutely faultless like he undoubtedly must be."
The reporter clearly defines average citizen as not a congressmen, in the context of his question.

PICKET:There’s been criticism from the floor tonight essentially comparing you to the average American citizen, who, if they went through similar circumstances such as yourself that they may be punished in a worse way. What’s your response to that?

REP. RANGEL: What paper are you from?

PICKET: Pardon?

REP. RANGEL: What paper are you from?

PICKET: Washington Times, sir.

REP. RANGEL: What’s the question? Can you kind of make the question a little more exact? This criticism came from the floor? The floor can’t speak. Who said what?

PICKET: Well basically….

REP. RANGEL: What is the question?

PICKET: I’m just asking what is your response to criticism that if the average American citizen. Someone who is not a congressman

REP. RANGEL:Please, I’m not a psychiatrist. I don’t deal in average American citizens. Citizens are diverse. They are broad. I don’t know what is average, and so I don’t really agree… I’ll come back to you when you think of a good question.

Even as they talk, House leaders are planning to hold a politically charged vote Thursday to extend middle-class tax cuts while letting taxes for the wealthy rise.

The bill, even if it passes the House, stands no chance in the Senate. Nevertheless, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he is considering holding a similar vote.
UPDATE:
Well the bipartisan "Love Fest" didn't last long!!!

WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans threatened Wednesday to block virtually all legislation until expiring tax cuts are extended and a bill is passed to fund the federal government, vastly complicating Democratic attempts to leave their own stamp on the final days of the post-election Congress.
The team stopped trying to beat the other team in order to hold them to under 100 points by passing the ball around and running out the clock. Maybe someone should tell this coach the point of basketball is to score more points than the other team. And the point of athletics is to teach the athletes to try their best no matter what.

This coach instead decides that the point of basketball is to hold the other team to under 100 points. And when you are getting beat give up and hold the ball and run out the clock. What a fool. He should be fired!!!

The calls of moral victory resounded after Yates (Texas) High, the defending RivalsHigh national champions, knocked off Chavez (Texas) High, 97-65 last week. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Lions -- again ranked among the nation's best -- rested their starters throughout a fourth quarter in which Chavez didn't even attempt to score, instead passing the ball around to run out the clock before Yates could reach the century mark.

"We've never had a team score 100 on us," Chavez coach Kevin Pullum told the Chronicle. "We knew that if we couldn't beat Yates we could beat them a second way, and that is to not let them score 100 points.

The federal government says THIS is harder to read than This.

Got that? ALL CAPS are bad. Mixed Case is Good.

The rules are part of a tangle of regulations included in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The 800-plus page book tells local governments they:

-- Should increase the size of the letters on street signs from the current 4 inches to 6 inches on all roads with speed limits over 25 miles per hour. The target date for this to be completed is January 2012.

-- Install signs with new reflective letters more visible at night by January 2018.

-- And whenever street name signs are changed for any reason, they can no longer be in ALL CAPS.

And even better is the amount of money this will cost local governments in a time when they are struggling to bring in revenue.

In Milwaukee this will cost the cash-strapped city nearly $2 million -- double the city's entire annual for traffic control.

In Dinwiddie County, Virginia -- with lots of roads but not many people -- the cost comes to about $10 for every man, woman and child.
