Swastika - Let good prevail

This picture was captured recently during the festive Diwali period.

The word Swastika is normally believed to be an amalgam of the words Su and Asati. Su means 'good' and Asati meant 'to exist'.

As per Sanskrit grammer the words 'Su' and 'Asati' when amalgamated into one word become Swasti (as in the case of 'Su' and 'Aaatam' becoming Swagatam meaning welcome). If this derivation of the word Swastika is true, then the literal meaning of the term Swastika would be 'let good-prevail'.

It is also known as "Saathiyo" or "Saathiya" in the state of Gujarat, India.

The juggernaut of advertising on Indian news space

Is it just me or is everyone pissed off at the Indian media?

This is just one amongst the many examples I’m putting forward:

Inspite of it being one of the best selling Indian dailies, I never have taken to The Times of India. And dare you not visit their website; it’ll thrust adverts at you like a B grade porn website.

Case in point – look at the below given picture. It might just occur to you that the actual news is just tried to fit in after allocating spaces to the adverts. As if that wasn’t enough, they placed an even bigger advert right in the middle of the article.

Compare it with the New York Times article below and you’ll realize you wouldn’t mind advertising if only it were to be more aesthetic and wouldn’t obstruct your reading.

I’ve highlighted/outlined the advertisements by the glaring yellow ink using the humble Paint.

Grow up, TOI. If you need support, just ask your readers. I’m sure it’s not that difficult.

Lost Stories - Have you heard them yet?

Prayag Mehta and Rishab Joshi (Lost Stories Duo) have suddenly become the hottest trance music producers in India.

So, have you heard them yet?

A little bit more about Lost Stories:

Rishab met Prayag through the internet and partnered with him (courtesy: common interest). Their first release - False Stories was destined to make it big. It was immediately snapped up by Black Hole Recordings - founded by Tiesto, Moridi Mafia and Arny Bink.

Lost Stories had arrived and how. Their tunes have been supported by THE hottest DJs of today including Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Marcus Schulz, Mr. Sam et al. Lost Stories is of course heading the right way.

The Indian Electronic/Trance scene has never been so good. And thanks to Lost Stories, it is now on a different octave altogether.

Are questions the future of Facebook?

About a week ago, word started getting out that Facebook is beta testing a new “killer app” called Facebook Questions. For beta testers, the Questions feature appears in the left-hand column just below Events and Photos. It lets you ask and answer questions to and from your extended circle of friends.

A few days ago, Facebook opened up the private beta further and is nowtaking applications for anyone who wants to enter the beta. Facebook is taking its Questions product very seriously. “Help us build the future of Facebook,” reads the title of the page.

It puts the Questions product on par with Photos and Events.

As a beta tester, your job will be to ask great questions and provide great answers about your favorite topics. Economics? Skydiving? Relationships? Mexican Restaurants? It’s up to you. You’ll be the first person outside of Facebook to use this product. Your expert writing will be seen by tens of millions of people — including job recruiters. And we’ll bring our best beta testers out to California to tour Facebook headquarters and meet the team.

All you have to do to become a beta tester is submit three sample questions, such as

What are the main differences between Google Chrome and Internet Explorer?
What are women looking for in a relationship?
What methods has BP tried to clean up the oil spill?

Men are from Skylon 4. Women are from a breakfast nook on Earth

The creative Writing professor told his class one day: "Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting next to his or her desk.

As homework tonight, one of you will write the first paragraph of a short story. You will e-mail your partner that paragraph and send another copy to me. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story and send it back, also sending another copy to me. The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back-and-forth.

Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. There is to be absolutely NO talking outside of the e-mails and anything you wish to say must be written in the e-mail. The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached."

THE STORY:

At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The
chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again. So chamomile was out of the
question.

Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. "A.S. Harris to Geostation 17," he said into his transgalactic communicator. " Polar orbit established. No sign
of resistance so far..." But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam flashed out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

He bumped his head and died almost immediately, but not before he felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4. "Congress Passes Law
Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel," Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her youth, when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no newspaper to read, no television to distract her from
her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her. "Why must one lose one's innocence to become a woman?" she pondered wistfully.

Little did she know, but she had less than 10 seconds to live. Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian mothership launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dimwitted wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace disarmament Treaty through the Congress had left Earth
a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the
atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably massive explosion, which vaporized even poor, stupid Laurie.

How to survive a plane crash

The recent unfortunate incident of the Air India plane crash at Mangalore would’ve set many a people thinking about the same thing. What if they were to be involved in a similar situation? Would they survive?

No one knows the answer but there are a few basic precautions and elementary measures that might just help you escape unscathed. Read on for more information.

An airplane crash doesn't necessarily mean certain death. In fact, of the 568 U.S. plane crashes between 1980 and 2000, more than 90 percent of crash victims survived [source: BBC].

In the event of an air disaster, there are things you can do that can increase your odds of living. Keeping a calm, cool head amidst panic and disorder isn't easy, but key to your chances. So are the clothes you wear, the luggage you bring and where you stow it. Some research even indicates that the seat you choose might help.

Here are a few more tips you should remember if your plane is going down:

In the event of fire, stay as low as you can and get out as quickly as possible. The smoke and fumes from a burning plane are highly toxic and more likely to kill you than the flames.

The airline industry refers to the first 90 seconds of a plane crash as "golden time." If you're able to stay calm and move fast within this time frame, you have a good chance at getting out of the plane.

If you make it out of the plane in one piece, get as far away as possible as quickly as you can and tuck behind something large in case of an explosion.

Think before you drink. Consuming alcohol will slow your response time and cloud your decision-making.

No matter what you believe can't be replaced, never attempt to take your carry-on luggage with you during an emergency exit.

Don't inflate your life vest until you're outside the cabin. It will restrict your movement
