Masters Or Pawns? Being Politically Responsible In The Game (@BETTheGame)

Last night, after veiwing The State of The Union address, I tweeted and posted the following:

@HuggiW Massah (@Viacom owner of @BET) decided not 2 let the slaves (their viewers) watch the #SOTU choosing instead 2 air #bafoonery &#tomfoolery

I received the following response:

"The slaves had a choice to turn to a different channel. BET is a business, they got more viewers showing the GAME than the SOTU, sad but true."

To which I responded:

"Yep, you're right. The practice of slavery is usually motivated by business at the expense of others whose choices, be it their own, are usually influenced by others who could care less about the slave's best interest."

Interestingly, I woke up with more thoughts on the topic which prompted me to go back and check my sources and this is my updated response:

I humbly apologize and stand corrected regarding the aforementioned tweet:

I criticized the wrong entity. Viacom (@Viacom) actually aired the #SOTU on one of its other networks, Centric (@CentricTV).

As an older citizen of the US, I need this generation to be aware of and informed of the processes and people that shape our nation AND to partake in the political process knowledgebly. I applaud any business or corporation that would assist in providing this knowledge and criticize any business or corporation that would INFLUENCE and ENCOURAGE its patrons to CHOOSE to be uninformed by sending a tweet saying:

"@BETTheGame: "Sorry Obama" is trending as everyone changed the channel to BET!!!! #BETTheGame"

and even for Angelina Jolie to respond with:

"@RealAngieJolie: Don't say "Sorry Obama" if you're about to change the channel. Say sorry to yourself for missing out on an educational experience. #SOTU"

It appears that I should have criticized The Game's (@BETTheGame) tweet person instead! Lol!

Entertainment has its place, but let's use our grassroots voice (which The Game (@BETTheGame) has now become famous for) to influence a generation to obtain knowledge and utilize their political power. Let's become masters of the game instead of just pawns lulled by The Game.

Gestational Rejection: A Reason For Discipleship

After reading the aforementioned note the following phrase stayed with me:

"Rejection and rebellion--> the two minds of [a] double-minded person. Often these individuals have been rejected severely as early as in gestation. Personalities are deformed and distorted or may not form at all."

Individuals that are the result of unplanned pregnancies begin life in struggle. They often live their entire lives fighting to peaceably exist or just "be" without constant mental condemnation, low self-esteem and uncertainty. Many have no idea why a place of rest, security and acceptance has been so hard to obtain.

That is why it is so important for those of us, who now know where to obtain such peace and assurance, to share this information with others. However, this may not be just by telling them but by living with them in example.

And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 11:19 AMP)

Without going overboard, there are many unfortunate individuals impacted by gestational rejection, that may need consistent affirmation for a season until they understand that they are "kind, smart, and important" Lol!

Let's seek them out and make a difference. Secretariat was the foal that no one else wanted and turned out to became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series—the Kentucky Derby (1:592⁄5), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24)—records that still stand today because someone took a chance, against what everyone else thought, and believed in him.

I came across this article just today: Steve Jobs’s Biological Father Regrets Adoption ( and I said to myself "I'm sure he does!" This isn't to address the reasons and the why. Rejection is part of a fallen creation. However, many need the redemption and restoration... the Good News that they ARE loved and God has had a plan for them, despite the conditions of their arrival. Let's be family to those that may need the security that comes from loving families.

The following is infromation gleaned from 'The Millennials: Connecting to America's Largest Generation' by Thom S. Rainer & Jess Rainer , B&H Books, 2011

In 1965, the first year of the baby bust, live births dropped below 3.8 million. The number of births had been over four million since 1954. The trend continued until 1980 when live births once again began a significant upturn.

The number of live births per year had been well below 3.5 million since 1972 until the spike occurred. In 1980, live births soared not only above 3.5 million but also above 3.6 million.

From 1965-1980, there was a huge emphasis on birth control, sometimes by abortion. Children were not valued. However, a significant majority of those born between 1980-2000 were raised to be hopeful. The parents of this generation ushered in a boom for fertility clinics and gave a clear message: children were valued."

T.D. Jakes & Sony Pictures Presents Jumping The Broom (@JumpingTheBroom)

Jumping The Broom was an excellent portrayal of the reality of issues that need to be considered BEFORE "jumping the broom". One member of the screening audience even asked Bishop Jakes if he would advise marrying someone... with only a 6 mo. courtship (or dating relationship). It dealt with the blending of two VERY different families, the challenge of leaving and cleaving, and the offenses and insecurities that surface in those closest to the couple when all this change occurs. Other amenities such as the filming location, the actors/actresses and the soundtrack also made the movie a delight to watch. Now let me be clear: this is NOT an overtly Christian film and there are a few scenes and dialogue that push the envelope a bit. That being said, I also LOVE seeing African-Americans portrayed as something other than violent, ignorant, irresponsible and whore-ish. I LOVE seeing talented people (actors, actresses, producers, directors, etc.) actively working and creating decent (non-profane) entertainment that I can dialogue about with my teenagers with interest. This is the 2nd faith-based SONY screening that I've attended this year and since SONY is willing to invest I'm willing to support and promote such initiatives so that more quality entertainment can be produced. OPENING WEEKEND numbers are what make the difference - even if it's a matinee! :)
