I first heard about this controversial article when I heard that The Hilary and Scotty Show (Jam 88. 3) would be discussing an article regarding Fiipino not being the language of the "learned." (August 31, 2011). Being a person who always wants to be in the loop and a bit nationalistic, I couldn’t help but search it on google and read it. t.

So here I am, giving my views and opinions on his article

As I read Soriano’s article, I couldn’t help but relate to him; English was what my parents thought my siblings and I to speak when were just babies.

It had its perks. I could speak English fluently. I had a lot of words in my English vocabulary. I felt nice and somewhat “sosyal” when I spoke it in public. As the years went by, I learned to speak Filipino through my house helpers, friends, playmates, classmates and relatives. And that’s when I encountered problems.

Filipino was being constantly use and I had to struggle hard to understand them. In school, the subject Filipino was a pain in the butt. I couldn’t understand the terms quite well. I remembered when I was in 2^nd grade we had to spell 20 Filipino words for a quiz, I got a score of 4 (or something below 10). When I was in 6^th grade, I didn’t know the difference between pang-uri and pandiwa. In 2^nd year high school, I usually got the lowest or the 2^nd to the lowest scores in our periodical exams. When I was in 3^rd year high school, I kept asking a classmate mine what was the translation of a word in English to Filipino or sometimes what was the meaning of a particular Filipino word. She had enough and joked at me, “Ano ba Joan, Filipino ka ba?”

What she said was huge blow to me. Yes it was joke but I felt ashamed that I didn’t quite know and understand my mother tongue. Though at that time I could and always spoke in Bicol and Filipino I was still having problems with understanding “yung mga sobrang lalim na mga salita”. I can’t even write properly in Filipino, knowing that I have a limited vocabulary in it and I am used to in writing in English. It also takes me a while to understand Filipino text, especially literary pieces written in it. I can go on but I rest my case there.

You see, there is a little “James Soriano” in me, and that is the “English speaking” part only. I love my country, I love my language. I never saw it the way Soriano saw it. And maybe I have to thank the environment and my parents. Soriano was raised and nurtured in an environment that made he believe that English was the language of the learned and English was the language of the privileged.

I pity Soriano, and my other country men who were made to believe in such a way. I dislike those people who I hear in the malls or just about anywhere who struggle hard to speak English, with a somewhat annoying accent and adding a dash of Tagalog/Filipino just to show off or simply to act sosyal. And lastly, I’m disappointed in myself that I couldn’t even write this in Filipino.

Soriano's article should be a wake-up call to all of us not something/someone to be bash around. What is happening to our state of minds? Was that the concept we learned from watching too much American shows? From being bombarded with English music? Do we really look up so high to America (or in this case the English language) that we neglect our own culture?

Ugh! Just throw this "colonial mentality" stuff out of our minds and burn it to the ground.

A few things to say today:

As promise, I have made minor changes in my blog. Images and other stuff just to spice things up. I still haven't done my header and posted any randomness since I'm still busy with a lot of school work but thanks for still visiting my blog :) and keep them coming

After I've done with the whole "make-over", I'll post the links that will help you (and that also helped me) in customizing your blogger layout!

I don't why I only have two posts for Heartstrings (already including this one). I've raved about this drama the last time and that was it. Does that mean, I not blogging about it, makes me a lesser fan?

HELL NO! and shame on me for thinking such a shallow thing and typing such a stupid thing
It's because I just watched episode 10 (Little By Little, Slowly Stepping Towards You) last Saturday, and who would have thought it would be the best episode of the series so far! Yes, I'm a bit late in posting but I just had my preliminary exams so please bear with me as I gush over this episode! (and eventually the drama)

Lee Shin and Kyu Won are now a C.O.U.P.L.E (a.k.a The Dooley Couple)!!!!!!!!

Cutest/Most Adorable Moment/s:

When Shin was holding his hand out, Kyu-won thought he wanted to hold hands but he was actually asking for her bag (yeah right Shin, you really wanted to hold her hand). But while they were walking together, Kyu-won's hand kept bumping with Shin's. So.....

"It's annoying that our hand keep bumping into each other, so it's better that we just hold hands."

Kyu-won was talking to some people (well two people actually) but Shin, feeling ignored started showing off his guitar skill. Kyu-won still continues to ignore him. JUST PLAIN KYAAAAAH! :))

FUNNIEST SCENE!

Sa Rang and her gang have a launched a campaign to break our Dooley Couple. Shin thinks it's funny but Kyu-won is angry. She feels stress/annoyed that she is getting this kind of attention just because she is dating the most popular guy in school and leaves. Kyu-won's friends were about to "talk some sense" to them when Shin stopped them. He confronts Sa Rang and her friends, and told them to stop it. They immediately agreed and started to pack up! HAHAHAHAHA

These girls must like Shin so much that one warning from him and they just agreed... XDD laughed for hours!

JAW-DROPPING MOMENT /AWKWARD SCENE

We all know that they will kiss eventually. The Heartstrings facebook fan page and Park Shin Hye International had already announced that their kiss will go public but it was still a "jaw dropping" moment for me when it happened. But as most of the drama their kiss was simply just a peck on the lips (why Lord????) and why Shin were your eyes open? (meg: maybe he wants to see her reaction, maybe sis just maybe)

Adding a new touch to randomness

In the world? With me? Or what?

With that cheesy and lame picture (and lame caption) I did in Photoshop, I'm proud to tell you that my blog is undergoing it's make-over already.

I deleted a few things in my sidebar, added the "Read more" feature (check-out the homepage to see it), and finally made my background white! (the last was like "bone")

And that's not all. I've been tinkering with Photoshop since last night creating various stuff for the layout. I still have to do the header and footer (or maybe I won't do the footer anymore), and after that I'll be customizing the blog.

Changes are also happening to my posts. Pictures will have a nifty border or some glam to it, cool new topic (like source of inspiration, the book shelf) and maybe other random stuff (once I think about it).

So stay tune guys! :)

Last night the moon was beautiful and splendid, I just had to take a picture (above). The full picture actually was great but thinking that if i decided to upload a 2 mb picture file in blogger, it might slow down the loading. so you're welcome :)

And seeing that it was nearly full, I decided to take a pic of it today picture. Even though I had to wait a couple of minutes (thank god that The Princess and The Frog was on Fox Family Movies) and took a couple of shots, it was worth it!

Maybe you're asking, who is this girl? Maybe not but I'll still blog about her.

Samantha Dichoso is multi-talented; she's smart, she can sing, she can dance, she can choreograph, she can write a song, she can do a lot of stuff. Pretty much a box full of talent! And now she's showcasing her talent on YouTube, by uploading mostly Taylor Swift covers, along with her brother JoJo, another great singer.

Finally it's Friday, which means: EXAMS ARE OVER and I'm back! I've been gone for about 2 weeks for the prelims so I'll tell you about it, a la Tumblr style ;)

Preliminaries is in 2 weeks and here I am typing away in blog [major fail!].

So I really have to admit it, I'm addicted to the internet! Yeah, yeah... I really can't help it, so maybe setting up a blog was actually a wrong move, hmmm....

But anyways, I HAVE TO SET MY PRIORITIZE STRAIGHT! I won't be going on the net tomorrow (OH MY GOD). And right now, I'm making up excuses, I have to check Facebook for possible updates about school and blah blah, and there I go looking at different sites... le sigh!

Possibly I'm going online but only for Facebook and Twitter AND then no more! And no posts for 2 weeks or maybe more!!

God please help me!!

The downside wearing sneakers and flip flops all my life is when I put on those killer high heeled shoes is that even when just wearing them, it's a huge pain ~~in the behind~~ on my feet. It's very sad that in my life that I can't wear those gorgeous and stylish shoes [i have a formal one and wedge one], plus I'm short so it's really just very very sad that I can't wear one. So to commemorate my "no high-heeled shoes for you young lady [insert something here that would make sense]", I present to you the shoes I'll never have.

But looking at all those pretty shoes, I'm actually "training" myself in wearing heels. Currently, I wear Rockport's Emma Pump Bow when I go to school, which is super comfortable and super soft. It took me 3 days from limping home everyday to walking "like model" (if I say so myself ☺).

Craving's Chocolate Caramel for my birthday cake!

sugar as an exfoliant

My love for sweets is undeniable. I love chocolates, cakes, ice cream, milk shakes, and a lot more. It's the never ending cause of my tonsillitis and partly the reason for my occasional weight gain. But now, sweets have a good effect to me. Specifically the stuff the makes sweets... sweet.

I've been looking for the right facial care product for my pimple-covered face. Though I've been avid user of Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser since I was 9, I still wanted something aside from a cleanser because by the time I hit my teens I was getting more zits. So after trying different kinds (some expensive, some cheap) of toners, exfoliants, and other facial products, I decided to use sugar after watching 60 Ideas in 60 Minutes.

It's simply a mixture of brown sugar and Cetaphil, and do what you do like with your ordinary facial scrub (but I rinse with hot water).

so far the results are good but I'm not gonna post before and after pics :P

The Parable of the Sower

¹[One] day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. ²Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. ³And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. ⁴And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. ⁵Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, ⁶and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. ⁷Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. ⁸But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. ⁹Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Reflection:

A sower went out to sow. Let us focus on the sower or the farmer in the parable. The sower seems to have accepted the fact that not all the seeds he has sown will grow and bear fruit. Not all the good things we have done will be appreciated and repaid. Not all the work we undertake will profit. Not all our good intentions will be acknowledged.

We must be willing to take risks, leave room for failure in some of our endeavors, and accept setbacks in our honest efforts. We must be grateful for the seeds that will grow; they will be enough to compensate for the lost ones.

We cannot have it all every time and everywhere. I always thank the Lord for the many gifts and blessings he has given me. I also bless him for my own little thorn in the flesh. It keeps my feet on the ground.

Think of one frustration in your life, laugh it off, and offer it to God.

I actually read it over and over again so that the message will be stuck in my head and brain, and at the same time I was crying. Yesterday we got our I.D and they're so cool! wohoo \(^o^)/

I love our lanyard! Though I do want something from our own college, it's still cool.

If you look at it, you can flip it and choose from yellow or black. And the UST seal here is such good touch.

And here's my I.D card. I like the way it's organize and it tells your college and major. And the background with Benavides and the Main Building is just classy. But I do want the same effect like in the all i.d cards where you can see the flame shinning.

I can't wait to hang some pictures with my lanyard and finally I won't be mistaken for high school student!

It's July 20, 2011 and I'm just had another melt down. I listened to Desiderata again to gain more confidence but no use. I didn't go to school because I didn't want to suddenly cry in front of my blockmates and I just feel so blah and pointless... okay to much information there.

I remember Demi Lovato's Skyscraper which made my cry when I first listened to it. Thanks Demi for shinning some light in this gray day.

Yesterday when I thought we were going to discuss Myth of Sisyphus in World Literature, my professor decided we will take up Desiderata first. I was a bit mad since I was already 2 weeks prepared and excited for the discussion with Sisyphus. But as soon as I heard the music, I can help but hold back my tears. This song is what I need in my life right now. I've been through so many ups and downs especially now that I'm in college.

Listen to it. And when mean listen; feel it, believe it, absorb it, try to know what it's inside, don't analyze it... listen.

It's been a month since I've been college and it looks like I only know a couple of people or people a get along with (like about 2 or 3, and we're like 50 something in class).

This bothered me a lot and made me think during Philosophy (I was like half-listening... sorry). What are the causes of my lack of acquaintances?

This lead me to several conclusions:

1. I'm very shy. I mean, extremely shy.

2. I have low self-esteem/ self-confidence.

3. I'm scared I would be judge negatively.

4. Maybe I'm not approachable?

Aside from my lack of acquaintances, I'm still in the middle of loving my course (AB Journalism). I'm suppose to be "out there" but I'm in here.

There still a 2 and a half months before this semester end... more will change, I hope

that small purple wallet contains 2 of the most important things in my world, my X10 mini pro that contains so many memories of my last high school days, friends and family, and my iPod Shuffle containing all the songs I love (MJ, The Rocket Summer, Dashboard Confessionals, etc..). Though it's been more the 2 months I still regret getting distracted and leaving it in the bathroom. I'm still hoping they will be returned TT_TT

IT ALL ENDS 7.15. Is it time already? After years of waiting for the release of each of the 7 books and each of the 7 movies, lining up with rest of the Muggle fans, and chanting the world's famous wizard's name, it comes to this: the last of the Harry Potter movies >_<.

It seems only yesterday when I decided to replace my Goosebumps book with my first every novel ,I was 10 :'). And now here I am nearly 17 (the same age as Harry in the 7th book hahaha) and anticipating the final conclusion of the movie. I can't help but cry just thinking of what i will miss: those cool wizard terms, spells I can't pronounce, the famous butter beer, and most of all the whole lot!
