You see back in our day we didn’t have all music at the tap of our fingertips. We had to actually do research to find new bands. And finding independent punk bands was a whole other level of digging. We used to use word of mouth, liner notes from albums, and these awesome things called comps. A comp is short for “compilation” and these punk comps showcased a crapload of songs from a crapload of artists…a mixtape if you will. Anyways, enough old man rambling. It’s a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has ravaged the globe and has left everyone scrambling for answers. Sounds fun and familiar right. Oh yeah and a bunch of animal-human hybrids are being born instead of humans. Despite all of that, it’s still a fairly hopeful story about a deer boy named Gus trying to navigate this world. Yeah having kids is sometimes hard and annoying, but at the end of the day we love them and it’s important to talk about that love. I will be joined by Chase each episode and we will have a guest as well. We’re all dads with other hobbies and stuff so we’ll put out an episode whenever we get the time. In this article of Sean in the Pit, I traveled up to Philadelphia late on wednesday night for a 9pm show start time, and 3 band bill. Unfortunately, I missed the opening band, PA thrashers, Final Judgement, but I did catch Deleware’s Ring Rust. Their guitar tone was unlike most I’ve heard. Dirty, heavy, and very bass-y. They had a bit of a doom metal mixed with sludgey rock, thrown in with a dash of punk for good measure. They feature ex- members of older DE bands, blackthroat and Onita. The last time I saw All Else Failed I was 19 or 20 (2005?), and the band I was in at the time in Arizona actually played with them, and Ed Gein. Coincidentally, Ed Gein’s drummer, Jesse, was filling in for AEF’S drummer for this show, as well as their upcoming Euro tour. This was Jesse’s only US show with them, so that alone was worth the trip for me.

For those who have never heard of AEF, I reccommend checking out their full length via Abacus Recordings, “This Never Happened.” Released all the way back in 2004, it still holds very strong, musically and production included. If you kind of dig bands like dillinger escape plan, or even Ed Gein’s older catalog, but they might be a little too intense or technical for you, then you’ll love All Else Failed. Unfortunately, the album is not on spotify, but it is on their Bandcamp.

Sean in the Pit – Two Nights of Terror – Night 2

On the second night of terror, my true love of grind gave to me, a great line up of thrash, growls, and blasting snare drums. The newly formed Zealot R.I.P. opened up the show(and the pit) with one of the coolest and most memorable sets I’ve seen in a very long time, if ever. They also feature members of Pig Destroyer, and Darkest Hour.

When it appeared to be the end of their set as the drummer, Jason Hammacher, started to dissasamble his kit and throwing it into the crowd. At first, it seemed a bit dramatic and thought ge was just gonna end up collecting his things after all said and done, boy was I wrong! Once itwas all handed off to random kids who thought they were going to walk away with some new hardware and gear, he starts putting all the pieces together again in the center of the crowd. As the band starts up one last outro song, a few pieces were missing from Jason’s kit, so kids were inclined to hold. a few rack Tom’s in place. It was nothing short of jaw dropping and complete awe, since I hadn’t even heard of anything like this happening before, and I’ve even seen The Dillinger Escape Plan light their drum set on fire years ago.

Next up was DC native grinders, No/Mas. I’ve been following these guys shortly after I moved to the Baltimore area last year. I still attest to them being one of the best live grind bands I’ve seen. They typically make a lasting impression where they go, and they did not disappoint once again.

The next two acts that followed teeter in the edge of thrash, and death metal. Another DC heavy hitter, Red Death, and PA’s Outer Heaven.

I was new to seeing RD live, and somewhat new to their catalog as well. They also feature current and past members of Genocide Pact, and Coke Bust. If you dig bands like iron Reagan, conducting from the grave, and 80s thrash metal, give them a listen. You can find a brand new track off thor upcoming full length on spotify.

To no disarray, the PA cave dwellers that is Outer Heaven brought along one of my favorite sets I’ve seen them perform over the course of the last year. If you like heavy caveman sounding bohemeth riffs, they might be too heavy for you. Their full length on Relapse will have you grunt talking and barking orders at your wife so go scope them out!

Last but not least, Pig Destroyer put on yet another ear abrasive set with a completely different set list from the previous night. Featuring a few guest vocal spots throughout, they unleashed the fury one after the other, ending ther set with most tracks off their popular abum Prowler in the yard.

On Friday the 13th &14th in September, Virginia Grindfathers Pig Destroyer, hosted two nights of shows featuring different sets, and different bands for each night. It all took part in Baltimore at local art gallery/venue/bar, The Metro Gallery. The stage is high with no diving allowed, not ideal for a die hard Piggy D fan, but the crowd did everything in between. By the end of each night, beer was spewed, the pit was crude, and the metro gallery was chewed up and spit out. Check out a few of my favorite photos from each set of night 1. This week’s In the Pit segment comes from a show at The Sidebar (Baltimore). If you’ve watched any episodes of The Wire, you have seen glimpses of the corner punk rock dive bar. The inside is exactly that, none of which was shown on the show.

This was all brought together to celebrate local dark grinders, Crawler, record release for their new EP “Womb”. They were joined by fellow Baltimore punks in Syringe, LA’s crust/grind act, Frantic, Instinct? from Philly, and Kondroma based out of York, PA. All of which is the first phase of a bigger outing dubbed the Baltimore Punx Picnic, which also included a picnic and flea market at another local venue, The Metro Gallery, the following day.
