Music predictions for 2022

How making (and making money from) your music will change next year.

“Unprecedented.”

Tired of that word yet?

It’s apt though.

2021 (or “2020, Part 2”) was… unprecedented.

The music industry had been changing fast, but the pandemic accelerated all kinds of experimentation in 2021:

Legacy songwriter catalogs got bought and sold like mad
Some platforms started leaning towards more user-centric payment models
NFTs captured all the headlines… for a month
Livestreaming went from temporary supplement to permanent fixture
And so much more

Amidst all this experimentation, the independent music sector only grew in strength and market share this year. CD Baby just announced that we’ve paid out more than $1 billion to musicians. “Our mission has always been to work as hard as possible to serve musicians dedicated to doing their own thing, their way. Our success is a reflection of their success,” said CD Baby President Joel Andrew.

Given that there’s no ONE path to success these days, CD Baby has made sure to empower artists in a myriad of ways: digital music revenue, publishing administration, sync licensing, physical manufacturing and distribution, social video monetization, label services, and more. That’s a LOT of the music industry right there. Which also means we have a lot of experts in-house who are shaping the present with an eye to the future. I wanted to ask them what their predictions were for the music business in 2022, particularly as it relates to independent artists.

Music predictions for 2022, from CD Baby’s team:

Jon Bahr (VP of Business Development & Licensing)

I think 2022 will be a year where A/V services like TikTok, IG Reels, and YouTube Shorts continue to grow in their economic value to the music business. Music will increasingly be the soundtrack and background, not just the foreground like on services like Spotify. Artists can still focus on the music space, but they need to make themselves available (licensable!) to all the new ways music is consumed. We are moving to an access economy where you want your music to be accessible.

The Metaverse came into nomenclature this year and it really is just about making things accessible across apps, spaces, and the interoperability of things like avatars, digital goods, and music. How do you become accessible? It isn’t really new or hard: Find a great distro partner, work with a Publishing Administrator so your rights are licensable, and let your music be used — not just consumed.

All the visual pushes of Web3 and NFTs likely are still in an extremely early place so I will save those for 2024 predictions. We are likely in the Napster era of NFTs and their future utility likely will not be anything like the Myspace-feeling graphics that drive the NFT conversation now.

Nicholas Salomone (Director, Strategy & Partnerships – Video)

As we’ve seen in 2020 and 2021, 2022 will see the importance of “Creators” continue to increase as competition for consumers’ attention intensifies. This is particularly meaningful to independent music and musicians because, as the value and influence of creators grows, so does the value of smaller independent music catalogs.

Let me explain: The currently-accepted narrative is that social video platforms (and creators) provide value to smaller indie artists in the form of exposure. For this reason, artists and administrators must keep license fees low, to non-existent, in order to entice creators to use their music. But, it is often ignored that Creators NEED affordable music to create engaging content. After all, what is a YouTube video without a good intro/outro, or a TikTok video without a piece of music to support the message being conveyed in less than 30 seconds?

The successful creator has a set budget and none of them are going to shell-out thousands for a Justin Beiber song when they could spend $25 on a quality, lesser-known indie track. Furthermore, the number of video platforms is growing, and a licensed track in a video on one platform likely means a monetizable use of that same video on another platform. So make sure your distributor has the rights to license your music, opt-in for ALL video monetization options, and keep an eye on those sync revenues.

More and more international collaborations will happen. Not just as a result of the pandemic, which forced artists to find new ways to stay productive long-distance, but also because genre-boundaries are dissolving for listeners. In terms of creativity, that renders borders porous, and the blending of two “local” sounds can go global. I believe, obviously, that technology will play a huge role in this kind of collaboration, as more and more tools are developed to support artists’ efforts in recording, collaboration, sampling, and sharing.

I can also see a “renaissance” like movement when it comes to live music. So many artists and bands are ready to hit the road again once there’s more certainty around the effects of Omicron. it’s going to be a frenetic year for live music — if we don’t have any more Covid surprises (knock on wood).

In 2022 artists will continue to be confused by NFTs. No doubt there is value to digital merchandise, but the hype has caused many artists to make plans around lottery-winner narratives, instead of focusing on how they can engage with their fans in new ways. Meanwhile, what are you doing about your full-rights monetization? What are you doing about your physical merch, publishing, monetization at social platforms? Do you have back-catalog that you haven’t released yet? Your fans want that too and you need to maximize it.

Virtual events will increase and improve through augmented touring: In 2022, bands will fill out tours with virtual events, and I can’t wait! It was hard to book a show for each night of tour even before the pandemic, and there were always a few “nights off.” We pivoted to doing virtual events over the last couple of years and a lot of us found it lacking. But augmenting an in-person tour with a few nights of virtual events helps artists get to perform more and hopefully make more money, helps fans that can’t participate (or won’t yet) still engage, and bands will see that virtual events are an additional way to connect with fans as opposed to a forced alternative.

Musicians and fans will be excited for this and great things will come from it. Have a night off? Tell everyone at your live shows that you’re hosting an intimate, virtual, follow-up event for only your biggest fans. Have them sign up with an email address at your merch table or send them to your Show.co page — and then try something new at a practice space, basement, or hotel room…lots of opportunity here.

For 2022 I’m thinking of alternate sources of revenue for artists. Humanity is still struggling to overcome all the restrictions the pandemic has brought to the music ecosystem, as changing policies make it complicated for people to travel and attend live shows.

Artists are living in an unstable landscape and have become increasingly aware of the importance of partnering with service providers that help them find all possible sources of revenue from their catalog. Music distributors, Publishing admins, PROs, sync agencies, labels and audiovisual developers are some of the key partners that artists need. Companies that represent fair deals in all those areas will continue to thrive.

I’m also excited about new possibilities of algorithms helping new artist’s break through. Will there be an alternative to TikTok’s power to discover new music? Will we see another tool to take your message out there and how long will it take before it becomes global?

Why do you subscribe to so many video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, etc…? It’s because each of them offers exclusive content that you would like to watch. There is a big challenge to music streaming services in general, as all of them provide the same content. If you are an ordinary music listener, you probably don’t care about features, user interface, suggestions,…You just want to listen to music and pay less for it.

This challenge to DSP’s is a big opportunity for artists and labels. As we can see, services like TikTok are working directly with artists to promote their services with exclusive content. Also, artists like Garth Brooks released his catalog exclusively to Amazon Music. Spotify is investing in podcasts with famous artists.

There are too many music services in the market, and to survive they will need to differentiate themselves from others. But this is excellent news for independent artists! In the end, these streaming platforms offer something that only artists can provide — music. Artists must open their eyes to all these services to identify opportunities and take advantage of it for themselves.

As more streaming platforms allow artists to pitch and promote their music on-platform, consistent releasing will continue to be important for any artist trying to maintain and grow their fanbase. I believe this to be a positive shift that puts musicians’ efforts in the right place.

Being comfortable on camera will continue to be an important part of your music career. Meaning, the future of an artist’s music career will be a combination of IRL events/concerts and online efforts.

We’ll hear the term NFT a million time before we even get to February of 2022, but it’s still unclear if this will develop into something useful for the average indie artist or their average listeners in the coming year.

Cristina Cano (Artist Community Manager)

My predictions versus my desires for the future of music are quite different.

My desire is that we go back into a world of intentional live performances (albeit safely and with public health taken into consideration), where fans are real people we see in person and not numbers on a screen, where artists make meaningful physical media for consumption and collection, where you release more cohesive albums over releasing a consistent dribble of non-related singles.

My predictions, unfortunately, are that people will be even more interested in participating in all areas of their creative life and community via a screen — or they’ll at least feel they’re required to participate in that increasingly digital world. AI will continue to take a heavy toll on craftsmanship, and artists will concern themselves with things like NFTs as cash grabs.

There’s a lot of “one fine day” and “we’ll see” attitudes about NFTs and Web3, which I understand. It’s still the Wild West and no one knows who’ll end up holding the deed to Deadwood. But I do think for curious and motivated artists in 2022, there could be a big benefit to getting in the mix and messing around in that realm today. Uncertainty be damned (because isn’t failure supposed to be a great teacher?)

Anyway, in 2022, tech-savvy labels and artists will attempt to take greater ownership of their audiences — or rather, SHARE greater ownership — via DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations). Whether entry into these communities is driven by speculative interest or altruistic enthusiasm will depend on the artist, culture, and deployment. But it’s gonna be fun (and probably confusing) to watch.

The “tech” around NFTs, crypto wallets, and so forth may not be any simpler for the average music fan to adopt in 2022 (at least not without an intermediary, which sorta ruins the point), but a mix of curiosity and FOMO should bring more artists, labels, and audiences into the Web3 environment, as each tries to reduce their platform dependence.

Of course in 2022 we’ll hear mostly about the sensational Web3 successes covered in the news, but many smaller online communities will emerge around niche genres and obscure artists. Most will fail. Some will light the way. Just like every other endeavor in life.

In a global marketplace that determines value based on volume, DIY artists often get drowned out. I can wrap my head around DAOs as a kind of digital “local.” And that feels healthy for independent musicians who already view themselves as cottage industries — but who perhaps want to explore what happens when you turn a cottage industry into a co-op.

The other thing I’m thinking of, and I don’t really have an eloquent way to say it, so this might sound clunky: but I predict a further splintering of HOW or WHY music is created — not based on genre or production techniques, but on artistic temperament.

On the one side, you’ll have an awesome amount of music driven by the constraints and tastes of the most massive medium (which has always been the case): even shorter tracks with maximum hooks for TikTok, lots more features and collabs for Spotify discoverability, more “sync”-able songs for streaming TV, etc.

On the other side, you’ll have, well, the “outsiders” you always have — and I don’t mean that pejoratively. The world will always need… experimental music, hyperpop with bagpipes, noise-rock for birthday parties, any kind of jazz, murder ballads from the 1500s, trap about failed NASA missions, 9-minute singer-songwriter epics about meteorologists…

Basically, more and more of the beautiful people who create stuff not ONLY to be heard and seen, but to be heard and seen by the RIGHT audience. I think we’re in this strange time where the global marketplace intersects with small community management through a host of Web2 &Web3 tools and IRL events — and suddenly it doesn’t feel like a stretch to say, “no matter what kind of music you make, your audience is out there.” In 2022, that will be true-r than ever. Keep being you, and keep making YOUR music!

If you’ve ever run ads for your music, you know it’s important to focus on your goals. Starting with a goal is key.

But what happens when you begin with one goal and your campaign takes an unexpected turn?

I had the privilege to sit down with Sean Armbruster of the indie label Camp Hopeless to chat about his recent advertising efforts. In the interview below, Sean talks about how his ad campaign led to:

30k+ new YouTube views
an exponential growth in YouTube Content ID revenue
and a spillover of interest on other platforms too

Sean also discusses how he identified these opportunities, defined success, and broadened his reach online. Plus, we dig into his ad creative, how to evaluate ad performance through multiple analytics tools, and ways to experiment with marketing to find what your fans respond to most!

Effective music advertising: An interview with Sean Armbruster

Do you mind giving me just a few points about Camp Hopeless? What do you do? What’s your focus?

I’m in a band called Fantastic Mammals and we established Camp Hopeless as our DIY label. The big thing for us was ownership of the masters and the understanding of streaming revenues. Once it’s out there, it’s great but you’re not really making money on it. My thought was: “Is there something that we can have like an inner circle?”

So we’ve gone with sending out physical postcards. Anyone that’s on our mailing list has early access to tracks before we release them. We also push out bonus tracks, merchandise discounts, or sending out actual gifts on an annual basis.

If we’re going to own our recordings fully, then why wouldn’t we own our media channels fully? That is what Camp Hopeless is to us. Basically, we want to make the music that we want to make, and we want to reach the people that want to enjoy it. We’re not going for just number count. We want to be giving people what they want when they’re interested in it, not just paying for a bunch of fake clicks and quickly dissipating interactions. It’s about longevity.

But how do we find new fans in unexpected places that will want to sign up for Camp Hopeless? I came across Show.co through CD Baby. I had done some of this work in my past life with media buying in a totally different field, but it just looked really interesting to me.

I started just putting the feelers out, looking at our Spotify and Bandcamp metrics and some of our physical email and mailing lists. I wanted to see where everybody is listening now? We’re starting to see spike-ups in unexpected places; and then I started to increase the budget five bucks a week and retool the ads slightly, to figure what’s working and what’s not.

I started with really pushing for Spotify because I was like this is a great engagement; but it turned out, with Show.co, we were able to get something that totally floored us.

What happened was we noticed YouTube picking up. This is all thanks to opting into CD Baby’s YouTube Monetization program and following that up with Show.Co Ad Builder campaigns. We have an album that we put out about three years ago entitled Fantastic Mammals (And Where To Find Them) that had slow and steady traction for us with our existing genre fanbase and platforms that we focused on.

Now three years later, we’re starting to do this promotion to drive up our Spotify traffic and prep for releasing new material. All of a sudden, one of the previous albums’ royalty stats just starts lighting up in our CD Baby monthly payouts.

Here’s what happened: Through the combined magic of Show.co ads and YouTube Content ID, we started getting massive royalties from YouTubers that had put our songs in the background of their videos and on their YouTube music playlists.

So when you distribute your music through CD Baby and opt in to Sync Licensing, the YouTube videos that are auto-generated by CD Baby can become absolute breadwinners. For the song, “The Space Age 60’s” (which is three years old at this point) – It just starts absolutely taking off. It went from a couple of thousand views to 33,000 views just within a matter of two months.

Then, that starts getting people to playlist our song on YouTube. First, it’s appearing on weird all-over-the-place music playlists. Then the song sort of found a groove genre-wise.

All of this YouTube activity is now boosting everything else across the board… Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music. So it was just this really cool affirmation to see that sometimes you just need to keep showing up. Then, just as long as you’re prepared, you’re just going to have that nice little boost that pushes you to the next thing.

Now we are just getting to work on the REFrACTOR EP release. That’s a new Show.co campaign I’m running, and again we’re starting to see one of the new tracks “Nomadic Peoples (Alt. Mix)” is starting to really pick up on YouTube, thanks to the Show.co ad support we have put behind it. We are seeing the success start up all over again with the new song.

In building our next ad campaigns with Show.co, we are just looking at YouTube data. We’re picking out our geographical regions and the playlists that the existing songs are really picking up on. It turns out there’s a lot of places we’d never expected to have an audience. For example, there’s a lot of activity from the Philippines!

But we’re seeing those brand new audiences cross over on Spotify and Bandcamp too, and they are putting our songs on relevant playlists with major artists and hit punk/post-punk songs. It’s good harmony, right? CD Baby provided the monetization, and Show.co helped us really be able to hone in these ads. It was the best of both worlds.

All of these rapid pops of YouTube activity in turn steadily expanded our core fanbase. So short-term wins led to long-term wins. It led to Spotify follows. It led to Camp Hopeless postcard mailer sign-ups.

We just kept targeting where we saw success, and just putting that little bit of chase after that. It’s more about consistency, I’ve noticed, than anything. Keep it going. Keep the budget going, and as the royalties come in, funnel it back into your Show.Co Ad Builder budget… and of course pick up a few more cool plugins for your recording rig!

That’s so awesome to hear. I love all of that. What did you decide to do once you noticed that YouTube pickup? Did you focus all of your energy on YouTube or did you have a way to funnel those YouTube fans to those places like Spotify?

I think the only thing we did is beef up the YouTube channel. CD Baby pushes the releases to the platform, and then when that audio is being used in other videos, they’re collecting the royalties too. So, with those royalty reports, and then with the Show.co Ad Builder Report we’re seeing the geo targets and the clicks where everything’s coming from.

If this is bringing in the money and slow, organic growth, we’ve hit our goal. People are gonna find the song and if they like it, they like it. The newer ads I’m running for this YouTube playlist we’re just trying to get that messaging out there. We’re doing the Interactive Banners and getting that wide reach.

We’re looking for who’s going to be in there that we’re not expecting. I think that’s the big thing – what is out there that is in our blind spot? We didn’t know any of these markets existed before.

I love that you’re looking at your audience data and are making really smart decisions based on that; that’s really cool. So, speaking of success, what kind of advice would you give to somebody just starting out in advertising on what success means when you’re running ads?

I think a lot of times people get discouraged with it. It’s not bad to just start with a couple of bucks. Start with a minimum and just cast a broad net. Then just chase after and consistently do it.

It’s more about showing up and doing it for maybe three months at a budget that’s within reason on the lower end of what you want to do. It might be a small sample size but just take it as fact, and where you’re not seeing any success cut the fat. Then keep that budget and reapply it to what’s working.

Then once you get to that next tier of success, and that next tier of budget — then that’s a good time to reevaluate. Look at your Spotify data. Look at your CD Baby sales. We’re starting to see sales from TikTok. We’re starting to see a couple other random things so why not pull that in and see where we’re showing up now?

You’re looking at your data holistically in all the different areas, instead of hyper-focusing on one small thing. For example Spotify streams or something similar.

The other cool thing is with Ad Builder: When we’re looking at the “Discovery” tier of sites we can advertise on, we’re seeing a lot of stuff on Guitar Tab sites. So should we be posting our songs onto Ultimate Guitar Tabs?

There are all these cool little surprises and all you need is to try a bunch of things. All you need is one to work. It’s so much trial and error. You just have to find where that’s sticking and keep with it.

I noticed that you were running both Discovery and Targeted ads, do you notice a difference in pickup between the two? Or do you use both to widen that domain reach?

Within my budget, I can’t do all three website targeting tiers. As I said, I’m incrementally adding a little more each week. We will eventually also run Premium ads as we keep growing our budget to get on the most prestigious sites. But I was seeing enough success with the Targeted tier, even if the impressions were lower, the cost per click was still good. Why not keep it up and see what’s going to happen? obviously sites like The Hard Times, especially in Chicago with Riot Fest, is a great set of eyes to get in front of.

We’re seeing a lot of HYPEBEAST, which is weird because I didn’t think that we’d ever get anything on there… but then again we have a lo-fi instrumental remix of “Space-Age 60’s” that we ran ads for in Show.co using “Electronic” genre-targeting.

Discovery & Targeted are within reach for people trying to dip their toes into it. Start with Discovery but don’t be afraid of running Targeted, and don’t be afraid if the cost-per-click is a little higher, or the engagements a little lower. There is a lot more relevancy to these sites. So if you think those sites align more with your desired audience, then it’s probably worth it.

Let’s dig into your creative a little bit. I know that you have the teaser videos in your ads. How did you decide on the calls-to-action and what parts of the videos that you’re using for your teasers?

This is the weird thing with YouTube, right? We have this ad, for our newest release REFrACTOR. It’s a Show.co interactive video ad. I have it pointing at the REFrACTOR album playlist with the song uploads that came directly from CD Baby onto YouTube.

Additionally, I created a promo video via YouTube Shorts (much like Instagram Reels or TikTok posts). The promo video is not part of that playlist. But people are now clicking on the promo video because it’s the newest upload to the channel and getting recommended to YouTube users. The promo ShortShrot is gaining ground very fast right now, but it’s not a video that we directly promoted via Show.co.

So we have well over half of our traffic coming from Show.co ads onto YouTube. Now, additionally, this Shorts video I put up three days ago jumped overnight. It was in the single digits, and then this ad started running yesterday and it is now over 300.

But I think what we’re maybe seeing there is that people just like motion and faces on YouTube. Shocking, I know!

So to summarize, what Show.co has done for us on YouTube is this:

It got us in front of unlikely eyes
It got us playlisted
It got us compounding sync royalties

And it got us to pay attention to YouTube instead of just Spotify.

The reciprocity carries over TO Spotify — so we can get both and focus our Show.co ad budget on just YouTube to get new fans and sync royalties; Spotify for fan engagement and retention.

Now we’re talking about planning what we make for our new Show.co interactive video ads. The goal is driving people to our YouTube Music content that’s delivered by CD Baby — because that means sync royalties and new fans across multiple platforms — truly engaged fans.

So in planning our new Show.co interactive video ads:

Do we include a more forceful call-to-action?
Do we create custom-made YouTube promotional content, or do we just keep promoting the song links directly?

So that’s our next experiment in the Show.co Ad Builder platform, to try out:

Direct CD Baby YouTube uploads of the tracks
Promotional YouTube Shorts
Lyric/visual videos
And full-fledged music videos

Pit those against each other and see where it lands. Allocate subsequent budgets to the winners.

What kind of metrics would you use to determine success? Would it be, for example, the plays on YouTube, the data that you get from Ad Builder, or a combination of both?

I think I would start by looking at YouTube, then take the key bits back to our Show.co dashboard and compare metrics in order to construct your next set of Show.co ads. YouTube Studio & the mobile app are absolutely critical to this, and it’s divided into three useful sections:

1.The ‘Overview’ Tab

Views are obviously a fun indicator but you don’t get much info from it. The things I would look at are the ‘top videos,’ which would include the promos. The ‘top songs’ are going to be the tracks delivered by CD Baby to YouTube. That’s what’s getting royalties for us, that’s really the key one. The song that we’re running current ads for with Show.co gets the most hits on the ‘top songs’ metric.

2. The ‘Reach’ Tab:

Look at your ‘traffic source types’: Shorts feed, External, YouTube Search, Playlists.

Show.co Ad Builder sites represent 85% of our external traffic. Our total External traffic is neck-in-neck with our YouTube search.

From there I look into the ‘top playlists.’ I start to look for relevance. I start to look for other music playlists, Twitch/video game-related playlists where people are putting our music on in the background. And we’re looking for – what’s the top stuff here? What are the best things that start to make sense?

It’s not just about the streams, it’s about looking at these artists that we want to be associated with. Do we feel like x playlist is like just some weird random YouTube thing; or some like person that doesn’t have a big interest in our genre but they like some part of the song; are these fans of our genre? The first few groups of playlists are good, but the last group is the ticket. These are new fans. So now we know that’s the most legit compliment – that’s the kind of stuff that we’re gonna see transfer over to our Spotify and Bandcamp.

If we see a playlist on YouTube, we’ll see a lot of the same artists showing up on a Spotify playlist.

3. The ‘Fans” Tab:

If we’re looking at that, we’re seeing geographies, we’re seeing age ranges, and those are all very in sync with our Spotify user base.

So we’re looking at like here, United States, that this is the stuff that came up since we started doing the Show.co ads and getting hits on YouTube from the Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, India, and the United Kingdom. these are all like places that we never really had anything before, and now it’s crossing all the platforms; it’s crossing Spotify and Apple Music and Amazon; and this all checks out with our Show.Co Dashboard and ads!

We got our YouTube Studio data nuggets from all 3 tabs in the mobile app.

But let’s go back to Show.Co Ad Builder dashboard now. Let’s look at total clicks inside the Targeted and Discovery metrics:

From our Targeted ads, we see sites like NME. Obviously, that’s the UK. Hard Times — this is going to be a little bit more US space.
From our Discovery ads, a lot of these msn.com and the guitar tab sites have different country domains, right? And those are great indicators of where we’re getting tons of clicks. They’re actually not just random clicks. These are interested people that show up on Spotify and YouTube and Bandcamp. You can actually look at that data and say “Okay cool, I’m seeing I got 25 clicks or more on msn.uk, and I can see I’m getting 25 plays on YouTube from the UK.”

We now have everything we need to build and run our next round of Show.co ads. The feedback loop is complete – and we compound new long-term fans and sync royalties each time!

How to Sell Your Merch on Spotify

Do you want to sell merch right from your Spotify profile?

Of course you do. Especially since that’s one of the priority destinations for your fans.

If you’ve looked around Spotify as a fan yourself, you’ve likely seen OTHER artists listing their merch for sale. Ya know, famous artists. Label artists. And you’ve probably wondered, “Hey, how do I sell my vinyl and shirts on Spotify?”

Previously, the online marketplace Merchbar was the only option for artists looking to sell their merch right on their Spotify artist page. And this was great…for established acts. However, the platform was notably exclusive and difficult for indie artists to join.

But that’s all changed thanks to a partnership between Spotify and e-commerce company Shopify. This new agreement allows all artists to sell up to three merch items on their Spotify profile.

Let’s check out how it works!

What do I need to sell my merch on Spotify?

All you need to sell your merch on Spotify is:

A Shopify store: You’ll need to create a Shopify store at their website. Keep in mind Shopify is a paid service, so they require a monthly subscription. Their basic tier is $29 per month. After you create an account, you can add all your merch to your Shopify store.
A Spotify artist profile: This means you must have music distributed to Spotify through a distributor like CD Baby.
Access to Spotify for Artists: As a CD Baby artist, you can verify your Spotify for Artists profile right in your CD Baby account! Once that’s done you can customize your artist profile on Spotify, including adding merch.

How do I sell my merch on Spotify?

After you’ve completed all the preliminary steps to sell your merch on Spotify, it’s time to connect your Shopify account to your Spotify artist profile.

Spotify has outlined the steps to sell merch on your artist profile, which we’ll detail below:

How to connect Shopify to Spotify for Artists

The first step is to connect your Shopify store to your Spotify artist profile:

Log into Spotify for Artists
Go to Profile
Click Merch
Click LOG IN TO SHOPIFY
Enter your Shopify store URL and click LINK SHOP (Tip: This is the URL in the address bar when you’re on your Shopify store, e.g. “your-store-name.myshopify.com”)
Log into Shopify, then follow the steps to set up your accounts (Note: You’ll get prompted to Add sales channel, accept the terms, and choose the artist you want to link your shop to)

How to publish merch to Spotify for Artists

Next you’ll need to publish merch to your Spotify for Artists page:

Log into Shopify
Go to Settings
Click Products, then All products
Choose a product (Note: Check the product uses plain text and static images for the description and media (we don’t support videos or text formatting)
Click Manage next to SALES CHANNELS AND APPS
Make sure Spotify is checked, then click Done
Click Save at the top of the product page

How to add merch to your Spotify artist profile

After you publish merch to your profile, you can choose three items to list publicly.

To add merch to your Spotify artist profile:

Log into artists.spotify.com
Go to Profile
Click Merch
Click ADD TO SHOP for the merch items you want to display on your profile

And that’s it! Once you add your merch, anyone who visits your Spotify artist profile can see your merch items for sale. This is something you’ll want to do in time for any new release. According to Spotify’s Fan Study about merch:

Fans view merch 7.2x more on release day vs. other days, 4.0x more in the first week vs. other weeks, and 2.1x more in the first month vs. other months.

That makes sense, since you’re sending more traffic TO your artist profile on your release date.

There are a lot of other little bits of advice in that Spotify Fan Study as well, including:

Make sure you’re selling t-shirts in the summer
Stock up on vinyl during April and May
Offer outerwear during the holidays
Color t-shirts can grab more attention
Update pics and bio every time you release new music

Below are three examples of how you can use Show.co’s tools for your own music. These examples are just a few ideas, but there are really endless possibilities.

#1. Give people a fun reason to follow you

It never hurts to just ask people to follow you on Spotify, YouTube, or other places. But it can feel repetitive. Instead, why not give people a fun reason to follow you? An incentive!

Let me show you what I mean. Check this out. I promoted one of my singles with the promise that if you follow me on Spotify or give me your email, I will show you a video of me getting slapped in the face.

When someone sees this, they’re gonna be like, “Yeah, I kinda want to see that.” It makes them smile or wonder, and now I can email them more fun stuff and build their connection to my music.

Another fun example: My friend and podcast co-host Kevin Breuner created a campaign where he said ‘Hear the song that got us kicked off stage.’ It builds curiosity even with people who don’t know or care about the band. They got a bunch of new followers from it.

Here’s how you can create your own fun campaign:

Create your Show.co account. You can sign up for free through your CD Baby account here.
Inside your Show.co account, start a ‘Social Unlock’ campaign. Why is it called Social Unlock? It’s as if you have locked up something cool or fun. And in order for your fans to get your cool content, they have to give you something (email, Spotify follow, etc.) to unlock it.
Have fun building your campaign! It takes just a couple minutes to set up your campaign. And you can collect emails, Spotify followers, and more.

#2. Run a contest or giveaway

Contests are fun. And you don’t even need to give away a big prize. People just love the chance to win something for free.

So why not run a fun contest for your music? Give away merch or CDs or something that feels like it represents you.

What’s great about using Show.co for a contest is that you get to collect a bunch of email addresses that make it easy to run your contest.

When someone enters their email or adds your song on Spotify, Show.co will collect a list of emails. Then, you can download the list and use a random number generator to pick a winner. It’s quick and easy.

#3. Ask fans to save your song on Spotify before it releases

Have you heard of a Spotify Pre-Save? Used by thousands of artists, it’s a great way to build buzz before your next release. It’s a one-page website where your fans can save your song on Spotify before it’s officially released.

Artists like Kendrick Lamar and Miley Cyrus use Spotify Pre-Saves for two reasons:

Your fans will have the song ready to stream on the day of release. It’s in their queue.
It’s good to get a bunch of streams right away.

A high stream-count on day one can be an indicator of success for your newest song or album on Spotify, as it shows Spotify that your music might be worth sharing with their users via:

algorithmic playlists (such as Release Radar and Discover Weekly)
email notifications to your followers
Spotify’s official playlists

You can now make more money from your music on TIDAL, in addition to any streaming revenue you’re already earning from the hi-fi music platform.

TIDAL has a history of being an artist-focused service, from being the first major streaming platform to offer CD-quality audio to paying artists the highest rates in the industry. Now TIDAL has announced a slew of new features that benefit both subscribers and artists. The biggest news for artists who have distributed music to TIDAL is the new Direct Artist Payouts Program.

What is TIDAL’s Direct Artist Payouts Program?

With their new program, TIDAL will pay up to 10% of a HiFi Plus listener’s monthly subscription fee to the most-streamed artist on that listener’s account each month. This is in addition to any revenue the artist earns for streams.

What does this mean? If at the end of the month any TIDAL HiFi Plus subscribers have streamed your songs the most out of any of their streamed artists, TIDAL will pay you up to 10% of the fee that subscriber pays for their HiFi Plus membership.

In other words, TIDAL is rewarding you for any superfans who are streaming your music more than any other artist. Yet another incentive to market your music and cultivate a loyal following!

How will the Direct Artist Payouts be paid?

TIDAL established a payment threshold of $50. So once revenue accrued by meeting the “most-streamed artist” criteria reaches at least $50 through this new program, TIDAL will report it to CD Baby. We’ll then pay that amount to you through your CD Baby account just like any other revenue.

Will CD Baby take a cut from the payouts?

No. Artists keep 100% of the money earned through this program.

How do I take part in TIDAL’s Direct Artist Payouts Program?

Existing CD Baby artists who have opted in for distribution to TIDAL will receive a link via email to participate. New artists can head here to get started releasing music, and CD Baby will follow up about the program. Artists not currently distributing to TIDAL, can read about how to make distribution changes here.

TIDAL is also making changes to its user tiers

TIDAL has geared its free tier to new customers who are not familiar with TIDAL. It is a limited audio-only experience. Interruptions will be limited to TIDAL content, including artists’ new releases and existing catalogs. This is initially available in the US only.

TIDAL is changing its existing Premium tier to a HiFi tier (priced at $9.99 per month in the US, and equivalent rates internationally), which will include all of the existing features today of TIDAL’s $9.99 tier, with the addition of lossless audio quality.

TIDAL is changing its existing HiFi tier to a new HiFi Plus tier (priced at $19.99 per month in the US, and equivalent rates internationally). This includes: (i) immersive audio formats, (ii) fan-centered royalties and (iii) direct artist payouts.

How to Put Previously Released Singles on an Album

It’s no secret the current music industry is a singles-driven business. That’s why we always recommend new artists release singles first, before a full album. Singles not only allow you to verify your artist profile on the streaming platforms; they can also help you get placed on playlists and build hype for future releases.

But what if you’ve already taken our advice and released a few singles and you’re ready to commit to a full album? And what if you want to add those previously released singles to said full-length, or even a short EP? Here’s how to do that smoothly and correctly.

How do I keep my play counts from my singles?

This is the main concern for most artists who want to put previously released songs on a new album. Play counts on streaming platforms are public indicators of a song’s success. Songs are often ranked on an artist’s profile by play count, so when a new listener visits your profile they’ll see your most popular songs and likely start with those.

Luckily, the answer is simple: you can keep your play counts by using the same ISRC for the single and that same track on the album.

To keep your stream counts tallied and consistent:

Copy the ISRC for your previously released single
Sign up your new album for distribution
When entering ISRCs for individual tracks, paste in the single’s ISRC for the same song on the album

This of course prompts the question:

What is an ISRC?

ISRC stands for International Standard Recording Code.

From our trusty guide to music business acronyms:

“Your recording’s ISRC is used to identify that particular recording. Think of it as a digital watermark for the recording once it’s mastered and ready for distribution.”

This code is how streaming platforms track play counts for individual songs. That’s why it’s important to use the same ISRC you used on the single for that same song’s inclusion on the album.

How do I find my ISRC?

If you previously distributed the song, you already have the ISRC for it. If you don’t have that code saved in a document somewhere (you should), you can log in to your account with your distributor and locate it.

How do I add my single ISRCs to the songs on the album?

When you’re entering the information for your album, you’ll reach a point where you’ll enter the ISRCs for the songs. For the songs that were not previously released, you either acquired ISRCs from another source or are getting them assigned from your distributor (CD Baby does this for free!).

But for the song or songs that have already been distributed as singles, you don’t want to assign new ISRCs. You’ll want to use the same ISRCs. Simply enter those codes in the lines for the songs in question instead of selecting to generate new ones.

Do I need a new ISRC for a remix, radio edit or extended edit of my song?

Yes! Making a remix, radio edit or otherwise different version of your song means it’s a completely new recording. Since it’s a new recording, it requires a new ISRC.

So if you’re adding a different version of a previously released single on an album, you’ll need to assign it a new ISRC to track its numbers. You wouldn’t want listeners confusing a new mix or edit of a song with the original, right?

Does my album need a new UPC?

When you released your singles, you not only assigned ISRCs for the songs, but you also bought a UPC for each single. Why?

Let’s define what a UPC is:

What is a UPC?

From our acronym guide reference before:

“A UPC tracks sales of a product. In the music business, UPCs are assigned to singles or albums so platforms can correctly match the full release with the company that distributed it. This is different from an ISRC, which is for each recording.

Think of it this way: each individual track on an album gets an ISRC, but the entire album gets one UPC. Because the album is one collective product.”

Since your album is its own product separate from the singles you previously released, it gets its own UPC. So yes, you need a new UPC for your album, even if it contains songs that have been released as singles.

Does a bonus album or remastered album need a new UPC?

Yes, any change to a previously released album is a different product and needs a new UPC.

Does vinyl need a different UPC than CD or digital.

That depends. If you’re doing all three, yes, you’ll need a new UPC for vinyl or CD. That’s because you can only use a UPC for one physical release and its digital correspondent.

If you only distribute CD and digital, you can use the same UPC for both. Same if you’re only distributing vinyl and digital. But if you’re distributing vinyl, CD and digital, you’ll need two UPCs: one that is just for vinyl or CD, and another that is for the other physical release and digital.

How do I get a UPC?

Your best bet is to buy a UPC from your music distributor. CD Baby sells UPCs for releases, so you don’t need to shop around somewhere else for a code.

A UPC from CD Baby also has the added guarantee that it will be a valid code that has not been used before, since third-party UPC vendors are known to generate invalid or previously used UPCs.

If you’re making your own videos, Spotify offers these helpful suggestions when you’re shooting or editing the looped video that will accompany your track:

Avoid footage with talking, rapping, or singing. Your looped video will not be synced to the music, so any mouth movements will be distracting.
No frenetic cuts or flashing effects. The idea is to draw someone in, not give them a stroke.
Keep the action centered. Player controls may appear over the lower half of the screen, so the most important stuff should be in the center or slightly higher.
Spotify Canvas is a vertical video format. You have to upload a video with a 9:16 aspect ratio. You can’t edit the framing within Spotify for Artists.
No artist, track, or album names. Those things are already viewable to listeners.
Tell a story. Short-form video platforms like Instagram Reels and TikTok show that you can deliver a powerful punch in a matter of seconds.
Tell a bigger story. Upload Canvases for each song on an album that speak to one another or progress along a timeline.

How to upload a Spotify Canvas for your track

Once you’ve created a video that meets Spotify’s requirements, you can upload it as a Canvas within Spotify for Artists.

The process is similar on both mobile and desktop. Since most artists will encounter this feature in mobile first, I’ve outlined those steps below.

1. Select the appropriate track within Spotify for Artists!

2. Click the + for the right song.

3. Choose a video from your camera roll (or drag and drop a video from desktop).

4. Trim the video to between 3-8 seconds.

5. Review your Canvas and click Next to upload.

6. Verify you have the right to post this video content, and then share your Canvas on social!

If the first thing that you thought when you read funnel was: “You mean the thing that always stops my kitchen drawer from closing?,” we’re with you!

The term “funnel” gets thrown around a lot when we’re talking about marketing. You hear the term a lot when applied to big business, but what does that mean for artists marketing their own music?

Let’s break it down to the basics.

What is a marketing funnel?

A funnel is simply a map that shows you how the average person on the street becomes your biggest superfan.

When we’re out trying to market ourselves, it’s easy to think about this map as one step:

If a person would just take a listen they would become a superfan

Sometimes we find those magical people who become instant fans-for-life, but in many cases, the fan-making process isn’t so simple.

Your fans progress through these steps:

Awareness: I know about you
Acquisition: I’ve engaged with your content in some way
Retention: I keep coming back for more!
Referral: I tell everyone about it

Let’s take this back to the old-school analog: roadside billboards. We’ve all had this happen: you’re walking down a street and see a billboard for something you’ve never heard of before. For the sake of our metaphor, let’s talk about a recent sensation, Squid Game. Now that you’ve seen that billboard, you are aware that Squid Game exists.

It would be a pretty bad billboard if it didn’t have an action to take. So you see that this new TV show is available on Netflix. When you get home, you turn on your TV, log into Netflix and start the first episode. You have been acquired as a new viewer. You get up to cook dinner, and Netflix auto-plays the next episode. By the time dinner is done, you’re on episode three and have been retained as a viewer. By the time you’ve finished your binge-watch, you’re now texting all your friends the totally unpredictable ending, referring them to the show.

At this point, you might be saying “What in the world does that have to do with the thing on the Tin Man’s head?”

Well, that has to do with how many people make it through the steps! Not everyone who will know about you will engage with your content. And likewise, not everyone who engages with your content will keep coming back for more. As you move through the funnel, you will expect your audience to narrow resulting in…

As a potential fan moves down the funnel, they are getting closer and closer to a conversion point like concert-goer, repeat streamer, merch buyer, whatever your campaign goal is!

How do I use funnel marketing for my music?
